MachineartMoto X-Head DOHC Engine Guard for BMW R1200 / R1200GS
X-Head DOHC covers 80% of the face of the cylinder head to protect not only the bottom initial impact area in a drop, but also the upper part of the cylinder head. Even in a driveway drop, the inertia of a fall may cause a bike to roll briefly onto the face of the cylinder before it settles down on its bottom edge. X-Heads cover more area than OEM and other aftermarket head guards.
X-Head DOHC are molded in a DuPont "SuperTough" nylon selected for its blend of high-impact strength, temperature and UV stabilization. The injection molded shell is designed to give slightly in the event of an impact to prevent breakage. Between it and the cylinder head is a 7mm thick thermoplastic rubber liner that aids in dissipating impact force while preventing hard contact with the cylinder.
Each side mounts via the included 3 stainless steel fasteners coated with Nyloc thread locking compound to assure a tight installation.
If your crash bars have had an impact, check that there is still a minimum of 15mm clearance between the crash bars and the X-Heads.
X-Heads fit with BMW OEM, Adventure Designs crash bar extensions, Touratech, SW Motech, and Hepco Becker crash bars. They do not fit with Z-Tecknik bars. If your bars fit BMW's OEM cylinder guards, they will fit with the X-Heads
Must have item
Having had an R1150R that suffered scratches on one of the cylinder head covers due to a minor kiss with asphalt, these were the first item on my shopping list for my new R1200GS. I considered all other guards available but felt these were the best option for protection and looks. Fitting was easy, just a little effort required because of the thread lock on the bolts, and I am pleased with the result. The instructions provided were clear and easy to follow. Hopefully I will never have to test the true nature of their durability. Highly recommended.

A bit of a tight fit, but following the proper sequence, was all doable. Nice fit, good look. And expect I will only use them as cosmetic enhancements . Note: I spent more time taking off something like 20 side panel screws on the 2012 R1200RT that the part install

Nice looking product
These are very nice looking items and look great on the bike. Beware that they do require a little "massaging" in order to fit, but once you stretch them a little they will go on nicely.

The Machineartmoto cylinder head cover for the BMW DOHC boxers is great.
Installation is very easy if you follow the directions and install the bolts in the correct order. Go out of order and the bolts do not line up easily.
Removing the RT fairing took 10x longer than installing the head covers.

Great Valve Cover Protection
Good sturdy protect to protect BMW valve cover ends on their boxer engine. I rated it lower on installation, as there are three screws for attaching the guard to the engine. The first two are easy. The third is difficult because the product fits so tight over the valve cover....hard to line up the last screw from the engine guard to the corresponding hole in the engine...it's a bit of a stretch to get it to fit. Should have another 16th of an inch or so play to make it easier.

Quality design and stylish
I am very pleased with my MachineartMoto X-Heads. As usual, my RevZilla shopping experience was first rate. The MachineartMoto X-Heads look great, especially on my R1200GS Triple Black. Installation was about 20-25 mins. It would have been less but the tolerances are very tight and it takes a little effort to get the top rear bolt aligned. I rated "performance" and "durability" as excellent even though the bike has never been down. The surface coverage and design gives me a great deal of confidence that they will perform well if required.
