Great fit, super value. I was not impressed with the fit or the noise level of the street Shoei helmet I wore before going to Arai. The Hornet, however, fits great and is very quiet. I have not have the opportunity to check out the vents yet but since most of my riding in this helmet will be off road on my 650L it probably won't make much difference. Great find. February 16, 2015
Perfect helmet I've another Shoei DS Helmet, it fits me perfectly and comfortably, but it's time for a new one and I choose to replace it with the same. Great fit, protection and purpose. February 9, 2015
That's better! I discovered that a dual sport helmet worn behind a lowish touring windshield can enhance aerodynamics and reduce buffeting. This was true on a V-strom, an ST1100 and now especially on my GL1800 with Windbender shield. You may be a candidate if you find airflow more smooth and quiet with your regular visor up. Tried cheap versions but not happy mostly with fit. My favorite GT-Air Shoei fit my round head like a glove so when RevZ offered the Shoei DS for $350, I was ALL over it. Same Shoei fit and quality. I think the peak should be longer and wider for the sun visor effect. I extended mine. Love this helmet with this bike. For my naked sport bike, the GT-Air is perfect. February 4, 2015
Shoei's just fit me After trying a variety of brands I've come to the conclusion that Shoei's fit me best. I've been waiting a long time for the DS Hornet to go on sale and they finally did and I jumped on it. The fit is great and the quality excellent. The ventilation is also very good. If I had to come up with one negative thing, it's the size of the helmet. It's visibly larger than other DS helmets I've owned. February 2, 2015
Just what I was looking for at an excellent price Been using this helmet for about a month now and I love it! I got a dual-sport Honda in June and have been looking for a cooler and more convenient helmet then the RF1100 I've been riding and this was the answer. Please bear in mind that the RF1100 is my basis for comparison to the Hornet. Bought the same size as my RF1100 and it fits perfectly but is much lighter and more compact feeling. Also the visibility is a lot better, especially when looking down. The air flow seems better too although I'm really waiting for summer to judge this, hopefully it will be cooler. Like the visor and the ability to use goggles (open face) for around town as summers are really hot here. So far, during January, heat is not a problem so I haven't opened the vents much to really judge airflow but the flow thru the mouthpiece is nice. This shield seems a bit more prone to fogging necessitating opening the shield at lights. The Hornet seems to be about the as loud the RF1100 regarding noise,( I wouldn't call either quiet) but the visor doesn't seem to make any difference. Also, the visor doesn't seem to effect the aerodynamics at speed either, although my Honda can't do much more then 70 so it's not a big consideration for me. All told, I'm quite pleased with this helmet and would recommend it to anyone (with a Shoei shaped head) for this sort of use. January 26, 2015
Great Fit and Looks for a Dual Sport Helmet I have purchased 2 Dual Sport Helmets over the last 18 months and none of them were SHOEI helments. I just couldn't get into the price of their Dual Sport helmets, but this one was priced right at the right time. I have worn my SHOEI RF1100 for 6 years before switching to a Dual Sport Helmet and knew I needed to get back to a SHOEI as soon as I could. I started wearing this Hornet DS and it is comfortable and easy to hear my Sena Headset speakers. The visor works well, but like another poster said, I would like to see one more click up, to remove it further out of my sight line. The Hornet DS is quieter than my other two Dual Sport Helmets and is perfect for my cold weather riding. I will return to the non visor Dual Sport Helment once the heat of summer returns. My only disappointment is the size (length) of the Beak Visor. It looks a little tiny on the helmet and does not function very well for blocking out the sun during it's low angle period, of the winter months. I wish that the Beak Visor was longer or that there was an aftermarket replacement available. Overall, this Hornet DS is a great helmet and matches SHOEI in it's fit, durability and comfort, that I have learned to expect from this manufacturer. January 20, 2015
Shoei Hornet DS Helmet This is a great helmet and Snell M2010 approved so if you are looking for a great helmet that is comfortable and safe I would recommend this helmet. This is a great dual sport helmet and can be used well in both environments. If you need to wear goggles when you are off-road this helmet works great for this. Two things to note. The style of this helmet leans more towards off road with an more aggressive face. So if you want a more street type helmet I wouldn't recommend this. I wanted the Hornet XS but they do not sell it in the US market just Europe. Checked with Shoei and they do not plan on selling it here or at least any time soon. So if you are looking for a dual-sport and need a helmet don't wait around for the XS model and just get this one. Also, the Matte Gray looks a lot darker on the website. For a better picture look at the video and you will see a better image. Regardless how dark you want it the Matte Gray looks great. December 22, 2014
Good everyday helmet Been wearing my Hornet for a few months. So far it fits comfortably but I would call it just slightly loose. I have the medium but the next size down was impossible to get on and the large would almost spin on my head. I might try thicker cheek pads now that it seems to have stopped breaking in. The peak could be a little longer but for the purpose it's a good balance. Any longer and it would become too much of an airfoil on the highway. The visor needs a more definite just slightly open click. I find that if you open it to the first stop and lower it gently you'll find it has a vague almost there stop with a small gap that clears fog and lets in just a little air. I wish the visor had a clip on the right side so you could raise it with your throttle hand instead of letting off the clutch or reach across your face. September 4, 2014

