Alpinestars S-MX 1 Boots 4.7 5 270 270
Great Protection, excellent venting I recently, as in 4 days ago, was hit by a car on my left side breaking off my foot peg and slicing my radiator hose. Subsequently my left foot was hit in the accident and it fared pretty good considering. I didn't crash, but I ended up breaking a few bones in my foot as a result of the accident. Had I been wearing regular shoes, I believe my ankle would have been broken as well as more bones, or worse. I would buy these again, however I'm thinking of upgrading to higher "racing" style boots when I get back to riding again in a few months. November 8, 2015
Great Boot I have owned multiple boots over the last 20 plus years and I can honestly say that I love the fit and protection these boots provide. As far as walking, you can certainly do some walking and forget you are wearing your boots. September 19, 2015
Like others have said they run about a size large I am glad I followed the advise to buy a size smaller, I am usually 8.5 to 9 on men shoe sizes and the size 42 (size 8 US) fits me perfectly. I have a wider foot than most, which sometimes is an issue when I buy shoes, but I had no problems with this boot. They look nice, and have ggod protection, which is what I was looking for. They are comfortable and could wear them all day if needed. The sole is a bit stiff, but that is good for riding motorcycle. September 18, 2015
Lightweight and comfortable I'm very particular when it comes to the weight of my footwear... The LIGHTER the BETTER! And the shoes are lightweight and comfortable. Would definitely recommend these to anyone looking. September 17, 2015
Great boot, espeially for walking These boots are great everyday boots. They are extremely comfortable walking, i commute to work and have a 10 minute walk from where i park to my building, these are as good or even better than regular shoes. The material on top could be a little firmer, i find a little discomfort when upshifting on the top of my foot. September 15, 2015
Great Comfortable boot. These boots are really nice! I use them daily for commuting to and from work, and on the weekends for hitting up the canyons. They're very comfortable, and have enough features to make you feel protected in the event of an accident. Despite all these pros, one area that I think needs some further consideration is the strap on top of the boot. It doesn't cinch down as tight as I would like. Pros: Toe Sliders for toe sliding goodness. Looks racey Over the top strap to keep your heel in place. Heal protection. Heavy duty sole Easy to get in and out. Comfortable Cons: Strap on top of the boot should be able to cinch down tighter. September 14, 2015
Zipper broke after 2 months Had these for two months before the zipper on the left shoe split and I was unable to repair it. Also had an issue with the heel protection; it kept getting caught on the left side heel guard. Ended up throwing some gorilla tape over it but the zipper broke shortly afterwards so ... here I am shopping for something else. October 25, 2015
No laces!! I HATE laces, that was the main reason why I bought this boot. Because it literally takes me 10 seconds to put both of them on, opposed to tying a lace which can take me up to a minute. I love the looks of these boots, I got the black after debating for hours of the white vs black. I went black because I didn't want to deal with cleaning the white all the time. I was overall a little bit disappointed with the comfort of these. I mean, yes they are comfortable overall. But even on the bike I noticed a little bit of slight discomfort in the arch of my feet. Which is odd. I believe it may just mean they need to be broken it, but who knows. I've been riding with them for 500 miles now and it still does it after about an hour of riding. It is decently comfortable to walk around on, it isn't great though, but it's okay to bring these to your job if you don't spend a lot of time kneeling or walking then you should be fine. I'd still recommend having a change of shoes for work unless you're a desk jockey like me. They seem like they would offer good protection in a crash (I hope I never find out) they just seem well made of tough materials. All in all, I love these boots. I've tried many before and I am extremely picky. My only advice to the company would be to make the inside a little more comfortable. I'm going to try some dr scholls and see if that makes any difference. September 7, 2015

Adam L: Coummiting boot, works out great.

