Shoei Hornet DS Helmet (2XS XS) 4.6 5 93 93
Good helmet Bought this helmet for hot weather riding. It works well paired w/ goggles - 100% Accuri goggle. This particular goggle fits the helmet opening but only just. As other reviewers note, at speed there can be considerable lift from the visor esp when its windy or when the shield is up (using goggles). July 13, 2015
first shoei Friend recommended shoei. Looks cool, not too MX. My screen prevents any buffeting of visor at hwy speeds so no issues there. Love the huge field of vision. Would have rated fit higher but had to buy the smaller cheek pads for 40 buck's July 6, 2015
Great Endure Helmet Decision on a helmet came down to Arai and Shoei. The Shoei was recommended by a friend and fit well. So far it has been great. Not too hot at all on summer enduro rides. Catches a lot of wind on the highway, but a better windshield would help with this on a DRZ400. Good protection for noggin with off road features. June 24, 2015
Great deal on a great lid I ride a Super Ténéré, but mostly on-road or New England dirt roads. My main helmet is a Shoei Neotec modular, purchased here @ Revzilla. I got this because 1) it was a steal; 2) they had it in my size and favorite color (white); and 3) because I'm doing a dual-sport ride next month for a week in Utah, and wanted something other than my fancy bluetoothed-Neotec to sweat in and get all filthy. I've ridden with this a few hundred miles, and it's an excellent helmet. Great visibility, excellent airflow, superb fit and finish. About the only thing it's missing is a pinlock anti-fog thingy; every helmet I've ever had has had one, but this does not. And last night, for the first time, got a little breath-fog going on. FWIW, I have one of those X-Screen windshield extenders/deflectors on my bike, and despite the peak on this helmet, haven't experienced much if any buffetting...maybe 10% more than with my non-visored helmet. I've always worn a size large in Nolans, and my Neotec is also a large, as is this helmet. All fit perfectly (although the cheekpads in my Neotec are still a little overly snug). This Hornet DS is actually slightly more comfortable than my Neotec, believe it or not. Other than that, it's excellent. Looking forward to using it in Utah, and beyond. For the price, it's pretty unbeatable, and I can't say I like it less or better than the newer model. Excellent RZ service as usual, but you knew that already... June 15, 2015
Great Helmet! I bought this on clearance and would have still been happy if I had to pay full price. Shoei quality all around, good look, good fit, good airflow, great ADV helmet. Size is true to chart although I have a full face (fat cheeks) and initially the helmet is a bit tight in the cheeks. I am going to give it a while to see how much it loosens up after break in but I may have to go one size down with the cheek pads. Fairly quiet also. I would say if you are planning on longer rides at highway speeds you will probably want to remove the visor. I would buy this helmet again. June 6, 2015
Great helmet Perfect helmet for dual purpose riding. 100% recomended May 25, 2015
Best Bang for the buck ever (thanks Revzilla) This is like you buying an audi A8 2008, brand new, today. Obviously there're a bunch of things you'll miss compared with the 2015, but you don't have the money for the 2015 in the first place, so... But in the other hand, you're buying a top of the line helmet (you feel it as soon as you see it, imagine when you wear it) at a really good price (closeout here at revzilla) May 18, 2015
Excellent expericence...Very satiisfied customer I can not say enough good things about my total experience with Revzilla. From tech support and great product reviews and materials, to the breath of product offering ,to the customer service, and prompt handling and shipping...Just a fantastic experience. I will without hesitation look to Revzilla for future purchases and without reservation recommend to friends and family. Keep up the great work May 11, 2015

Robert M: Shoei quality and fit. I like Arai road helmets and Shoei off-road helmets. The Hornet looked pretty similar to my off-road Shoei, plus the close-out price was unbeatable! Thanks Revzilla! I love the cash back too. Got the Hornet today, great fit and very lightweight too. Mar 19, 2015

Bart B: I usually keep two helmets - one for dirt and one for street/light off-road. Since both helmets need to be replaced, I decided to try the dual sport version so I only have to buy one helmet. I currently own a Shoei, it fits my head shape, and it's a great brand - so that part was easy. I look forward to getting more bang for my buck from this helmet since I can use it for all conditions. Answer this · Send to friends Good question? Yes (1) No (0)
Mark L: This helmet fits my head shape perfectly. The visibility is very good with this helmet, as is the air flow, and it is fairly quiet for this style. I have not tried the Arai though, so it may fit just as well. You have to try both, and decide which one fits you better. The Arai is very popular with a lot of adventure tourers, so I presume it is good. It also has more colour options available in North America. Feb 12, 2014

David S: I own both in size XL
The sizing is very similar.

I have ridden in the Xd3 for several years and absolutely love it. I have only used the Hornet for a few months.

So far I like it, but don't find the field of view as wide because of the way the shield tips up.

For the price I think it's an excellent helmet.

