Poor build quality
Like the other reviewers mentioned about this SMX-6 boot both vented and non vented style, the screw holding the side plastic piece backed off on my right boot and is starting to back out on the left after 5 rides of highway commuting to work.(boots where 3 weeks old. You have no access to re tighten the screw since it is behind the liner. Poor design and build quality. Alpinestars has the audacity to make me pay for shipping for a manufacturing fault on brand new 270 dollar boots to get them fixed. I liked them riding but if you want to roll the dice on dodgy build quality go right ahead, for me I am done with alpinestars as everything I have from them has some sort of problem.(glove finger tip stitching blew out also after a few weeks).

Great protection
I purchase this boot due to the protection, style, fit and price break. Very comfortable with a wider toe box than most brands. Very light with good ventilation. Good tactile feel with the rear brake pedal which was missing from my old boots. Zipper and retention works well and on the inside. Only con is that the shin protector protrudes and impossible to fit jeans over the protector. Which might be a good thing and force me to wear proper riding gear every time I swing a leg. Nice styling so I can always tuck my jeans in. I recommend this product as expected with all AlpineStar gear. RwoM

Had to return mine
I've has these for six months and had to send them back because the screw holding the right external ankle support backed out. It looks like a simple fix, except the screw is completely inaccessible. A slit in the lining of the boot for access to keep the screw tight would be a good idea.

I like everything else about these boots. They offer a lot of protection for a street boot and are comfortable.

I'm moving on to something else if the screw backs out again. A guy could go broke paying return shipping to keep having it fixed.

Great Riding Boots
This is my first pair of proper riding boots - before this, I've worn 5.11 side zip boots as well as Red Wing 1205 work boots.

In comparison to those non-riding specific boots, these are fantastic! They are light (unlike the redwings) while also feeling extremely protective (unlike the 5.11s). They are also very flexible which is good for small amounts of walking. The flexibility is also great for those with wide feet. I have freakishly wide duck feet (EEEE/4E) which makes it very difficult to find any kind of motorcycle specific boot. But in this product, the flexibility allows the leather to 'give' around the widest point on my feet - life saver. I have absolutely no discomfort after 2-3 hours of riding. For reference, I usually wear 8 or 8.5 in 4E width for my normal shoes; I am wearing the S-MX 6 in Euro 42 or US 8.

Despite this flexibility, they have a good amount of rigidity against the movements that will injure your foot. The ankle piece in particular provides good support, though it's only on the outside portion of the ankle. This arrangement provides noticeably more support against eversion of the foot versus inversion (see wikipedia), but for the price and light weight, I can live with that.

Finally the profile of the boot looks pretty bulky, but it's just right so I can choose to wear my jeans over or under the boot. This is nice since I don't generally like the look of wearing space boots and these boots are much less conspicuous with the pants over. That said, the shin protector will still be noticeable under pants.

That said, these boots are the bees knees. They're light, protective, and fairly stylish for moon boots. I dig 'em. I've only had them for a month now, but will update when I've had a few more months.

Big calves, legs and ankles, READ THIS REVIEW
I hope I can save you some time and frustration. I read other reviews and posts about the big calves subject on many other boots and talked to gear experts and even got a recommendation from a person with larger measurements than I have, and none of them worked. So here's a determined person's 2 cents. If none of the boots you are trying on will zip up, then look for a boot with a zipper on the inside of the leg. You can hide the fact that the boot is about to explode easier on the inside of your leg. A plus is that this boot hides the zipper behind some Velcro so any alterations you make will be hidden too. My intent was to take this boot to a cobbler and have them add more material where the zipper is stitched onto the boot. That would leave a lot of the Velcro showing and again, having it on the inside of the leg is easier to hide. Also, size up. It didn't matter that I'm exactly an 11 or a 45 euro in the foot bed, none of the others I tried were even close on the leg.
My measurements are
US shoe and boot size 11
ankle 11.5"
calf 18.5"
at 11.5" up from heel 16.25"

Previous to this boot, I tried:
Cortech Latigo RR perf. and non perf. size 11 and 12
Sidi ST size 45
Alpinestars SupertechR size 45
TCX R-S2 EVO size 45 (formerly Oxtar) This one was recommended from several sources and ended up being the tightest one.

