SW-MOTECH Skid Plate Suzuki V-Strom DL650

Whether you are getting stuck in the mud or running in a desert rally, the SW-MOTECH Skid Plate is a great piece of protection for your motorcycle’s fragile underbelly.

These skid plates are laser cut from a highly-durable aluminum alloy - 4.0mm thick aluminum is used for the base plate and 2.5mm thick aluminum is used for the side plates. The base plate is meant to take any direct impact and the side plates wrap around the engine block to provide both bottom and side protection. Unlike other skid plates which are welded together at the folds, these skid plates are held together by the same punch-rivet technology found on most modern german cars.

SW-MOTECH works closely with multiple motorcycle manufacturers on designing many OEM accessories. The information gathered from this is directly carried over into the design of SW-MOTECH products. This means SW-MOTECH products fit as good or even better than stock equipment.

Includes a cut-out for oil drain bolt to allow for easy oil changes.

On the Fence...
I'm a longtime fan of SW Motech products, but I must admit I'm a bit hesitant to come right out and suggest someone purchase this exact skid-plate (2012 and up V-Strom 650) -- let me explain...

I rode KLR's for years and absolutely love the line of armor that SW makes for them. They are simple and burly and very competitively priced when compared to products far less durable. The truth is that the same cannot quite be said of the line for V-Stroms; the crash bars are great and still priced fairly. The Skid-Plate on the other hand is an insanely priced ($280!) and sub-par in the build (riveted aluminum) and manner in which it attaches to the bike.

The issues I have with built are simple, I'd prefer welded steel or aluminum as opposed to rivets that are more likely to come loose on impact with a rock. The construction seems adequate, but when compared to the AltRider plate it pales.

My major issue (other than price) is the awkward way it attaches directly to the engine block, rather than the frame. The truth is, no other existing competitor has a better solution. It's a frustrating instal filled with rubber mallet whacks and curse words strewn. Things don't fit together as precise as I would have liked, but in the end I was fairly satisfied and it has held up and deflected some nice sized rocks away from my header and oil filter.

Conclusion: Far too mediocre to warrant such a high price tag. It does the job, but leaves me yearning for a slightly better solution for build and mode of attachment to the bike. I don't think you'll be upset with the plate's performance/protection, but the purchase just might leave you with a lingering sense that you've been financially violated.
