Velomacchi Roll-Top Backpack 28L

To break out into the universe of premium moto luggage, Velomacchi took a concept, then made it better, then better, then better still. In its simplest form, the 28 liter capacity Roll-Top Backpack is a bomb-proof motorcycle-specific pack with a waterproof main compartment. Upon closer inspection however, it is far from humble. The shoulder harness system features freely rotational elements to accommodate riders big and small without any restrictions. The harness system joins in the middle with a unique magnetically-assisted clasp that features a CNC machined aluminum release knob. The right chest harness strap has a plastic surface for mounting action camera hardware. The roll top main closure is also magnetically assisted and the length adjustable strap secures neatly with an aluminum hook. The bag supports hydration bladders and there's centrally mounted aluminum carabiner for tethering your helmet.

Features:

  • Water-tight main compartment with magnetic roll top closure
  • Patent pending 3-point rotating harness system
  • Magnetic sternum coupler for hands free harness closure
  • 1000d competition fabric: water proof, abrasion resistant and stable at high speed
  • Ballistic quilted back panel with tuck away shoulder straps
  • Water-tight quick access front pockets with toggle closures
  • Emergency contact information and key pocket
  • Hydration sleeve compatible (bladder not included)
  • Quick access side pocket
  • Torso size adjustment cam lock system
  • Gripping side stabilizing pads
  • Motorcycle tie down anchor points
  • Camera/accessory mounting plate
  • Tire pressure gauge elastic sleeve
  • Internal key and accessory leash
  • Aluminum hands-free helmet clip
  • 23 liter main compartment, 2.5 liter front pockets (x2)
  • 32cm W x 50cm H x 20cm D (12.5" W x 19.5" H x 8" D)

Note: Pictured GoPro and hardware sold separately.

Excellent commuter backpack, pending you travel on the lighter side
Purchased from: Velomacci.com (3 months ago)
Usage so far: 40-50 rides
Tl;Dr: Excellent style, waterproof, and worth the cost, pending it is big enough for you!

I bought this backpack back in March directly from Velomacci. When I was looking at backpacks, I wanted a more stylish alternative to the Kriega R25. I wanted something I could take to work every day that looked good, kept my laptop dry, and rode well.

Needless to say, this pack fits this bill perfectly!

So far, i've ridden over 2k miles and commuted at least 40-50 times with this pack, so although it is new to Revzilla, it is not new to me.

Waterproofing: Stellar, rode an hour through a monsoon of a storm and everything was completely dry.

Fabric: Looks great in person, however it is MUCH STIFFER than you'll expect. The outer pockets especially are quite stiff.

Size: Feels like a 20L. Plenty enough for a laptop, jacket, and some snacks. I've packed it quite full, but don't expect a huge bag. Makes a solid day pack for day rides, but you'd be hard pressed to use it as a multi-day unless you're an ultralight packer.

Chest clasp: Works as advertised. Incredibly easy to use. Makes me look like black leather iron man!

Straps: Ridden mostly city with some highway stints up to 120+mph. Rock solid at every speed. Very comfortable. Unless I over pack and ride heavy, I forget that I am wearing it. Causes no buffeting or wind variation when riding.

Outer pockets: Clasps are easy to use, but stylish. Outer pockets not listed as waterproof, yet my gear (in light rain) never got wet at all. Only could get wet through the drain holes at the bottom of the pocket. (Didn't have anything in the outer pockets on the monsoon ride)

Note to College Kids:
Don't expect it to hold a full days course load. Realistically, I could probably get a laptop, two 1" binders, and two (thin) or one(thick) textbook into the main compartment. Much more and you'd need a bigger bag.

Fun bits: Emergency card was a cool addition. The card slot works great for military as well (CAC card right in the strap slot is easily removable with gloves on at the gate). The slot for the tire pressure gauge is stellar. Been carrying one since I bought the pack and it never moves/comes loose.

Summary: If you're looking for a (mostly) waterproof pack but don't like the Kriega style, this could be your pack. Makes a great pack for people who commute to work and don't take a ton with them. Fabric is stiff. Main roll top compartment is confirmed (with vigor) to be waterproof. Easy to put on with full gear. Straps are easy to adjust on the fly with one hand.

All in all, I love this pack. I get compliments on it ALL THE TIME because it looks awesome. So far, it is standing the test of time and proving to be a quality piece of gear. For the avid commuter or adventurer, this makes an awesome day pack! Just be ready for everyone to ask what the silver circle on your chest is. XD

Great Biking Backpack
I am "Mr. Velomacchi"! I have the backpack, the duffel, and their speedway gloves. All great products that get used every day. Gear is functional and looks great. Backpack is a little small. Pricey but you are getting quality goods here.

