It is a very low priced helmet, can't compare to ones costing hundreds of dollars more. But for the price it is good. I wouldn't use it for street only, or for high speed riding. But for speeds under 50mph on the street 40% of the time, and 60% trails and dirt roads where I am going 25mph or less, I consider it good.
Pro's: Cheap, light, good ventilation, can put on faceshield OR goggles.
Con's: face opening is a wee bit small for good goggle fit; ventilation could be even better. chin strap is a little tiny bit to close to windpipe, could use a little more (and more firm) cushioning foam in the inner liner. Face shield removal requires removing FIVE bolts.
Yes, I recommend this product.

I decided on this helmet after comparing it to the Fly Racing Trekker. I research a product extensively before buying, and found the only negative reviews to be from those that ordered their normal size. If you follow the AFX chart you'll be fine. I got a medium instead of a large. The cheek pads were a bit snug at first (I'm on the upper end of a M), but have formed nicely to my head now. I get compliments from both street and dirt riders on the styling.

The AFX FX-39 Dual Sport Helmet feels light. The ratcheting closure strap is really cool. You can get it on & off with gloves on without any difficulty.
I really like the adjustable visor and face shield positioning.
Ventilation is good even at slow speeds.

One could spend multiple times the price of this dual sport helmet and not get a great deal more in comfort, features or safety rating. The fit out of the box was properly snug and it broke in with about a day's riding. It flows air very well even at low speeds on the trails. It has good vision all around and does not hinder head movement when working through tight trail obstacles. The sun visor could be a little longer for riding into the sunset, and the padding cut thinner at the temples for sunglass insertion. Overall this is a very good helmet for the money and I get a lot of positive comments on how it looks too.

Well since I haven't smashed my head on anything while wearing this helmet I can only speak to its comfort and value. This was actually the second helmet I received because the first one was one size too large - I watched the video and measured twice and ended up too large (XL) so this review is for slze L. Compared to other large helmets lying around the house this one is slightly on the large side but with the buckle fully tightened it fits correctly. I was having airflow problems (fogging goggles) on some slower trails that was fixed when I opened the front vents. Goggles fit well with this helmet and the visor closes fine over the strap.
Value wise I couldn't be happier. This seems like a great helmet for the price if you're not spending tons of time on the highway.

this helmet is amazing, I love the feature where the visor clicks half hay to allow air flow. My only concern is that when i move the visor, it makes this nasty cracking sound and it bends on the left side. probabaly going to have to unscrew it to see what the problem is, other than that, it fits a little smaller than it should, i was suppost to get a small but i got a medium and it fits snug, i also bought a large but I havent gotten it yet to say how that fits

This helmet looks really great but I am concerned with my ability to change the visor during a ride. Do you need a screw driver just to change the visor? Is it something that could be done on the side of the road? Being able to change from a tinted visor to a clear one at night is crucial for me. Thanks.

Answer:
Under normal circumstances a "flat-head" or "slotted" screw driver is the method of choice for removing the face shield. On the fly, however, a quarter can be just as effective at removing the screws.

I cannot abide the Shoei Hornet's visor screws snapping off any longer. They cost $10 a set and eventually the attachment point gets buggered digging the snapped end out.

Not having a Pinlock to fit this is really going make the decision hard here in Seattle though.

this may seem like a silly question, but my question is how hot does it get in the helmet? I am thinking about buying this helmet to use as a bicycle helmet. i have a motorycle and can use it a passenger helmet, but i figure i can use this for riding my bicycle as well. I figure riding my bike i probably wont get faster then 20 or so MPH so i was wondering about the heat in the helmet at a standstill or slow speeds. im not trying to put a sweatbox on my head. i figure nice bike helmets go for about $60+ so why not check out a helmet i can use for both motorycle and bike riding. thanks.

This is a light helmet, but it's still much heavier and bulkier than a bicycle helmet. You would be sweaty. The vents are good, but I doubt they are good enough to keep you cool at 20 mph while you are pedalling hard.

Its warm for an off road only helmet really need higher speed to make the vents work.

Answer:
Any gloss finish will clean easier than a matte one. The matte finishes are more porous and will trap more dirt.

The matte black is really sharp looking and it will go with just about any gear or bike. I think it also is a little bit cooler then the gloss finish.

I don't really care if my helmet gets dirty, but I haven't had any trouble cleaning the matte black finish. It still looks like new after 300 miles.

Answer:
That is a bit of a controversial question. Some say it is more difficult to keep clean. As someone who owns a couple of matte black helmets as well as a matte black superbike I would say the finish is no more difficult to KEEP clean than any other helmet. To CLEAN one of these helmets is actually a little bit easier than other helmets since you DO NOT use any chemicals to clean the surface. simply use a warm, wet wash cloth and thats really about it (sometimes some none abrasive soaps to get rid of bugs). no coating it anything like water repellents or solvents. my helmets are kept immaculate. No scrubbing = no scratching.

If your head is neutral/slightly round like mine, I'd go with a LARGE size. I'm 59cm and ordered the MEDIUM one, as per guidelines, but it was too tight. Had to exchange it.

Answer:
I have had this for a few weeks and the sunglasses I use are a tiny bit difficult to put on and lift a bit. But it is not too bad. I think you just need to find a good matching sun glass that works.

I have a modular helmet too and putting the glasses on is a breeze on those.

Answer:
Smaller glasses may fit, and there wouldn't be a problem with distance from your glasses to the shield, but the shape of the helmet doesn't seem ideal for glasses. Narrower, less round profile.

Answer:
It depends on how wide and square the corner of your glasses are. The helmet padding is designed to hug your cheeks comfortably. I personally use Nike wrap-around (sun)glasses with straight temples, and they are comfortable but snug. If you have regular eyeglasses, I would honestly recommend contact lenses, as helmets properly fitted are desiged to absorb impact energy from the impact point to your helmet. If you go loose enough to comfortably fit eyeglasses, you might be loosening the helmet and working against the protective intention of it. You never want a loose helmet, especially god forbid you take a tumble.

Also, the FX-39 helmets run slightly large, so I had to downsize to a Medium after I purchased my normal large size.

I dont wear regular glasses, but I can tell you cheap sunglasses with thick plastic frames kind of hurt when putting on, but I would think thin metal frames would be fine. Then again Im still breaking in the thing so it should be ok soon.

Answer:
i've tried slipping sunglasses on while wearing the helmet and the grooves tend to keep my glasses up off my nose. There are channels for the arms to slide into the helmet making it easy to put on/take off glasses, but where they sit is slightly uncomfortable for me.