I got this boot in a 46, and to my surprise, I can actually zip it up and fit my track suit in there without having to do surgery on the zipper. There's some extra room in the toe box cause I went a size larger, but it's manageable and I can still feel the controls. It does look like it's going to explode at any moment and the tpu in the front is lined up around the 2 o'clock position instead of 12. It helps that there's a lot of Velcro.
Having tried some of the high end boots, I do wish I could have made them work. The protection on this boot is a little flimsy compared, but I do think it's adequate and will work better than a lot of the gimmicky stuff. The lack of hardware on the inside of the leg is a big plus, because it's not clicking or snagging on my bike which would be a serious distraction.
Comfort is surprising too, they are well padded and lined. I considered removing the padding and 'moisture wicking liner' from the leg area due to it's uselessness when you're tucking in leather race pants, but since they fit I'm leaving it in there. Comfort on the ankles/calves seems to be all about how well I keep the wrinkles in my track suit away from pressure points. I've worn them around the house as well as on a 50 mile ride and they were comfortable. I would have forgotten I had them on except for the squeaking:)
The plastic support is the primary part that seems intended to help me keep from breaking my ankle. It allows a great deal of movement, so only a crash will tell. It is glued to the rear stretch panel for some reason, perhaps to keep it from moving forward. Also I noticed the toe box has a lot of flexibility, which is good for feel, but probably not so good for crush protection.
Mine didn't come with the little Allen wrench for the sliders. Seems like that would be needed if they ever started to back out. I'll have to find one to put in my tool box. I noticed the replacement sliders come with it and are cheap, so I may just wait till I manage to get a toe down and get one that way.
Back to sizing, I did notice that people's advise seemed to only pertain to the size and boot they were wearing. So if you're not a 45 or 46 euro, my info might be useless to you. Good luck:) it took me many tries, but these are so much better than riding shoes or the casual boots I was wearing.

Really Perfect All-Rounder Sport / Tourer Boot
This is my First review of a long boot. I have a pair of SM X-2 shorty boots as comparison. The sizing for me is consistent with the other Alpine Stars fit. I'm a 10.5 W which is really 44 in both the SMX-2 and SMX-6. Good room in the toe box.

I've ridden 150 km in these after walking around the house for an hour to break them in.. They're stiff without being uncomfortable, and the sole is very soft. On the controls, the boot and toe pad feels is a bit stiff for shifting, but this only a comparison to SMX-2 and the ease of moving the ankle on a short boot vs. full length. In 90 degree Thailand heat, the boots are warm, but the inner wicking material does its job, my feet were never uncomfortable.

The Velcro is very sticky, I just wish the calf would cinch a bit tighter for a more snug fit.. Otherwise, the quality of the product is top notch.

Delivery and customer service was impressively fast and I'm looking forward to a 1k km Europe tour next in these bad boys. Did I mention the look of the black with red logo looks perfect on the Monster.

Great all round boot
Just purchased a black pair in a size 45 (us 10.5). Great fit and very comfortable just like my old SMX5 that were renowned for being comfortable and I was glad to see they had not lost this in the new version of a great boot.
They fit nice and firm, but not too tight and you can adjust the fit by the Velcro flaps that over the zip. The flexibility is great which makes gear changes easy and also finding the rear brake not difficult. They fit under my Kevlar jeans with no problems and look good.
I would recommend these boots to anyone who wants a sport / sports touring boot without going the whole nine yards on a racing boot.

6000 miles and a hole through my sole :(
Ordered these on 07/19/2015, and maybe put about 6,000 street miles on them. On OEM gsx-r rear sets, and I now have a hole through the middle of my left sole, with the right showing little wear only in the peg location. This is ridiculous, as my other alpine boots have 2x the miles, same pegs, and barely any wear in the same location. Really disappointed because the boot as a whole is great, just the soles on mine are very poor quality.

Awesome boot
This is my first boot, bought it for my first track day coming up, but I've used it with my suit to ride around and break everything in. I have a wide foot, size 11, sometimes 10.5, so I got the size 45. As far as fitting this boot fits spot on, it feels great on your foot, I rode in 90 degree weather and it didn't get too hot, I have the black/white non perforated version. I gave it a slight point down on fit because the only part of the boot I had problems with is the calf. My suit is a bit big on the calf so there's some loose leather, not much. The boot zips fine over it, a little snug, but the velcro is pretty tough to to get all the way across and Velcro on the top by the calf. I do have big calves, and the Velcro is adjustable, but still had trouble closing it. Other than that the boot does the job, still stiff so it needs some breaking in I'm sure. Definitely recommend!

This is an excellent boot for the price
I was looking for a boot that was firmer in the footbed, offered great shin protection and was in the $300 price range. After 3 weeks of thorough searching and product reviews i decided on this one and it is awesome! I have been riding with these boots for a little over 2 weeks now, 4-5 days a week on the twisty side roads in the smoky mountains of NC and the performance is like night and day compared to my last boots. When I was ordering them the guy at revzilla more than suggested I should order a size down, and i was skeptical as I am on the larger size of 11 and have had to send boots back before to a different company. I decided to take his advice and when they came in they fit like a charm right out of the box. I also have a wider foot and still they were perfect. I ride hours at a time with no discomfort what so ever and could even see walking in them for a while. If you are looking for a boot that does excellent on the street as well as the track then look no further because this is the one!

