Scorpion Clutch Phantom Jacket

Focusing on the purpose driven needs of the serious sport rider, the Scorpion Clutch Jacket delivers commanding features and benefits to meet the expectations of the most demanding riders. Extreme perforation across the chest and arms allow for temperature regulation, while the1.2-1.4 Monaco top-grain leather and Sas-Tec CE armor provide extreme protection.

With the trademark Scorpion “broken in” feel, comfort is not sacrificed through the use of power stretch panels in the sleeves and underarms along with padded torso panels in the abdomen. The comfort and function continue with a neoprene collar leading back to the Powertector GP Air Hump, constructed with bioelastan antishock material for protection and aerodynamics, along with a hollow core that creates air channels for increased airflow. Addressing the needs of the street/track rider, the Clutch also incorporates NighViz accents, adjustable fitment, internal and external storage pockets and molded shoulder protectors.

The Clutch Jacket is shifting expectations of Scorpion’s premium leather jacket offering into a new gear.

One of the FINEST leather jacket's on the market!
This is on the lengthy side, but I'd like to be detailed about this product.

One of the reasons why I purchased the Scorpion Clutch Phantom Leather Jacket is because I wanted a leather jacket that either had thermal molded protection towards the front of the rib cage and stomach area (more closely around the gastrointestinal area#, or, some degree of raised abrasion protection #temper-foam# around the same area for street riding. Score 1 for Scorpion! They accomplished this goal magnificently! It’s also aesthetically FANTASTIC! But let me back up a bit and offer my humble subjective experience while riding in this jacket. [*NOTE* I’ve only had this jacket for about 5 days, but, I have logged 381 miles in it]. Again, this is a subjective review and will vary with your ridding style, skills, and needs:

First – The stitching around the shoulder sleeves connecting the upper torso gives a feeling of a professionally hand stitched job of the highest quality. [That adds confidence in regards to being attentive to the smallest details]. The neoprene collar is also attached very well to the body of the jacket, and, I have found it to be ultra soft as well. There is leather that covers approximately 2/3rds of the front and side of the collar. [Very nice touch]. By not having leather on the back of the neoprene collar, I experienced a more natural feel on my neck. There was no collar stiffness or any uncomfortable helmet rubbing. And still, the collar has maintained its shape during every ride. I don’t foresee any negative material effects from long term helmet contact and moisture accumulation #sweat# either. So far I haven’t noticed any sweat accumulation or odor#s# after 4 full days of riding.

Second – I noticed that the tailoring at the drop #end of the back portion where “SCORPION” is embossed# moved with me while maintaining its rigidity as I rode. [That’s important to me because I didn’t want the tail portion to be so inflexible to the point that when my body moved ---- that specific portion of the leather did not. I’m not speaking of a “snug” fit here: just that I’ve experienced the drop in other premium leather riding jackets being either too soft for protection or too rigid for movement]. I think Scorpion has achieved a very unique balance of “fit and function” with this jacket in this area.

Third – I don’t usually wear leather jackets with a scoop #race hump#. I would have preferred a clean and well defined look for street riding. My track gear has scoops, which are all 1 piece leather riding suits. This is the first 1 piece leather riding jacket that I’ve owned with a scoop. And…I’m impressed! It vents well, it’s not obstructive with my helmet #although I wear a small to extra small in helmet sizes– brand dependent#, it cleans easily, and it’s comfortable #i. e. not noticeable while ridding#. And it gives a seriously edgy look!

Fourth – With simply a tee-shirt and a sweatshirt #not a hoodie#, and the included full sleeved thermal liner, the jacket performed phenomenally well in temperatures ranging from 50 to 60 degrees at highway speeds. From about 60-70 degrees, I wore a tee-shirt and a sweatshirt and I was quite comfortable at the same highway speeds. I’ve only worn it 1 day so far with temperatures hovering around 74-75 degrees, and, I was comfortable with just a tee-shirt on. Again I was impressed at how well ventilated this jacket performed. Fact: You’re going to be hot….when it’s hot. No doubt about it. [Especially while sitting at stop lights or in heavy-to-slow moving traffic in this jacket]. But the design and placement of the perforation on the front and sleeves of the jacket allowed for excellent ventilation at both, commuter and highway speeds. What was more amazing is that, except for the top of the scoop, there is no perforation on the back of the jacket. Yet, it still circulated air extremely well. I haven’t had the opportunity to test the jacket beyond 75 degrees thus far. From a comfort perspective, I would imagine that I will be fine #at speed# until the temperature reaches the 90+ degree mark. [Then I may have to switch to something lighter. We’ll see…].

