AFX FX-39 Dual Sport Camo Helmet 4.4 5 252 252
High Value So far this helmet has proven comfortable and functional. It doesn't hurt that one looks like the Master Chief while wearing it. I use it for dual-sport riding with an off-road emphasis. As such, the good airflow that this helmet provides is very welcome. Not having to monkey with goggles is a real plus. June 10, 2013
Killer Value Awesome helmet for the price-- actually, just an awesome helmet. I went ahead and bought the mirror visor as well, and the install was quick and easy. While it isn't a quick-detach visor system, it was still very easy. The only 'tool' I needed was a quarter. Good helmet, stylish, great finish. Get one before they go up in price! June 10, 2013
Great helmet, why I dont buy it sooner. Been riding in the streets with my motocross helmet for the last 20 years,WOW,what a difference.Much better in every sense. June 10, 2013
Good entry price. If it was $120 or more I'd pass. I've owned a Scorpion Exo 700 size Medium for several years and it is a nice fit. My AFX is also a Medium but it is slightly more snug than I'd like. My ears just barely touch the uncovered lining and my nose is tickled by the guard. I love the clip action of the neck strap but it does sit kind of far back so it just rubs on my neck. If they moved this up 2mm I would be much happier with the helmet. But I do have a somewhat stalky build so others might not have the issue with it touching their neck. Overall it's a decent package with several air vents and better airflow than my Scorpion. If you teeter on the bigger side of medium, then buy a large. June 10, 2013
Excellent Hybrid Lid Having been burnt on a Joe Rocket Hybrid that was just a bit too big, this AFX fits like it should.. The only thing that's a bit weird is the void around the ears. I'm used to some sort of pressure against my ears when I wear a helmet, and with this there's nothing.. Not a problem, just different. June 10, 2013
Great Helmet for the money but just a few flaws I have only ridden with this helmet a dozen times but I really like it. Twice I rode with it during a flash flood warning type of downpour - and it did fin no leaking. The helmet looks dope, it feels good - the cheek pads could be a little bigger - this would help with the noise. Vision is really good - the faceshield is very clear and a nice thick plastic - not the best seal when all the way down but definitely reasonable for a $100 helmet. Really the only problem I have with this helmet is the face shield clicks - in other words there are three positions - all the way up, in the middle and all the way down. All the way up up and down are fine but the only other option is right in the middle - the face shield is so thick that it distorts the road and blocks your vision when it is in the "middle" position - this pretty much makes it worthless. It fogs up pretty quick so they really should have had a half inch open position to handle the fogging... Besides that the helmet rocks and has a really nice feel to it. I have a 58 cm head oval head and the medium fit me fine - the cheek pads could be a little bigger but it is fine. June 9, 2013
awesome product for the price for an entry level helmet I am in love. The helmet fits my head as it should and gives me a fantastic field of view while riding. No complaints. June 4, 2013
Great helmet at a great price! I originally ordered this helmet in size XL because my head size was in between L/XL. Once receiving I realived I should have gone down a size and ordered a L. No big deal. The folks at revzilla returned my XL and sent out a L the same day. June 3, 2013

This helmet looks really great but I am concerned with my ability to change the visor during a ride. Do you need a screw driver just to change the visor? Is it something that could be done on the side of the road? Being able to change from a tinted visor to a clear one at night is crucial for me. Thanks.

Under normal circumstances a "flat-head" or "slotted" screw driver is the method of choice for removing the face shield. On the fly, however, a quarter can be just as effective at removing the screws.

Answer:
You need to remove three screws using the supplied plastic screwdriver tool to take the peak off, then remove two rings from either side of the visor to remove it (I found I needed needle nose pliers to do this), before popping the rings back in either side of the new visor then replacing the screws/peak etc. I found I needed to sit down somewhere to do this properly and it would take me about ten minutes. You have to be careful not to lose any bits while you're doing it too. A pain in the *** pretty much.

The visor is pretty difficult to change, they didn't make it easy. There are these circular clips that hold the visor the helmet, but they can easily break. I wouldn't recommend it for someone like yourself who might want to constantly change or alter the visors.

Answer:
I would not recommend trying to switch visors on the road. The helmet has a few small delicate parts that like to get lost when changing. The replacement visors do not offer as great of a seal as the factory does but it won't kill you. Also if changing the visor, buying the replacement parts for the visor workings is a good idea. They are very inexpensive and it's better to have them and not need them, than need them and not have them.

The visor is kind of a pain in the butt unfortunately.... Yes you would need a screwdriver. There's also some small plastic clips you need to take out. So you'd need something tiny to pry those out with. I'm always afraid im going to break them too. You probably don't care for an answer anymore though, seeing you asked 10 months ago i'm sure you've made a decision. It would definitely be a pain to change on the side of the road though... especially in the dark.

