after a few rides very comfortable this helmet is noisier than my street helmet. Another shoei. It also pulls more at freeway speed. for more street riding I would recommend a street helmet. such as rf 1200 August 4, 2014
Helmet So far the helmet has been pretty good. Fits great, at speed it is great! Nice wide viewing field. Would be 5the stars but they need to fix the fogging problem, it is absolutely terrible. Thats the only down fall of the helmet. I have roughly 5k miles with it. July 7, 2014
Overall Good Helmet I wanted a snell rated helmet and this one was a little more inexpensive then the arai. Kind of overpriced for what it is but it is definitely a quality product. Fits snug and does allow a moderate amount of air flow with vents open, but can get hot. Looks very badass, I have the white one and it provides good visibility while looking very fresh. Visor catches some wind when going 70+, I wouldn't get this helmet if you plan on doing a bunch of highway riding (or any DS helmet for that matter). I give it 4/5 being that it could allow for more air flow and could come down in price a bit. June 2, 2014
Not an effective DS design I know, how can you give a great Shoei legendary namesake helmet an average score. Excellent build quality, protection, comfort, etc. However this is supposed to be a DS design with a functional peak/visor, and it isn't. The peak extension is so limited it virtually does not block the sun at all. And creates a low whistle right at my optimum speed. Seems like an exercise in looking DS fashion, but the design does not fulfill purpose. March 6, 2014
Really like this helmet Moved to this helmet from a Shoei Qwest. This helmet seems lighter and fits me much more comfortably than the Qwest does. Pretty cool looking helmet though. February 10, 2014
Overall, I'm very pleased with this helmet. Overall, I'm very pleased with this helmet. I have a narrow/oval head, and wear a size 7. The small was snug when I first put it on, and I thought it would be too snug but has loosened slightly after a few hundred miles and is now comfortably. I have owned other Shoei helmets and the fit is very similar. It has a wide field of view with the shield down. One nit is that the shield is a bit flimsy and requires me to push it all the way down from the center of the shield. I have read some reviews and some have said that fitting goggles doesn't work with this helmet. Having the option to wear goggles was a big factor in me buying one of these hybrid helmets. I'm pleased to say that my spy mx goggles fit without gaps, but just barely. If you have wide or tall goggles, they likely will not fit in the opening. The shield also closes nicely with my goggles on (maybe the flexibility of the shield helps with this). Wind noise is of course more than a regular street helmet but not too bad at speed. One caveat though, I'm a dual sport rider and have not gotten over 65 mph yet while wearing this. The visor catches some wind but not like a regular mx helmet. It's not enough to yank your head when you turn it or raise it. Overall, I'm pleased. I just wish Shoei would come down on the price. It doesn't make sense that this helmet is almost $500 when a Snell approved mx or street helmet is half that. January 21, 2014
Excellent Helmet, But... The helmet was exceptionally tight on the cheeks. My 24 inch head seemed to fit well, but my cheeks were heavily compressed. I was getting ready to ship this back, then I noticed that the cheek pads were replaceable with thinner factory pads. I switched from 39 mm to 31 mm and the helmet fit very well. Shoei ended up making out on this deal in that I had to shell out another $44.50 (no kidding!!) to get the thinner pads. They really need to set up a customer program to allow a new customer to trade pads one time free. As a result, I will not buy another Shoei and I have informed others of my bad experience. Raymond W: Simply the best bang for your bucks and protection for your head Jul 7, 2014
Anthony B: Recommended by a friend. Sounds like the Shoei or Arai are the only options for best quality Jun 23, 2014
Marcus s: quality Jun 13, 2014
Bart B: I usually keep two helmets - one for dirt and one for street/light off-road. Since both helmets need to be replaced, I decided to try the dual sport version so I only have to buy one helmet. I currently own a Shoei, it fits my head shape, and it's a great brand - so that part was easy. I look forward to getting more bang for my buck from this helmet since I can use it for all conditions. Mike M: I have a Shoei head. And the Revzilla video hit the deal home. May 25, 2014
A S: Shoei fits my head perfectly, minimal wind noise and very light & comfy, great with my Sensa for music or intercom Apr 11, 2014
Dan P: Shoei is a quality helmet and the Hornet DS got very good reviews on Revzilla. Jan 15, 2014
Box Cargo - Hugo Higuera S: VERY NICE HELMET, THE SIZE IS MORE SMALL THAN THE SIZE OF PAGE Oct 29, 2013
Donald G: I think helmet is equal to the Arai XD-4 Helmet and is also lighter. Overall the reviews pointed me to the Shoei in the end. Looking forward to lots of great riding with this new helmet. Sep 23, 2013
John M: Shoei quality, performance and excellent multi purpose design. Works well at all speeds and conditions - on/off road. Sep 21, 2013

Daniel H asked: Is it worth the $85 more than the AGV AX-8 EVO DS? It seems superior on your review although I wonder if stretching the budget is worth it. Oct 12, 2013

Paul R: I haven't used the AGV, but have never regretted spending the money for the Shoei. I've had it for over a year now, that's what about $7/month to make up the difference in price for the Shoei? I'm sure the AGV is great as well, but no regrets for me.

