AFX FX-39 Dual Sport Strike Helmet 4.4 5 238 238
Good helmet for the price but watch the size I really like this helmet and even though the strap rubbed a little on my neck like the other reviews talked about, I got used to it and now that it is broken in, it doesn't bother me a bit. When you get it straight out of the box, it will seem a bit restrictive on your neck, but just don't tighten it down so tight. About the size.... I measured my head according to the size chart and it said that I fell in the Large category, but my gut just said my head was bigger so I ordered the XL and I am sure glad I did. Perfect fit. Large would have been too small. If you're on the cusp--go bigger. May 7, 2013
First Duel sport helmet This would be my first duel sport helmet i purchased, it is a great buy. The helmet fits great and is not bulky in any way. There are a couple down falls to the helmet. There is no where to thread the helmet lock strap that i have on my bike. There is no easy way to secure the helmet to my bike. The other, is the extra webbing from the chin strap. There is no where to tie that in to prevent the webbing from flapping in the wind and against ones neck. I do like how the air vents allow for a comfortable cool ride without sweating inside the helmet. Its a light helmet and has a great view, even with the shield down. All and all I like this helmet and hope to have this product for a long time. April 29, 2013
good helmet Haven't used the helmet a lot (~150 miles) but I am very satisfied with it so far. Be sure to check the size the helmet is larger ordered a medium at first was too big exchanged for small and it was perfect. April 15, 2013
awesome style, fit, and weight. I love the undistorted view. helments have come a long way. Additional vents a plus. style...orange with urban camo down right cool! Great for winter and summer... Animal Al...northern Wisconsin May 14, 2013
Great helmet for a great price I bought a AFX dirt helmet and was so impressed with the fit and quality that I decided it was time to upgrade my road helmet. I quickly got caught up in the Adventure helmet rabbit hole and ended up looking at $600 helmets. Before this I bought a AGV DS EVO-8 and was not happy, i thought before I step up to the next price point let's see how the entry level fairs and I'm sold on this one. You get what you pay for in many cases but this I feel like you get much more, the quality is nice but not completely buttoned up, it is fairly noisy but not much more noisy than the $400 AGV and that one didn't have slots for goggles. My only hangup is that the neck strap clip could have been done a little better so it is more comfortable, however I love the quick release. If you don't like the quick release get the FLY trecker, they are the same helm. Got it quick, revzilla rocks. May 13, 2013
Great Helmet At this price range I was a little skeptical of the quality, but this helmet definitely exceeded my expectations. The fit is great, the only thing is that glasses don't fit great underneath, but other than that it's awesome. It's really easy change it around, and I can go from a full face street helmet to a dirt bike helmet in minutes. Definitely recommended. May 13, 2013
Wht a deal I wanted a high viz helmet that I could wear for adv touring and road use. This did the trick. The helmet fits great and looks good. No complaints. May 13, 2013
great deal For a helmet thats under $150 its a steal for a stylish dual sport helmet. The only 2 complaints I have is the weight and chin strap which should be called the throat strap. Hits right on the upper adams apple and lets you know. Even if the comfort straps were just a hair longer it would be a world of diff. My first day I rode for 2 hrs and I wanted a lighter helmet. Wind buffet isnt too bad but you definitely know it has a visor even at 40mph. Overall for the price I really cant complain. May 8, 2013

I have a medium sized afx fx-39 helmet. The cheek pads are way to tight. Would a large or xl size cheek pad fit a medium size helmet and would one of those sizes reduce the pressure in the cheeks. Or do I need to go to a small size cheek pad?

This helmet looks really great but I am concerned with my ability to change the visor during a ride. Do you need a screw driver just to change the visor? Is it something that could be done on the side of the road? Being able to change from a tinted visor to a clear one at night is crucial for me. Thanks.

Answer:
Under normal circumstances a "flat-head" or "slotted" screw driver is the method of choice for removing the face shield. On the fly, however, a quarter can be just as effective at removing the screws.

Answer:
You need to remove three screws using the supplied plastic screwdriver tool to take the peak off, then remove two rings from either side of the visor to remove it (I found I needed needle nose pliers to do this), before popping the rings back in either side of the new visor then replacing the screws/peak etc. I found I needed to sit down somewhere to do this properly and it would take me about ten minutes. You have to be careful not to lose any bits while you're doing it too. A pain in the *** pretty much.

The visor is pretty difficult to change, they didn't make it easy. There are these circular clips that hold the visor the helmet, but they can easily break. I wouldn't recommend it for someone like yourself who might want to constantly change or alter the visors.

Answer:
I would not recommend trying to switch visors on the road. The helmet has a few small delicate parts that like to get lost when changing. The replacement visors do not offer as great of a seal as the factory does but it won't kill you. Also if changing the visor, buying the replacement parts for the visor workings is a good idea. They are very inexpensive and it's better to have them and not need them, than need them and not have them.

The visor is kind of a pain in the butt unfortunately.... Yes you would need a screwdriver. There's also some small plastic clips you need to take out. So you'd need something tiny to pry those out with. I'm always afraid im going to break them too. You probably don't care for an answer anymore though, seeing you asked 10 months ago i'm sure you've made a decision. It would definitely be a pain to change on the side of the road though... especially in the dark.

