Excellent helmet, Great protection.
Raced with Shoei X-12 for 2 years till major crash. Sent into Shoei for evaluation and the said it was toast. The protection of the helmet is out-standing. Fit was overall a little tight (medium), but broke in over time. The ventilation was a little on the short side and the helmet is subject to fogging, beware if you race in the rain. Visibility is adequate, but not up to AGV Corsa which has a little more visibility when in the head down position. Buffeting at high speed is adequate, but tends to lift slightly. The protection of the Shoei X-12 is outstanding and their customer service is excellent. Yes it is an excellent helmet and would recommend
it.

Nice helmet, but not made for street use
This is a really nice helmet, but it's a racing helmet and really doesn't work well on the street. Let's go through some things:

1) It fogs up really easily -- unless you're going 80+ mph.
2) The ventilation is not very good -- unless you're going 80+ mph.
3) Fit is true in terms of head diameter, cheekpads are on the tight (too large) side.
4) Weight is average
5) Snell 2010 rating = softer helmet which will increase your chances of surviving a nasty crash.
6) Airflow doesn't work unless you're in an aggressive, leant-over riding position. Naked bikes, sport tourers, and dual sport riders don't buy this helmet.
7) Whistles a lot more than my old Arai Profile.

I'm sure this is great as a racing helmet, it just doesn't work very well for street use.

matte black X12; 2012 ZX10r
For a race fit, I will always stay with Shoei. It vents nicely, stability is rock solid and the fit is unparralled. This helmet is an extension of your head. I wish the visor was as thick as my Speed R but that is really nitpicking. This helmet is the biz. I've read complaints about the venting and while you won't feel gushing air like a Corsair or Bell Star, whatever Shoei has done to make the air circulate and cool, works. When it was hot this past summer in the humid Atlanta heat of 90+, my head NEVER was hot or uncomfortable. Quietest race helmet that actually keeps your head cool dispels the notion that an airy race helmet has to be a loud helmet. Less is more and this X12 delivers the goods so that you don't even notice you have it on. Not flashy like the SR1, and on par with the Corsair but priced %20% cheaper and a with a superior profile IMO. It simply get the job done.

A light no-frills helmet that just works.
So after trying on enough Shoei helmets to figure out I was a medium I decided to give the X-12 a go. From previous helmets that I've worn, all lower priced "budget-ish" helmets, I can confidently provide a few points where the X-12 really excels over the others.

PROS:
-Way lighter than I expected and less neck fatigue at higher speeds from less wind drag. Also checking behind me is way easier at all speeds as some of my older helmets really gave me a head check at higher speeds on the highway when looking before changing lanes.
-Field of view is way better for aggressive sport riding. I can't tell you how many times I've had to readjust my previous helmets upward to see better in an aggressive position. This helmet is made to be leaning forwards. I pretty much can't see the top part of the visor opening, which gives me a nice view of the sky. It's not so high though that I can't see the speedo nicely while driving in the city.
-Airflow is really good during hot days, and the visor vent works really well at keeping the visor defogged at speed.
-Helmet looks REALLY good. I went with simple black because I'm a simple guy. Spoiler looks cool, and the lines are really appealing

CONS:
-Visor fogs up pretty much instantly at a stop light. I always have to pop the visor (although it doesn't bother me) because I don't have a pinlock installed.
-Wind noise is pretty bad. Louder than some of the old helmets I had, but to it's credit when all the vents are shut it's not terrible. I usually ride with all the vents open, so it's kind of a rock concert inside the shell once I hit 60mph.
-It's pretty expensive, but again, if you can shell it I'd say it's totally worth it.

All in all I had some money to blow on a new helmet so I went with the X-12. I'm personally extremely satisfied with my purchase and if given the opportunity again I'd make the same choice.

Nice fit and style, but visor does not seem to seal well to the helmet and it makes a lot of wind noise, even when in the locked position.

Shoei X-12 for $399 can't be beat!
This helmet has a great fit-and-finish. I have been riding in a Shoei Qwest (Size XS) for about 3 years now. This helmet has been wonderful! Great visibility, air flow, and durability for track and street riding. The X-12 continued to impress me with Shoei products. I have not yet ridden in it so I can't rate Air Flow or Protection (hopefully don't ever have to rate Protection..) but this helmet is wonderful. The 5 shell sizes really caters to a good helmet fit. I was skeptical going up from an XS to S, even staying with the same brand, but the X-12 fits well based on the sizing chart. If you're thinking Arai vs Shoei and have an intermediate oval to long oval head, you should seriously consider Shoei since they are cheaper than the comparable Arai each time.

Pretty much perfect!!!
I bought a shoei x12 because i wanted the best track helmet money could buy and im positive i got it. I take a size L and its a snug, firm fit without being over tight, and the linings are super comfortable. The field of vision is amazing, i can see pretty much everything that i can see without a helmet on.

The weight is also really good, not too heavy but not light either which i think is a testament to the quality and durability. I also was told by the lads where i bought it that Shoei wind tunnel test them to 300kmh. The x12 is a little bit louder than my GT-Air as far as wind noise goes, but in my opinion thats a part of the thrill of going fast is hearing that wind screaming by your head. The ventilation is also pretty good, not as good as some but it will still keep your head at a good temp and your visor fog free.

I was a little bit spooked by the price tag at first, but after using one i believe they are worth every cent, every time i ride im completely confident my head has the best of the best protection on the market.

Overall I honestly can't speak highly enough about the x12. If you have the coin, get one....