I would recommend changing it at home. You could use a quarter to take out the screws, but there is a litttle grommet piece that you might loose on the ground on the side of the road. The mirrored visor was dark, but not too dark for me to ride in at night. YMMV

Answer:
The screws are plastic so if you crash, it will break off and not get snagged and break your neck. Anyway, the helmet comes with a small plastic screwdriver like tool to remove the beak without destroying the screws which will happen if you use a metal screwdriver. Once you get the beak off, the faceshield is easy to swap. Just FYI, there are black plastic washer things that popped off when I took the beak off and that I nearly lost, but other than that, it's pretty easy and self-explanatory.

I cannot abide the Shoei Hornet's visor screws snapping off any longer. They cost $10 a set and eventually the attachment point gets buggered digging the snapped end out.

Not having a Pinlock to fit this is really going make the decision hard here in Seattle though.

Answer:
I don't have Scott 87 OTG goggles, but I do have this helmet and I don't think the face shield would close over any goggles at all. You remove the faceshield when you are using goggles.

Keep in mind that the process of getting the faceshield on and off is a hassle and takes at least a few minutes (not seconds). For me, I removed the faceshield completely and just use the helmet with goggles only. I have a different helmet I use when street riding, and I only use this helmet for off-road stuff.

this may seem like a silly question, but my question is how hot does it get in the helmet? I am thinking about buying this helmet to use as a bicycle helmet. i have a motorycle and can use it a passenger helmet, but i figure i can use this for riding my bicycle as well. I figure riding my bike i probably wont get faster then 20 or so MPH so i was wondering about the heat in the helmet at a standstill or slow speeds. im not trying to put a sweatbox on my head. i figure nice bike helmets go for about $60+ so why not check out a helmet i can use for both motorycle and bike riding. thanks.

Answer:
I've tried this helmet briefly in 90 degree florida heat and 100% humidity. This helmet was quite cool with the visor up. However, you need to keep moving with the visor down for the vents to provide enough airflow to keep you cool.

I would say that this helmet is hotter than a motocross style helmet unless you're moving.

The helmet provides a lot of airflow, so it's actually much cooler than any of my other motorcycle helmets. That being said, it is on the heavy side. It doesn't bother me for motorcycles, but it could become an issue for you on a bike.

Answer:
I wouldn't mix bike and moto helmets. This is just going on the fact that my bicycle helmet stinks...

The helmet is quite cool. Definitely cooler than your average street helmet. There is a huge gap between my chin and the front of the helmet so this helps with cooling. Lots of vents. But still these vents are designed to work at 20-75 mph so you would barely be hitting the speeds that it was designed to be used.

If you are going to mix Moto and bike helmets you might want something that is a moto X helmet like http://www.revzilla.com/product/afx-fx-17-helmet

They are probably designed to keep you cooler when going 15 - 50 mph and you are working harder physically.

Answer:
With the visor up, you'll have no issues with ventilation. At stop lights, I always open it up to breathe better. Moving at any speed is plenty of air flow to keep from over heating even with the visor down. on a scale of one to ten for helmet ventilation this one is definitely a 10

Answer:
I didn't think it was a silly question until you said you might wear it on a bicycle. I'm a cyclist myself and I would definitely not wear this on my bicycle because it's much heavier than a normal bicycle helmet. Among motorcycle helmets it's not too heavy, but it pales in comparison to any bicycle helmet. But to answer your question, it has pretty good airflow even at low speeds especially with the visor up. I rode with it in 90+ degree weather recently and even at slow urban speeds or at lights the heat never bothered me. Unless you're planning on serious accidents, I wouldn't recommend it for bicycling. I ride a Specialized Allez Compact Sport and a Ducati Monster just FYI.

Answer:
In terms of road motorcycle helmets, this flows a good amount of air and feels relatively cool in hot temps. However, I'd recommend a motocross helmet if you are looking for something that would be used predominantly for a bicycle with occasional motorcycle use. They tend to be cooler and lighter in my opinion (though they don't have the visor).

Answer:
This is a light helmet, but it's still much heavier and bulkier than a bicycle helmet. You would be sweaty. The vents are good, but I doubt they are good enough to keep you cool at 20 mph while you are pedalling hard.

Answer:
It's much heavier than a bicycle helmet. And will be much warmer as well.

Its warm for an off road only helmet really need higher speed to make the vents work.

Answer:
The Evoline fits large, as does the AFX FX-39. I would guess that you are the same size, but definitely check the size chart with your head measurement.

Answer:
Use the sizing chart to compare the two. Example if a shark medium is a 60cm and that is a large in FX then go large...

Answer:
I found AFX to be true to most other helmet brands' sizing. I wear a SM in Shoei, Arai and Shark and a small was perfect in the AFX-39 also.

Answer:
My second AFX DS helmet (37 & 39), the fit of the 39 is much better being more oval than round but I find the AFX sizing chart completely wrong for my head/face features. My head measures 61cm, upper end of large per AFX, I found though that teh XL is too tight, creates a pressure point after an hour on the forehead, so 2XL which is what I wear in AFX (DS), HJC (dirt & street), and Bell (dirt), Take into consideration if you wear a balaclava etc.

Answer:
I'd bet you would be good with a small. The interior lining on the FX-39 is very thin, giving it a slightly larger size feel
