Reviews & Questions
Riding 2014 Aprilia RSV4 Factory.
Comfort is excellent under jeans / pants while riding or sitting, however they are a bit awkward while standing. They were clearly designed to be most comfortable while riding. Jeans tend to bunch up above the knee armour while standing.
Protection feels solid and is CE rated.
Paired with a good pair of riding shorts, they make a nice, casual alternative to wearing leather / textile pants. Wore these on a 300 mile day trip for 10 hours without taking them off. They felt great while riding, however you become more aware that you are wearing them once you get off.
I won't waste my time saying things that have already been said. These are great pads, for all activities, and I would feel completely protected using these for motorcycling. The fit on these is pretty much perfect. At first, they are a little bit tight to get on, but once you get them on and worn in for a bit, they are great. I'll be looking at Leatt for any future protection needs I may have.
Now it's my boy's turn to learn to do something I love: riding motorcycles. Of course, that means dirt bikes. I ride mostly street, so we're both taking some off-road lessons this spring. I've got him all set with full protective gear but recalling my first season of snowboarding, I knew that if I was going to hit the trails (literally), I was going to need some better protection under my riding clothes, especially my knees.
I researched about a half dozen different knee guards and settled on either the Troy Lee T-Bones or the Leatt 3DF knee guards. The Troy Lees have had generally very good reviews and I found a pair of T-bones on sale on eBay, so I tried first. They are very rugged and tough, but also very stiff and uncomfortable, especially behind the knees. When I bent my knees the sleeve material would bind and pinch the skin.
Then I decided to try these Leatt 3DF guards, which have gotten almost universal praise from numerous reviewers. Revzilla was competitive with pricing and shipped them free and lightening fast, as always. The first thing that struck me was how hard, light and encompassing the knee cup is. It fully protects the front, top and sides of the patella and extends just far enough down to cover the soft tissue area between the patella and tibia. The sleeve is made of fairly thin, moisture-wicking elasticated material with a large opening behind the knee, which permits full range of motion without binding against the skin. There is only one strap above the knee but the inside of the top opening has silicone ribbing to assist keeping the guard in place. In short, they fit securely and are extremely comfortable, without super-tall socks or compression sleeves, to the point of being forgettable while in use.
I consulted the sizing chart on the Leatt web site before ordering and the fit was spot-on. If you are looking for knee guards, don't go cheap. Spend an extra $20 and get these Leatt knee guards. You'll be glad you did. They are worth every penny.
