GMax GM54S Derk Modular Helmet

The modular design allows the "flip-jaw" to rotate further back on the crown of the helmet. The further rotation of the flip-jaw not only increases the user's line-of-sight when in the raised position, but it also lessens the user's fatigue by maintaining an even distribution of weight across the helmet.

Features:

  • New inner flip tint sun lens
  • Inner flip shield is easily raised of lowered with a lever located on the exterior of the helmet
  • Distortion free clear single lens shield
  • New integrated multi-function red L.E.D rear light
  • Optional rear brake light kit available

  • Lightweight D.O.T approved thermo-plastic alloy shell
  • Excellent shield sealing reduces unwanted air and noise
  • GMAX "D.E.V.S" adjustable "dual exhaust venting system", top, side, and rear venting reduces fogging and sweating by allowing hot air to escape from the mouth area and top of head
  • Adjustable chin vent directs air upward across the inside of the shield to help reduce or eliminate fogging
  • Large eye port for improved range of vision
  • Coolmax comfort liner and cheek pads move the moisture away from your body and the fabric dries quickly. The added performance keeps you dry and comfortable

  • Deluxe ear pockets for better fit and comfort

Absolutely perfect except one thing I absolutely love this helmet. The light helps a lot at night (not so much during the day), and it is obviously really cool looking. It's super comfortable and easy to put on without ruining my hair (big bonus) mostly because of the modular capabilities. Absolutely love it. One thing is that the inside visor fogs up heavily from my breathe and I'm not sure if I'm doing something wrong or there's a mouthpiece I lost somewhere in the packaging. Cracking open the visor a tiny big helps fix the problem but I feel like that shouldn't be a problem in the first place. Also the decal is peeling a tiny bit (not one that can spiral out of control) around just above where the modular screws are. It isn't noticeable unless you're looking closely at it though so no big deal. December 15, 2014
Good bang for the buck I've had this helmet for about 5 months so I can't really speak about long term durability. I bought this helmet for several reasons. One is that it can get painful pulling off and putting on a helmet several times. As I tried on many different helmets, my ears felt like they were being ripped off and were sore for several days. Being a modular helmet, you can flip the front up and get in and out quite easily. No pain. You can flip the front up and carry on a conversation, or just get some much needed fresh air on a hot day. I like having the flip down sun shield. No need to have a tinted shield for the day and clear for night. Adds great versatility. It doesn't operate as smoothly as some of the the others on the market, but still makes life riding west in the afternoon so much more enjoyable. It has a tail light built in with a couple if flashing modes to aid in visibility that can be wirelessly connected to your brake lights with an optional kit. Price was very reasonable for the helmet and all it's features. I got it on sale, but even if it isn't, i still think it's a good price. Fit and comfort... It fit me just right and felt very comfortable right away. It is a bit heavy, but most of my riding is short trips around town or an hour down the road. It does, however, weigh on you with longer trips. I did a trip including Oklahoma, New Mexico, Texas, and Colorado in only a couple days and I was really starting to grow weary of the weight on my head. Also, and I'm not sure if it was the helmet or the result of wearing a balaclava (cold front moved through) and it's stitching, but I started feeling a lot of pressure towards the front center of my head. It became quite painful towards the end of the trip. It's possibly the balaclava, as the stitching is right down the center of the head. However, I have not made that long of a trip with this helmet without the balaclava to know for sure. There is also stitching on the liner in that general location too... It's possible the extra pressure from the balaclava coupled with the helmet made it that much more uncomfortable. It does have decent ventilation, but will fog in colder temps when you aren't moving or moving very slowly. I have worn this helmet in temps from right at freezing to 110° F. It handles it all okay. You definitely want to wear earplugs at highway speeds. You should regardless of the helmet. It does whistle a bit at high speed when you look to the side or if there is a strong side wind. Overall, I'm very pleased with my purchase and I think for the price it can't be beat. I am planning a long, almost cross country ride late spring, so I may update then. December 12, 2014
Nice Helmet, very comfortable. Great value and a very nice helmet. Love the way it fits and the vision is awesome. December 8, 2014
Best Bang for Buck I originally bought this helmet in black for my wife; since she seldom wears a full face I adopted the helmet for myself because of the integrated sun glasses. After having this helmet for a year I'm a huge fan; The integrated sun glasses make life easy in the early or waning hours when the shadows cast across the roadway (I can quickly switch back and forth). The modular face makes it easy to get on and off with my neck gaiter on in the winter time. I've also become a fan of the red warning light in the back; I turn it on in the evenings and almost always in the rain for increased visibility. The helmet is somewhat heavy compared to the more expensive brands, as I assume the road noise is also somewhat more noticeable. I ride with a Scala rider headset which is more than loud enough to drown out the road noise, so that's of no concern for me. There are a huge number of vents on this helmet, so I'm very comfortable in the summer time. I don't typically hang out in the city on the bike for very long, so I imagine it might get hot at the stop lights on the hottest summer days. Inversely, you'll need the Balaclava for winter because it's still somewhat drafty in the winter even with the vents closed; but keep in mind I ride well below freezing. Ultimately I don't think you can beat the bang for the buck; well vented, modular, integrated sun glasses, and affordable. So much so I bought my wife a second one. December 2, 2014
good value love the internal shade feature. Ordered size medium an fit was dead on Conpared to my old helmit over 10 years old this one is quiet.Internal sun shade is a great feature and workes with my glasses on. December 1, 2014
Good looking with nice features and fits well As luck would have it, I have not been able to ride since my GM54S in Titanium came in in size large. So I but it on and sat for a few hours as suggested and watched TV. The fit felt fine. No head ache and the weight seemed fine. No neck pain. My head circumference is 22 1/4" x 8" length x 6" width. I guess this makes me an "Intermediate Oval" head shape. The only snug place is the cheek pads (I have a 5 1/2" wide cheek bone) but this should get better when pads break in. The light looks better in hand than in the pitchers. Also the push button switch is flush so it is not to easy to find with gloves on but it looks good so I can live with that. The face shield is easy to change as I put on the silver iridium shield. It took about 10 seconds to do. The latch release to open up the flip-jaw feels solid and is easy to do with gloves on (Fly Street FL2 Gloves). Only gave it a GOOD rating as I have not used it on the road. The weather in NY is kinda bad at this time, but if it gets nice enough to ride I will up date on noise and "ride weight" of this helmet. November 21, 2014
outstanding value as mentioned already in the reviews The value is unbeatable as stated in other reviews. I will make a comment on the fit. I am Chinese like 1 out of 4 people on this earth. My head is LLLarrgge, round and somewhat flat in the back. I have had huge problems finding helmets that fit. I tolerated other helmets but they always had pressure points. This is the first helmet that I can say actually fits me. I have tried on alooooot of helmets believe me and this one fits. This is my second helmet. The first one pooped out after 3 years. hope this helps those with big round heads. November 18, 2014
GMax GM54S Good overall helmet. Doesn't feel to heavy. Only downside is that a lot of air comes in from the neck area, making it a little chilly to ride. The visor fogs up but if you're moving it'll go away pretty fast. November 10, 2014

