What's this?

Shoei RF-1200 Beacon Helmet

Combining visibility and style, the Shoei RF 1200 Beacon Helmet is like a light out of the darkness. The pinnacle of perfection, the RF-1200 has been designed, from its inception, to be an industry leader in comfort, performance and protection. The wind tunnel tested shell has been optimized to provide a compact and aerodynamic shape, reducing wind-noise, buffeting and weight. Shoei has not only designed the RF-1200 to be one of the most comfortable helmets on the market, but also one of the safest, meeting both DOT and SNELL M2010 safety standards.

Whether you are a track day enthusiast or cross-country cruiser, the RF-1200 will allow you to ride with confidence, freeing you to concentrate on the road and most importantly....enjoy the ride.

Slim And Light Weight Design

One of the most important features of a quality helmet is that you hardly know it’s there protecting your head. Shoei has reduced the weight of the RF-1200 by using a slimmer design and building a distinct line into the side of the helmet that also serves as an accent. As a result, the new Shoei RF-1200 is lighter than any other Snell certified helmet in the current Shoei lineup.

Shell Construction

The new slim design of the Shoei RF-1200, with its distinct accent cut line, widens the bottom of the helmet to help ease the process of putting the helmet on or taking it off. Further advancing the comfort of the AIM+ shell is the industry leading four shell sizes that the Shoei RF-1200 comes in. The impact-absorbing dual liner consists of two layers incorporating different densities, helping to effectively balance the potential impact applied to the more rigid shell.

Quietness

Through advancements in the aerodynamic shape, improved interior linings and a new and improved shield system the rider will experience a very quiet and comfortable riding experience. The interior of the RF-1200 has achieved a balance of a comfortably soft fit and a firm, stable hold. The new design of the cheek pads also improves the motion of the neck, thus helping the rider to check traffic behind him/her for example.

Shield System

The new CWR-1 Pinlock shield features ribs on top and bottom of the shield to improve rigidity and eliminate bending of the shield caused by wind pressure or the opening and closing of the shield. Independent beading in the top and sides of the helmet help to keep the seal of the shield tight and eliminate any excess air. In addition to the CWR-1 shield, Shoei has developed a new base plate for the RF-1200. The Quick-Release Self-Adjusting base plate is spring-loaded and pulls the shield back onto the helmet, sealing it tightly against wind and rain. The addition of a new five-stage rotating dial allows for fine tuning of the base place for easy shield adjustments.

Ventilation

A large lower three position vent, three upper air vent intakes and four uniquely positioned upper exhaust outlet vents combine with the Dual Density EPS liner to allow cooling air to travel unrestricted through tunnels created in the EPS liner.

Features:

 • Four shell sizes
 • Dual density EPS liner
 • Superior ventilation
 • 3D Max-Dry System II Liner
 • E.Q.R.S. (Emergency Quick-Release System) CWR-1 Shield System
 • Neatly secure chin strap
 • Includes Pinlock pins and lens insert
 • Includes breath guard and chin curtain
 • Snell M2010 and DOT Certified

Note: Due to manufacturer restrictions, the RF-1200 Beacon and other Shoei products can only be shipped to addresses within the United States.

awesome helmet
This is a great helmet! It's light, quiet, comfortable, and looks awesome. The anti-fog system works well. My sunglasses fog up though, so I'm getting the tinted visor. The pinlock does create halo at night though. The manual says to take it off at night, which is impractical. I might just run without the pinlock.

In my previous (very old) HJC helmet, my speakers would squelch at around 80 mph. I also had to turn it all the way up to hear it. With RF-1200, I hit 100 mph and the music still played (and could be heard). I also set the volume to one click below max, because max is too loud.

My one gripe:
The bluetooth install was quite a bit harder than I expected. I have the Sena SMH10R, and the speakers were too big for the cavity in the helmet. I ended up using a razor to shave off nearly all of the plastic on the speakers, and I had to put some foam tape in the cavity to make contact with the speaker. I also had to cut away the foam that fills the cavity from the ear lining, as it is not made to be removed.

