Fly Women's Butane Pants 4.1 5 16 16
Well-fitting, feature-full, budget pants I'm a women's 12 in regular clothes (29" waist, 41" hip). I bought the 9/10 size and it fits really well. Snug but comfortable. With the liner in, I can only comfortably wear a base layer. With the liner out, I can wear these over my regular jeans. The velcro adjustable waist is really nice as it allows me to cinch up the waistband so there is no gap when I'm in the riding position. It also feels very secure on my body, so I don't think they will be sliding off in a slide. They are a touch poofy and do make some noise when you walk. To me, that's not really a big deal. I'm 5'8", lots of leg. The knee armor actually rests over my knees! The armor is also pretty flexible so it's not uncomfortable to wear. I like being able to cinch up the cuffs with velcro so they won't get caught on my foot pegs and to prevent wind from creeping in. The legs on the zippers are two-way (on the outer shell only), so you can unzip them from the top for a bit of airflow. The insulated liner does not have this two-way zipper. Things I don't like: Soooo much velcro. They are so noisy to take off and a bit of a nuisance to get on and off if I want to keep my boots on during the process. I've had these for 2 years now and some of the velcro pieces along the leg have come unsewed/unglued. Also, some of the stitching on the leg zipper flap has come undone. I've had to sew/glue some velcro patches back in place. Annoying. But the pants have stayed together in all the critical areas. They do keep me nice and toasty in the fall/winter months here in Chicago. I haven't had them out in a serious downpour, but for the brief cloudburst here and there, I've had no problem staying dry underneath. If I could do it again, I would get these in the all black color. Oil, grease, and grime doesn't wipe off very easily, and it's very visible on the silver color. This is my first experience with Fly Racing brand. I come away with the impression that they make a good-fitting, protective, and feature-full product, but that they cheap out on the finishing touches just to save themselves a few bucks. I would consider Fly products in the future, but only at sale or closeout prices. My 4-star rating is based on the sale price. These would be 3 stars at the full asking price. November 2, 2015
Inexpensive but not "cheap" We bought these overpants for my wife - who often complains of being cold on bike rides at temperatures between 15~25ºC, so these pants were supposed to handle that issue. On the first ride, at nearly 32ºC for a full day, we discovered that there is ABSOLUTELY NO AIR FLOW in these pants, even if the side zippers are open down half-way! Needless to say, the reviews saying that these are not hot-weather or summer-wearing pants are correct: if you expect to ride in +25ºC, prepare to overheat and sweat inside what can only be described as double-layer black garbage bags. However, the stitching is great and the knee armour is adjustable - as is the waist via velcro straps - so the pants are very well made; they just lack ventilation. Were rather looking forward to a few autumn rides, and given that the inside doesn't breathe at all, we suspect they also won't let any precipitation in either! September 7, 2015
Snow Pants!! They fit nice and have a very thick liner that would probably keep you warm in a blizzard but it's hot where i live so this was NOT for me. May 8, 2015
never got cold I took a long ride to Fields Or. through rain. snow ,and some sunshine. With a temp. of 42 degrees I never got cold, these pants worked great, they run a little large, I am glad that I ordered a size smaller than I wear, good pants April 30, 2015
Excellent Product Butane pants are comfortable and perfect for riding long distance. I wore them on a trip from Ohio to Maine in October in all types of weather (sun, rain, snow) with no problems. I do wish the liner would have the ability to close the gap at the bottom as small amounts of the wind was able to flow up the pants. December 29, 2014
Poor quality & durability I bought these for my wife. After 3-4 rides, they began to break down at the seams. I'm looking into a warranty exchange now. They're warm and comfortable, according to my wife. But, don't expect them to be durable. December 4, 2014
Great Bang for the Buck Just recently bought these pants from the closeout section and they are perfect for under 100$. These pants run a little larger then I expected. They are easy to get get over my pants and the fasteners on the hips made it easier to keep them up. Also I liked that there are straps by your feet to tighten around the ankles and plenty of pocket space. November 3, 2014
Too little rise. I ordered appropriate size for all other measurements, but there was far too little rise. The pants seemed to be acceptable in all other respects, though I obviously did not wear them beyond trying them on. I was disappointed they did not work out. October 23, 2014

