TecMate OptiMate 4 Dual Program Battery Charger for BMW CANbus 4.7 5 51 51
Best charger I've ever had. Brought my BMW battery back from the dead. I tried with another charger several times, but this one did the trick. I ride, plug it in, and let it stay on. A little pricey, but worth it since a new battery was twice as much. Switching from CANBUS to normal is super easy. Highly recommend. October 5, 2015
exemplary product Truly a great and convenient product....easy to set up and great in particular for newer BMW's with the Canbus system.Added bonus is that it is half the price of the BMW unit.Longevity still to be determined. September 21, 2015
It Works! Post review of the documentation and verifying the programming, the OptiMate has provided reliable charging. I really appreciate being able to use the powerlet accessory socket to charge the bike. All things considered, it’s not a big deal to add a SAE pigtail to the battery though. I gather there are a short list of CANBUS compatible chargers. The OptiMate seems to have a good reputation and I would say is a good option to consider. June 29, 2015
Works great at a great price I'm completely happy with this charger. It works perfectly plugged into the powerlet jack on my R1200RT and costs way less than the BMW charger. May 26, 2015
Good choice for slow charge I first used this on a nearly 100% dead sealed battery. I plugged it into a power lead that I already had installed on my bike and it worked well. This is a low amperage charger so it took nearly 2 days to charge to full. I would have given it 5 stars, but the indicator lights are a bit confusing, so for the first several hours I wasn't sure if it was charging or not. They could have designed this better, but would probably mean adding a few more lights and increasing the cost. July 8, 2015
Super convenient charger for bikes with a CANbus system This charger will do it all. Once you read manual you will easily be able to decipher what the different lights mean, and see at a glance what the charger and battery are doing. The CANbus mode of operation is very convenient to just plug into your bike with no dangling charging cable hanging from your battery. I'm comfortable using this charger in CANbus mode with my Lithium battery as voltage is restricted. Conventional mode great for lead acid batteries where peak voltage can be higher. Build quality and connectors seems very high. Worth the money as it may prolong your battery life, and save you money in the long run. April 20, 2015
Must have for BMW bikes with CANbus. Very easy and intuitive to use. Plug and play. My BMW owners manual suggests putting your battery on a charger if the bike sits for two weeks or longer. Also, I love Revzilla's customer service and product follow up. Perfect compatibility with my 2015 RnineT. March 9, 2015
CanBus Charging I was looking for a charger that would work with my CanBus system and after looking into BMW chargers that were over the top on price I found this little gem that works out perfectly. April 9, 2015

Answer this · Send to friends Good question? Yes (1) No (0)
Barry V: Hi, Phillip,
This charger can be used in two different modes. Mine was already set for the CANbus mode upon arrival. It is fairly simple to switch modes, the instructions are included with the charger, and the lights on the unit will tell you if the charger is operating properly.
I am pleased with this charger. It allows me to charge the battery through the CANbus on my R1200GS at the factory socket.
Hope this helps.

Alp B: I am not familiar with F800GT.
I used the charger on my R1200GS and it needed the CANbus version of the charger.
If your manual does not describe CANbus mode then most probably your charger is the standard version and will not work with a CANbus system.
Manual for CANbus version has detailed description of CANbus operation.

Muhammad H: Dear Philip,
I'm not exactly sure if your bike is fitted with the din plug socket. If you have it, you can use the directly into the plug n play. If not, u have to use the alligator clips direct to your batt and follow their simple instructions provided.

Diego B: If you have a Power socket will work. CANbus is the systems that manage the BMW computer, that let them know a diagnostic of your motorcycle. Op 4 is design to not cook this system when you connect it to the Power Socket. Oct 16, 2013

A shopper asked: Can I charge 60-80 Ah car battery with this charger? Dec 21, 2013
Answer this · Send to friends Good question? Yes (0) No (0)
Ira B: The instructions state that the charger is for 3Ah to 50Ah. The maximum output current is stated to be 0.8A.

