TecMate OptiMate 4 Dual Program Battery Charger for BMW CANbus 4.7 5 28 28
Nice, multipurpose charger I've used this charger for everything from a Porsche, connected via the cigar lighter, to a lawn mower, to an actual motorcycle. Following the mfrs guidelines for both the vehicles and the charger, I was able to top up any battery I've encountered. My only failure was a 10-yr-old battery that was so deeply discharged that it couldn't be saved. Highly recommend. August 25, 2014
Just plug it in. Easy to use. Specific model for BMW CanBus. Better value over BMW charger July 7, 2014
Excellent Does exactly what its supposed to do--just plug it in when the bike is in the garage, and forget about it. Your battery will always be topped off and in perfect condition. May 29, 2014
Great display and features Does it all. You know exactly the state of charge and function with this charger due to the intuitive and easy to read display. Way better than my "other" chargers! Very happy and a great price. May 12, 2014
Works great and is a much less expensive than the BMW Canbus charger I looked around quite a bit to see if the BMW Canbus charger could be purchased inexpensively and it wasn't available. After I read the reviews here I decided to go for this charger which was $50-$80 less and I'm glad I did. the OptiMate 4 Canbus charger worked great on my 2009 BMW F800ST. I knew my battery was low because our weather has been horrible and I've barely been able to ride and get my bike charged up. 2 days after the purchase of this charger I plugged this in to my bike as the battery was dead. The charger came set to the BMW Canbus mode so other than finding a wall socket it took care of the rest. I switched modes and charged my riding lawn mower too. There are a number of lights on the charger so you really need to see the instructions the first time but once you've seen them you should be all set. I'd buy another in a heartbeat. I've only had it a short while and I certainly got my money's worth. Keep in mind that if you have anything tied into the Canbus power when this charger starts you may turn on that device. I had a GPS device tied into the Canbus and it turned on due to the charger. I ended up directly wiring the device to the taillight to avoid the Canbus issue. April 29, 2014
Good feedback regarding battery status The indicator lights do a good job in showing the state of your battery but if you don't normally pay attention to these sort of things you're better off with a cheaper product. I bought it mainly because it is advertised for BMW brand bikes February 24, 2014
This product has great features Very easy to use and works as advertised. Plugs right into BMW CANbus with no problems. February 10, 2014
Confusing light show, but great performance. I purchased this charger to maintain the battery on my f800gs over the long winter in Michigan. I had the bike sitting with no charger for a couple months before I purchased this optimate. The battery was sounding weak the one day I was able to ride. Charger plugs right in to the BMW outlet and works seamlessly. The array of LEDs on the charger are a bit confusing, and I had to read the descriptions and watch a couple videos from optimate to decode what the charger was doing. The charger has indicated that it has repaired my battery, and the batter does sound audibly much better. February 10, 2014

Rodney C: I purchased this for my 2014 BMW F800GS Adventure. Needed a charger that would work for the Canbus system on the bike. It works great with no issues to date. It also has a three year warranty which is very nice to see a company stand behind something more than 90 days. Jun 2, 2014

Thomas L: I investigated numerous chargers/batter conditioners for my 2009 BMW F800ST. All reviews on forums and online were positive and the charger is 1/2 the price of the BMW model. Additionally several people indicated this charger corrected battery issues through the automatic reconditioning cycle. Phillip B asked: I don't see "CANbus" listed anywhere in my owners manual. Anybody know if this will work for a 2013 BMW F800GT ? Oct 16, 2013

Barry V: Hi, Phillip,
This charger can be used in two different modes. Mine was already set for the CANbus mode upon arrival. It is fairly simple to switch modes, the instructions are included with the charger, and the lights on the unit will tell you if the charger is operating properly.
I am pleased with this charger. It allows me to charge the battery through the CANbus on my R1200GS at the factory socket.
Hope this helps.

Alp B: I am not familiar with F800GT.
I used the charger on my R1200GS and it needed the CANbus version of the charger.
If your manual does not describe CANbus mode then most probably your charger is the standard version and will not work with a CANbus system.
Manual for CANbus version has detailed description of CANbus operation.