RevZilla Store asked: Why did you choose this?
Steffani R: I live in Seattle and needed some type of riding pant for my fall/winter commute to school. The mornings are just a bit too cold for just jeans and thermals. I had previously purchased a Fly jacket and when I saw these I just had to get them. I also found a review about sizing that I thought was very informative about sizing. Not all women who ride are thin, so it is often difficult to judge sizes by just using a standard manufacturer size chart. Nov 17, 2015
Cathy W: Price, size & warmth! I ride a Road Star and western NY gets pretty cold in late fall! Nov 1, 2015
marija b: wanted to be warm, and these were on sale Oct 2, 2015
Jacqueline P: The reviews are reassuring and I'm in need of some good pants for riding. I just started riding, I've been on the road only twice now, and safety is key for me. Jun 3, 2015
H O: Nice look, good price Apr 14, 2015
Lauren G: Price point, good reviews, desperately need daily commuting pants that stay dry in the rainy NW. Feb 1, 2015
Amy S: price Oct 23, 2014
Jack T: seemed like a good choice for my wife Oct 9, 2014
Dianne D: Some of the reviews were from people who ride in Minnesota and other cold areas. They gave these pants good reviews for handling cold weather, and the styling suits me. Mar 1, 2014
Patricia D: Thought they would be a good, warm and waterproof option, and they are, but don't plan on being able to wear them when it's not cold or rainy. If you remove the liner they are reduced to just a thin layer of textile between you and the road. I wouldn't recommend these, if you want something protective to ride in the summer months anyway. A shopper asked: How is the durability of the fabric and are there shells in both the hips and knees? I'm looking for something with this look with great protection. May 14, 2014

crystal b: I love these pants. They are made of ballistic nylon and offer a ton of protection. I wear these in the morning when the temps are below 50 degrees and I can't feel any wind. There is a removable quilted liner for added warmth. There are shells in the knees but not the hips. They are a little bulky but that is a small trade off for the protection you get. I usually take them off as soon as I'm off my bike because they aren't that comfortable to move around in with the shells. They slip on right over my jeans or work attire. I love the reflective piping for better visibility as well. Jul 16, 2014

Dianne D: I've had these pants for nearly two years and frequent use (I ride year-round and mostly in the mountains), and so far there is no visible wear. There are shells in both knees, but the protection in the hip area is a series of pads stitched into the fabric rather than a single shell. Both layers (insulated liner and waterproof outer layer) are warm enough to keep me warm even in the teens. Just the outer layer (this is the layer that contains the protection) works great in the summer for rain and chilly mountain weather. May 15, 2014

Barry J: Shells only in the knees. Great pants love them. They are warm and will give you the protection you need. May 14, 2014

esther p asked: I am looking for a reasonably priced pair of armored overpants for wearing in temperatures between 65 and 85 degrees F. I don't start out on a ride if it's raining.

The problem is that I am 5'1" with an inseam of 26" when standing and 28" when sitting. These armored pants fit the bill, except the inseam on a size 7/8, closest to my size, is 30". So, these will be two inches too long when I'm sitting on the bike. I guess I can live with that, since there is no way to shorten them with their long zipper.

What I am very concerned about is the fit of the knee armor. I clearly don't want the knee armor to sit on my shins! How much can I move the knee armor up so it sits on my knees? Can I move the knee armor up 2 - 3 inches?

How hot will these pants be in temperatures of 65 to 85 degrees? I will be the pillion rider, so I'll have some wind protection from the front rider.

Thanks loads!

Michele C: I bought these pants but haven't been able to use them yet. I cannot address how comfortable they are between 65 and 85 degrees. However, I put them on last night to see how they fit. I am 5'2" and have an inseam of 28-1/2". The length for my size pants is 31-1/2". I could move the armor up 2", but 3" would be better. Based upon your own measurements and the size you need, it is going to be close. Having a short stature makes it difficult to find anything off the rack to fit. I bought these because they have a liner and I can cinch the waist and seemed to be the best option for me. Feb 19, 2015

DIANA E: I'm sorry, I can not help you, but when I bought the pants I mistakenly chose a larger size; I did it online, then I should return them. So I never used them.
I can tell you that they are very nice pants and muiy good quality in relation to price.

M. Rebecca B: Very good. Lots of pockets. I had to order hip pads because they did not come with them. I wear leggings under them. They can be very warm in the summer. May 28, 2015

A shopper asked: It seems to be screwed up at the factory - they are not selling many if a size 18 has a 50 inch waist. Jun 13, 2011

tomZilla: The Fly Women's Sizing chart is correct and these pants are oversized. They do have an adjustable strap on the right side that can be cinched up about 2 inches. Jun 14, 2011