The charger has a 48 hour charge safety limit. If you are using it for a 'severely discharged automobile battery' you may need to reset the charger (as per the instructions)

So I think the answer is yes.

George K: Yes you can charge your car 60-80 Ah battery! You can charge boats, sailboats R.V.'s lawn tractors and any kind of battery! This is the best charger you can get! It doesn't weigh 15 lbs like most chargers. Its portable! I will attach mine to a piece of wood and hang it from a nail on the wall. If I need to take it with I can put it in the BMW tank bag of glove compartment. Dec 22, 2013

Sergiu S: The cover of the instructions manual says 3-50 Ah within 48 hours, up to 70Ah for long term maintenance. I would try an actual car battery charger as it may take a lesser time. Best is to submit your question to Tecmate. Dec 21, 2013

Barry V: Optimate recommends this charger for batteries up to 50ah. Might be pushing it to go any higher. It works well on my R1200GS, but I use a Battery Tender or Schumacher on my car battery. Hope this helps. Dec 21, 2013

A shopper asked: Stupid question but does this charger have to be plugged into a wall outlet to work? Dec 4, 2013
Answer this · Send to friends Good question? Yes (0) No (0)
Paul O: I read the product description and it doesen't specify the power source.

I presently have one hooked up to my motorcycle and Yes, it needs to be pluged into a 110v receptacle.

As for it being a stupid question, I believe that the only stupid question is the one you have and don't ask.

A shopper asked: I have an Optimate 4 charger. Can I use it on my 2011 R1200RT accessory outlet. Is there a certain procedure I have to follow? Gary Sep 6, 2013
Answer this · Send to friends Good question? Yes (0) No (0)
Diego B: Yes. The procedure is, you need to change the system to CAN BUS first, you do this crossing the red and black batery conector.. Lights will blink 5 times faster, 5 times slower and 2 times faster. After this you change the cables and put the BMW type for the CANBus and the system will start cheking everything.
The product comes with a manual where all of this is explain. hope helps.

Alp B: You should be able to. By default this unit comes set-up to charge bmw canbus systems. You simply plug it at the accessory socket. The unit runs some tests and automatically start charging. You don't even have to put your key in the ignition. Sep 16, 2013

A shopper asked: Can it take in 220V input? Jun 28, 2015
Answer this · Send to friends Good question? Yes (0) No (0)
Barry V: I don't really know. Here in America, all of our household electrical outlets are 120 volts.
Perhaps Tecmate manufactures one for the European markets that inputs 220. I would contact the manufacturer to find out.
Sorry I couldn't be more help.

A shopper asked: I was told that the CANbus on the 2014 BMW R1200GS Adventure (water cooled) has been rewired and 'old style' charger could not be used and might fry the bus. The OptiMate 4 worked on my 2011 Adventure, can I safely use it on the 2014? Jun 1, 2014

Greg T: This system worked for my 2012 F800R. I suggest you call TecMate to be certain it will work for your 2014 model. This form won't accept a phone number, so go to their website and use the Contact feature. Jun 1, 2014

A shopper asked: Can I use it to charge car battery 60 - 80 Ah? Dec 21, 2013
Answer this · Send to friends Good question? Yes (0) No (1)
Joseph S: The Optimate 4 is intended for batteries up to 50 Ah, so if you have
a 60 - 80 Ah battery you may want to go with the Optimate 5.
Having said that, unless the battery is in horrible discharge, the Optimate4
would still work at maintaining the battery, charging would take a lot
longer. Its always safer to go the next step up if there are doubts.

David H: I don't see any problem with that. The charger tops out at .8 amps so it may take a few days if the battery is in bad shape. Slow charging is better for the battery than a fast charge. Make sure that charger is in the "standard" mode.

disclaimer: This is solely my opinion. I am not an electrical engineer or an employee of Techmate.
