Reviews & Questions
Easy chain adjustment:
Adjusting the chain slack is very easy with these chain adjusters. Because the axle inserts through a stationary cylinder for each adjuster, the rear wheel will not move forward or backward during the adjustment. The slide will only move via the adjuster’s adjustment bolt. Because of this, the chain slack can be checked without tightening the axle. The chain slack should be checked after the axle has been tightened just to insure that there wasn’t any unexpected change in axle position. I didn’t experience any change in the axle’s position after the axle was tightened. In comparison, the FJ-09’s stock adjusters only keep the rear wheel from moving forward, not backwards; thus, forward pressure always has to be applied to each adjustor on both sides of the wheel while tightening the axle. If forward pressure is lost while tightening the axle, the adjustment will be off, not to mention the possibility of improper wheel alignment. For the stock adjusters, the axle always has to be tightened before checking the slack.
Precise chain adjustment:
The chain slack can be adjusted very precisely. Each chain adjuster provides a scale marked in 1 millimeter intervals per tick. The adjustment bolt of the slider provides four linear positions of adjustment per millimeter. This is a significant feature. Being able to move the slide in such small increments allow an exact slack to be produced. The adjustment bolt of each adjuster can be turned by hand when the chain is not too taut. There is a distinctive click for each adjustment as the bolt is turned in either direction. At some point as the chain becomes tauter, a wrench is required to make the adjustments. When using a wrench, very little effort is required to turn the adjustment bolt. The chain adjuster has two marks on the slide mechanism that holds the axle. The marks are positioned right under the scale printed on the frame of the adjuster. This makes it fairly easy to know where the slide has been positioned. When the marks on the slide fall between two adjacent marks on the scale, and because of the small distance between each adjustment, a visual check of the scale/mark relationship cannot be solely rely upon. After I got the slack where I wanted it, I went back and counted the number of adjustment clicks from where I wanted the slide positioned and from where the one of the slide marks aligned with a tick mark on the scale. Using the number of click from the tick mark, I readjusted both adjusters to the same position.
Insures proper rear-wheel alignment:
Because of the fine resolution of both the printed scale and ¼ of a millimeter per adjustment of the slide, you can guarantee exact rear-wheel alignment. You cannot do this with the stock adjuster scale, frame mark, and adjustment bolt. The stock adjuster scale is 2 ½ millimeters between ticks and frame mark is 1 millimeter wide. Also the thread of the stock adjustment bolt is very course making small adjustments with the lock nut very difficult.
Installation is very easy. I put bike on its center stand. I put two thin paperback books under the rear wheel. The books kept the rear wheel in position while I removed the axle and the stock chain adjusters. Installation requires a tube of medium strength thread locker and two hex wrenches: 4 and 5 millimeter. Attaching the adjuster to the frame of the bike requires only three hex bolts. A little thread locker is applied to each bolt. Each bolt is tightened firmly by hand. The adjusters fit perfectly. It took me only 10 minutes to physically install both adjusters.
What a time saver. I didn't have to do a re-alignment on my chain after torquing down the rear axle nut!
This is a chain alignment tool for this dummy.
I love it! If I purchase another chain driven bike, I will buy another set of these!
I just installed these a few months ago so I can't speak on durability.
