Reviews & Questions
The down side: The warranty is 1 year. No ifs ands or buts. I feel that just under two years of use is unacceptable for the price this product commands. The lack of manufacturer support in this matter is also a thumbs down. The phone call with ICON left such a sour taste in my mouth that I don't want to buy anything from them ever again. ICON I hope you take heed and build your products with more quality.
Great strap design.
Visibility at night.
Comfort on long rides.
Falling apart at the seams. (upper compartment)
Quality of sewing done.
I still recommend this to anyone and hope my backpack is an isolated issue.
The features are pretty awesome, as I still haven't managed to fill every pocket this thing has. I did remove the arm portions, but I'm considering putting them back on after noticing how much that reflective material helps. I can be in a pitch black room and a drag off a cigarette will light the pack up.
Once starting school, I'd load it down with my books, but I did notice some stretching of the seams on the right shoulder. Since using both shoulder straps, I've noticed the weight is handled a lot better. With the chest snaps and the shoulder straps fitted properly, the weight feels like a part of you, as opposed to a small child pulling on your shoulders.
The thick padding in the back, especially in the lumbar, helps to keep your back breathing when the temps get up near 100, but I will sweat a little under the chest straps, and it blocks the vents on my jacket, but it's never got uncomfortably hot.
An estimate of how much weight I carry during semesters would probably be up around 35lbs max., but I try to keep the books in the saddlebags now so the pack can last longer.
I started on a dual sport, so a helmet with a visor didn't fit in the bag, but regular helmets (I wear an XL) do fine. It makes the pack so tall that you won't be able to sit down in an upright riding position, though, and it looks like you're birthing a food baby, but it works a lot better than hanging the helmet on the bars and hoping for the best.
The only issue I've had is tearing between the wall of the smaller top pocket and the main storage area, but this was due to picking the bag up improperly with a full load.
I'd definitely recommend this bag for going above and beyond commuter use. I recently spent a few days camping out of state with it, loaded with a tool tube, about 3 outfits, paperwork, a flashlight, a deck of cards, medicine, and god knows what else. It was at maybe 1/2 capacity.
Was cool until the honeymoon phase ended (a couple days) and I realized how little room this pack actually has inside the "big" compartment compared to how big, bulky, and heavy the pack is overall.
I personally think the helmet holder feature is useless and a waste of space. I would much rather use that space for more stuff in the bag and carry my helmet or lock it onto my bike.... Especially because of how big and heavy the pack already is without a helmet hanging out the bottom.
Wish I had checked out this and the squad 2 in person before purchasing. I would also return if I could but already rode with it in the rain and what not.
Bottom line: Check it out in person first. See how much gear you can throw into it at a store, put it on and then sit on a bike to see how it really feels.