RevZilla Store asked: Why did you choose this?
Ryan S: I knew I wanted a modular helmet. This one had a great price for the options I was looking for: built-in sun shades, modular capabilities, and cool style.
The back light is what really sold it for me though. 3-styles: always on, blinking slowly, blinking quickly. Safety first!

Kam E: HJC IS MAX BT unimpressed me... -_-

-Lots of vents (desert)
-Back light (night time visibility)

Faran R: I already have a full face helmet and I wanted a modular for street riding and just get lazy at times with a face full.
After ready reviews from many different websites on sub $200 helmets this seemed to have received the most positive feed back.
Hopefully it doesn't disappoint. Gmax does seem to carry really comfortable helmets for the price.

Roberto B: I Have the Non-Modular version of this helmet, and like the style and the rear light. The modular feature makes it easier to talk without removing the helmet. May 2, 2014
Gary W: Like brand and apperance Mar 27, 2014
Andrew N: I picked this helmet because I had seen it in a shop where I live and had a chance to try it on and test out the modular features its has. The helmet feels very solid and provides good air flow when your riding. It also comes in an XS and that is very much appreciated as I have had a very hard time finding a helmet that will fit correctly and do what I want it to. Mar 24, 2014
brent b: I like the look of this one and it had much better reviews than the cheaper helmets I looked at as well as some of the more expensive ones. I had 200 dollars as my self inflicted limit. I wanted a bluetooth but it looks as though anything under 450 isn't worth buying as a single unit. Mar 22, 2014
Rhea s: This is a great helmet and I love it so much. Sep 24, 2013
Chris B: I went with this helmet because of the features and the price. I was originally looking at the regular 54s, but then I saw this styling and really liked it. Sep 8, 2013
Phillip M: Great fit and nice graphic design. Sep 5, 2013
A shopper asked: I have a full face helmet but wear glasses. I was interested in this helmet bc it was recommended by another Vstar owner. I like the brake light ability and the modular aspect.

Will the face close if I'm wearing my glasses or do I have to take them off, close the helmet, then slip them in through my visor like my full face one?

I like the communication pockets in the ears. How does that work or do you need other items?

Thanks!

Travon M: As far as the glasses go, you can slide the helmet on A LOT easier with the face open, and yes it will close with no problem. Another awesome thing about this is the inner shaded visor that slides down from the top so you do not have to worry about shades or buying an additional dark visor (this also gives you good distance from glasses to inner visor). I tend to put this helmet on with my glasses already on, close the face, drop the inner visor and ride out. As far as the communication pocket goes, I used a wired Bluetooth (earbuds with mic towards the bottom of the cord) which seemed to fit good, however; with the mic below the front of the helmet, I got a lot of wind gushing in to the mic so no one could understand me. I'm sure if the mic was attached to the ear itself,
It would sound a lot better. Overall, this helmet has good ventilation, great comfort, and to me is a must for glasses.

Chad S: Don't use the communication piece but if I wear glasses I put them on with the face open. Not through the visor. I think you need glasses that are thin and hug your head though. I have a certain pair with thin ear pieces. My Oakley eye glasses are too wide (rounded) off my head and I would be afraid of bending them in under the tight foam. The light is just flashing. Doesn't really do anything with breaks that I know of. Dec 15, 2014

Isaak R: The face is able to close even with glasses on. The ear pockets do require an aftermarket communications set, the helmet does not come with a radio or bluetooth headset. Dec 15, 2014
