MachineartMoto X-Head for Water Cooled BMW R1200GS / R1200GSA / R1200RT / R1200R / R1200RS

X-Head Cylinder Guards provide wide coverage in a tough, 5mm thick stylish shape that protects the vulnerable magnesium valve covers of R1200 hexhead engines.  When a bike is dropped, even at a standstill, a cylinder first hits the ground at its front corner, then rolls onto its face before settling back down on the lower edge. The wide coverage X-Head design protects both the valve and spark plug covers. Openings in the face are designed-in to provide air flow over the valve cover, while the molded-in texture at the bottom will help hide minor abrasion.

X-Heads are molded in a high temperature resistant nylon and installation takes five minutes - slightly longer on RT’s - with included stainless steel bolts. The bolt threads are coated with Nyloc thread locking patch to keep the bolts from loosening.

If your crash bars have had an impact, check that there is still a minimum of 15mm clearance between the crash bars and the X-Heads.

Sold in pairs.

A must have for all airheads
I added these wonderful covers to my 2015 R1200RTWC, with the hope I never have to use them. However, Murphy and his laws witll at some point appear to prove that "it will happen, just a mater of time".

The install took honestly 10 mins to complete both sides. two hex bolts off, cover on, replace one hex and tighten the other (keep your factory hex bolt JIC).

Perfect fit! Great protection (BTW new head BMW covers are $1,500), and beats all other options on the market.

Now would install these on my dirt GS? no. They might work (not testing them) to protect a large rock hit, but then again I use steal bars to protect everything else on the GS, these belong on a street bike, that might get knocked over in the garage or a slow speed drop in a parking lot, these are not sliders people!

Great Product MachineartMoto!!!!

Attractive alternative to BMW and other head guards
Bought these for my 2014 R1200RT. The instructions are easy to follow, and the install is very simple. I didn't like that look of crash bars on an RT, so opted for the head cover/guard idea, and I think the X heads are the best looking of the bunch.

Perfect for the applicaton!
Wanted something to protect the valve covers if the bike was dropped. The guards are not meant for crash protection but all I was looking for was drop protection and these fit the bill perfectly and look good too.

Simple & Good Looking
Installed on 2016 Triple Black GS. Simple install and great looking. Complements the bike nicely. Based on the online videos reviewed prior to purchase where a GS was intentionally tipped over, they appear to be effective at preventing damage to the valve covers. Durability seems to be good as well. Simply follow the instructions for the install including torque of 7 ft lbs for the long T50 bolts. Take care installing the T25 screws supplied with the covers for the bottom as they are easily cross-threaded. Note the female threaded hole for the bottom screw goes in at a slight angle. The instructions caution about this.

MachineartMoto X-Head BMW R1200GS
I started using it when I ride off road and dropped the bike 3 times already.

Its very durable, it covers 3/4 of the engine head which is a big feature.
The only problem is you need to scrap the left side cover if you have SW-Motech crash bar for less than an inch. Otherwise it doesn't fit to install.

If you have no crash bar, no problem, installation is very easy.

Thanks.

Great product easy install
After struggling to install some lights on my bike, this was a breeze. Looks great on the bike and watching the youtube video for the install made it very easy. Took about 15 minutes. Gives me a bit of piece of mind until I get my engine crash bars.

For those who do not want crash bars (or do)
I found this to be the right fit for my needs. 80% tarmac/20% gravel mountain roads. Easy install, fit nice and look good. Sure protection is minimal but it's better than nothing. If you have a slow low side fall, tip the bike over or hit a branch here and there, this is where these help. Oh, did I mention they good too(I did).

Best Cylinder Head Guards out there
Buy these quick, before you lose your balance while adjusting your mirror with the wrong hand and you drop your bike in your driveway, marring your new bike's cylinder head.

I installed the hexhead version of these on my 2007 bike and didn't buy them soon enough for my 2014. They are far superior to the OEM cylinder head guards from BMW. I had the OEM guards on my 2007, and those break off in a flash and contribute to damaging your cylinder heads.

The machineartmoto guards are very substantial, are less likely to break off and will do a much better job protecting your cylinder heads from damage than OEM guards or expensive 3rd party metal ones. That said, I would not consider these a replacement for crash bars. Get both.

The only downside of the machineartmoto guards is that you need to use one of the cylinder head bolts to attach them, and as a result, you will need a torque wrench to properly re-tighten the cylinder head bolt as part of your install. There's an excellent video on YouTube of someone at machineartmoto installing these on a bike.

** Double check by searching the web that these guards will fit with your engine protection bars. Some engine protection bars fit more snugly than others.
