Roland Sands Design Ronin Black-Ops Jacket

The RSD Ronin Jacket is an exercise in nostalgic design blended with modern functionality. The murdered out Black-Ops version is the shadow of the original. Packed with all the same features as the OG Ronin Jacket, but with all black zippers and fasteners, there isn't a sleeker, darker retro inspired jacket out there.

Features:

  • "Combat" top-grain cowhide leather, hand finished, washed and oiled / waxed (0.9mm - 1.1mm thickness)
  • Detailed cafe style shorty snap collar
  • Aggressive riding fit with rotated, pre-curved sleeves, dropped back length and relaxed collar opening
  • Rubberized Black trims
  • Suede leather exterior and interior trims
  • YKK water-repellent zippers
  • Satin poly lining with custom RSD lightning bolt heat emboss
  • Soft lined electronics security pocket
  • Stretch mesh cargo stuff pockets
  • Armor ready shoulder, elbow and back protector pockets

Note: Color of jacket will lighten over time due to exposure to UV light.

Price is not relative to quality...fading badly after minimal use.
Bought the Ronin in Adelaide (Australia) in black to go with my RSD "Check it" helmet. After only 6 months it has faded badly to a funny shade of brown but NOT uniformly. Contacted RSD and sent some photos only to be told "Please keep in mind that leather will fade and this is a natural process. To prevent further aging, we recommend using Lexol Leather
Conditioner..." by their representative. Well at this price point I think that's less than ordinary. I have been buying leather jackets for over forty years now and this is the first with such a poor finish even though it is the most expensive. It IS comfortable, I like the features like all the pockets and the clip for my key fob but I'm so sick of people asking me why it's faded at different rates in different places that I am going to pay to have it re-dyed properly. I do not recommend this product.

If you want to look the part
I have only had this jacket for a few weeks, but its awesome! Great fit, in terms of warmth/coolness it sits in the middle. In NZ we're currently enjoying the inconstant weather that is Spring, so I've been caught in both a bit of heat and some cold snaps and the Ronin is consistently comfortable.
The best thing about this jacket is the style. If you want to look the part, it will play nicely.... If you prefer elasticised waist bands in your chinos and no nonsense fluro everything, then don't buy it.
I've seen that the jacket fades a bit in the sun, but I think that adds to the look.
Overall I'm very happy with the jacket.

Gorgeous as Marylin Monroe in NY with that little white dress,.
I wore a regular Ronin for a while a couple of years back and it was an awesome jacket for sure.

I went and bought the black ops for two reasons:
a) added styling on the all black scheme
b) interested on the new leather, with is amazingly soft and comfortable

Couldn't have purchased a better jacket. I don't know on how will it fare on durability, as a previous review stated issues on the dye of the regular ronin, but I have some experience in leather and this looks a very fine dye job.

Without the protection (purchased separately) looks AWESOME, with the protections you just can't really tell it's a moto jacket, even with the back protector in place, looks awesome as well.

Size chart is SPOT ON as well.

Now I want the oxblood/black one................

Great style / fit - lining is failing apart.
Everything about his jacket is just what I was looking for. Stylish enough to wear when I am not riding, protection and enough pockets to carry all the stuff I need. Ventilation is minimal but it rarely gets that warm here so good fit there.

My main issue is that I have only had the jacket for 6 weeks and already the lining behind the shoulder has started to shred. The lining is a combination of mesh and silk and where they meet behind shoulder they have ripped apart. Not sure if I got a size too small, or I am doing something wrong. But it should not do that so quickly.

I love this jacket, it fits perfectly. I just don't want it to fall apart inside.

Agree with other reviews
This jacket is made of many individual panels of leather, that all seem to prematurely fade at different rates. After just 2 seasons, this jacket has faded so much, & so unevenly that I had to initiate a return. Parts of the jacket are black, parts are reddish brown... completely unacceptable.

Roland Sands was good enough to authorize a return to Revzilla.

Great Leather Jacket! As a Riding Jacket?
I received this as a gift--and what an AWESOME gift!

1) Fit
I'm 5'8", 155 lbs, 43-44" chest, 29" waist, I wear a size 15.5, 332/33 dress shirt. I have Medium.

The sleeves are about 2" too long. Even in the riding position. The paneled arms disguise the bunching when the wrists are zipped.

The chest fits snug, but not uncomfortable. The torso has a few inches of excess material. I thought this was a "fitted" jacket?

The length of the torso is fine, comes just below my belt. A half inch shorter would've been perfect. The "drop seat" in the back does not go much lower than the front, however. Maybe 1/4"?

2) Bang for the Buck
So thankful I received this as a gift. $700 for a jacket without armor? Not much bang, and a whole lotta buck!

3) Comfort
The leather is BUTTER SOFT and the suede is great. No pinching or restriction of movement. I could (and will!) wear this all day in the Spring/Fall!

4) Features
Pockets are great and the water-resistant zips are awesome. I haven't tested the water resistance, and don't plan to. Again, though there's armor pockets, NO ARMOR.

5) Style
This is probably the only reason people buy this jacket. The style is amazingly cool.

6) Overall
If you surf the interwebs, you'll learn RSD's reputation is split. While many rant and rave about the "quality" being outstanding, there are far TOO MANY reports of burst and splitting seams and premature fading. For a Wilson's leather faux motorcycle-look jacket, sure. But for a riding jacket? No. I've been oogling this jacket and would have been happy to pay the premium price for a premium jacket. I am fortunate that someone spoiled me with it so I can test it out for myself. For now, the seams seem solid and the leather seems to be of good quality. I find I'm constantly worried about UV fading it funny colors.

I have not worn this on the bike and DO NOT PLAN TO RIDE with it until some time has past and it's proven it wont spontaneously explode or disintegrate on me. The leather is thinner and of lighter weight. IF it proves it self, I may get D3O armor and use it for quick rides. Fortunately, I have a few REAL RIDING JACKETS that have solid reputations and track records.

Dear Roland Sands,
I would think you would put more pride into your products. The overwhelmingly majority seems to report your stitch jobs and dye processes are an issue. You had a great name and a great reputation. Selling $500-$750 jackets that are built like a pleather mall "go-faster" motorcycle-look jacket should give you some red flags. I would love to buy more of your gear, but until you do some serious QA revamping, I will just have this jacket as a FASHION JACKET. You can be the king of motorcycle-look jackets that cost 2-3 times that of REAL RIDING JACKETS.

Looking for something that I would wear even when not on the bike. Very high quality, minimalist style with the right level of protection for getting around the city. Love this jacket!