Good boot for street riding and your occasional track day.

I already own the vented version. Great boots, comfy, no issues at all on a 2000 miles trip this summer. Now I want something for the upcoming milder weather.

I was looking for an entry-level track boot. These seemed to provide a nice balance between sporty features and reasonable price. I've had Alpinestars boots before, and was pleased with the quality... these were consistent with my expectations. They are well-built. comfortable, and sturdy.

I wear these every single day. After breaking them in, I am far more comfortable riding with them than riding with normal shoes anymore. Best of all, keeps the squid factor down...

How would you compare the SMX6 TO THE SMX5 in terms of off the bike / walking comfort? (Stiffness / mobility etc.)
A shopper on Aug 24, 2013
BEST ANSWER: I have worn both around the store and bought the SMX6, and I find the SMX6 is just much more comfortable. But not that stiff, once you break them in they tend to be really comfortable. They are a bit stiff, but definitely easy to walk around him. I wouldn't go for a long hike in them when you get off the bike.
Can you adjust them to fit snug around calf? I don't have a race suit so I would be wearing my Kevlar jeans over them and just wondering if they are loose or tight against the calf.
John R on Jan 17, 2015
BEST ANSWER: Yeah, they are fairly adjustable. I mostly wear mine with jeans, and the Velcro on the sides has good amount to close or open depending on your leg size. These are very well designed/made you will be fine no matter what you wear them with.
Hey guys i want this smx 6 boots can you pls help me to choose from black red and the other one is white?which i color is ok.tnx so much
A shopper on Oct 12, 2014
BEST ANSWER: The black and red are great.

Mine have held up well and I use mine daily. Not sure how the white would have held up in the same situation but it would probably depend on how often you wear them or perhaps if you were buying them to match some other gear that you already had.
I'm having difficulty deciding between perf and nonperf. I would like an almost all year shoe. Does this mean I should go with nonperf to withstand the colder days and possibly an occasional rain? I reside in Florida now but expect a move to St. Louis, hope that helps understand the temperature ranges I am referring to.
Kurashev on Mar 25, 2014
BEST ANSWER: It all depends on you. How often you will ride in rain or cold weather. I don't know anything about the climate in St. Louis, but I bought the pref ones because it's mostly hot here much like Florida. And when it does get cold I just layer up with extra socks. Again it all depends if riding is your main form of transportation and getting wet, then I would consider getting the non-prefs.
I've just bought a size 43. They feel very tight. My toes aren't curled but they are (just) touching the end of the boot. Do you think the boots will loosen a little or should I look at changing to a bigger size?
A shopper on Sep 18, 2014
BEST ANSWER: Mine have not loosened at all since I bought them, from what I can tell. I bought them slightly large, though, to put in better footbeds, while leaving a little room for thicker socks for colder weather.

I love the boots. Easy on and off, feel like slippers, and look good, of course.
Are this boots waterproff?? Hi, live in a zone that rains alot, and some times i get 1 or 2 hours of rain when riding, are this boots capable of keeping my foot dry?
A shopper on May 11, 2014
BEST ANSWER: If you are really worried about rain then go with something goretex. These boots aren't waterproof but do a good job at keeping your feet dry in normal rain conditions but they aren't really designed for extremes.
Would they fit wearing them under jeans or for street use? Can you use them for street daily use or they won't be very comfortable?
Richie23 on Jun 15, 2016
BEST ANSWER: They have fit under every pair of jeans I have owned. And I used them to go to school and walked around campus with no issues.
I've read in some reviews people have a hard time shifting with these boots and them getting stuck. Is this a real problem or are they just noobs?
A shopper on Mar 22, 2016
BEST ANSWER: I have no issues shifting. I love these boots and use them often.
How do you know which is perf or non perf when ordering?
Richard C on Sep 20, 2015
BEST ANSWER: I am asking how you know you are getting the perforated or non perforated when you order.
I have worn the Alpinestars smx1 shoes, would these have the same sizing as those?
AlanS on Aug 19, 2014
BEST ANSWER: I would say yes, I am a US 10 and the 45 fit perfectly. I looked at the SMX1 but no protection on the shins and I needed it one time and these boots did the job. I went to their store in Philly and tried on 10 different boots and this was the best fit and I have a wide foot. (:
