Best Helmet I've Ever Owned First of all, I purchased this helmet on a Wednesday night, it shipped Thursday and I received it Saturday...fast shipping! My first ride with it was the next day, we did about 250 miles and I never felt better. Keep in mind, I was wearing a half shell and 2 reasons I was wanting a 3/4 was for ventilation and to help cut wind noise in my ears. I got exactly that! The helmet was a little bigger than I was used to, but doesn't look weird or anything...besides, I don't care too much what I look like, I'm in it for the ride. Immediately after taking off, I noticed the air flow. What a difference that made. I used to be in a hurry to get my old helmet off when I got home because I would sweat so much in it. But this one is no problem. I'll leave it on while pumping gas and don't feel any different than if I weren't wearing a helmet...and I live in El Paso and the heat has been over a 100 degrees! So that should say something. I get home now and when I take my helmet off, my head is dry. Once I got on the highway, the noise control was much better than my half shell. I didn't have all of that wind rushing in my ears and I actually hear the music from my speakers a lot better. I was a little nervous purchasing a helmet online that I didn't have a chance to try on, but with Revzilla's exchange/return policy and exceptional customer service, I wasn't worried. Fortunately, based on the sizing chart, my head measured out to be right in the medium size so that's what I ordered, fit perfectly. The helmet is snug on my head without causing any hotspots or pain. Plus, riding on the highway, my head doesn't bobble around like it did with my half shell, so the aerodynamics on this helmet are top notch. I would definitely recommend this helmet to anybody! Great quality and value. Super comfortable fit on my large slightly oblong head. Liner feels very premium, soft yet durable. Air flow is great and really felt a difference when I opened up the back exhaust vents on 90 degree plus days. Vision is great with a wide perspective. Minor gripe is how tall it sits on you hear and not a low profile as my Bell C -500 which super low profile, but again just an astetics call. The helmet does a great job of keeping out a good amount of road noise while still allowing to here what going on around you and my stereo. Feels like a full face with the amount of coverage, yet still plenty of open face feel. Would definitely buy another one. 2015 HD Street Glide Special August 25, 2015
Great helmet! I did a lot research before buying this helmet. All of the very positive reviews for this helmet are spot-on. If you are in the market for a 3/4 helmet, this is the one to get! July 20, 2015
Product description & fit for medium was right on. Very nice helmet, with good fit for me in medium, sizing chart was right on.I find it best to take my glasses off when putting the helmet on as it will tend to drag my bows off my ear,but once on there is no problem. July 6, 2015
Shoei RJ Platinum-R delivers both comfort and style I'm pleased with my selection of this Shoei RJ Platinum helmet for a few reasons. Number one is the overall comfort of the product as well as the fit and finish. I prefer a 3/4 helmet for the level of protection it provides. The volume of air flow through the top of helmet is adequate to maintain a cool head in warm weather. The D ring chin strap design.is easy to secure and release. Overall the product is superb and would recommend it to others on those long cruising rides. June 11, 2015
Great helmet I really like this helmet!! Feels very good with glasses (no pinched ears). Vent system works great. My HD communication system fit in ear area very well. Feels much safer than the 1/2 helmet I was wearing. Great product. May 25, 2015
Holy comfortable helmet!!! For background, I own an Arai Defiant and a Bell Custom 500. This Shoei RJ Platinum-R is as comfortable as the Arai but with the open face feel. It is overall larger than the Bell Custom 500 in it's outer profile but much more comfortable and with much better air flow due to the venting that keeps the liner dry. The visibility is better than the full face but not quite as good as the Bell Custom 500, where I can't see the helmet at all in my peripheral vision. With the Shoei RJ Platinum-R, I can see the cheek area of the helmet but just a little and it's not an issue for me. The fit of this helmet is amazing. Initially I thought I had gotten too large of a size, but checking for movement it was clear that I had good contact everywhere, there was just absolutely no pressure points. It was very light on the head and