Vololights Brakeless Deceleration Indicator Videos

Vololights License Plate Frame

When it comes to slowing down, motorcyclists do not always use their brakes. This can cause a potentially dangerous situation for drivers/riders behind you who are watching your lights and not your speed. Vololights solves this problem by detecting deceleration by any means via a 3 axis accelerometer. Whether you are using engine braking, downshifting or simply applying the brakes Vololights senses the change and speed and communicates your rate of deceleration to fellow drivers/riders through variable flashing brake lights, giving a clear indication of the urgency with which you are slowing down. So whether you are downshifting to take a turn or slamming on the brakes to avoid hitting a turtle, Vololights has your back.

Nice added safety feature
I ride a Tuono V4R, before installing the VL cars would get dangerously close to my tail when engine braking. My wife once was following me in the car, and she too got scared because she did not pick up fast enough how rapidly the bike slows down when just engine braking. I normally hit the brake lever a couple of times to flash the back light and signal that I'm slowing down, but this is not overly safe, so I decided to give the VL a try.

Installation was pretty easy, I used the no-longer-necessary license plate light to power up the unit. The only thing I would complain about is that the description of the expected light flashing patterns during installation is not too clear in the instructions. Basically you should:
- insert the plate in the VL, close the top, pull the wiring through and connect it to the bike
- power up the unit, still not bolted on to the bike plate holder
- put it in a vertical position
- tilt up, you will see the intermittent slow flash, alternating between top and bottom light
- keep tilting up to a horizontal position
- at a certain point the flashing pattern will change to a fast one
- if you are able to see both patterns, you're good.

When you're done with this, turn the bike power off, and install the plate firmly to your bike. At this point, you're ready for calibration. Here's what the instructions missed in my opinion: when you are ready to calibrate, you put the bike on a flat surface and hold it vertically, turn the power on, and the lights will start flashing rapidly. This is ok, it's just an indication that you need to do the first setup using the magnet. I did not understand this from the instructions and thought that something was wrong. I was not expecting any flashing at all, this threw me off. All is good, follow the instructions, use the magnet, and you're good to go.

Cars are staying further away from me now, this is excellent.
Instructions aside, the product works well, highly recommended.

Cars backs away from me..
Before installing this product, I noticed that cars behind comes real close to me when stopping.. Now, I can see that they are slowing down and moving further away every time I decelerate without hitting the brakes.

It just takes time for me to figure out how to make it in stealth mode. I followed the instructions many times and it seems like it did not go through stealth mode. so I give up and kept it into default settings. but ill try to play with it next time

What matter is... it's working.

Installing is not that bad. you may need to shave the plate a little bit for it to fit. other than that. its working.

Easy to install on 2015 FJ09
So far so good. The install was a piece of cake. The connectors provided are excellent and super easy (FJ09 Blue is positive black is ground). I have not seen how it looks from off the bike, but after three days with it commuting 56 miles a day, I have seen people giving me more space than normal. If nothing else, it allows me to spend less time in the rear views than ahead of me. Of course nothing is fool proof and a couple of distracted drivers have come close, but that is unavoidable. It is not a replacement for personal awareness.

Easy to install, works great!
I just installed a Vololight on my wife's 2013 BMW F700GS and my 2016 BMW R1200GS. Took me less then 2-hours to do both bikes. Access to the 700GS rear license plate light wiring is pretty straight forward. Under the rear fender, unscrew the plastic cover over the tail light wiring. This gives added access and clearance to tap into the license plate lights.
The 1200GS is a bit more tricky but not hard. Dropping the plastic frame (2-torx screws) holding the rear brake light, turning lights, and license plate light gives you enough room to feed the two Vololight wires up and under the rear seat so the Vololight wires can easily tap in to the license plate light wiring near the canbus. I did check w/ my BMW dealer to confirm which colored wires are for the license plate light. Suggest you do the same.
Calibration of each light was easy. Certainly increases visibility on the road!
Before buying the lights from Reveilla I did email to/fro w/ Vololights to confirm the lights would work on each bike. They were super responsive!

Works as advertised
Of course safety is in the hands of the rider but this device does enhance visibility and I do feel some of the cagers are backing off. I feel it was a good investment and I have had no issues with the quality of the product.

Installation on 2010 BMW R1200GS
Installation on my GS was straightforward. The instructions said to tap into the license plate light circuit but that was not possible. Since I already had a six circuit fuse block mounted under the seat it was very easy to extend the oem wires through the tail section to the fuse block and terminate with a 5 amp fuse. I mounted my iPhone to the rear rack with a RAM mount and pointed it at the Vololight to verify the light was working as advertised by taking video and braking under different forces. The light pattern worked as expected with no further calibration or tweaking needed.

Does work!
It does work. I believe it irritates some of the drivers behind me sometimes. Essentially in Massachusetts it is illegal if you follow the state law. It does the job however. Will see.

I friend of mine bought this and highly recommends it. He says he notices that other vehicles giving him more space when slowing down or letting of the throttle. My friend also gave me a brief presentation at our works parking lot, and I was sold immediately. I feel this is a product all riders should have. Anything that adds to the safety of riding I feel is a good thing.

I use my engine brake a lot, even when riding in traffic, and I see cars behind me coming too close. I usually hit the brakes lightly a couple of times just to flash the back light. I like knowing that this product will do the work for me, because who knows, I might forget to tap on my brakes just when I happen to have a distracted cager behind me. Extra lights also don't hurt.

After you come to a stop are the Red LED's still on?
Kevin S on Oct 13, 2014
BEST ANSWER: Kevin S, Jesse from Vololights here.

Vololights will stay on for as long as the deceleration event is occurring plus two seconds after. If an acceleration event is measured at any point, the lights will turn off immediately.
Will this work on the 2014 BMW F700? Saw some issues with working with the canbus sytem.
Paul M on Jul 23, 2015
BEST ANSWER: I installed vololights on a 2007 R1200RT. You can't wire it to a non-switched hot wire because it will always stay on. I got a Y adapter for my rear powerlet, I connected the single end to the powerlet hot line (which is off when the bike is off), One of the Y leads back on to the powerlet, and stripped the other Y lead and soldered it to the vololight power lead. Worked great. Got the Y adapter from my BMW dealer (it's made to put additional powerlets on)

Does this cause all break lights to flash during deceleration or only the lights that are on the plate frame?
A shopper on Jul 13, 2015
BEST ANSWER: Only the lights on the frame. There are two wires, +12VDC and Ground. You are specifically instructed NOT to tap into the brake lights wiring, since the unit needs to power on, and stay running so it knows when to signal deceleration. Since the unit is not connected to the regular brake lights in any way, it will not flash the regular brake lights.
Will it work on a 2015 Vespa Primavera?
A shopper on Oct 7, 2014
BEST ANSWER: Jesse from Vololights here.

A great resource is the 3rd product image on the Revzilla page that shows actual dimensions of the product.

While it is difficult to confirm individual motorcycles, from stock images of the Primavera it appears there is enough clearance above the fender to fit.
Will the vololights brakes decelerator indicator fit and work on my 2014 VStar deluxe.?
A C on May 5, 2016
BEST ANSWER: The license plate will, only use the existing wire from license plate light. Instructions are good, take your time you should be fine. If you are refering to the unit that wires into existing lights, you need to check into compatability. Vololights site has enough information to make a logical choice,
Will this work with a 2014 Can-Am Spyder ST-S Limited?
Gregory S on Aug 31, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Can't see why not. The unit is totally self contained with embedded accelerometers. Just provide a ignition switched 12v power supply. The manufacturer recommends using the license plate light power lead as the unit has it's own plate light. Just remember to align the accelorometers using the supplied magnet during initial installation.
Will this fit on the 2015 Suzuki Boulevard S40?
Priscilla L on Sep 16, 2015
BEST ANSWER: YES this is a great simple easy way to help drivers to wake up and notice that your bike is slowing. I think the plate on your zuch is below your brake lamp an should be easy to access and will be very visible. Ride Safe