William D: Yeah I am a Shoei guy from way back. I really do not know how it compares, but already rode twice with it and it is great. Just what I was looking for, on the gravel and short hwy in between. Had the bike up to 60 ( Very cold out that day) for 15 miles on the hwy in between gravel roads and it was good. Feb 11, 2014

Jay C: Both are awesome helmets but at the end of the day it's about comfort. I like the Shoei over the Arai. I do have a larger oval head too. I wore it on a two week 5,000 mile trip and would not bother taking the Shoei off at the gas station...it was that nice of a helmet. Feb 11, 2014

Daniel H asked: Is it worth the $85 more than the AGV AX-8 EVO DS? It seems superior on your review although I wonder if stretching the budget is worth it. Oct 12, 2013
Answer this · Send to friends Good question? Yes (1) No (0)
Liran A: Totally worth it , this helmet is way better then the AGV (and I own the GP-TECH so I don't have nothing against AGV),
I will recommend to stretch it a little bit for a better helmet

Paul R: I haven't used the AGV, but have never regretted spending the money for the Shoei. I've had it for over a year now, that's what about $7/month to make up the difference in price for the Shoei? I'm sure the AGV is great as well, but no regrets for me.

Linden S: Is $85 even an issue when it comes to safety gear? Is your head worth it?
The main reason I purchased this helmet, is because it is eyeglass friendly. The hornet is light weight and comfortable. I just wish I could find a darker shield; they only offer smoke and clear. The smoke shield is not a problem at night.
hope this helps

Reply to Linden Good answer? Yes (0) No (0)
Daniel H: Thanks Linden, but yes $85 always an issue, otherwise I'd be the owner of RevZilla...wait..no...of Shoei. AGV and Shoei are both going to keep my head "safe", so that's not the question. The question is: Now that I'm not rich yet and I'm pushing my budget for a $400 helmet, is there a great difference that would make me change my mind about the bad-ass AX-8 Dual EVO? I believe given your-and the other- comments that there's such difference. Thank you all Oct 14, 2013
Alvaro M: I Don't know the AGV, But I'm very pleased with the hornet, what I can tell you so, is that you can decide comparing the weight of each one of the helmets. Oct 14, 2013

Thanks in advance!!

Martin D: Brian,
I like the quality of the Hornet DS. Mine does not have a tinted visor but I typically prefer a clear visor and utilize sunglasses. For long distance (4-6 hours) riding I still prefer my Shoei Qwest helmet as there is less buffeting. You may have a different experience as I'm 6'4" and "up in the air" a bit more than some. I use the Hornet on a Tiger 800XC with a windshield extension.

eduardo p: Brian, it doesn't come with the tinted visor, you have to buy it as an extra. At highway speed it doesn't work that good, you can feel the wind over 75mph.. If your bike has a high windshield it's perfect, if not, I recomend another kind of helmet.
Hope this helps

Peter U asked: I have used Shoei helmets for years. I currently have a Multitec which will need to be replaced soon after 7 yrs of use. My question on the Hornet DS helmet is how noisy is it on the freeways and is it comfortable in cold weather? Sep 3, 2013
Answer this · Send to friends Good question? Yes (0) No (0)
David C: I haven't used helmet in cold weather yet so I'm not sure how to comment on it. In hot weather I'm very happy with the ventilation.

The amount of noise the helmet makes at high way speeds 80+ is noticeable but a little less than a lower priced helmet (Sparx) I use to have. I have noticed that the wind and turning head in high wind can feel like a sail some times but I'm still happy with the money spent and worth the extra ventilation. I'm not totally sold on pin face shields yet but it hasn't been right conditions yet to truely test them.

Heinz E: Hi. The Hornet is my first adventure helmet, have only used MX helmets before. Hornet fits like a glove once worn in and very comfortable even in cold weather. I can not compare it to any other similar helmet but would say that wind noise is average to good. Face shield works great and visability is good. Bought a SHOEI VFX-W couple of months ago also from Revzilla, AWESOME helmet. Can not go wrong with SHOEI. Sep 26, 2013

Frank S: I ride a GS Adv and mostly wear earplugs. I find the Hornet DS on par with other helmets - despite the peak. It is the most comfortable helmet I have ever owned.

No chance to ride in cold weather for me yet here in TX, it is quite okay when it gets down to 75F

Paul S asked: Shoei Hornet DS shows conflicting reports in the reviews about fitting speakers into this helmet. I use the SENA SMH10 unit and need to know if the speakers will fit comfortably into this helmet? Mar 17, 2015
Answer this · Send to friends Good question? Yes (0) No (0)
Jeffrey T: Elverthing fits, it does take more time to route the speaker wire. The microphone does have to go to the side of your mouth and it helps if you close the mouth vent. Did a 3400 mile trip with the wife in october through rain and wind and the setup worked great. Mar 17, 2015
Reply to Jeffrey Good answer? Yes (1) No (0)
Ehren I: I use the Sena unit as well and the stock sena speakers do fit just fine with enough room for earplugs as well if desired. I have also used earbuds on occasion, however with earbuds and the stock speakers there is not much room, sometimes its too stuffed.

