Shoei Hornet X2 Seeker Adventure Helmet

What's in a name? Call it the Shoei Hornet X2 Adventure Helmet, the Shoei Hornet ADV Helmet, or just the Shoei Hornet Adventure - a rose by any other name would be as equally prepared for the street or trail.

Adventure riding essentially knows no bounds. The Shoei Hornet X2 Helmet offers serious dual-sport enthusiasts the optimal balance between on- and off-road form and function. Designed to maintain peak performance without compromising the core values of long distance touring, the Hornet X2 is a true all-road, all-weather helmet.

The Shoei Hornet X2 Adventure was created to replace the Shoei Hornet DS and to be a hybrid of a premium road and off-road helmet. The shape of the mouthpiece and chin bar area is designed to improve air intake and ventilation performance, while giving the rider additional air space needed to accommodate heavy breathing during off-road riding. Improving on the traditional off-road mouthpiece, the Hornet X2 provides additional protection in the event of adverse weather. A multi-stage lower vent shutter allows riders to fine tune airflow for most riding conditions.

Solid Helmet, But Not Perfect, Already Considering Other Options.
I've been using an Arai XD4 for the past two years while riding my R1200GS. No matter what I did, after about two hours of riding, the Arai hurt the crown of my head on long, all day, rides. It is also too difficult to change face shields with the Arai. So I bought the new Hornet X2 Seeker. I took a medium length ride this past weekend of about 250 total miles. I was battling a 15-20 MPH cross wind and did a mix of offroad at slow speed and onroad at 65 MPH.

Pros: (1) it fits wells and is more comfortable than my Arai XD4. (2) With no wind, the helmet is stable at 65-70 MPH. (3) The face shield and peak are very easy to remove with no tools.

Cons: (1) The peak could not handle a 20 MPH cross wind and my head was getting jerked around. I removed the peak and that made a huge difference. (2) I would rate this helmet as noisy (even with ear plugs). I was really hoping for a more quiet helmet, but it turned out to be really noisy. (3) Chin ventilation is lacking. It was 70 degrees while I was riding and I started to think that this helmet is going to be really HOT at 80+ degrees. The chin vent is too small and off road on a hot day I think I will cook. (4) Weight. According to Revzilla this helmet is 3 pounds, 15 ounces (1,786 grams) in size medium. The heavy weight is supposed to be compensated for by the balance of the helmet. That is somewhat true, but not true in a cross wind. In a cross wind, the helmet felt heavy, even without the peak, and I suffered from a lot of neck strain after my ride.

Other Options. I'm already considering the Touratech Adventuro Carbon. It weighs 1375 grams (size medium) and has an interchangeable chin vent that is much larger, along with an easy change visor and peak. A 25% weight reduction of a carbon helmet is getting my attention already.

Great helmet
This is a great helmet, no doubt.
I have a slight question to all the other owners though!:
Comfort wise, both a friend of mine and I have the same issue with it! Our right ear hurts after a long journey.. I be been wearing this helmet for 3 thousand klm and so far after all 5 trips my right ear hurts like a mother f...er.
And the same goes for my buddy who owns same model but he has the small size and I have the large!!!

Is anyone else experiencing the same thing ???
Thanks

Oh and as far as the rest goes it is an awesome helmet..

Dual Sport Upgraded Brain Bucket
Did not get this helmet from ZLA, but wanted to post on here since I usually get most of my gear from here. I finally decided to spring for the $$ bucks and get the brand that I know always fits my head. I got the Seeker in the Orange and black since it looked killer on the images. But Wait..... The orange is the Blaze Orange and not the "sunset orange" as depicted here. That was a bit of a let down, since I was trying to match my other gear and bike accents on my F800GS. Not a deal breaker but a little bit of a let down. But you're reading this for the sake of the function of the helmet, not merely cosmetics.
Fit ________ Ouch; at least at first. I have 3 other SHOEI's in the XL. I thought my ears and cheeks were gonna tear off when pulling this thing on. (At first anyway), but once I got the lid fully on. Not quite so bad. Wore it 20 miles on the way home. Well; OK I can deal with this. Took it out 200 miles this Sunday afternoon; and in the rain. I think I'm liking this Can better all the time. Bottom line, the new SHOEI's including the NEOTECs, simply fit a lot more snug and overall fit the cheek and chin areas better, than the Qwest or for certain, than the MULTITECs. It takes a bit of getting use to is all, but I do have a thinner set of cheek pads coming (once they are received by suppliers) nonetheless. Quiet____ Perfectly quiet?; not quite. A lot better however, especially with a bit of a "real" windshield. I tried this helmet when riding my larger K1200LT (larger V-Stream) and even with the bill on, you'd never know you had a dual sport helmet on. Wind flow? Let's not kid ourselves here. Wind Flow = Noise. A quiet helmet, will inherently be restricting the flow of cooler air into and around the helmet. Did SHOEI do a good design trying to maintain decent air flow? Yes.
Is this a cool helmet? Not exactly. We all know you have a trade-off on these two properties. Lets just not kid ourselves about the Air-Flow requirements here.
I have not yet put my SENA headset onto this helmet yet, nor Have I tested the PINLOCK system on the X2. I have Pinlocks on all my other helmets so I'm expecting the same positive results here.
Bottom Line, I have no regrets springing over $600. on this helmet.

