LS2 Valiant Line Helmet

The designers at LS2 took a popular concept, 180 degree flip, and designed a totally new and unique mechanism, allowing the Valiant to be the smallest, lightest helmet of its kind on the market. If the weather is cold, use it as a full-face. Easily flip the chin bar back to talk to your friends. As things warm up, use it as a ¾ open face helmet. No matter how you have it configured, you still get the benefit of a face shield and LS2’s Twin Shield System drop-down internal sun shield. The FogFighter treated fog resistant shield is optically correct, as well as scratch resistant. The comfort padding uses LS2’s Thermo-Form lining. Thermo Form uses heat and pressure to weld the outer material to the inner foam. This avoids the need for glues and other chemicals, and allows the breathable fabric to stay breathable. The liner is removable, washable and hypoallergenic. Fully adjustable dynamic ventilation allows airflow to keep you cool, and control to keep you comfortable. The quick release chin strap makes it easy to get a secure, comfortable fit. The Valiant is LS2 SENA Bluetooth ready and meets or exceeds DOT standards.

Where do I begin?
I have been looking for a new helmet for about a year. My head measures 61 cm, which is typically between a large and extra large by most helmet manufacturers. I typically find an extra large works for me. I have ordered and returned several of them in extra large, including a scorpion EXO 950, which was just a bit too tight. A Shark Evoline 3, which was way too tight (really a joke). I purchased a Shuberth C3 pro, wore it for half a day, and sold it on eBay for about $150 loss. I was not impressed that the Shuberth AT ALL, and I have previously written a review on the C3 Pro. I looked very hard at the Klim TK1200, but I really like a drop down visor so I don't have to deal with putting on and taking off sunglasses if I ride with the visor up. I also looked very seriously at the Shoei Neotech II, and the HJC RPHA 90. I ride a stock Indian Springfield mostly with the windshield in place. I understand that Helmet requirements for everyone would be different, especially if riding without a windshield.

Here's what I find most important in my helmet... or my "deal breaker" list:

Modular. I don't know how others stick to full face. I thought that chamber up and down 10 or more times on an average ride. Usually up 25 miles an hour or in traffic, and all shutdown on the interstate.

Removable liner. I live in the Midwest, and I sweat in the summer, and I remove and wash the helmet liner regularly.

High visibility colors, but as aesthetically pleasing as possble.

Visor can stay partially open while riding, with just a small opening, without the wind slamming it shut.

Fits snugly but comfortably with a wide visor opening so I can see in all directions without the helmet interference.

Has a dark drop down sun visor and I prefer a cable or gear mechanism. Not a fan of spring loaded, but that's not a deal breaker. Built in sun visor must go way down and give full visual coverage.

I like the ratchet closure, but I can deal with the "D" ring.

DOT and ECE certification. Good rating by a Sharp.

No rattles.

Here's what I don't find very important to helmet.

Ventilation.
Quiet.

I think these are way overrated for most riders and inextricably linked. The more you seal off the helmet, the quieter it is, however the hotter it is. I get it. If you are regularly zipping along the interstate, especially without a windshield, then helmet ventilation noise and buffeting matter a lot. But on a hot day, in traffic, all helmets are hot, and noise and buffeting are not really an non issue. If you just open the visor you can get plenty of airflow on any helmet, except you now have to deal with more noise. So, just wear earplugs if the noise is an issue. Personally, I find that my helmet covers my ears and works well enough to deaden wind noise, and my Indian exaust is not shattering glass either, so I don't have any ill effects from noise.

So, I ordered and purchased the new LS2 valiant helmet at Garvis Honda in Des Mones. Great guy over there. I rode with it for about an hour so far. This is a great lid by my standards.

First, not only is it modular, but it is DOT and ECE rated with the chin bar down, as well as with the chin bar flipped 180°, making it a "jet style" helmet. I wondered if I could transition from the "full face" to the "jet" mode easily, with one gloved hand while riding at highway speed. I did it 1st try, and very easily. Any time that you go to lift or snap down the chin bar, the helmet automatically lifts the visor out of the way, so you do not have to worry about where the visor is when you switch modes. The "click" of the chin bar snap down was solid, and the helmet fit, so it did not just push over my eyes when I moved the chin bar into the lower position.

The detents on the visor are rock solid. I was riding into a 40 mph gusting wind, at up to 70 miles an hour with the smallest opening on the visor. The visor stayed right where I put it, and never even flinched. The fit, so far, happens to be perfect for me. It contacts all sides of my head, and I can't even fit a finger between the liner and my head at any point, but I feel no areas of pressure. The cheeck pads pinch my face a bit, as they shoould. The geared(?) drop down sun visor is dark, and goes all the way down for full visual coverage. Metal contacts locking the chin bar, and a metal ratchet closure device are solid. Internal stuff is all removable.

Cons? The high visibility model costs a bit more, and it is more of a bumblebee look than a true neon high visibility helmet. Looks way better, but maybe not as noticible. Sharp has not yet rated the helmet. As far as developing a rattle, or durability in the long term, I will have to use this helmet for a year or so to make that determination.

All in all, I love this lid. It is like they made it specifically for me, and so far, I am delighted.