I currently own a Shoei, it fits my head shape, and it's a great brand - so that part was easy. I look forward to getting more bang for my buck from this helmet since I can use it for all conditions. Daniel H asked: Is it worth the $85 more than the AGV AX-8 EVO DS? It seems superior on your review although I wonder if stretching the budget is worth it. Oct 12, 2013
Answer this · Send to friends Good question? Yes (1) No (0)
Moshe H: Totally worth it , this helmet is way better then the AGV (and I own the GP-TECH so I don't have nothing against AGV),
I will recommend to stretch it a little bit for a better helmet

Paul R: I haven't used the AGV, but have never regretted spending the money for the Shoei. I've had it for over a year now, that's what about $7/month to make up the difference in price for the Shoei? I'm sure the AGV is great as well, but no regrets for me.

Linden S: Is $85 even an issue when it comes to safety gear? Is your head worth it?
The main reason I purchased this helmet, is because it is eyeglass friendly. The hornet is light weight and comfortable. I just wish I could find a darker shield; they only offer smoke and clear. The smoke shield is not a problem at night.
hope this helps

Daniel H: Thanks Linden, but yes $85 always an issue, otherwise I'd be the owner of RevZilla...wait..no...of Shoei. AGV and Shoei are both going to keep my head "safe", so that's not the question. The question is: Now that I'm not rich yet and I'm pushing my budget for a $400 helmet, is there a great difference that would make me change my mind about the bad-ass AX-8 Dual EVO? I believe given your-and the other- comments that there's such difference. Thank you all Oct 14, 2013
Alvaro M: I Don't know the AGV, But I'm very pleased with the hornet, what I can tell you so, is that you can decide comparing the weight of each one of the helmets. Oct 14, 2013

Mark L: This helmet fits my head shape perfectly. The visibility is very good with this helmet, as is the air flow, and it is fairly quiet for this style. I have not tried the Arai though, so it may fit just as well. You have to try both, and decide which one fits you better. The Arai is very popular with a lot of adventure tourers, so I presume it is good. It also has more colour options available in North America. Feb 12, 2014

David S: I own both in size XL
The sizing is very similar.

I have ridden in the Xd3 for several years and absolutely love it. I have only used the Hornet for a few months.

So far I like it, but don't find the field of view as wide because of the way the shield tips up.

For the price I think it's an excellent helmet.

William D: Yeah I am a Shoei guy from way back. I really do not know how it compares, but already rode twice with it and it is great. Just what I was looking for, on the gravel and short hwy in between. Had the bike up to 60 ( Very cold out that day) for 15 miles on the hwy in between gravel roads and it was good. Feb 11, 2014

Jay C: Both are awesome helmets but at the end of the day it's about comfort. I like the Shoei over the Arai. I do have a larger oval head too. I wore it on a two week 5,000 mile trip and would not bother taking the Shoei off at the gas station...it was that nice of a helmet. Feb 11, 2014

Peter U asked: I have used Shoei helmets for years. I currently have a Multitec which will need to be replaced soon after 7 yrs of use. My question on the Hornet DS helmet is how noisy is it on the freeways and is it comfortable in cold weather? Sep 3, 2013
Answer this · Send to friends Good question? Yes (0) No (0)
David C: I haven't used helmet in cold weather yet so I'm not sure how to comment on it. In hot weather I'm very happy with the ventilation.

