Alpinestars Bionic Air Back Protector

The Bionic Air Back Protector is CE certified to the latest back protector standard, enabling the development of an ergonomic, compact protector that focuses protective coverage around the central back.

Features:

  • CE Certified Level 1 to the LATEST back protector standard (prEN1621-2:2010) allowing a slimmer, more ergonomic design.
  • Innovative Dual Density Honeycomb Technology (DDH) combines two different honeycomb structures to offer lightweight impact protection with exceptional breathability and comfort:
  • Outer Honeycomb plate - Made of Polypropylene; provides an outer structure to protect the back from penetrating injuries, as well as dissipating impact force over a wider area;
  • Inner Honeycomb foam - Made from a special elastomeric compound, this light and flexible impact foam absorbs transferred energy.
  • Protection plates have special lateral “wings” that flex to fit to the movement of the shoulder blades and wrap around the kidneys when in the riding position

Great protection This protector covers more of my back than any of the removable protectors I have in my jackets. It’s quite comfortable and I often forget I’m wearing it, though it can get a bit sweaty on a hot summer day. It’s also quite slim and doesn’t make me look like a hunchback, even with a heavy winter jacket on. The only problem I’ve had with it it is the hook and loop used to secure the waist is very fine and doesn’t grip all that well. I had the same problem with an Alpinestars jacket. I ended up sewing large strips of Velcro across the “flaps” which makes it much more secure. I’m 6’ 2” and went with a large. August 15, 2014
Can't even tell you're wearing it This is a great option for back protectors. It extends all the way from your tail bone up to the top of your shoulder blades. Unobtrusive, comfortable, incredibly breathable, and the exact fit can be adjusted a number of different ways due to the Velcro elastic straps. Very great value overall - I were it under both my Dainese Laguna Seca Evo track suit and my AStars textile jack on the street. April 14, 2014
So comfortable, I use it every day I wanted some back protection that extended lower than the CE insert in my main jacket, but was comfortable and easy enough to use that I would actually wear it when daily commuting. The Bionic Air back protector fit the bill precisely. I looked at a few other options, but this seemed to be one of the best. This comfortably wraps around and tucks into the lumbar curvature and follows up the back nicely. I'm 5'8 and slim-to-athletic build and the size small worked well. There's some adjustment available in both the shoulder straps but also the velcro that secures the lower portion across the torso. Once you've adjusted it, there's no more need to fuss with adjustments. The shoulder straps are elasticated, so it's easy to slip on without having to do yoga contortions. I've also found that after a bit of time, it tends stay in the shape of your back making it even more comfortable. I'm still able to easily sit down, lean, and move about without really noticing it's there at all. Under my jacket, it's not perceptible and people are generally surprised to see that I'm wearing it when I take the jacket off. Airflow is quite good even though it's fairly snug against the back. I've since removed the insert from my jacket and prefer to just wear the Bionic Air protector. This also allows me to wear the jacket on it's own without too much bulk and protrusions from the back insert (I just leave in the shoulder and elbow pads as they're a pain to take in and out and not noticeable on the jacket at all.) Would definitely recommend this one. November 3, 2013
Comfortable Back Protection I purchased this back protector for my first track day. The organization requires all riders to have rigid back protection and the Bionic Air satisfies this requirement. Its slim low profile design allowed it to fit comfortably under my already slim-fitting jacket with no problems (I removed the jacket's existing soft back pad). The straps kept it in the right spot all day, though when using it on the road all day in high temperatures, the wide straps definitely held in a lot of heat and became a little uncomfortable. This obviously wouldn't be a problem in cooler temperatures. Overall I am definitely happy with it and would consider wearing it on the street again as well as on the track. August 13, 2013
Perfect back protector. Perfect back protector, very comfort and easy to fit. April 3, 2013
Great Product This back protector is much lighter and more breathable than my previous model. Haven't crash tested it yet but I'm confident in Astars. Straps on this model are a must have. September 17, 2012
Great back protector for a good price. I like this back protector because it falls in the middle of the price range for back protectors. It is also very slim. The medium fits me perfectly. I am 5'8. There is still plenty of room in all the straps for someone that may have a bit of a belly or broad shoulders. The protector breaths very good except for the strap that goes accross the belly. I found myself sweating from this area a lot. I have not crashed in it or had it long enough to comment on the level of protection and durability. Overall I am very happy with this purchase and would reccomend it to anyone. If you are like me, and you don't have much extra room in your leathers, then I strongly suggest this back protector as it is the slimmest that I tried on. September 10, 2012
Overall very good product This back protector offers good protection, plenty of protection for the road. I took the shoulder straps off because they caused the protector to ride up. I would definitely trust this at the track and plan on using it there. Airflow seems very good although I have yet to test it in anything over 75 degrees. July 10, 2012

Jeffrey H asked: I just bought a Vanson AR3 jacket in size 38, and would like to know if medium is the right size to wear under this jacket?

Thanks for the help.

Kevin W: Jeffrey, I bought the medium back protector for use under my leather track suit. To give you some idea on sizing, I am 5'11", have a 42" chest, 32" waist and weigh 165 lbs. The total length of this back protector is 22". It fits me spot on. I would say the limiting thing on the fit would be waist size. If my waist was a couple inches larger, it would challenge the Velcro overlap or I would need to really stretch the band.
Hope this helps,
Kevin W

Sean K: If it helps, I am 5'9" tall and went with the medium. I think a small might have been a better choice for my size. It's a little bit long especially under my suit. Just my $0.02 Jul 29, 2014

Wallace L: I think the correct size will correlate with your height, not your midsection. They are all adjustable around your midsection. Jul 29, 2014

Troy V asked: What are the dimensions of the back protector portions for the size L and XL? Jun 16, 2014
Answer this · Send to friends Good question? Yes (0) No (0)
Nick G: Hey Troy
The dimensions for size large are 10" at the widest point and 24" long .
I use mine under a Astars Atem suit . It felt a little bulky at first , but now
that I have been using it for a while I love it . Wouldn't think of throwing a leg over my bike without it .
