I always considered it a design flaw that my ContourGPS requires a special cable in order for it to charge and record at the same time. Using a regular USB cable only charges the device...if you turn on the camera to record it operates on battery only. Don't know why they designed it like that but it is what it is.
I originally purchased the Contour USB Car Charger for an off roading trip I was taking my Jeep on in the deserts of West Texas. I wanted to record every minute of my trip and knew the battery wouldn't last. I got this item and it did the trick. Plugged into the power outlet of my Jeep, my ContourGPS recorded until I filled up my 64 gigabyte memory card (which was almost 7.5 hrs at the quality settings I was using).
I also use this cable on my BMW K1600 GTL. I keep my ContourGPS mounted to the bike using a Contour flex strap. I then plug the Contour USB Car Charger into the camera on one end and into the bike using a Powerlet to cigarette outlet adapter on the other. Works like a charm!
I dinged the cable on the bang for the buck rating simply because it is kinda pricey and because it isn't cool that the camera can't use a regular cable to record and charge at the same time. But if you need that ability then go ahead and shell out the money and enjoy knowing you won't run out of juice on your Contour.

I have used it once just to make sure I could charge the Roam and record at the same time. It worked just fine but given the sealed back was open to do this it seamed to defeat the purpose of a water proof camera. However, a good item to have if you plan to do a multi day trip where you won't have a computer to recharge the internal battery.