with the vents open it flows a ton of air over by shaved scalp so it feels like I'm not wearing anything at all. Sunglasses work great without getting pushed around at all. I can still here my bike stereo very well. There's no lifting feel from the visor. The chin strap is super comfortable. There are no pressure points or any pressure on my ears. It's just a well rounded helmet. Clearly this has been around a long time and they have worked out any issues. It's just screams quality to me. I got the flat black which looks good but if I touch it with my gloves it leaves finger marks all over it for some reason. I'll wipe it down with some bike cleaner and see if the protectant kinda seals it. The big selling point to me on this is it's one of the VERY FEW Snell M2010 Approved. So if you want an open face helmet with the most protection you can get and extreme comfort, look no farther. May 13, 2015
Excellent Balance between Retro Style and Contemporary Features I was on the market for a Snell approved ¾ helmet because my full face helmet was too hot for summer riding. Most, if not all the alternatives I examined triggered nostalgic feelings. This was nice but they also appeared to be almost identical to what I was wearing in the 70’s. As their Snell approval indicates, they may be safer; but something was still missing for me. First of all, I was looking for ventilation, even if an open face helmet was in question. After all, ventilation channels can always be switched off but they are useful on hot weaher and/or at slower speeds. Secondly, I was seeking out a more beautiful helmet than the 70’s offerings, without compromising my nostalgic feelings towards the era. The Shoei RJ Platinum R was just what I was looking for: Snell approved, ventilated and very beautiful IMO. Since I was confident that Shoei would not offer a low quality helmet and since quality comes at a price, I pulled the trigger. I am now so happy that I did. The fit can be either true to size or maybe very slightly large. I am not certain because unlike full face helmets, the cheeks flex a bit. This flex may be misleading me towards wondering if it is slightly large. I purchased an XL for my 62 cm (24.40 inches) head and it fits like a glove. Since my same size Arai Quantum ST full face helmet fits a bit tighter, I may be thinking that the Shoei RJ Platinum R is a bit on the large side. However, once it is on my head, it nicely presses my cheeks and it does not move laterally or vertically, even if I try to move it with my hands. It feels quite light and it is extremely comfortable. The inner materials are velvety with a soft tactile feel which is not skiddy. In other words; perfect. The ventilation is a big bonus for me. I can feel a light breeze on the top of my head if I desire so. I do desire so most of the time in hot weather. I did shut the ventilation off a few times during night riding. Please note that I wore it only above 15˚C (59˚F) so far, behind the tall windshield of my Harley Road King. I cannot comment on cold weather comfort but I wouldn’t think it would be any different than other ¾ helmets. Again behind the windshield, it is not as noisy as I expected. In fact, it is less noisy than my Arai Quantum ST with the windshield fully open. This is not a fair comparison as the fully open windshield of a full face helmet swishes in the wind but I wanted to give an idea on the noise level. Needless to say, my full face helmet is significantly less noisy when its windshield is closed. The visor of the Shoei RJ Platinum R does not seem to swish, nor does it make my head wobble. On the other hand, it does not help much when facing the sun, either. My regular sunglasses stay securely put in it even if I rotate my head at speed. It is easy to put sunglasses on and off when wearing the helmet, thanks to the purpose built conduits. Nevertheless, I ordered goggles with polycarbonate lenses as regular sunglasses would injure my eye if a solid object hits at speed. As far as I know, there is no bubble shield for this helmet. I don’t know if universal ones or the ones from other manufacturers would fit or not. So, beware if this is your intention. After about a total of 1500 km (930 miles) with this helmet in nice weather, I decided to expand the temperature range I had in mind for using it. I ordered a neoprene half face mask and a neck collar and I already have a balaclava. I am so comfortable with it that I reckon my full face helmet will be on call only in really cold weather. All in all, I can recommend this helmet to anyone who is looking for an open face helmet in this price range. May 11, 2015

