Shoei RF-1200 Beacon Helmet

Combining visibility and style, the Shoei RF 1200 Beacon Helmet is like a light out of the darkness. The Shoei RF 1200 represents years of development and evolution of the Shoei RF Helmet series, distilled into one of the most advanced sport helmets available. The RF1200 has evolved through both wind tunnel testing and on-track rider feedback into a helmet that is light-weight, quiet and most of all extremely safe.

Slim And Light Weight Design

One of the most important features of a quality helmet is that you hardly know it’s there protecting your head. Shoei has reduced the weight of the RF-1200 by using a slimmer design and building a distinct line into the side of the helmet that also serves as an accent. As a result, the new Shoei RF-1200 is lighter than any other Snell certified helmet in the current Shoei lineup.

Shell Construction

The new slim design of the Shoei RF-1200, with its distinct accent cut line, widens the bottom of the helmet to help ease the process of putting the helmet on or taking it off. Further advancing the comfort of the AIM+ shell is the industry leading four shell sizes that the Shoei RF-1200 comes in. The impact-absorbing dual liner consists of two layers incorporating different densities, helping to effectively balance the potential impact applied to the more rigid shell.

Through advancements in the aerodynamic shape, improved interior linings and a new and improved shield system the rider will experience a very quiet and comfortable riding experience. The interior of the RF-1200 has achieved a balance of a comfortably soft fit and a firm, stable hold. The new design of the cheek pads also improves the motion of the neck, thus helping the rider to check traffic behind him/her for example.

Shield System

The new CWR-1 Pinlock shield features ribs on top and bottom of the shield to improve rigidity and eliminate bending of the shield caused by wind pressure or the opening and closing of the shield. Independent beading in the top and sides of the helmet help to keep the seal of the shield tight and eliminate any excess air. In addition to the CWR-1 shield, Shoei has developed a new base plate for the RF-1200. The Quick-Release Self-Adjusting base plate is spring-loaded and pulls the shield back onto the helmet, sealing it tightly against wind and rain. The addition of a new five-stage rotating dial allows for fine tuning of the base place for easy shield adjustments.

A large lower three position vent, three upper air vent intakes and four uniquely positioned upper exhaust outlet vents combine with the Dual Density EPS liner to allow cooling air to travel unrestricted through tunnels created in the EPS liner.