I did take a hit from a big rock that fell from a truck on my right foot right below my inside ankle bone. It hurt a little but wasn't the hit that made you pull over and cry but if I didn't have these on then I would have.
Aug 19, 2015
javier axel m: i love this purchase because i can wear it all the time and they are very practical. Aug 17, 2015

J A: Looking for a warm weather 3/4 riding shoe with good protection. Aug 5, 2015

CHRIS D: I needed a riding shoe as the steel toe loafers that I wore during my accident last year were not enough to protect me from spraining my ankle. I was between the TCX-Square sport, the TCX-X-cube EVO WP and this shoe and ultimately went with this shoe because when talking with Josh from Revzilla, he recommended that with my style of aggressive riding around town and taking turns more than a commuter, this shoe would fit best. I also like the side zip! Apr 4, 2015

I dont hit the track, YET, so after a ton of due diligence, review, and video watching, emails to current users etc... I decided to run with a shoe versus a boot as i only hit the street. Jonathan L: The main reason is the built in features combined with the size. I wear size 14 so I did not want to buy something that was not already made small. The price was a selling point but it was more the style. I like the short boot / shoe style and combined with no laces replacable sliders and the safety features it just seemed like the right choice. Ritch G: I have the same problem. For me it's the left foot. The shift pad protector starts bending inward and it's definitely a defect. I have to push on the inside of the shoe upwards and try to work the bend out and when I'm done riding it's back again and my toes hurt. These boots are very comfortable on and off the bike and I'm surprised there's no recall on them. Sep 16, 2013

Charalampos P: Same problem with me! I have 2 pairs of these (all-black and black-white-red), one ~2y old and one ~1y old. The newer pair has the problem on both sides (left&right), the older only one. It feels like the "ceiling" of the boot in the front has collapsed right above the large toe area. It wasn't there in the beginning, as I have ridden extensively with the older pair and several times with the new one.
I effectively cannot wear/ride with those boots any more. I tried to squeeze it back inside but it's too hard and the location (tip of the shoe) too narrow to do anything drastic.
Surprises me too they didn't recall those as this is a definite defect on their end! Bought the 2nd pair here with Revzilla last October.
Any advice? I'm very frustrated as I love those boots otherwise. I'm about to contact Alpinestars Customer Care directly too.

Charalampos P: Tu N, this is the reply I just got from Alpinestars Customer Care Italy. Not sure if this helps at all
Dear valued customer,
Thanks for contacting Alpinestars and for riding with us.
Alpinestars products support office has been informed.

The boots can be fixed, but we understand that this is not a simple repair. In order to fix this is necessary to warm the boots up and put them back on their last.
My understanding is that you cannot contact the dealer where the boots were purchased from, however this is what we normally suggest.
On the other hand you might have the boots double checked by our Distributor- (...) - as this is our local Product Repair and Warranty center for Products in Greece-

Best regards,

A shopper asked: I'm looking for a street book like the A* SMX-1. I wear size 13 and my foot runs a bit wide. What boots/sizing would you recommend? Mar 24, 2012
Answer this · Send to friends Good question? Yes (0) No (0)
jettamkv21: I bought the 46 (11.5) even though i usually where a 12-12.5 depending of the type of shoe. They fit snug in the wide area of the foot at first but broke in nicely. and are a little loose at the top of the boot. i'd say go with the 48 (12.5) and if they are just way too tight and you don't think they'd break in enough for your foot send em back for the 49 (13.5) and run a little loose. Just don't wear them outside or on the bike and leave the tags on. Walk around the house a bit to get a feel for them. like they say they do the first exchange/return for free. Hope this helps May 22, 2012

starionrst2: I wear 11 comfortably and 10.5 with some pressure on the toes in most Nike shoes ... I got the SMX-1 size 10.5 US (45 EU) and they feel great. I put em on and walked around in them all day and no discomfort at all. I tend to think my foot is a little wider than normal, so I was worried if that would be an issue with the SMX-1, but it was a perfect fit. Plus they do wear in a little bit...so walk around in them for like an hour and see how you like them... So iin your case, go for the 12.5US (48EU)...if not you can always exchange them... Good luck. Maxilou: Width should not be a problem, my foot is kinda wide and mine fit fine. The general rule for sizing is to find your size on the Euro/American transition chart and get a size smaller, I did it and mine fit perfectly. I strongly recommend these boots, comfortable and lots of great features. They look really cool too (not important for most but looking dorky ain't cool!) Mar 26, 2012

A shopper asked: Does the S-MX1 have a "hard" lower shin protection and "hard" ankle protection. Can you kindly please add more to the description regarding safety? Oct 3, 2011
Answer this · Send to friends Good question? Yes (0) No (0)
starionrst2: Not too much lower shin protection, however it will definitely be better than a sneaker. Its more like a construction boot level of protection but a lot more comfortable and lightweight....Ankle protection is pretty good, I mean if you take a fall in these guys in will definitely be better than in sneakers or boots...
I feel safe when I ride in these and the comfort is great.

