I was all settled on a Shoei RF-1200, Shiney Red. Coming off a Shoei RF-800, the liner decayed and model is pre-replaceable liner. Total bummer, I liked the Iridium shield, I could look right into the sun, but progress is good, time to upgrade.
I read reviews, thought about it quite a while. $500 RF-1200 it is. And then, I got a $149 Bell Qualifier, having had Bell helmets with great satisfaction, why not!
I will tell you why not because it will blow your ear drums out is why not! Holey SH*T! Even after wearing the RF-800, with the no stuffing, the Bell blew. First new helmet I received had a poor paint job. (Revzilla exchanges no problem, and went with the Light Gold rather than Dark Gold Iridium Shield.) No improvement in noise, duh, and I started wearing ear plugs which is no joy either. Yeah, the Bell Qualifier fit well, fairly light weight, looks sharp but none of that matters if you won’t wear it because it is so, so, so very LOUD! You cannot hear yourself scream in this helmet. Even did a custom action camera mount - I still rued wearing this helmet.
Then, I see the Klim K1R Meridian, a new helmet in town so no rider reviews – I would be taking a chance; K1R listed with some features I care about - super light weight and includes a Transition shield. And Revzilla, still sorry about my Bell Qualifier fiasco, discounted the Klim K1R - I could get a “good deal.”
FOV, a little research, some side by side images. Much to my delight, K1R has a wider FOV than the Shoei RF-1200. With that, sold on the Klim.
The Klim K1R did not make me scream from the incredible noise as the Qualifier; the ~2 pound weight noticed, as in - not a noticeable helmet; and, the Transition Shield, thought was not going to darken –, when I viewed the helmet in the rearview mirror, that is when I screamed! As in delight! Plenty dark. Looks are outstanding on this helmet, the shield plenty dark.
So what is not 5 Star Rating about this Klim K1R helmet? Two issues with this helmet. If you wear one, you may have the second issue.
First, maybe cosmetic, “I don’t believe the manufacturer finished the internal shell!” Raw Styrofoam, pebbles on the vent holes - this is not a finished product. No ‘luxury car’. Revzilla no highlight internal features, they usually do - now we all know why. I can live with that.
To cover your head Klim provides a comfort liner, replaceable. Air flow while riding is noticeable. Front vent Up, get air across eyes. Air flow over head and ears. Jaw line pads tight, (I did say “OW!” the first time I put the helmet on, noticed a little skin burn when I took her off), pads should soften, form fit after more use. I kept chin curtain, removed nose piece.
Second issue is important. A riding distraction, and if I do nothing else right while I ride, I focus on the motorcycle’s performance, my riding manners, and pay attention to my surroundings. I cannot capture this issue - yet, though if I do, I will update this review.
I wrote both Klim and Revzilla, best I can describe:
“No, it is not the power in the power lines, it is an optical matter, I don’t think I can get an image as I am riding.” First day I wore it, I thought a drone or a large black bird was following me as I rode off down the street. The shield catches the overhead cables, runs an image/artifact across top of shield edge. Uncanny, once I figured out what it was, it became clear what it was.
More or less, you get the idea. We hope Klim looks at the shield design and if fix issue - this is a helmet worth looking at. Thanks for reading review.
Update Dec 2016
To inspect the inards easy, after replacing the liner, right brow clip no longer clipped. Returned helmet with everything in the original box to Klim. Klim replaced helmet, failed to include all other bits and pieces, ie spare visor clips, Instructions … After over two months still dealing with this purchase. Kinda sucks.
Pros: New helmet, no optical artifact, a defect, Klim may never admit, told me “as designed.” Really?
Cons: Revzilla and Klim respond in a timely fashion, Klim shipped UPS ground, means return shipment stopped in every State on its journey, from FL to CA. Then, I receive a less than complete new replacement package. Shipping package barely acceptable, a bare box, now wonder if even a brand new helmet replacement, where’s my stuff Klim? Customer Service on a >$500 product, there are expectations. Nothing about this was above and beyond. Klim sent some stickers …
