Reviews & Questions
The ample lateral ankle bracing doesn't connect to anything except leather on the medial side. If your heel touches down on the medial side of the ankle, or if something gets tangled that causes a medial twist, the boot offers - in my opinion - inadequate support.
My last track crash involved a medial twist. I was not wearing these boots, but after purchasing and testing on my still raw ankle I'm unfortunately unconvinced they would perform. You can easily bend the ankle to the inside well beyond its natural range with no mechanical stop or slowdown.
I wish this were different. Why Sidi didn't continue the plastic heel around to connect to the medial side brace mystifies me. They are a beautiful boot, that offer a lot of support, and so many other features, I wish it were not so.
When compared against the Alpinestars Supertech-R, or the Dianese Torque RS (in/out), they lose. Both these alternative boots performed better in my crude, twist-my-raw-ankle-by-awkwardly-pushing-it-in-unnatural-angles-to-the-medial-side-yet-not-on-a-bike-(now I need Advil) test.
So I'm returning the Sidi boots. However, I'm still torn between the Supertech-R and Dainese Torque RS. The Supertech seem to provide the most amount of support, and they are ridiculously comfortable (they really do feel like slippers), but they're a bit clunky/bulky. Once again I wish the Italians had made a boot feel as technically supportive, but the Dainese ever so slightly don't: the ankle support is external, which wouldn't be an issue except that the upper portion of the boot fits a bit loose nullifying the supportive effort (maybe with huge calves your ok?? Even with the calf adjustments at their tightest they're still loose on me), and their lateral sliders are much higher on the boot, risking a touch down of heel rubber before the slider can do its job.
I hope this helps someone in their decision, and doesn't just frustrate. Good luck!
Potential issue in the future with the tecno fastener system. It's essentially a heavy gauge poly wire like fishing line. This will eventually wear from repeated tightening and loosening. I would have to guess that this is really a safety design to make it easy to cut through in a medical situation as opposed to using braided steel wire. The fasteners aren't expensive at least, so not a big deal.
The heel protector does tend to catch on the back of the heel guards on my stock rearsets(Ducati 1198S) at times and they also get a bit in the way of putting the kickstand down. Not deal breakers, but something I've had to get used to.
Tons of support and protection, but lots of room for improvement. Somewhat disappointed that Sidi didn't add more protection for the price. Under $400 would seem more reasonable for the boots. Very little break-in required. The boot is a bit larger, so I would have to wear thick socks so my feet do not swim around in the boot, but the ventilation provides enough airflow to keep the feet cool and dry.
Pros: Great air flow. Comfortable even when walking around. Protects many of the important areas of the leg, foot and ankle. Fairly lightweight. Soles extremely grippy. Tons of cool stickers included. Tons of compliments.
Cons: Expected more protection for the price. Tensioners seem cheaply made. Soles too grippy for the first couple rides. Somewhat complicated and confusing when putting on the first couple times. So expensive, I am afraid to scratch them.
Excellent prrotection and nice fit, just that they are a bit to narrow for my little wide feet but still managable in them when racing.
THEY DO NOT. with everything else being replaceable , the actual HEEL is not replaceable.
The front sole is. But it is a small piece .
They are great boots, they are comfortable to wear , break in pretty easy, and amazingly adjustable.
Great boots , even in 90+ weather like today , they felt great !
Get them !!
Searching the internet people put all sorts of lubricants on the hinges or scuff up the lorica
Is this effective? Would a washer (of sorts) help? Like a really thin piece of teflon. Do you guys know if anyones tried this? Or is this just a norm.