Back pack
I own several backpacks but this one is the best by far. It's not a large bag but it is top quality. Water proof and the harness is the best I've seen. Easy getting out of and into. All you have to do is look at it and the quality is obvious. 28L is plenty big enough for my purpose. I would recommend this backpack in a heart beat.

Great pack with some issues.
I purchased this backpack to replace an A* aero tech backpack who's zippers broke after roughly 3 years of use. The idea was that I'd plop down a bunch of cash now for something that'll last well beyond the 3 years I got off the last backpack.

Concerns when purchasing: Magnetic rolltop. You don't have to be an electronics guru to understand magnets + electronic devices can result in hard drives, flash memory and what not being wiped. As I carry a laptop with me almost daily this was a major concern for me. The top flips and allows you to point the magnets "away" from any electronics entering the dry bag compartment so as long as you are careful everything should be fine.
Concerns after recieving the pack: My previous bag was labeled as 26L with a zipper that allowed it to go to 28L. This pack honestly feels much smaller even though it's labeled at 28L. Maybe they get the extra storage through the large pockets...but I know I can't fit many of the items I took home in my A* Aero Tech backpack home in this one. It really feels more like a 20L pack with 3 large pockets that get you up to the extra 8L.

Design: The vast majority of the pack is designed extremely well. I love the quick on/off using magnets, the fabric, the helmet holder and pockets. The problem is that airflow was not considered at all...20 min on the highway on an 85% day leaves you with a nice sweat outline over your chest where the magnetic latch attaches and along your back where there is no foam to raise the pack off of direct contact with your back at all times. In addition to the airflow problem there is also a padding problem, in my old pack I had no doubt that if Iwere to get into an accident my laptop would have a 60%-75% chance of survival, this bag has limited to no padding so while the pack will likely survive a crash, I do not belive my laptop would.

Good Bag, but small and too $$$
If it's so expensive, why'd I buy it then? Because it looks so much better than any other motorcycle-specific bag on the market, and I wanted something in the 25L range.

Bang for the Buck: Like lots of expensive motorcycle gear, I have a hard time giving a high rating here. Similar to my Schott jacket and Rokker riding chinos. I feel like these are great products but quite overpriced. The premium seems to reflect uniqueness and/or lack of competition more than any real innovation or functionality inherent in the product. There's absolutely nothing wrong with that though and its not these company's fault if competitors choose not to offer similar products at similar price levels, but a premium justified on these basis don't generate bang for the buck. Such is the case for this bag.

Features: All the features I want in a motorcycle backpack - waterproof rolltop main compartment, easy-access outside pockets, load-balancing strap, not-crazy look. Bonus quick release buckle system and ability to carry a hydration pack. Only thing missing is about 8L of capacity by my reckoning. I compared it to my previous bag, a 20L Northface Blacktail which was primarily a hydration pack first, bag second. In the main compartment, they both hold ROUGHLY the same amount of stuff - which is to say, not very much. My biggest letdown with the bag, as I had hoped that it could carry more.

Comfort: I have yet to carry really heavy loads on this bag but its pretty light itself and the straps do their job well. One nit I have is how high the quick release buckle/cross strap sits across my chest. Now that it's warm weather, I like to ride with my jacket half-zipped to open up air flow to my chest. But the cross strap closes off this area entirely.

Style: I personally love the look. Works great with my overall gear aesthetic - casual, low-key, functional.

Ease of Install: I take this to mean ease of wearing/removing. Not quite as easy to sling around as a "normal" backpack due to the bulk of the straps. Somewhat difficult to get jacketed arms through the straps without twisting them sometimes as your arm may hit the cross strap, which as quite stiff (as is the rest of the bag). Undoing the magnetic closure is easy enough, but if you're trying to close it up with your helmet on, good luck. Took me a solid 30 seconds of trial and error trying to line-up the magnets - you have to get it just right. Strap adjustment is easy as advertised though, and I had little trouble getting the hook into the buckle to close up the roll top.

Fit and Finish: Top notch stuff. Very stiff but durable-feeling fabric, and I have no concern man-handling the toggles on the front pockets. Zippers slide easily too. I'm looking forward to putting this bag through its paces.

Why did you choose this?
RevZilla Store
Features, yeah. But style? You sell the "sizzle" not the steak! This thing SCREAMS cool. I ride a ThruxtonR Why? cuz its a great Bike. I could list features for an hour but ALL the great writers have already done so. But on top of all that, the reason I am on my way to Vegas to pick it up , (great deal) is partly because of the "COOL" factor. Priceless

What size hydration bladder fits in the pocket?
Matthew F on Jun 1, 2017
BEST ANSWER: I've put one of my 100oz camelbak bladders in the pocket and that fit just fine. Haven't tried the 3L size though. If you use one that is more square and not super long like the 3L one's usually are, you should be fine. Do note though, the size of the bladder will take away from the interior capacity of the main compartment due to the stiffness of the outer fabric.