Moshe H: Totally worth it , this helmet is way better then the AGV (and I own the GP-TECH so I don't have nothing against AGV),
I will recommend to stretch it a little bit for a better helmet

Linden S: Is $85 even an issue when it comes to safety gear? Is your head worth it?
The main reason I purchased this helmet, is because it is eyeglass friendly. The hornet is light weight and comfortable. I just wish I could find a darker shield; they only offer smoke and clear. The smoke shield is not a problem at night.
hope this helps

Daniel H: Thanks Linden, but yes $85 always an issue, otherwise I'd be the owner of RevZilla...wait..no...of Shoei. AGV and Shoei are both going to keep my head "safe", so that's not the question. The question is: Now that I'm not rich yet and I'm pushing my budget for a $400 helmet, is there a great difference that would make me change my mind about the bad-ass AX-8 Dual EVO? I believe given your-and the other- comments that there's such difference. Thank you all Oct 14, 2013
Alvaro M: I Don't know the AGV, But I'm very pleased with the hornet, what I can tell you so, is that you can decide comparing the weight of each one of the helmets. Oct 14, 2013

A S asked: Is this or the Arai XD4 better? Feb 11, 2014

Mark L: This helmet fits my head shape perfectly. The visibility is very good with this helmet, as is the air flow, and it is fairly quiet for this style. I have not tried the Arai though, so it may fit just as well. You have to try both, and decide which one fits you better. The Arai is very popular with a lot of adventure tourers, so I presume it is good. It also has more colour options available in North America. Feb 12, 2014

David S: I own both in size XL
The sizing is very similar.

I have ridden in the Xd3 for several years and absolutely love it. I have only used the Hornet for a few months.

So far I like it, but don't find the field of view as wide because of the way the shield tips up.

For the price I think it's an excellent helmet.

William D: Yeah I am a Shoei guy from way back. I really do not know how it compares, but already rode twice with it and it is great. Just what I was looking for, on the gravel and short hwy in between. Had the bike up to 60 ( Very cold out that day) for 15 miles on the hwy in between gravel roads and it was good. Feb 11, 2014

Jay C: Both are awesome helmets but at the end of the day it's about comfort. I like the Shoei over the Arai. I do have a larger oval head too. I wore it on a two week 5,000 mile trip and would not bother taking the Shoei off at the gas station...it was that nice of a helmet. Feb 11, 2014

Peter U asked: I have used Shoei helmets for years. I currently have a Multitec which will need to be replaced soon after 7 yrs of use. My question on the Hornet DS helmet is how noisy is it on the freeways and is it comfortable in cold weather? Sep 3, 2013
Answer this · Send to friends Good question? Yes (0) No (0)
David C: I haven't used helmet in cold weather yet so I'm not sure how to comment on it. In hot weather I'm very happy with the ventilation.

The amount of noise the helmet makes at high way speeds 80+ is noticeable but a little less than a lower priced helmet (Sparx) I use to have. I have noticed that the wind and turning head in high wind can feel like a sail some times but I'm still happy with the money spent and worth the extra ventilation. I'm not totally sold on pin face shields yet but it hasn't been right conditions yet to truely test them.

Heinz E: Hi. The Hornet is my first adventure helmet, have only used MX helmets before. Hornet fits like a glove once worn in and very comfortable even in cold weather. I can not compare it to any other similar helmet but would say that wind noise is average to good. Face shield works great and visability is good. Bought a SHOEI VFX-W couple of months ago also from Revzilla, AWESOME helmet. Can not go wrong with SHOEI. Sep 26, 2013

Frank S: I ride a GS Adv and mostly wear earplugs. I find the Hornet DS on par with other helmets - despite the peak. It is the most comfortable helmet I have ever owned.

No chance to ride in cold weather for me yet here in TX, it is quite okay when it gets down to 75F

Daniel H asked: Compared to the AGV AX-8 EVO DS, the Shoei seems slimmer and better suited for everyday road and "occasional off-road", but is it worth the extra $85? The AGV seems to have better ventilation. Oct 12, 2013

John M: Hey Daniel - Have put 1500mi on my Shoei Hornet DS with the recent KTM rally in Steamboat Springs. Ran it thru rain, sun and 300mi off road on my 690R.

Love the fit and performance - Shoei quality shows thru in all areas.
This helmet fits rounder heads. Works well at 70mph or 10mph over single track.
Best DS helmet I have ever found...visor up/down, googles or sunglasses.
Too much ventilation can cause excess noise in some helmets.
Good Luck,

Crawford R: I can't comment on the AGV, but, for me, the Hornet DS is worth the $485 or so I paid for it a year and a half ago. The venting is rather nice, and it is stable in the open wind. The peak doesn't extend very far, blocking, perhaps, an addiitonal 1/2" of sunlight, but it's very quiet at speed and comfortable. It fit my head much better than the dualsport Arai. Oct 14, 2013

A shopper asked: I just tried the Arai XD3 in an XL and it was much too narrow for my head. I have a round to earth shaped head and I wear an Arai Ram III helmet in an XL which fits very comfortably. I was wondering if the Shoei Hornet in an XL or 2XL fit a round head that won't fit into an Arai XD3. Jun 6, 2011

shughes72: I wear an XL and my head is shaped like an alien, round up high. Its hard for me to get a good fit. I have had this Shoei for a month and its excellent. No headaches or sore ears, but tight enough not to move around. Sep 27, 2011

Grinson: From my experience arai helmets don't fit me very well, however I own two shoei helmets (including the hornet) and it fits perfect. I would consider a shoei xl because I had the same issue with the arai xd3 where it was too narrow for my head whereas the shoei does not press against my forehead or anywhere else for that matter. RevZilla: The best way to combat fog is to use a pinlock shield and lens, which we've linked to below. The pinlock feature aids in preventing fogging by acting as a double paned window does. Check out our video on the pinlock system below. Jan 24, 2013

VanBeidaRiffer: The one that fits you best, perhaps. My AGV AX-8 DS EVO has great "character" (or is it quirks?) and is light, cool, and loud. My Shoei VFW-X is practically perfect in every way. I love them both. Arais do not fit me well (oval head) and I cannot comment on the Bimmer helmet.

Try all of them on if you can. Revzilla has a great return policy.
