It seemed like the obvious choice because the previous owner had already installed the Alu-Rack and I really like most things manufactured by SW Motech.
This adapter iis a very sturdy piece of plastic that could benefit from a more thorough design. My first problem came with the installation of six very small screws, which can be easy to loose while handling. These tiny screws barely thread onto the adapter plate but have managed to stay in place for the last 5,000 miles.
Next is the loose fitting of the top-case. The adapter plate comes with two sets of rubber "bobbins" which are used to dampen vibrations and to provide a tighter attachment fit to the top-case. First of all, they're a pain in the neck to install in the tiny holes of the adapter. If you try to screw them they'll break their inserts as they're not designed to sustain any torsional movements.. I broke a couple of the first set (thinner ones) so I ended up using the other included set (thicker ones). I had to hammer them down to get them inside the adapter holes.
It doesn't matter how hard they are to install, they will fall off very easily when washing your bike or by riding over bumps without the case attached. The printed instructions have a part number for those rubber grommets but I haven't figured out a way to order them from SW Motech yet.
The overall fitting of the top-case is loose as it moves slightly around the adapter in all directions. I guess that the mounting points are smaller than they should be allowing the case some movement. I had never had that problem with other Givi adapters.
The other day I discovered another irritating design flaw in which I tried to attach a smaller, lighter commuter rear bag via straps and couldn't find any attachment points within the adapter plate. Is just a massive piece of plastic with no holes or slots to securely slide in a thin strap, regardless of how it looks in the pictures. I was forced to remove the adapter and carry the small duffel bag directly on the Alu-Rack, which is way smaller for carrying almost anything. I'm definitely switching for the whole Givi setup.

There is no other way to mount a Givi Monokey onto the Alu-rack other than this system, so because of that i would recommend not getting that rack as well.
There are 3 pins total, but 2 are inline with eachother and the whole box will pivot about that point. The moment about the 2 pins creates a shear force on the 3rd, which is taking almost all the stress of the entire system as u ride down the road.
ONE pin less than 1/8" in diameter is the weakest link in this whole system!!! The strength of the Alu-rack doesnt matter if the weakest link is a tiny pin.

First the pros - the Alu-Rack and Plate construction quality are top of the line - they are expensive but heavy, sturdy, with perfect smoothed edges, welds and powder coating. Installation is easy peasy, and the look definitely contributes to the bike. The rack provides more mounting points, but doesn't put your top case waaay back or up there. The Plate goes on and off easily, and provides exactly the versatility it promises. Easy on for top case and easy off for the clean look.
Now the cons. Three major opportunities to make these better...One, the rubber mounts are a joke - they were back when I had the setup for my 07 FJR and nothing's changed. This time, I didn't even waste my time with them - I threw them away and bought a better solution at Home Depot. Two, the tiny Phillips screws provided are small AND they thread INTO the Alu-Rack. All the screws went in fine with the exception of one (of course the last one - always happens that way!) which had a tiny flaw inside the "plus" where the screwdriver seats into the screw providing torque leverage - all went fine, but why should it be this hard? It shouldn't. Bigger screws that bolt on the other side of the rack, please. And three, the "quick release" screws work fine - just like they did on my 07, but...of course they will wear over time because, well, they are quick-release., and will have to be replaced with some other mechanism in time. But why start out that way? This is the top case on the back of my touring rig - I want something just as easy to remove but providing more security in keeping everything together for the long haul.
Obviously, since I knew what I was getting into and did it anyway, the pros outweigh the cons to me. The Givi rack is less expensive but ugly IMHO, has a lower weight rating (and feels like it), shares mounting points with the side cases and looks like it juts the top case further back - not what I want with a short wheelbase rig. I haven't seen any bad reviews of this setup, but the Alu-Rack grab handle design, build quality and versatility in the end won me over.
All its cons can be fixed with a Home depot. Shouldn't have to be this way but unfortunately after 25 years of motorcycling I've learned things are seldom perfect, and in the end, I'm willing to spend more time, effort and money to get exactly what I want.
