Bell Custom 500 Cabbie Helmet 

Throwbacks and retro lids are nice, but nothing beats an original. Back in 1954 Bell founder Roy Richter formed his first helmet out of fiberglass and named it the “500.” That moment was ground zero for the modern motorsport helmet and it gave rise to an entire industry. Bell’s new Custom 500 pays homage to Richter’s original design and adds modern protective technology to bring the design up-to-date while still keeping the original’s aesthetic. By combining a custom fiberglass layup with a specially designed EPS foam layer, Bell engineers were able to craft a helmet that is at once light weight, narrow in profile, and DOT-compliant. Adding custom paint-inspired graphics, chrome trim work (on some graphics) and a quilted liner, the new Custom 500 custom looks as good as it performs.

Better then I expected The product is pretty straight forward, its a helmet shield visor. Once I received the product, I was surprised with the bottom fold to redirect the wind and rain drops towards the side. I was liked that the visor wasn't completely tinted but half only. Great! The Bell 500 is nothing special compared to modern helmets. But when it comes to any retro open face helmet, there is nothing better. The fit is comfortable, and with a name like Bell behind it you can't go wrong. December 24, 2012

Awesome helmet I bought the helmet and the visor, and am really happy with the purchase. If you ride a cafe racer one of these is a perfect fit. Apart from looking totally badass, it is really light, and gives the rider lots of vision. The visor is a great addition to keep the wind out of your eyes although you can easily throw on some shades and a bandana. November 12, 2012
A stylish choice for cruising... Not nearly as quiet or comfortable at highway speeds as a full face helmet, but what do you expect from an inexpensive open-face helmet? The 500 looks great, is comfortable, and is surprisingly quiet below 40mph. Go above 70, however, and the helmet either wants to lift off your head or presses uncomfortably into your forehead. Recommended, but only for cruising/shorter rides when fashion is more important than quiet/comfort. November 5, 2012

the ultimate cafe helmet Ok so I'm a big sportbike guy and therefore a huge full face helmet guy, but having just bought a used Thruxton, I had to go the 3/4 helmet route. Honestly, if you're gonna go the 3/4 helmet, what better route to take than the Bell Custom 500. Lets be fair, with any of those helmets there is only so much protection you're getting. It's a lot about the look because all the DOT approved 3/4's are gonna offer just about the same protection. Regarding style, you really can't go wrong considering all the choices of graphics Bell offers. I went with the black flake just to match the retro theme, and boy does it fit the bill. Regarding fit, well lets just say it is spot on. I wear a size small in the Shoei X-Twelve and AGV GP-Tech, and sure enough the size small Bell Custom 500 fit perfectly. I wear earplugs when I ride so as far as wind noise is concerned I can't be the best judge, but having ridden once without earplugs I'd have to say it really wasn't bad. Bottom line, the Bell Custom 500 didn't make me look like a bobble head, is very comfortable, super stylish, and offers just as much protection as you can expect from a 3/4 or half helmet out there. I do have to say that I wish Revzilla had offered the higher end goggle brands like the Leon Jeantet or Halcyon. But that's no knock on the helmet. October 22, 2012