First time owning and riding a motorcycle. I did a lot of research regarding different helmet manufacturers and even went into a local shop to ask for advice and be fitted for helmets. Shoei's tend to fit my head better than Arai's. The general consensus is that they have much less buffeting than most other manufacturers. I also heard about Schuberth, but I don't know how they fit since there's not a shop that sells them locally. I almost got a Qwest, but for 400 it seems like a good deal.

Kevin K on Nov 30, 2015
Does this model have a flip down sun visor?
A shopper on Aug 5, 2016
BEST ANSWER: I'm guessing you mean an interior visor. No, it does not. I use a Gold Spectra shield, and it handles even the most direct sunlight. The one isssue is they are polarized, and if you wear polarized sunglasses, they will have a criss cross pattern in your vision.
Hope that helps
Darren
Is this helmet Snell and DOT approved?
A shopper on Jan 21, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Yes - I just looked on the back, its both (one sticker says DOT / Snell Approved)
Which helmet has the most ventilation, X-12 or RF 1200? Hot as heck in Southern California and cracking my visor on the freeway isn't the best idea with rocks, bugs, and other stuff hitting you at 80mph.

Rob
2015 BMW S1000RR
Rob K on Jul 10, 2015
BEST ANSWER: Hey Rob, I have a owned the X12 for over a year. I have not tried the Rf1200. I lived in California prior to moving to south Texas where it is way hotter than SoCal. The X12 is definitely well ventilated and the air flow is pretty good in a standard uprightish seating position. Even in Texas it works well. Depending on how tall you are, the 1000RR is probably more in a tuck position for you. I have a 1000RR as a second bike and I have the impression that the airflow isn't as good desite clams it is a race bred helmet. I definitely recommend the X12 as a bottom line.
Does the X12 have ear cutouts suitable for a Sena kit? Or should I look into the RF1200 for usage with the Sena?
A shopper on Jun 5, 2015
BEST ANSWER: Yes it does have ear cut outs, but if i had to do over i would buy the RF 1200. The X12 is not as great as my old X11. Plus if u do not plan on alot of racing the X12 is really not needed. Hope this helps and ask anything else that you have concerns about.
My new X-12 seems to fog up more than other helmets I've worn. What is the best solution for this - anti-fog visors, or some sort of item that can be applied to the standard visor?
corey p on Dec 28, 2015
BEST ANSWER: I have found RainX anti-fog to work well for fogging in warm temps - to high 20s - after that you see nothing happing and then in a few seconds the entire visor freezes over and you can't see much at all. I took the breath guard out of my old helmet, it was a 1/2" or so deeper so it covers more of my nose/face, that helped a little. You have to keep the air you exhale from getting up to the visor; if you look through some of the snowmobile gear you can see different ways they try a fix this problem. I have not tried many of them - the one I did was a mask-neck gator that you had to put on before the helmet - worked ok but a pain to use. The 'breath box' in snowmobile gear looks promising but I have not talked to anyone that uses one.
Hi I'm torn here, not sure weather to get the X-12 or the new RF1200, price is not really a concern my concerns are 2 fold.
1: air flow, which has better air flow? I'm a sport bike rider most times I'm in the tuck, when not in the tuck i usually have the visor open(slower speeds.

2, shell sizes, I'm a XS, 21 inches exactly. so the more shell sizes the better as if there are only a few(2-3 shell sizes), in the XS size i look like a bobble head.

Currently I"m using the Nexx carbon XR1.R, nice helmet but i kinda of have that bobble head look with the helmet looking disproportionate with my body even with full gear.

Thanks!
Isaac B on Oct 28, 2013
BEST ANSWER: I have no personal experience with the RF 1200. That said I have plenty of time with the X-12. I've had two and my wife has had three. It is a racing helmet and designed to be comfortable at higher speeds. Its fit is tight and it doesn't move no matter how strong the wind blast. You can turn your head all the way to the side at 80 with the shield half open and there is no drag and the helmet and the shield will not move one bit. There is also zero lift at speed. The chin strap will never attempt to strangle you. I think the airflow is great, but again I've not worn an RF 1200.
You asked about shell sizing. My wife wears a XS and looks fine to me. No bubble head here. But beware the standard cheek pads in the XS are 35mm thick. These are so tight that she has to struggle to get the helmet on and off and they push her face into a pucker. She much prefers 31mm pads.
The X-12 comes with a maintenance kit that includes some water repellent for the visor. Does this need to be applied on day 1, or is it applied at the factory and this is just for re-applying?
corey p on Dec 28, 2015
BEST ANSWER: I haven't personally applied mine to it yet, however I have heard that yes it should be applied on day one.
are all cheekpads on the x-12 35mm? I'm choosing between XS and S, not sure which one to get.

I bought XS Bell RS-1 and it was fairly hard to put on, my eyes widen - almost like the liners are pulling it away from each other when it is worn.
Charles Gabriel C on Dec 28, 2013
BEST ANSWER: The X-12 is a racing helmet and meant to fit tightly. That said there is much adjustability in changing cheek pads. My wife likes the fit of an XS, but only after swapping the stock 35MM pads for 31s. She can barely even get the helmet on with the 35s. I wear a size L on the other hand and am happy with the stock 35MM pads in it.
I currently wear a Shoei RF1100 and the fit for my head shape is perfect(XXL).I would like to upgrade to an X12.Can I expect roughly the same fit.
A shopper on Jun 1, 2012
BEST ANSWER: Hi,

I have owned both an RF1100 (past) and X-12 (current). Both were size Medium and both fit my head similarly. I found that there was more room between the chin bar and my nose/face with the RF1100 -- this could be due to the shape of the helmet or the way the X-12 sits on my head.
