SW-MOTECH Quick-Lock EVO City Electric Tank Bag
This bag was designed especially for the narrow handlebar clearances and sloping tank of BMW GS models, but fits many sport-touring and enduro bikes with steeply sloping tanks. With its narrow-cut front, it does not cause handlebar interference. Despite the narrow form in the front, the expandable City EVO tankbag offers a volume of 11 to 15 liters.
The SW-MOTECH QUICK-LOCK EVO Tank Bag system consists of a small plastic ring that bolts to your gas tank and a corresponding latching mechanism built into the bottom of QUICK-LOCK EVO Tank Bags. Removing the bag to fill up for gas is as easy as pulling a short lanyard at the front of the bag and lifting. The bag will then easily snap back into place, thanks to its spring-loaded mechanism. Bike-specific mounting rings are sold separately, see "SW-MOTECH QUICK-LOCK EVO Tankring Adapter Kit" for the ring that matches your tank.
The electric feature puts 12V power inside your tank bag for charging smart phones or other battery-operated devices while you ride. The electrical connection is safely and securely made between the bottom of your tank bag and the Tankring Adapter Kit so you don't have to disconnect any wires when filling up for gas. Just unclick your tank bag, then click it back into place; the electrical connection will be made automatically. The bag itself is fine, I only say fine because I have yet to use it for travel. It seems to lock on the tank ring pretty solid. The issue is the electric upgrade. Any one familiar with the GS 1200 knows there is an auxiliary power plug in on the dash. This is were my friend wires his bag in and would be the most logical solution. When you want power, you plug in the bag, when you don't want power you don't plug in the bag. If you forget something is plugged in and you walk away from the bike, your battery doesn't die. To my fault, I assumed this was where SW Motech was wiring the bag, WRONG! All they do is send a wire harness to wire straight to the battery, which in itself might not be a problem until you see how it powers the bag.
This bag secures to the bike with a tank ring that screws into the bike at the fuel door. Cool design. For the electric version you need special tank ring that the wiring harness connects to. It connect to the front of the tank ring and has about an 8-10 inch tail ( I didn't measure it). The problem lies in two parts, First, this tail does not have a disconnect to it so it is always attached to the tank ring. This means, you must always have the bag on the bike unless you want to have this power cable exposed and on display on top of your tank. That leads me to the second problem. The cable covers the little trap door on the tank, which makes it useless, even if you don't mind having a wire cable draped over your tank with the bag off, you lose (what I consider a very cool little feature) complete use of that little storage space. Just a completely bad design from what seems to be a very cool company with A LOT of cool upgrades.
Now, before any of you ask "Why don't you just send it back and get something else?". Well herein lies problem number three. To mount the locking mechanism to the bag, which locks the bags to the tank ring, you have to drill holes through a hard plastic piece on the bottom of the bag.
I guess this is wear problem number 4 arises. Mounting the bag has it's own set of instructions. Wiring the bag has it's own set of instructions. They don't really reference each other .So if you do what I did, and mount the bag first to see how it fits and looks before you dive into the wiring, you have already drilled holes in the bag.
Long and short of it, I am grossly disappointed in the design and the fact that I spent $100 more for features I will not use. I have contracted Revzilla, providing pics and explaining the situation. The reality though is I have drilled holes in the bag, per the instructions, and Revzilla no longer has the non-electric version in stock. I am waiting to hear if we can agree on a solution but the problem has nothing to do with Revzilla and I understand that they are not at all responsible for "poor design".
I am expecting that I will just be wiring the bag myself, and hopefully the bag itself proves to be a good product, but please, for all those interested in this bag...DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY ON THE ELECTRIC VERSION.