Awesome helmet with new technology.
After using this helmet for four months I will now review. I used to ride on the street with a 2014 fox v1 helmet. The shoei x2 hornet is a world of difference. No more drag created by winds at speeds of 80+. I can even turn my head with the peak on and not feel the wind pull. Shoei made a very good design for reduced drag. One thing I must comment on is the way that this helmet is weighted. It is heavier in the front to reduce pull back of the helmet at high speeds. i can feel the front weight at lights when I am stopped but am very glad to have it when I am moving. Great helmet and the price is what you'd expect from a top name company. I was in the dual sport helmet market and decided to try the shoei x2 over the arai xd4. I do not regret my decision. Plus I like the way it looks. I normally ride with goggles, but when you put the face shield down, your ride becomes very quiet. Which is a nice option especially if you run a Bluetooth unit.

Awesome dual sport helmet
Top tier helmet with high quality craftsmanship and materials. Easy to remove peak and internal padding. The shield is trickier to remove than my previous Shoei helmet, but has a very stable feel once connected, whether it is open slightly to vent, open full for goggles, or closed. The replacement shield has a separate review and is also a solid quality product. The pin lock screen is of high quality and visibility is crystal clear. The wide opening gives a larger field of view than my previous street helmet which opens up the peripheral vision very well. Sizing inside the helmet is perfect based on the measurements. The opening of the helmet fits smaller than my previous Shoei though, so it is tough to get on and off. But that tight fit around the neck (caused by the cheek pads) reduces airflow noise during the ride. I highly recommend this helmet and despite the high price, I would buy it again if something happened to this one. It is worth every penny.

My first nice helmet
I went back and forth over which helmet to purchase and finally settled on the Shoei Hornet X2. I didn't realize it was going to be quite so bright of an orange as it looked more subdued in the pictures, but that's growing on me. I've only logged about 200 miles in this helmet, but the fit is perfect based on my measurements and I can't imagine going back to one of my old helmets for even one ride. This is top quality, comfortable and quiet.

Shoei quality at it's best
Coming from a large shoei RF1000 the new Hornet large fit perfect. Went with the black and orange and was surprised to see it was florescent orange. Wasn't sure about the color at first but it has grown on me. The wide vision is excellent and the slightly longer nose makes for a very comfortable helmet. The visor works as advertised and only minimal drag when you turn your head.

Very impressed
this is my first adventure style helmet and I spend some money, but it seems like the value is there. You can feel it. The first thing I noticed coming from a shark ear was the field of vision, wow it's incredible. I can see so much more around me. So I feel safer and know where the cars are without turning my head as much. The fit is great, I also ride off road so I am accustom to the cheek fit. Ride for an hour no issues. The visor will catch a little wing when turning my head but not bad, the is a keeper.

Excellent Helmet - Great Design
Overall I am very happy with this helmet and don’t have any complaints. It fits very well, is comfortable, and its weight is very well disguised utilizing good balance and aerodynamics. Shoes didn’t disappoint in the quality department as expected, it has both Snell and DOT approval, visibility is great, goggles fit well inside as long as you get the right goggles, airflow is superb, its quiet, and most surprisingly, the peak has almost undetectable drag when seated, standing, or turning the head. Overall this is an excellent helmet - you will not be disappointed. Just an FYI - I tried both the FOX AIRSPC and Scott Hustle goggles. The AIRSPC's do not fit without removing the nose guard, and are a very tight fit after the nose guard is removed with very little room for air flow. The Scott Hustle's fit very nicely.

The only cons I could find, weight and the hole in the top with the peak removed, are negated by excellent design and aerodynamics. I can find no viable cons with this helmet.

Nice helmet, but...
I just got back from 1000 mile trip with this helmet and am overall very happy with it. Putting it on and taking it off is not pleasurable though as it really has a narrow opening and it pulls your ears pretty bad. I actually have to reach in through the face to fix my ears as they get folded over and I can't hear my helmet speakers. Once it's on though, it is very comfortable, excellent vision, and very aerodynamic.
Ventilation is lacking and should be better, but thinking this was at the expense of making it quieter and more comfortable at speed.