OrangeRed blaze
I bought this helmet to replace my RF-1200 because the bold stripes are visually striking. The pictures don't do it justice in that in moderate-bright light, the red is more of a orange-red-blaze. This creates great visibility and actual road safety while looking intimidating. However, within a week I saw 4 other riders with the same helmet! If you're looking to be unique, don't buy the ZLA choice, but if you don't care, then this is a great color scheme.

The RF-1200 is a great helmet and saved my noggin from a run in with the ground. Quiet and smooth on the freeway, 10/10 would buy again. Not cheap, but protecting your brain is #1 when it comes to being a human.

Darth Maul Sum's it up
Short and sweet. Looks super cool, really light, feels safe and secure, vents great, pinlock is great, and did i mention its super cool? I got this helmet because i wanted something Snell and Dot certified that also had those emergency tabs. This helmet has been everything and more than i asked of it. The name sounds like Bacon..awesome. You look Darth Maul ish..awesome. I really recommend this, come on, join the dark side. I just hope no one named Skywalker cuts me in half with a light saber.

As Advertised
This helmet is extremely quiet and comfortable. I bought the helmet based on Revzillas review and found the review to be spot on. I rode in high winds and buffeting was almost non existent. The shield seal is excellent and the adjustment to tighten the seal are easy to use. The finish is top shelf. I bought the yellow HI Viz and I definitely am seen by motorists. Great helmet price is a little steep but you get what you pay for.

A bit pricey, but you get what you pay for.
My RF1200 has great fit and finish, along with a very-wide viewing window. Noise in the helmet is very quiet, except with the chin-vent fully open, which causes a fairly loud, low rumble. When all vents are closed and the face shield is snapped fully shut, it is _very_ queit. On a hot day, the chin-vent noise is worth it, as the vent really increases the airflow over the face and forhead.

Overall the ventilation is very good, probably the best you can get in a full-face helmet. Once underway, if all of the top/front vents are open, the rear vent will pull a decent amount of air across the top of the head.

I haven't installed the Pin-Lock yet, as it's summer but I plan on using it once the weather gets cool. It's a nice feature to have from what I've read, and based on the reviews I'm sure it will do the job.

This is the lightest helmet I've ever owned, and handles the wind quite well. There is a bit of a snap when head-checking once I rotate my head past 90 degrees. It may just be the way my fairings push the wind, I'm not sure. Side-to-side head turns do not cause any noticiable pull.

The lining is comfortable, and despite being very snug, it is easy to put glasses on and off, and surprisingly it doesn't want to pull my ear-buds out when putting the helmet on.

Visibility is great on my flourescent yellow Beacon.

All in all, this is a great helmet, although it's a bit pricey.

Thanks to the Revzilla staff in Philly, who helped me try on about 20 helmets before settling on this one, you guys are the best!

The force is strong in this one
Join the Dark Side and buy this awesome helmet. Just received it today and this will be my first review of it prior to riding with it. This will be on looks, comfort and first impressions.
Out of the box it looks impressive. Comes with a chin curtain to reduce wind as well as a breath guard to reduce fogging, both are easy to install and remove. A helmet bag is also included. The helmet is extremely light and has a nice comfortable snug fit. I have a narrow face and this fits me very comfortably. The inner lining is soft to the touch. I've tried Icon, and AGV helmets and this material is by far the most comfortable.
The red and black matte version looks amazing. The red is vibrant, almost a hi-vis brightness. I didn't need to read the instructions in order to remove the face shield. Took me less than five seconds on each side to remove it and the same time to snap it back in to place. Anthony did a great job explaining the process in the video.
The vents are easy to open and close, and the materials and quality are top notch. Being both DOT and Snell approved put this helmet at the top of my shopping list.
Once donned, I could almost hear the Dark Side calling me, as it is very Darth Maul-esque. It should be offered with an optional light saber.
If price is deterring you from taking the plunge, ask yourself what is your head worth. For me, I'll spend what I need to for quality and protection and if I get some awesome graphics to boot, even better. I have no doubt that I'll feel safe and well protected wearing this on a ride.
Future reviews to follow once I take this bad boy out on the road and get some miles with it.

