AFX FX-140 Modular Helmet 4.1 5 114 114
Fantastic Winter helmet.. with a few quirks This is a fantastic helmet overall. I love the design and it is very comfortable. The only thing I don't like is that the deployable sunshield never goes all the way up, it hangs a little in your vision and is annoying. The padding is good and comfortable however the skull padding and cheek padding don't seem to compare perfectly; the skull padding fits looser than the cheeks. The seal around your head and under your chin is very good and makes it quiet. This is definitely a WINTER helmet; the strong seal and lowish airflow do not suit summer riding well but will keep you warm in the winter. Other reviews comment on the quality being lesser but I have found that not to be the case. I will be buying another one of these when It needs replacing, I do wish it had a bit more airflow though. Seems very light for a modular helmet. Looks fantastic with the silver mirror face shield. October 10, 2015
Great price, comfortable, but poor quality control As of writing this review, I have used this helmet for just over one month. My rides range from only 50 miles on days I work and upwards of 500 to 1000 miles on the weekends when I want a change of scenery. The helmet has a great fit for me. Some reviewers recommend going the next size up, but the sizing chart was spot on in my case. The helmet was a tad snug at first, but within the week was broken in enough to be a near perfect fit. I guess it would depend on your specific head shape. Airflow is definitely lacking. There have been more than a few occasions where I thought my vents were closed, only to discover they were indeed open. At speed airflow is acceptable, but in slow traffic on a hot day it's almost a requirement to open the visor or flip up the face shield itself to not feel like you're drowning in a pool of sweat or suffocating in a hot-box. It's more quiet than my SS1500 or my HJC CL-17. Both of those helmets were like wearing a wind tunnel on my head even at street speed, but the Highway was an absolute nightmare leading to frustration and fatigue. A 500 mile trip to Sacramento had my ears ringing for a good three weeks. The FX-140 isn't super quiet, but I can ride around town without developing a headache. Noise at speed is still a problem, but I now wear (and recommend for others) earplugs whenever I'm going to be on the Highway for more than a few minutes. So that's a non-issue in my book. If you ride without plugs, don't expect the helmet to be quiet by any definition. The modular face shield makes quick trips into stores or gas stations a breeze; gone for me are the days of having to remove my helmet just to put it back on a minute or two later. It also makes talking to others convenient by just flipping up the face shield and not having to yell through the helmet if the environment is loud (at red lights for example). This convenience alone makes the purchase worth it. While a minor problem that I don't think would lead to any issues with the helmet's protective ability; quality control was unnerving in my experience. I'm not making a claim to their overall inspection process but to completely miss something like this, it does make me question their overall inspection process. My face shield wasn't seated properly, making the shield very difficult to open without spreading the cheeks with a hand while opening. Initially I thought maybe the screws holding the shield to the helmet itself were loose. After taking the vanity covers off of the side, I found the screws to be snug as I would expect, but the right side was still sticking out about a quarter of an inch, so I dug deeper only to find that the smaller right-side screw that pushes the visor away from the helmet was not only stripped (the head, not the thread), it wasn't even screwed in. The screw, small plastic arm, and the spring they hold in place fell into my lap immediately as I detached the visor. This is unacceptable in my book, but I was able to use a thin flat-head screwdriver to force the stripped screw into the brass nut enough to fix my issues until I have time to search out a higher grade screw to replace the stock screws. I have uploaded some photos showing what I am referring to. Pictures of the pieces falling out not included, for some reason I didn't think of taking a picture at that point. Over all I'm still very pleased with this helmet. But annoyed at the face shield seating issue. At $115, you cannot beat the value. September 7, 2015
nice helmet for and entry level helmet , its worth its weight in gold. could have more air flow though! August 31, 2015
Great helmet This is the second time my wife and I bought this particular helmet. We like the wide range of vision and the modular function. The flip down visor is great and easy to get to. The only thing I think that could have been done a bit better is the airflow. I live in a hot climate and the airflow seems to be just a bit restricted, but it wasn't enough to keep me from buying the helmet for a second time. My first one lasted about three years before the interior started to become worn out. I would recommend this helmet to a friend. July 20, 2015
Fits ok Quality appears good. Lots of padding. Features are ok July 20, 2015
Great Value Overall: Fits good. But- do buy the next size UP from what you would. Great air flow. Love the easily deployed inner " Fighter-Pilot" smoked shield. This unit is the orange/tangerine HiViz color. STANDS out for sure- just what I wanted. For the $$$$$ hard to beat! August 3, 2015
Great introductory helmet. Love the features I bought this helmet and was loving life. I noticed that cars no longer lurched at intersections because they saw me from a mile away. Hi viz does its job and looks good. However after a month the screw on the modular part broke and I had to get the helmet replaced through Revzilla, who were phenomenal. I just hope that does not happen again. It's a great helmet, just hoping the modular part and face shield stay in place this time. July 20, 2015
Great for the price Bought this for my wife. She loves the flip up front so she dont mess up her make-up. She also loves the flip down tint visor. Slightly heavy for her but she said shes getting used to it. Great for the price. Fits great and looks great. Its got about 600 miles on it. Some at very high speeds (100mph+) and so far is holding up great. April 27, 2015