The amount of noise the helmet makes at high way speeds 80+ is noticeable but a little less than a lower priced helmet (Sparx) I use to have. I have noticed that the wind and turning head in high wind can feel like a sail some times but I'm still happy with the money spent and worth the extra ventilation. I'm not totally sold on pin face shields yet but it hasn't been right conditions yet to truely test them.

Heinz E: Hi. The Hornet is my first adventure helmet, have only used MX helmets before. Hornet fits like a glove once worn in and very comfortable even in cold weather. I can not compare it to any other similar helmet but would say that wind noise is average to good. Face shield works great and visability is good. Bought a SHOEI VFX-W couple of months ago also from Revzilla, AWESOME helmet. Can not go wrong with SHOEI. Sep 26, 2013

Frank S: I ride a GS Adv and mostly wear earplugs. I find the Hornet DS on par with other helmets - despite the peak. It is the most comfortable helmet I have ever owned.

No chance to ride in cold weather for me yet here in TX, it is quite okay when it gets down to 75F

Daniel H asked: Compared to the AGV AX-8 EVO DS, the Shoei seems slimmer and better suited for everyday road and "occasional off-road", but is it worth the extra $85? The AGV seems to have better ventilation. Oct 12, 2013

John M: Hey Daniel - Have put 1500mi on my Shoei Hornet DS with the recent KTM rally in Steamboat Springs. Ran it thru rain, sun and 300mi off road on my 690R.

Love the fit and performance - Shoei quality shows thru in all areas.
This helmet fits rounder heads. Works well at 70mph or 10mph over single track.
Best DS helmet I have ever found...visor up/down, googles or sunglasses.
Too much ventilation can cause excess noise in some helmets.
Good Luck,

Crawford R: I can't comment on the AGV, but, for me, the Hornet DS is worth the $485 or so I paid for it a year and a half ago. The venting is rather nice, and it is stable in the open wind. The peak doesn't extend very far, blocking, perhaps, an addiitonal 1/2" of sunlight, but it's very quiet at speed and comfortable. It fit my head much better than the dualsport Arai. Oct 14, 2013

A shopper asked: I just tried the Arai XD3 in an XL and it was much too narrow for my head. I have a round to earth shaped head and I wear an Arai Ram III helmet in an XL which fits very comfortably. I was wondering if the Shoei Hornet in an XL or 2XL fit a round head that won't fit into an Arai XD3. Jun 6, 2011

shughes72: I wear an XL and my head is shaped like an alien, round up high. Its hard for me to get a good fit. I have had this Shoei for a month and its excellent. No headaches or sore ears, but tight enough not to move around. Sep 27, 2011

Grinson: From my experience arai helmets don't fit me very well, however I own two shoei helmets (including the hornet) and it fits perfect. I would consider a shoei xl because I had the same issue with the arai xd3 where it was too narrow for my head whereas the shoei does not press against my forehead or anywhere else for that matter. Royce K asked: From online searches, I've gathered that some MX goggles are too large to comfortably work with this helmet. For those that do successfully use goggles with the Hornet: which make and model goggles are you using? Jan 14, 2015
Answer this · Send to friends Good question? Yes (0) No (0)
Dimitri R: It is tight, but I use my goggles with it. I think I have ProGrip goggles that are medium sized. After a recent trip the foam did come off the goggles, but I think that is more from not wanting to take them off the helmet when putting it on and taking it off. the visor and Lens on the helmet makes it difficult to get goggles on and off. With goggles I would consider a strap eliminator kit.
I like this helmet, the main issue for me is the visor aerodynamics on long highway rides. It causes me a lot of neck and back pain on longer rides above 50 mph.

VanBeidaRiffer: The one that fits you best, perhaps. My AGV AX-8 DS EVO has great "character" (or is it quirks?) and is light, cool, and loud. My Shoei VFW-X is practically perfect in every way. I love them both. Arais do not fit me well (oval head) and I cannot comment on the Bimmer helmet.

Try all of them on if you can. Revzilla has a great return policy.

RevZilla: The best way to combat fog is to use a pinlock shield and lens, which we've linked to below. The pinlock feature aids in preventing fogging by acting as a double paned window does. Check out our video on the pinlock system below. Jan 24, 2013