It has lots of air flow through the helmet... Awesome helmet!.. This is my 2nd Shoei helmet... These helmets are little pricey but worth it.. the fit and finish are great and it definitely lets a lot of air flow through the helmet to keep you cool!... September 7, 2014
Darth Maul Sum's it up Short and sweet. Looks super cool, really light, feels safe and secure, vents great, pinlock is great, and did i mention its super cool? I got this helmet because i wanted something Snell and Dot certified that also had those emergency tabs. This helmet has been everything and more than i asked of it. The name sounds like Bacon..awesome. You look Darth Maul ish..awesome. I really recommend this, come on, join the dark side. I just hope no one named Skywalker cuts me in half with a light saber. A bit pricey, but you get what you pay for. My RF1200 has great fit and finish, along with a very-wide viewing window. Noise in the helmet is very quiet, except with the chin-vent fully open, which causes a fairly loud, low rumble. When all vents are closed and the face shield is snapped fully shut, it is _very_ queit. On a hot day, the chin-vent noise is worth it, as the vent really increases the airflow over the face and forhead. Overall the ventilation is very good, probably the best you can get in a full-face helmet. Once underway, if all of the top/front vents are open, the rear vent will pull a decent amount of air across the top of the head. I haven't installed the Pin-Lock yet, as it's summer but I plan on using it once the weather gets cool. It's a nice feature to have from what I've read, and based on the reviews I'm sure it will do the job. This is the lightest helmet I've ever owned, and handles the wind quite well. There is a bit of a snap when head-checking once I rotate my head past 90 degrees. It may just be the way my fairings push the wind, I'm not sure. Side-to-side head turns do not cause any noticiable pull. The lining is comfortable, and despite being very snug, it is easy to put glasses on and off, and surprisingly it doesn't want to pull my ear-buds out when putting the helmet on. Visibility is great on my flourescent yellow Beacon. All in all, this is a great helmet, although it's a bit pricey. Thanks to the Revzilla staff in Philly, who helped me try on about 20 helmets before settling on this one, you guys are the best! July 7, 2014
Great helmet, with minor issues I bought this helmet to replace my aging scorpion helmet I got when I first started riding. I wanted something a little more visible, quieter, and more comfortable. While this helmet is lighter, and more comfortable, its venting is its best feature. There are vents that run the full length of the top of the helmet that draw away hot air and flow cool air through, it feels fantastic on cold days. On the negative, it is not much quieter then my scorpion. Wind noise is very noticeable, and on bikes with a short windscreen, it tends to develop a whistle. This was only on bikes with short windscreens that "dump" air in your face and head. It also fogs up sunglasses easily if you wear them under the helmet. My only wishes for this helmet would have been better noise proofing, and a drop down sun shield, or the option to buy it with a smoke visor as standard, instead of as an accessory. This is already an expensive helmet, and having to drop an additional $75 for a smoked visor stings a little. July 7, 2014
Noisy for sure The only issue I have with this helmet is that of the tremendous wind noise that rushes into the helmet. After decades of riding, I will have to start wearing ear plugs or this noise will make my crazy. If I had it to do over again, I would not make this purchase. June 24, 2014
Fits my head and my needs! Reviewing helmets is tough because it's really a comparison to my last helmet, a Scorpion EXO 900. In this case, I wanted a full-face helmet to replace my modular. I also needed a more oval fit for my football head. I also hoped the Shoei RF1200 would be quieter than my Scorpion. But ultimately, I wanted a Snell approved helmet. The Shoei delivered on all accounts. I was also surprised that the weight difference was so noticeable. I chose the hi-viz yellow Beacon which I'm confident helped a driver see me recently before coming into my lane. I can't review the Pinlock only because it's been warm and my screen isn't prone to fogging. Revzilla provided me some good advice that was helpful before I pulled the trigger. The helmet is expensive, but for me, it's been worth the money. June 16, 2014
Great helmet As a previous owner of a RF-1000 I knew what to expect. It's not cheap, but it's a great fitting helmet for me. Fits true to size, my head measures between S and M, got the S, fits nice and snug as expected. Comfortable, no turbulence even at high speed. June 13, 2014
Great Helmet I’ve been riding since 1983 and now ride an FJR1300. This is the best helmet I have owned. I chose it over other helmets with an internal sun visor because it meets the Snell standard but I miss an internal sun visor. I ride into the sun both ways on my commute so I had to buy the dark smoke shield. I ride with my windshield in the lowest position so wind hits me about neck level giving good ventilation flow through the helmet. This helmet has the best ventilation air flow of any helmet I have owned and it stays comfortable even in 100 degree temperatures. Other helmets I have owned created a lot of head buffeting when turning my head sideways. The air flow on the RF-1200 is smooth with my head turned sideways and there is no buffeting making for a much more comfortable ride when seeing the sights. This helmet is also less susceptible to buffeting when hit by side winds. Other helmets I have owned created a hotspot on my forehead. After a four hour ride with one short stop for gas this helmet did not create any hotspots. I bought the yellow Beacon to make myself more noticeable to drivers. I notice quite a few more long looks than I had with my hi-viz jacket and a black helmet so it appears to make me more noticeable to drivers. The helmet is quieter than other helmets I have owned although other reviews I have read say it is not as quiet as expected. It is noticeably quieter when the vents are closed than when open. I wear ear plugs when riding and the noise is not objectionable with vents open or closed. The Beacon has one downside. The paint has a matte finish which is easily marred as stated in the manual. Be careful not to rub the helmet on other surfaces. It is best to get the helmet on and adjusted with gloves off to avoid smudges. Bugs clean off well with a wet cloth but smudges from rubbing on other surfaces may not clean completely off. May 27, 2014

Ty D: I wanted an arai because I love their history of safety and i like the plush interior. But I couldn't find an arai that properly and comfortably fit my head. I tried schuberth and shoei. Shoei had the best feel. Shoei simply fit my head the best. I got the hi viz yellow because I'm new to riding and I want to be as safe and visible as I can be. Shoei has great reviews and is usually mentioned right along with arai when discussing premium helmets. I hope I made I good choice. Jul 11, 2014

L Y: New design for Shoei. I thought about fitment, the size of the shield and the way it fits. The RF-1200 is a little louder than the RF-1100. I do like the recessed areas to place my speakers for my bluetooth though. Apr 3, 2014

"" ": Hey Don,
I measured right around 23 inches as well and went with a Medium. I'm actually lucky enough to work close to Revzilla, so I tried on a ton of helmets until I chose this one. The guys that work there are unbelievably knowledgable and they said most people ride with helmets too large for their heads. Funny thing is I've had four Shoei race helmets in my life and all of them were Larges. Switching to the Medium made me realize how much better they work when they seal off against your face and ears, much quieter when they fit as well. BTW- You're going to love the pinlock shield.

Kevin H: I went the size smaller, but have not used it on the road yet....bit cold right now in Michigan. I did wear it around the house for more than a couple of hours though. Seems like it will be fine.

Renting a bike in Las Vegas next week, so the true test will be then, wearing it all day

Mike Z: Get the medium. a tad tight, but will loosen up. best to have a tight helmet. It is a great helmet. Check out sizing by Jay Leno on you tube. Much better to have tight than loose. Mar 8, 2014

Nicholas A: Sorry for the delay question went into junk email. I actually just bought the SMH 10R and will be installing today. On previous Shoei helmets I installed Cardo systems with no problem. I am assuming that even with the cutouts this will not be a problem.

Sorry for the delayed response

Michael G: I was also unsure about the color so I scoped it out at a local shop. In person it looks more orange than I expected, especially when compared to the reds used in other helmets. It looks cool but I'm probably going to end up going with something that better matches the rest of my gear. Nov 5, 2013
