Reviews & Questions
Here is my one and only complaint. The straps. If you don't have saddlebag mounts or a sissy bar, i wouldn't recommend this. And for those who have one or the other or both, I suggest patience and creativity when it comes to attaching the straps to the bike. They work perfect once you get them figured out. I feel they don't tighten as easily as they should. It's not as simple as pull and tighten. You have to feed the strap through the buckle and go through a "too much too little" process to get the "just right" length set on all four straps...then there's the excess strap from where it's been tightened. I tied the excess of the straps together and placed it under the bag, then attached the clips to the cooler so the cooler was holding them down so they weren't flapping in the wind or slapping against the bike or getting caught in my wheels. That aside, it's great, especially for small to midsize bikes. I'm using it on a 2016 Indian Scout. It fits tight on the passenger pillion and snug against the sissybar. The outside bottom has a rubber lining so it grips well and doesn't slide or tilt or move in any direction at all and the straps stay tight once you have them set, it's just a struggle to get to that point.
It is a tad bulky, but honestly...it's a 12 pack cooler on a bike, that's to be somewhat expected. It never got in my way though. It never slid forward and hit my back and it didn't hang off the side of the bike so it wasn't a distraction in my mirrors. On the plus side, when I hit long straightaways, I was able to lean back a bit and relax and use it as a backrest.
There are no pockets on it which was disappointing, but it holds every bit of 12 drinks and ice blocks and still has some wiggle room, even has a bottle opener attached to it. Perfect for work commutes or solo riding on hot days or even as an overnight bag without the liner in it. Good purchase for the price.
Bang for the Buck: I had the most trouble finding a tail bag that would hold large/or tall drinks, keep them cool AND stable. This one did the trick and its cheap.
Features: Quick release for when I need to bring it about (into the store to pickup, to the customer to deliver), maintains shape when empty, some reflectivity, even a can opener, and of course the insulation. The separating shelf is a nice touch and will come in handy especially for the drinks in the small cooler, but the velcro strips along the inside of the bag only run vertically, which limits the use of the shelf to separate things horizontally (like drinks). Only thing missing is a rain cover. I understand the bags are water resistant but not waterproof.
Style: It's definitely not aerodynamic or low profile (you cannot mount it on its side because the buckles are two on each long side, no way to strap it down on only one side), but its not ugly. The faux-carbon fiber accent is nice, and being black helps it go with almost any bike.
Ease of Install: Took me about 30 minutes to install these, including the time it took to plan where the straps would tie down on the bike, to tightening down the buckles which was the most time consuming part. Its hard to tell from the pictures, but the provided straps have a loop on one end that you're supposed to pass the male buckle end through. So this restricts your tie-down locations to points where you can do this and still maintain enough strap length to reach the female-side buckles on the bags. This rules out tying down to passenger foot pegs and lower parts of the bike. This sits on the narrow rear tail section of my pillion seat, and other than being a little slanted forwards I had no problem mounting it. It will stay in place due to the rubberized bottom and the way I have it tied down.
Fit and Finish: There's some loose threads here and there, and the handles with the velcro-strap closure are OK but just feel sloppy. Its hard to describe, they just seem like kind of an afterthought. I'm sure they'll hold up fine though.
Overall, I feel like this combination is a courier's dream. With the two bags together I have about 50 liters of capacity, and the ability to maintain temps, and crucially carry drinks without as much fear of spilling them as I would in a typical tail bag.