Very compact and well designed
I've always invested in top of the line Shoei helmets, so I assumed I would be trading in my x-11 for an x-12 when the time came. The truth is that I've always assumed race helmets were more protective, but the more I researched and filtered out the marketing junk, that didn't seem to be the case. Bob B. (at the Pa. store) spent a ton of time with me comparing various models on their showroom floor and the RF-1200 stacked up really well against helmets running $200-$300 more. I guess you don't always get more for your money, especially if you're using a race helmet on the street. The RF-1200 is lighter, smaller, quieter and it comes standard with a pinlock shield (works perfectly BTW). Functionally, it's hard to overstate how far Shoei have progressed since my x-11 was designed. The RF-1200 has incredible airflow and the field of view is considerably wider. The hi-viz color is great because I can see other motorist double-take when they glance over at me (which is the point). Bottom line: the helmet is a great buy and the guys at Revzilla are great to work with!

Awesome Helmet
Way better than the RPHA 10 which is in my opinion is a great helmet. The rf-1200 feels so much better and I feel a lot safer in it for some reason. I had no fog issues with this helmet at all and that is without the p-lock system. Video and pictures just can’t do this helmet justice. The red does not seem to come out correct in either. The red just pops in real life. I love this helmet. This is defiantly one of the best looking high vis helmets out there. You can still look badass and be seen. Very much recommend. As always thank you Zilla for the free shipping, no sales tax and the Zilla cash I can use towards my next purchase. I saved $45.00 in sales tax and got $25.00 in Zilla cash. You guys rock.

Good Hi-Viz option
Came to this helmet from the Scorpion EXO-1100. I found that helmet to be noisy after a difficult visor replacement.

The visor replacement mechanism on the Shoei is so much better than the Scorpion I had, which means that there is virtually no chance you can damage the side-plate. Also the smooth lines around the ears reduce the wind noise.

The Hi-viz graphics really pop.

Opening the chin vent creates the a defogging airflow pattern that together with the pin-lock system works really well to keep the visor fog free. The chin vent does increase the noise factor though.

Small issues
The chimney vents work well but whistle a little on head-checks on the freeway. The breath-guard is too small for my nose and the snap on the helmet snap can be difficult to use.

Very much worth the upgrade from my old Scorpion. Liking it and it gets noticed on the road.

quiet, lightweight, great looking helmet
I've been an Arai guy for years, but when it was time for a new lid this past fall the features, look, and price of this helmet made me change up.

The things that drove me from Shoei to Arai years ago are less prevalent but still present - the fit is a bit snug for my slightly wider than average noggin, and the ear cutouts are smaller than Arai's are typically and my ears (again larger than your average bear's) tend to get caught and I have to wiggle the helmet around until they settle into the recesses properly. Unlike my old Shoei's however, my ears aren't continually pinched after that and once it's on the helmet actually is very comfortable even when I wear it for hours on end.

The noise level is extremely quiet even with all vents open, and while I suppose there must be quieter ones available I feel this is the best compromise in a helmet I've owned between reducing noise level and weight.

And the thing looks pretty BA too. Just keep in mind this is hi-viz red, not the typical Ducati/Honda red so if you're trying to match your bike, it may not be the perfect color. It's not as bright orange as the fluorescent red on Dainese leathers, for instance, but it's definitely lighter than the pics might suggest. I bought this at the Philly gear boutique and saw it in person before buying so there were no surprises for me - I think it looks awesome.

Have used for one month now. Wanted a high quality helmet that would be quiet. It is very quiet, no need for ear plugs. Very nice finish, hardware and vents work well on 80 plus degree days. Very light and aerodynamic - do not notice any fatigue wearing it even on longer rides. Styling is a subjective thing, but they worked in the high visibility with pleasing graphics. I think it is a good value price to quality.

Was crossed between a shoei and the Icon ghost carbon just for the look, in the end the shoei had more features than just looks and will most likely be more comfortable.