Fifth – The jacket’s construction makes it weighty. But not at all burdensome or unbearable. All of the armor stays in place, but molds to your body’s form. It’s a little rigid upon first wearing, but it breaks in nicely. The shoulder amour sits on the clavicle bone and extends just below the shoulder muscle. However, it’s not at all uncomfortable while riding. My best reasoning for the placement of the shoulder amour is; 1# To limit swelling around the shoulder muscle upon impact and, 2# To guard against splinter fractures around the rotator cuff and the densest portion of the collarbone. I think a great deal of thought went into “how” the shoulder amour should protect you. With that being said, this jacket offers the ideal weight and feel in striking a balance among protection for highway commuting, aggressive street riding, and perhaps a few laps around the track---which I plan to test soon #with the appropriate track riding pants#. In either riding scenario, I believe the combination of overall thickness, protective armor #with your back protection armor of choice), and the impact protection areas – on this particular weighty jacket – will serve well in a host of moderate and legal speed low-side “mishaps” #which I hope to never discover).

If this jacket fits your budget, I can honestly say – in my humble opinion – it is “well worth every penny!!!” It’s simply a beautifully well-constructed leather riding jacket. During my many years of riding, this jacket is in my top 3 BEST leather riding jackets! I’ve added a photo while on a ride which displays how the jacket looks at highway speeds. [The items in the photo are: The Shoei RF1200 Dominance Black/Green helmet #with the CWR-1 Pinlock Dark Smoke Shield); SIDI Mag-1 boots and; Icon Pursuit Stealth gloves – onboard the 2014 Kawasaki Z1000].

Excellent jacket
I've used Scorpion textile jackets for a while. I was looking for a good leather jacket for the summer and tried on numerous brands such as AStar and Dianese. They had all the same features, but they did not have the look I wanted (without adding $200 simply because its an all black design). Then I decided to check Scorpion. I found this jacket, which had everything I wanted in the look I wanted. I took a chance and bought it and the armored back piece, trusting it would fit as well as my textile ones.

It fit better.

Unlike the AStar and Dianese I tried on, this jacket felt new, but broken in a the same time. The fit was absolutely great. The air hump in the back is low profile, but I can definitely feel a difference in my ride.

Overall, I would definitely recommend this coat to anyone looking for a good leather jacket.

Good Jacket ... Pricey but Worth It
The Scorpion Clutch Phantom Jacket is a little pricey but after months of having it and loving it I do believe it was a good investment. The fit is comfortable as you may be able to tell it has an aggressive feel to it when you put it on but not to the point where it's unbearable. Also, the removable thermal lining is amazing. Now that the weather is getting brisk I put the lining back in and it works well it keeps me warm in temperatures around 40 degrees (going at a speed of 50-60mph) and the fact that it is perforated I can still feel the breeze and maintain a comfortable core temperature. All in all, I would buy it again or suggest it to my friends because of the good quality of the jacket and sense of security you have when wearing it.

Some what Disappointed
Ordered the 2xl and it was WAY to big no big deal exchanged it for a XL and well thats to small. It fits without the liner tightly add the sastec back protected and there is much room. NOW for the gripes besides the huge difference in size from xl to 2xl at the sleeves. First there is just way to much space where the zippers are near the cuff of the sleeve so much room the zipper tabs won't stay with inside the channel. The cuffs WOW really with them zipped up there is still to much material that it bunches up when wore with gauntlet gloves. if anything the cuffs should be tight not loose. SO now with the bunching of the cuffs with the gloves there is also this odd cut to the cuff rather then being circular they added a angle in the cuffs of the glove so it doesn't sit right when wearing gloves. So in turn when wearing it with gloves you get a ton of bunched up leather from both the jacket and gloves (dependent on gloves) adding the zipper pulls get in the way. Love the jacket and ill have to see how it breaks in before deciding on a different jacket. Was hoping at the cost of it there would be more detail not overlooked

Great two-piece suit
Allow me to correct any misconceptions: The Scorpion Clutch jacket does indeed zip to the Clutch pants. I guess they made the nescessary corrections. The fit, finish, and protection offered are all first rate. I bought this jacket and pants combo primarily because it was black. No zoomy stripes. Or so I thought. The jacket and pants do indeed have a grey stripe. Subtle, but it's there. I purchased a D 30 back pad to add to the jacket. Money well spent.

Awesome Jacket.
I'm 5'8", 175 lbs with a 40" chest and I purchased the MD. I can't really move up to large sizes because i'm not very tall, and the MD fit my build much more comfortably than the Scorpion Ravin jacket, however, it was too tall for me even as a MD. When I sat on my bike It rose up and would be up against my through. It wasn't painful, but it wasn't comfortable and I wouldn't want to get any chaffing there. I would consider this to run slightly large because it fit my upper body comfortable like most large sizes do, but it also fit large for my height. I would recommend sizing down if you're uncertain between sizes. I sent this back because it was too tall for me to ride in, but if it fits, I would recommend it. I would also recommend the Scorpion Ravin Jacket if you're too small for this and you're willing to spend 100 more for full compliment of sas-tec armor.