James S: I have the Neotec and the RJ Platinum-R in large. They seem to fit the same and I really like both helmets. If you get the RJ helmet too big it will seem to lift when you ride. I think that you will be good with the large and I'm sure that you'll love the helmet.
Good luck

William L: In my opinion, the only proper way to obtain the proper fit on a helmet is to actually get the helmet on your head and check the fit that way. In doing so, I would always place a Slik over my head first -- to ensure I didn't "sweat up" the inside of the helmet, such that if it is not the proper size, I haven't damaged the helmet for the eventual purchaser. The helmet has got to be snug when you first try it, and needs to be "broken-in" as the interior padding conforms to your skull and face. It may seem a bit uncomfortable at first, but when broken in, should fit properly. If the helmet is even a little bit loose when trying to move it fore-to-aft (once buckled) it is probably too big. That said, if you already own a Shoei in size Large, that is your best starting point, and will likely be a proper fit from the get-go.

And... choose a WHITE helmet for best visibility. Since your helmet is the highest point on the bike, you want the helmet to be the first thing noticed, and WHITE will be much more visible than black or dark colors. It's dangerous enough on the roads; make yourself stand out and be noticed by the cages around you!

A shopper asked: What are the snaps on the side of the helmet for?
I've seen those snaps on multiple open face helmets, but none of them mention what the snap is for.
Would it be for some type of goggles? If so, can someone recommend some goggles that work with that snap-style attachments?

Thanks!

A shopper asked: I am looking for an open face helmet that is comfortable and does not give me a major sore spot in the top center of my forehead. I have a Harley Davidson open face now that just kills me after an hour in the saddle. My buddy has the same helmet and same problem, so I know its not me. I looked at the video for the Shoei RJ Platinum and the interior padding looks very similar to the HD helmet I have. Can someone advise if this is a problem or comment on a comfortable open face?

Joe G: A couple of things about this helmet, one is the size seems to run alittle big, normally I wear a medium helmet and this Shoei is lose on my head, should have ordered a small. My hat size is 71/8. Secondly, it fits a round head better than an oval shape. My stepson hears it and it makes a sore spot in the center of his forehead. His head shape is more oval than mine.Other than the size I do like the helmet, sturdy visor and quality materials. Hope this helps. Jul 24, 2014

Dominick P: Helmet pinch point have as much to do with head shape as the helmet itself. Personally I find this Keller to be more round them oval for my head but still comfortable for long rides with excellent venting.

Wish I could be more specific, but you really to try it on to be sure.

Answer this · Send to friends Good question? Yes (0) No (0)
Herbert U: The Shoei RJ Platinum Helmet fits nicely around your cheeks ... snug but not tight. A first, the cheek pads may seem tight but give it a little time for break-in and you will have a nice comfortable fit for many years. I own two Shoei Helmets and this one is my favorite because of the fit and weight. Hope this helps. Apr 15, 2014

Keith W: Mine actually fits me perfectly. I have a fairly large head and would typically where the XXL, but in the shoei I use XL. I don't have chunky cheeks, more the square jaw, and my cheek pads fit perfectly. If I'm not mistaken, you can change cheek pads out in the shoei helmets.

A shopper asked: Shoei RJ Platinum-R Helmet.................Need to know few things about this helmet, I have had problems finding the right size for helmets, it's always been an issue for me, I wear a large size on full face n never had issues with them, but recently I ordered large open face of Bell Rogue helmet and it was tight and very uncomfortable, firstly because of the less padding and secondly it didn't fit completely without hurting my top part of my head if I fully pulled it down, btw I am completely bald, I shave my head, so got no extra cushion from my hair hehe :P.... so I don't know if large will fit me? And about the padding, is there more padding than other open face helmets? The problem is as I don't live in U.S, it will be hard for me to return it...As I will ship it to my cousin's place in Virginia and he will be coming here. and the helmet will reach me 10 or 11 of Feb. So Can you please help me out Jan 14, 2015

Brian W: I boyght a large and fit right. I also wear large Arai full face helmets. I assume the large Shoi will fit you fine. I prefer the comfort aspect of Arai's shape over the Shoei, but they don't really make a nice open face.
I also spend 12 hours a day in a Shoei RJ. I do get a pressure mark on my forehead but it doesn't hurt. It's not something I get with any Arai helmets.
I hope this helps you. Good luck.

Andrew B: Its a wonderful helmet. I shave my head as well & it fits perfect. As for head size, suggest you purchase a helmet the same way you do a hat, you could also measure head & check on line for what constitutes S M L by inches or centimeters. I wouldn't say there is more padding but this helmet is really made well & the padding feels good.
when you put it on you just know it's a quality product

Kevin G: Sizing varies on everything these days, so I cant guarantee how it will turn out for you. With that said I wear a US size 7 1/2 hat and the large size RJ Platinum is a snug but comfortable fit.
The padding on this helmet is thicker than what I've seen on less expensive helmets.

I am looking for an open face. I ride with glasses only and am looking for a helmet with two things in mind, quiet and comfort under $200 what do you recommend?

John S: I purchased the Shoei RJ Platinum helmet for knocking around the village in. Helmets are required but I didn't want to squish a full-face on for running to the coffee shop or market. This Shoei fit the requirements perfectly. I wear eye or sun glasses with it (also required by law) and it works well. It's not as quiet as a full face (but not at all noisy); it is comfy, wearable for long rides. It feels good on because it hugs my face a little, but not restrictive. The only downside in my opinion is that it is meaty, with lots of protection, a lot of helmet, and it has a bulby top. I just think that's because it is Snell as well as DOT, giving more cushion. David H: I ride a Harley Street Glide or Heritage Softail 16 to 18 thousand miles a year. Unless it is quite cold I am very happy with the Shoei FJ Playinum three quarter helmet. I always wear glasses too. Good fit good price good quality ans comfort. D Hennessey Nov 18, 2014

Brian W: It's a relatively quiet helmet and very comfortable. Eye glasses and sunglasses fit great in the helmet and do not feel like they are going to fall off.
I hope this helps.