Roger K: Read good reviews about it. It won't break the bank Nov 19, 2015
aaron b: Occasionally I ride with a more mature crowd for some light sport touring and modular style helmets are nice for talking with the other gent's at stop signs and inner sections gas stations and those types of situations. My previous modular helmet was literally falling apart from prolonged use and daily commuting to work so it was time for a new lid. After a thorough search and many video reviews later I decided to try this helmet out, I will review the helmet after I try it out extensively. Oct 19, 2015

Leonardo G: well it has some really nice features and not so expensive. Besides I'm a little bit claustrophobic, so the modular helmet is a must for me. Hope it gets here by tuesday. Thanks! Nov 14, 2014

A shopper asked: How difficult is it to open the visor/vents with gloves on? Jul 8, 2014
Answer this · Send to friends Good question? Yes (0) No (0)
Marcus V: The top vents have not been an issue at all with gloves. However my gloved hands do occasionally slip off of the smaller and thin tab for the front vent. The visor can be difficult when opening, with my gloved fingers slipping similar to the front vent tab, but closing has yet to be a problem. Sep 7, 2015

J. Luis V: Both me and my wife didn't have any problem at all, opening or closing the vents or the shield, far we are happy with the helmets. Just don't expect a large amount of air entering. Jul 8, 2014

Joseph C: The visor opens and closes with gloves on without a problem, the vents are smaller tabs and depending on how your gloves fit may or may not adjust with ease. Jul 8, 2014

Michael P: I wear glasses as well. When I bought mine a few years ago, I had the opportunity to try a few on first. I went with a LG instead of an XL. I put the helmet on with the chin raised and it goes over my glasses fine. Then I lower the chin piece and its arch does not hit my glasses. Jun 15, 2015

A shopper asked: How do you replace the face shield?? I want to install a anti-fog insert. Thanx. Oct 20, 2013
Answer this · Send to friends Good question? Yes (0) No (0)
Marcus V: You have to remove the two vanity plates on the side of the helmet. They are locked into place with two L tabs each. Simply pull them up and they will snap out of place. My first time doing this, I thought they were going to break. You may have an easier time with a thin flat-head screwdriver to push the L tabs inward while prying the plates up with your free hand. The visor itself is then locked in place with a flat-head screw. Remove the screw and pull the black round locking mechanism out of its space. The visor will slip right off without issue. Installation is reverse. Do be mindful of the teeth on the black round locking mechanism and the direction they face when removing or you may not be able to open/close your visor completely if not installed the same way. Simply pop the vanity plates back into place. Sep 7, 2015

A S asked: I need a new helmet for a long trip I'm about to take . Locally I do not have many choices . Every helmet fits feels different hard to buy over internet . I tried on a scorpion EXO900X Large was very tight , XL felt good. How would this AFX size up with this comparison ? Feb 28, 2015
Answer this · Send to friends Good question? Yes (0) No (0)
Marcus V: The sizing chart was spot-on for me. Keep in mind that you do want the helmet to fit a bit tight, as the padding will break in with use and naturally loosen up for a more relaxed fit. A new helmet that fits loose, will eventually be very loose with use. Sep 7, 2015

David M: I bought a large when I got my bike. It was a little loose so I got a medium, and it fits great. I guess I have an average size head. Good luck. Feb 28, 2015