I would recommend changing it at home. You could use a quarter to take out the screws, but there is a litttle grommet piece that you might loose on the ground on the side of the road. The mirrored visor was dark, but not too dark for me to ride in at night. YMMV

Answer:
The screws are plastic so if you crash, it will break off and not get snagged and break your neck. Anyway, the helmet comes with a small plastic screwdriver like tool to remove the beak without destroying the screws which will happen if you use a metal screwdriver. Once you get the beak off, the faceshield is easy to swap. Just FYI, there are black plastic washer things that popped off when I took the beak off and that I nearly lost, but other than that, it's pretty easy and self-explanatory.

I cannot abide the Shoei Hornet's visor screws snapping off any longer. They cost $10 a set and eventually the attachment point gets buggered digging the snapped end out.

Not having a Pinlock to fit this is really going make the decision hard here in Seattle though.

Answer:
I don't have Scott 87 OTG goggles, but I do have this helmet and I don't think the face shield would close over any goggles at all. You remove the faceshield when you are using goggles.

Keep in mind that the process of getting the faceshield on and off is a hassle and takes at least a few minutes (not seconds). For me, I removed the faceshield completely and just use the helmet with goggles only. I have a different helmet I use when street riding, and I only use this helmet for off-road stuff.

this may seem like a silly question, but my question is how hot does it get in the helmet? I am thinking about buying this helmet to use as a bicycle helmet. i have a motorycle and can use it a passenger helmet, but i figure i can use this for riding my bicycle as well. I figure riding my bike i probably wont get faster then 20 or so MPH so i was wondering about the heat in the helmet at a standstill or slow speeds. im not trying to put a sweatbox on my head. i figure nice bike helmets go for about $60+ so why not check out a helmet i can use for both motorycle and bike riding. thanks.

With the visor up, you'll have no issues with ventilation. At stop lights, I always open it up to breathe better. Moving at any speed is plenty of air flow to keep from over heating even with the visor down. on a scale of one to ten for helmet ventilation this one is definitely a 10

Answer:
I didn't think it was a silly question until you said you might wear it on a bicycle. I'm a cyclist myself and I would definitely not wear this on my bicycle because it's much heavier than a normal bicycle helmet. Among motorcycle helmets it's not too heavy, but it pales in comparison to any bicycle helmet. But to answer your question, it has pretty good airflow even at low speeds especially with the visor up. I rode with it in 90+ degree weather recently and even at slow urban speeds or at lights the heat never bothered me. Unless you're planning on serious accidents, I wouldn't recommend it for bicycling. I ride a Specialized Allez Compact Sport and a Ducati Monster just FYI.

Answer:
In terms of road motorcycle helmets, this flows a good amount of air and feels relatively cool in hot temps. However, I'd recommend a motocross helmet if you are looking for something that would be used predominantly for a bicycle with occasional motorcycle use. They tend to be cooler and lighter in my opinion (though they don't have the visor).

This is a light helmet, but it's still much heavier and bulkier than a bicycle helmet. You would be sweaty. The vents are good, but I doubt they are good enough to keep you cool at 20 mph while you are pedalling hard.

I currently have a Shark Evoline 2 Medium which fits well. What size would be equivalent for FX-39?

Answer:
The Evoline fits large, as does the AFX FX-39. I would guess that you are the same size, but definitely check the size chart with your head measurement.

Answer:
I found AFX to be true to most other helmet brands' sizing. I wear a SM in Shoei, Arai and Shark and a small was perfect in the AFX-39 also.

Answer:
My second AFX DS helmet (37 & 39), the fit of the 39 is much better being more oval than round but I find the AFX sizing chart completely wrong for my head/face features. My head measures 61cm, upper end of large per AFX, I found though that teh XL is too tight, creates a pressure point after an hour on the forehead, so 2XL which is what I wear in AFX (DS), HJC (dirt & street), and Bell (dirt), Take into consideration if you wear a balaclava etc.

Answer:
I'd bet you would be good with a small. The interior lining on the FX-39 is very thin, giving it a slightly larger size feel

Answer:
Any gloss finish will clean easier than a matte one. The matte finishes are more porous and will trap more dirt.

so far mine is very easy to clean and have not noticed any blemishes showing up any more than other finishes I've owned. I really like the matte black...

Answer:
The matte black is really sharp looking and it will go with just about any gear or bike. I think it also is a little bit cooler then the gloss finish.

I don't really care if my helmet gets dirty, but I haven't had any trouble cleaning the matte black finish. It still looks like new after 300 miles.

Answer:
That is a bit of a controversial question. Some say it is more difficult to keep clean. As someone who owns a couple of matte black helmets as well as a matte black superbike I would say the finish is no more difficult to KEEP clean than any other helmet. To CLEAN one of these helmets is actually a little bit easier than other helmets since you DO NOT use any chemicals to clean the surface. simply use a warm, wet wash cloth and thats really about it (sometimes some none abrasive soaps to get rid of bugs). no coating it anything like water repellents or solvents. my helmets are kept immaculate. No scrubbing = no scratching.