A shopper asked: Hi,
Have query about size. Have tried the Large ( I have 2 Lge full face Shoei's) but the fit feels a bit looser than the full face and I'm concerned about whether I need to go to a Medium for when the helmet 'beds' in? Any advice as to how the helmet wears size wise when used a bit?
Cheers

James S: I have the RJ Platinum-R and the Neotech in large. The fit feels very similar. You could always replace the cheek pads with the thicker ones as the original ones wear. My original RJ helmet was an XL and it would seem to lift slightly at highway speed so I replaced it with the Large. I hope that this helps and you'll love that helmet. Aug 18, 2014

vincent r: I also have a full face Neotech Shoei in the PJ both of my helmets are medium you should not be able to move your head in the helmet better to look like a chipmunk then have a loose helmetI also thought at one time I thought I should wear a but I was wrong hope that helps you Aug 18, 2014

A shopper asked: how do I correctly measure my head for helmet size? Feb 23, 2015
Answer this · Send to friends Good question? Yes (0) No (0)
Thomas H: Hi. Use a flexible metric measuring tape and wrap it around your noggin. Place it over the most prominent part of the back of your head and the middle of your forehead. Mine, for example, measures 59cm, which is the typical hat/helmet size I look for. Using a metric/empirical conversion chart (I think Revzilla offers this), that measurement comes to 7 3/8, which again, is the size hat I look for in the US. Hope that helps. Cheers! Feb 24, 2015

A shopper asked: I want to order a Shoei RJ Platinum and my head measures 24. I know the fit should be tight because it will loosen. I am afraid that an XL may be too big. The chart states that this helmet fit is toward the larger size. Feedback would be appreciated, Jan 28, 2013

RevZilla: We find the RJ Platinum-R to fit true to Shoei's size chart, though it does have a rounder fit than other Shoei Helmets. At 24 inches, XL would be the appropriate size for you. Jan 31, 2013

Welcome to our detailed breakdown of the Shoei RJ Platinum-R open face helmet. Now, this is going to be a great option from the application side of things for really a cruiser upright riding, touring, for someone who doesn't want a full face helmet that typically just wants a visor. There is no shield available for this guy. So really, a helmet like this is going to cover you with a pair of sunglasses or a pair of Bobster eyewear or something that's suited for motorcycle riding. But you have to think about that going into it.

If we take a peek at this and what's going to make this special in that low $200 price point is really looking at a helmet that's using some of these same protective features that you're seeing in the full faced or higher end models of Shoei's. It's an AIM+ composite shell construction. It's going to be Snell 2005 rated for double impact throughout the shell - obviously not the open face area. If we take a peek at the ventilation system, obviously you have a ton of air coming in through the front. You have a very similar open and close venturi vent system here on the back. The nice part is they've added two little, two positioned chimney vents here on the front, above the visor that are going to vent directly to your scalp. The channel is built in to the inside of that. They are open and closable. But really with a helmet that is full faced like this, in my opinion, having them be open and closable is a bit moot.

The other nice thing is if we look at this, this is that wine red color. You've got 10 available color options here in the RJ Platinum-R. I'm going to pull over our Shoei donut, what we lovingly call our "shonut." We're going to show you the interior guts of this. The first thing you want to think about is fit. It's going to be that intermediate Shoei oval shape. But whenever you discontinue that chin bar there, it's going to be a slightly different level of tightness around the face. So just like a modular, just like any other open faced helmet, if we look at it, it's going to be slightly loose around the outside of the face. The thing I like about this, using their AIM+ shell, is... look how stiff that is. I'm really pushing on that. A lot of times, just see with open face helmets that when you don't have the connected chin bar, you lose a lot of rigidity through the opening.

We look at this nice neck roll, removable cheek pads, fully adjustable liner. It's nice that you use the brow fit system here for the front. What that does is it gets you away from having to have a snap up in the forehead region. It creates a more seamless design. It's the 3D molded comfort liner that comes out and has cut outs for the air channels. The chin straps are going to have a liner connected to them. As we look, you can see the ventilation holes, you can see the EPS, and you can see the channels that run along it.

Again, you're getting a good amount of functional features that when you're riding, it's going to keep you cool, keep you protected, keep you comfortable. When you're comfortable, your gear is not distracting you and you're enjoying your ride more and you're also safer.