AliB: There is no hard shin protection on this low-cut boot. On the ankle bone, there is an External TPU "hard" protector. If you are looking for better protection, we recommend taking a look at the Alpinestars S-MX 5 Boot or the Alpinestars S-MX R Boots. Oct 14, 2011

jettamkv21: No for the shins and no for the ankle, just the TPU piece on the outer ankle. only real "Hard" protection is the heel cup, toe slider and the stiff sole of the boot. May 22, 2012

Moustafa K asked: are these boots waterproof ? Oct 7, 2014
Answer this · Send to friends Good question? Yes (0) No (0)
James L: See manufacturer and product listing for materials. I would not consider these waterproof but they would likely keep your feet dry unless riding in heavy rain for an extended time. These are great boots and are comfortable to walk in and breathe well, which are the main reasons I bought these. Oct 7, 2014

A shopper asked: I am looking for something to use as a daily ride so do not want a full length boot. I also want something that will be tall enough to tuck my leathers into during recreational track days. Will the S-MX1 boot be tall enough to tuck leathers into or would I need to go to the taller S-MX2? Sep 26, 2011
Answer this · Send to friends Good question? Yes (0) No (0)
Maxilou: About the same hight as a regular hiking boot, leathers probably won't stay tucked, but they would be good as an every day rider. I wear running socks with them for more padding when I know I'm going to have them for long periods of time. Mar 26, 2012
Reply to Maxilou Good answer? Yes (0) No (0)
Mbrowne: I have both pairs and the smx2 is definately taller and better for tucking your leathers into. Would advise you order a size under your regular size as they fit big and wide. Jan 17, 2012
Reply to Mbrowne Good answer? Yes (0) No (0)
Stevan P: The SMX-1 and SMX-2 are pretty short and there might not enough material above the ankle to really tuck in leathers or pants. We'd suggest a higher boot for race leathers. Oct 19, 2011

ninjabt: I would go taller. Unless your leathers are tight around your feet, the boots zip up to tight for anything to be tucked in comfortably. Mar 9, 2013

Jim W: Not sure if this helps but I normally wear a 9-9 1/2 depending on the shoe. I tried these on and found the 9 1/2 to be too big. I ended up with a 9 u.s., 43 euro. I also wear thin socks with these shoes so keep sock thickness in mind. May 5, 2015

Marc T: I wear size 12 in US and I got the EU size 47. Fits perfect...Revzilla chart was spot on. Revzilla has a corrected size chart for size 11 and they recommend EU size 45. If you have extra wide feet, I would go with EU size 46. This should not be too tight and not too big. If you get the wrong size, Revzilla has a great exchange/return program. Good luck. Nov 12, 2015

Marc T: I wouldn't recommend these boots for track riding. They don't offer full shin/lower leg coverage if you fall. They are about the height of hiking boots so they probably won't look good with leather pants. I use them with my Kevlar jeans. Nov 12, 2015

Answer this · Send to friends Good question? Yes (0) No (0)
zivbenster: The shoes run about 1 Euro size larger, so where i usually fit 43 pretty snugly (actually i look for 43.5 where possible) these 43 are more like rev'it 44.
another thing is that if your feet arent too wide- you could possibly unlace them all the way to make them even looser.

all in all- nothing beats trying them on!

RevZilla: If the boot is facing you, pull the slider towards you where it says "pull." After that all you have to do is slide the piece to the side and it should come off no problem. Keep in mind that the pulling portion takes a little bit of elbow grease. Aug 21, 2012