This also depends on ear size, if your ears tend to stick out a bit more i think there is a chance they could touch the speakers and it can become annoying after a bit of time, mine tend to fit just fine. Also it depends on if the helmet fits your head, i tried arai as well as bell and gmax and the only DS helmet that fit my head was the shoei helmet. I think if the helmet fits your head type you shouldn't have too many issues with the speakers.

As far as helmet fitment, i ended up putting a stick in velcro on the helmet and then sticking the speakers to the velcro, they could be glued in as well, however i like to be able to remove them when i want.

Daniel H asked: Compared to the AGV AX-8 EVO DS, the Shoei seems slimmer and better suited for everyday road and "occasional off-road", but is it worth the extra $85? The AGV seems to have better ventilation. Oct 12, 2013

John M: Hey Daniel - Have put 1500mi on my Shoei Hornet DS with the recent KTM rally in Steamboat Springs. Ran it thru rain, sun and 300mi off road on my 690R.

Love the fit and performance - Shoei quality shows thru in all areas.
This helmet fits rounder heads. Works well at 70mph or 10mph over single track.
Best DS helmet I have ever found...visor up/down, googles or sunglasses.
Too much ventilation can cause excess noise in some helmets.
Good Luck,

Crawford R: I can't comment on the AGV, but, for me, the Hornet DS is worth the $485 or so I paid for it a year and a half ago. The venting is rather nice, and it is stable in the open wind. The peak doesn't extend very far, blocking, perhaps, an addiitonal 1/2" of sunlight, but it's very quiet at speed and comfortable. It fit my head much better than the dualsport Arai. Oct 14, 2013

Richard B: Can't say as I have not checked out the AGV AX-8 EVO DS, but I am very happy with the Shoei. Oct 24, 2013

A shopper asked: I just tried the Arai XD3 in an XL and it was much too narrow for my head. I have a round to earth shaped head and I wear an Arai Ram III helmet in an XL which fits very comfortably. I was wondering if the Shoei Hornet in an XL or 2XL fit a round head that won't fit into an Arai XD3. Jun 6, 2011

shughes72: I wear an XL and my head is shaped like an alien, round up high. Its hard for me to get a good fit. I have had this Shoei for a month and its excellent. No headaches or sore ears, but tight enough not to move around. Sep 27, 2011

Grinson: From my experience arai helmets don't fit me very well, however I own two shoei helmets (including the hornet) and it fits perfect. I would consider a shoei xl because I had the same issue with the arai xd3 where it was too narrow for my head whereas the shoei does not press against my forehead or anywhere else for that matter. Royce K asked: From online searches, I've gathered that some MX goggles are too large to comfortably work with this helmet. For those that do successfully use goggles with the Hornet: which make and model goggles are you using? Jan 14, 2015

Dimitri R: It is tight, but I use my goggles with it. I think I have ProGrip goggles that are medium sized. After a recent trip the foam did come off the goggles, but I think that is more from not wanting to take them off the helmet when putting it on and taking it off. the visor and Lens on the helmet makes it difficult to get goggles on and off. With goggles I would consider a strap eliminator kit.
I like this helmet, the main issue for me is the visor aerodynamics on long highway rides. It causes me a lot of neck and back pain on longer rides above 50 mph.

A shopper asked: Wich helmet is better? Shoei hornet ds, agv ax8 ds, arai xd4 or BMW enduro helmet. Dec 19, 2012

VanBeidaRiffer: The one that fits you best, perhaps. My AGV AX-8 DS EVO has great "character" (or is it quirks?) and is light, cool, and loud. My Shoei VFW-X is practically perfect in every way. I love them both. Arais do not fit me well (oval head) and I cannot comment on the Bimmer helmet.

Try all of them on if you can. Revzilla has a great return policy.

A shopper asked: Looking at the Hornet DS, is the fit similar to the Shoei Qwest ? May 9, 2015

Dimitri R: yes.
The DS tends to catch a lot of air at speeds above 40 mph the newer version has better aerodynamics.

A shopper asked: Is it a snell2010 or a a snell2005 helmet? The product detail describes it as a snell 2005 while the video shows a snell 2010 specification written on the inside of the helmet. Feb 21, 2014

John D: It says snell2005 in the description of the helmet but I bought mine in December 2013 and when I got it that was the first thing I checked. Mine is snell 2010. Mar 5, 2014

A shopper asked: What goggle fits the DS best? I've tried on an Oakley, and Scott Recoil and OTGs. All very nice but they contact both the top and the bottom of the helmets eye port. Thanks! Jun 22, 2014

RevZilla: The best way to combat fog is to use a pinlock shield and lens, which we've linked to below. The pinlock feature aids in preventing fogging by acting as a double paned window does. Check out our video on the pinlock system below. Jan 24, 2013
