Icon Hooligan 2 Mesh Overpants

Mesh overpant - the idea seems a bit odd at first - until you try them. The Fighter Mesh chassis provides excellent abrasion resistance while allowing complete freedom of movement and incredible ventilation. Integrated mechanical flex zones further increase the mobility and comfort of the pants. Worn over a set of normal pants this outfit provides a great riding experience in warmer weather climates while providing enhanced protection.

Features
  • Icon loose overpant fit pattern
  • Removable knee impact protectors
  • Durable breathable fighter mesh nylon chassis
  • Adjustable waist straps
  • Perforated panels for venting
  • Ribbed flex panels on knees
  • Zippered side pockets for secure storage
  • Ratchet waist closure

Excellent Fit I bought these riding pants for added protection on my commute to work. They fit true to size. I wear a size 34 so I ordered them in a 34. They fit easily over my jeans. I've noticed some other reviewers mention that they don't fit well over your boots but I didn't have that issue. The Ratchet waist closure works really well to keep the pants up and tight around the waist. Ventilation is excellent. The kneepads can be adjusted and you have the option to sit them in one of 3 pockets. I'm not a tall guy (5'4), so I needed to adjust them a little higher than their default placement to get them to fit directly over my knee. My only complaint is that they don't have hip protection as advertised. It even mentions on the tag attached to the pants that hip protection is offered. Other than that, the pants are great. Definitely worth the purchase. March 15, 2013
I have two pairs! Fair protection I was in a crash this summer with these mesh pants on and they saved me from a lot of road rash. The padding was very minimal around the knees but definitely kept me from being seriously damaged. Also since the pants are so comfortable I wear them all the time. Even in the winter with warm clothing underneath. Since it's mesh, it's really easy to pack away into a back when I get to work. They are VERY baggy so if you don't like that look I don't recommend them! December 13, 2012
Pretty Good Overall Only thing that I don't like about it is that the leg zippers do not go high enough. This means that you must remove your boots when putting on or taking these bad boys off. Other than that, they are great. December 5, 2012
Too long, but excellent airflow and flexibility. The only issue I have with these overpants is the length. I'm 5'10" 220lbs and ordered a 38. The knee pads slide into little mesh pockets on the inside of these pants, but on me, they are on my shins. These are also a little too long. I tried to fold up the waste, but the inseam doesn't allow you to go up too high. It makes me feel like I have stubby legs! I read someone else took them to a tailor to have them shortened. I think I might just do that. Even with my Field Armor Shorts, aftermarket shin/knee armor, and Cortech Latigo RR boots, there is a ton of room in these pants. October 8, 2012
A little bit long, but great fit when riding I love these pants, they feel great over regular jeans and the waist size was spot on. I thought they would be hot to wear but they actually keep all of the engine heat from burning you up and in turn, keep you cooler even when sitting still. The knee armour slides down too far since they are made to be long, but it doesnt bother me to slide them up when i sit down on my bike.Overall great purchase, they are very thick and feel like they would protect from a lot of road rash! Better than wearing just jeans, cheaper than leather pants. Being mesh pants, they have VERY good airflow. Making it ideal for anyone riding in 90-110 degree weather on a regular basis. There are other pros of this pant as well: 1.They're comfortable and fairly light 2.Being black, they match just about any riding outfit. 3.They're very reasonably priced and protect you better than not wearing anything. Now, the cons: 1. Don't even try to use this pant in the rain. Excellent ventilation = terrible water protection. 2. They're pretty thin, so I don't think they'd do too well protecting you in the event that you go down at 70+ mph. 3.They feel a lot bigger than they're sized at. All in all, it's what you paid for. It's a street pant, not a track suit. Designed more for everyday riding then high-speed knee-dragging protection. August 23, 2012
Quite Nice!!! These are REALLY nice overpants. Like Anthony says, order your size. I was alittle hesitant; I am a 40 in some pants, and all the way up to a 44 in other brands.. So to be safe I ordered the 44's. Well they are big, and LONG! But I really like them. This will allow me to layer up alittle in the fall/winter and still have room. They are piece of mind when driving down the road at speed that I have basic leg protection. Air flow is excellent, they breathe great and move tons of air through them. I do wish however they would allow over the boot installation. But with all considered, I knew that going in, I have riding shoes for the road anyways, those easy enough to slide on. Boots are for the track. Buy em and enjoy! You will not regret it August 20, 2012
Nice material and quality. Strange fit. These are pretty neat pants but are cut really strange. I am 6’ 1” 210 lbs and typically wear a size 36 pants. The 36 size I ordered fit well in the waist and the length but I had to pull them way up above my belly button to get the knee pads anywhere near my knees. The knee pads are adjustable but they only moved further down I and I needed them higher. The legs are super baggy even over jeans. Also, on the short ride I took in them with shorts underneath I really couldn’t feel any airflow. August 14, 2012

Answer:
It is definitely a trade-off. The Mesh will be a good deal cooler, but the Textile offer better abrasion resistance.

Answer:
I own the mesh pants so I cannot comment directly on how hot the textiles are, however I do own other textile riding pants and you will find that nylon just doesn't breathe or let any air in. I understand the textile pants have some lighter panels for venting, but you will probably sweat a bit in them during really hot weather as textile panels won't flow much, if air through them.

Also depends on where you will wear them - just on the bike or if you plan to be walking around in them a fair bit. From experience, standing and walking around in textile pants on a hot day is terrible. On a bike though, enough air should get through the panels to make it bearable.

Regarding the protection - inevitably, you do sacrifice some protection when choosing mesh over textile, however it really depends on their intended use. If you are just using them for commuting around and wont be hitting anything over 60 most of the time, they should hold up quite well. I trust that ICON doesn't produce rubbish so I feel fine getting around in the mesh pants with shorts underneath at lower speeds.