The quality of Shoei cannot be beat, and the RF-1200 is hands down the best bang for your buck, add some killer graphics like the beacon(DARTH MAUL SITH LORD) and you have yourself a winner. The RF-1200 offers quite a few badass graphics, and it was a tough decision between this one and phantasm, but the red and black went better with my color scheme or red white and black so this won, but I'd be happy with either one. Thank you Anthony for the great videos. Truly helped me make the decision

Amazing in all categories! Great ventilation, low wind noise, very light, very reflective in both day and night, and also super cool! Comes with pin lock which helps greatly in humidity. I wanted an arai because I love their history of safety and i like the plush interior. But I couldn't find an arai that properly and comfortably fit my head. I tried schuberth and shoei. Shoei had the best feel. Shoei simply fit my head the best. I got the hi viz yellow because I'm new to riding and I want to be as safe and visible as I can be. Shoei has great reviews and is usually mentioned right along with arai when discussing premium helmets. I hope I made I good choice.

BEST ANSWER: Hey Don,
I measured right around 23 inches as well and went with a Medium. I'm actually lucky enough to work close to Revzilla, so I tried on a ton of helmets until I chose this one. The guys that work there are unbelievably knowledgable and they said most people ride with helmets too large for their heads. Funny thing is I've had four Shoei race helmets in my life and all of them were Larges. Switching to the Medium made me realize how much better they work when they seal off against your face and ears, much quieter when they fit as well. BTW- You're going to love the pinlock shield.
How does this helmet work if you wear glasses?
A shopper on Jun 28, 2015
BEST ANSWER: For me it hasn't been a problem. Getting the earpieces by the cheekpads and over my ears is a bit of a challenge. But if I gently work them around, and then gently pull the helmet in different directions, they fall into place. Once they're in there, they stay put!

Note: my face is kinda round, and I found that the 35mm cheekpads that came with it were too big. Bought the 31mm pads, and the world is groovy. Perfect fit - snug but not uncomfortable.
Is the yellow Beacon more visible than the solid "Brilliant Yellow" RF-1200?
A shopper on Jun 12, 2015
BEST ANSWER: I had similar questions when I was looking into these helmets. I'm fortunate enough to live close to the RevZilla showroom, so I was able to see these up close prior to purchasing one. The real difference is nearly impossible to see in pictures or artificail lights, but as soon as you see them in person you can tell that Hi-Viz is completely different than bright or brilliant yellow. The sales guy even took a couple outside for me to see in direct sun light. Side by side the differences are significant. I'm not exactly a fan of the graphic design on my beacon, but I will say the Hi-Viz makes people take a second look before pulling out on me.
The matte finish looks great but how durable is it compared to a glossy finish? Does it get scuffs/scratches easier?
hawkrider on Jan 4, 2015
BEST ANSWER: I'd have to say it's extremely durable. I've never had a glossy black, but it's awesome. This is a "buy the right size and cheek pads and don't worry about anything else" type of helmet. Everything about this helmet is awesome.
Super comfy!

I really like the look of the red rf-1200 beacon. I wanted to know what is the true color of the red. Is it more like the picture or the video?
A shopper on Oct 31, 2013
BEST ANSWER: I was also unsure about the color so I scoped it out at a local shop. In person it looks more orange than I expected, especially when compared to the reds used in other helmets. It looks cool but I'm probably going to end up going with something that better matches the rest of my gear.
Hi! I measured my head and I'm a 22cm. My question: small or medium with this helmet? Thx!
A shopper on Nov 24, 2014
BEST ANSWER: You must mean 22 inches. I'm 21 3/4" and the small fits me fine.

With the cut out on the sides is it possible to fit the send send smh10 mount between the shell and the EPS?
Thanks stew

BEST ANSWER: Sorry for the delay question went into junk email. I actually just bought the SMH 10R and will be installing today. On previous Shoei helmets I installed Cardo systems with no problem. I am assuming that even with the cutouts this will not be a problem.
