Reviews & Questions
Some reviewers of these guards are saying that they are uncomfortable because of their bulk, and there is an element of truth to that. However in my limited experience with them they are certainly not so uncomfortable as to not be worth the extra protection they offer.
I wouldn't wear these over my kevlars though. Correct me if I'm wrong, but as with most knee armours in the market, the straps are not made of abrasion resistant materials. Hence, these armours may not stay in place in a crash unless you wear an abrasion resistant layer over them.
My biggest gripe with these armours is in the comfort factor. The bottom tips dig into my shins and after 2 days of commuting to and from work, they left bruises on my shins. This may have to do with the fact that I had to tuck them in my boots (TCX X-Miles). This may have more to do with me being 5'6". May work better for taller folks with longer legs than mine.
Note: I adjusted the straps just tight enough to keep them from slipping when I walk.
My other complaint would be how the velcro rubs against my calves. They will most likely chafe after a bit of walking.
They seem to offer great protection for that kind of fall, and also protect the shins. I wear them over jeans because its easy and my jeans are not baggy enough to contain them. Seems to work just fine. Sometimes I walk around stores with them on and forget I am wearing them (until I get weird looks).
If you want knee and shin protection, I think these are a great buy.
I wouldn't go racing with these, but for urban riding, these are great. I don't particularly like the styling, but they fit under jeans, so who cares. Air flow is great. I wish the velcro straps holding the armor to your leg offered more grippy, positive feel, but I do believe it would hold up in a crash. The armor has no tendency to slip or slide around while riding.
Sizing: I'm 6', 250 lbs, "non-athletic", with beefy long legs. They fit just fine.
I still use it in a pinch but i don't use it nearly as much as i'd like.
About me: 5'7", ~155lbs
I own other Icon products that I'm very happy with, although I tend towards the more discrete products they sell - this is not one of them. The Stryker has BIG armor - it does not fit under my baggy jeans even - and without a strap for the upper knee/thigh protection it just sticks out awkwardly. Even though the armor itself seems very protective, the 2 straps on the shin section do not convince me that this will stay put in a crash.
Comfort-wise, the straps are irritating at first but that quickly fades to a comfortable level. They're perfectly comfortable for sitting in riding position (I was wearing shorts while testing) and I think you'll forget you're wearing them if your eyes are on the road.
Price wasn't an issue for me (I'll pay for quality armor) but I couldn't justify $100 spent on what would probably become a Halloween costume piece (Mortal Kombat ninja, anyone? ;). Returning for something that assures me it will stay put.
If you plan on wearing these knee protection over your pants, you should have the same impact protection, but the abrasion resistance would be less efficient than a pair of Nylon, Polyester, Cordura, or leather motorcycle pants.
Most likely, yes.
However, if you wear a size 34 pant but have big, beefy legs (thighs and calves), you may have a problem. There is a video at the Icon site that may help you decide how big and beefy your legs are, if your girlfriend has not already told you. The video is here (click under the photo of the armor):
"Do not wash the Stryker Knee Armor with water. Remove any dirt with a damp cloth. Dry by laying the Stryker Elbow Armor and Stryker Knee Armor flat on a towel in a well-ventilated area. Do not use hair dryers or other heaters. Do not use solvents or other toxic substances to clean the Stryker Elbow Armor or Stryker Knee Armor."
That being said, I just wipe mine down and let them dry after every ride, then hit them with some Febreze. Also, I hang mine up, so that they get a chance to air out between rides.
Hope that helps. Ride safe.