Muhammad H: Dear Philip,
I'm not exactly sure if your bike is fitted with the din plug socket. If you have it, you can use the directly into the plug n play. If not, u have to use the alligator clips direct to your batt and follow their simple instructions provided.

Diego B: If you have a Power socket will work. CANbus is the systems that manage the BMW computer, that let them know a diagnostic of your motorcycle. Op 4 is design to not cook this system when you connect it to the Power Socket. Oct 16, 2013

Ron S: it is dual program so just use it non-canbus and make a direct connection to the battery. It works flawlessly this way. Oct 16, 2013

A shopper asked: Can I charge 60-80 Ah car battery with this charger? Dec 21, 2013
Answer this · Send to friends Good question? Yes (0) No (0)
Ira B: The instructions state that the charger is for 3Ah to 50Ah. The maximum output current is stated to be 0.8A.

The charger has a 48 hour charge safety limit. If you are using it for a 'severely discharged automobile battery' you may need to reset the charger (as per the instructions)

So I think the answer is yes.

George K: Yes you can charge your car 60-80 Ah battery! You can charge boats, sailboats R.V.'s lawn tractors and any kind of battery! This is the best charger you can get! It doesn't weigh 15 lbs like most chargers. Its portable! I will attach mine to a piece of wood and hang it from a nail on the wall. If I need to take it with I can put it in the BMW tank bag of glove compartment. Dec 22, 2013

Sergiu S: The cover of the instructions manual says 3-50 Ah within 48 hours, up to 70Ah for long term maintenance. I would try an actual car battery charger as it may take a lesser time. Best is to submit your question to Tecmate. Dec 21, 2013

Barry V: Optimate recommends this charger for batteries up to 50ah. Might be pushing it to go any higher. It works well on my R1200GS, but I use a Battery Tender or Schumacher on my car battery. Hope this helps. Dec 21, 2013

A shopper asked: Stupid question but does this charger have to be plugged into a wall outlet to work? Dec 4, 2013
Answer this · Send to friends Good question? Yes (0) No (0)
Paul O: I read the product description and it doesen't specify the power source.

I presently have one hooked up to my motorcycle and Yes, it needs to be pluged into a 110v receptacle.

As for it being a stupid question, I believe that the only stupid question is the one you have and don't ask.

A shopper asked: I have an Optimate 4 charger. Can I use it on my 2011 R1200RT accessory outlet. Is there a certain procedure I have to follow? Gary Sep 6, 2013
Answer this · Send to friends Good question? Yes (0) No (0)
Diego B: Yes. The procedure is, you need to change the system to CAN BUS first, you do this crossing the red and black batery conector.. Lights will blink 5 times faster, 5 times slower and 2 times faster. After this you change the cables and put the BMW type for the CANBus and the system will start cheking everything.
The product comes with a manual where all of this is explain. hope helps.

Alp B: You should be able to. By default this unit comes set-up to charge bmw canbus systems. You simply plug it at the accessory socket. The unit runs some tests and automatically start charging. You don't even have to put your key in the ignition. Sep 16, 2013

A shopper asked: I was told that the CANbus on the 2014 BMW R1200GS Adventure (water cooled) has been rewired and 'old style' charger could not be used and might fry the bus. The OptiMate 4 worked on my 2011 Adventure, can I safely use it on the 2014? Jun 1, 2014

Greg T: This system worked for my 2012 F800R. I suggest you call TecMate to be certain it will work for your 2014 model. This form won't accept a phone number, so go to their website and use the Contact feature. Jun 1, 2014

A shopper asked: Can I use it to charge car battery 60 - 80 Ah? Dec 21, 2013
Answer this · Send to friends Good question? Yes (0) No (1)
Joseph S: The Optimate 4 is intended for batteries up to 50 Ah, so if you have
a 60 - 80 Ah battery you may want to go with the Optimate 5.
Having said that, unless the battery is in horrible discharge, the Optimate4
would still work at maintaining the battery, charging would take a lot
longer. Its always safer to go the next step up if there are doubts.

David H: I don't see any problem with that. The charger tops out at .8 amps so it may take a few days if the battery is in bad shape. Slow charging is better for the battery than a fast charge. Make sure that charger is in the "standard" mode.

disclaimer: This is solely my opinion. I am not an electrical engineer or an employee of Techmate.
