What's this?

Icon Alliance GT Rubatone Helmet

Clandestine operations always rely on black to blend them into an unfamiliar darkness, cloaking them from prying eyes and unwitting authorities. Such could be said for the ultra stealthy Icon Alliance GT Rubatone helmet. Equipped Icon's latest Dropshield for easy getaways, imagine how jealous your friends will be when they see you drop the shield and jet for a clean getaway.

The Alliance GT adds a little bit of Top Gun to the classic Icon Alliance Helmet. Anyone who rides every day is familiar with the two-shield two-step. A dark shield to block the glaring sun of the morning commute is swapped out for clear shield on the way back. The Alliance GT kills this do-si-do with one fell swoop; rather one swipe to drop down a tinted inner sun shield. Beyond this clear (tinted) upgrade, the Alliance GT features all of the perks of the proven Alliance ranging from great ventilation coupled with a moisture wicking interior lining to a DOT / ECE safety rating.

Note: The Alliance GT has a fairly narrow internal shape. It is best for people who need more forehead room but conversely it is less suitable for people who need more room in the ear and temple area.

Features:

  • Injection molded polycarbonate shell for strength and durability
  • Includes Gold RST interchangeable internal DropShield
  • Wind tunnel tested and refined
  • Molded twin channel supervent for increased cooling
  • Rear exhaust ports prevent heat buildup
  • Removable molded breath deflector reduces shield fogging
  • Chin venting system reduces shield fogging
  • Fully removable/washable HydraDry interior
  • Quick-change fog-free Proshield with side plates
  • Prolock face shield locking system
  • Long oval headform
  • All world standard, meets or exceeds the following: DOT FMVSS 218 (US), ECE 22-05 (EUROPE), SAI AS1698 (Australia) and SG (Japan) safety and testing standards. Does not ship with SAI or SG certification stickers unless purchased from an authorized dealer in that country

Great helmet at a great price!
I was searching for a helmet that wouldn't break the bank but that would also have some of the features of a much more expensive helmet. I saw this helmet was new and had no reviews but my past experiences with Icon products has been excellent to say the least. I decided to pull the trigger and buy it. If I decided I didn't like it, I could return it thanks to Revzillas excellent return policy.

It arrived 2 days after I placed the order and I opened the packaging to try it out right away. I had ordered a size medium after measuring my head a couple of times and it fits absolutely perfect; nice and snug. Everything seems to be of great quality and nothing is flimsy or seems like it is going to break.

Now onto some of the features. If you are looking at buying this helmet, then you are probably wondering about the drop down sun visor. I think they got it just right with the design and the visor stays in the up or down position very securely. I wear a pair of prescription glasses and they fit under the visor perfectly. This brings me to my next point; this helmet so far has been excellent for me as a person who wears glasses. Not only can i use the sun visor but there also seems to be room for the frame of my glasses so that they are not getting crushed against my head( this happened with my previous helmet and would start to become quite painful after a while).

Since this is an Icon helmet, it also has a fog proof visor( not sure about the sun visor though). I found the airflow to be adequate; the front vent does an excellent job but the top vents didn't do as good. With that being said it still flowed a lot of air. I ride a Harley Davidson Sportster and have a windshield attached to it and this helmet also works great with that as well. There is a lot less buffeting with this helmet and head checks don't rip your head off.

All in all I think this helmet is one of the best values for the money. You get a lot of features such as good airflow, fog proof visor, drop down sun visor, and good aerodynamics. I feel like this is some of the best money I've spent in a long time and theres no doubt that it looks amazing with that gold drop down visor!

A solid choice so long as you know how to adapt to a few things.
Overall, I am very happy with making the decision to purchase this helmet. The mirrored drop-down visor is amazing. Even with it down and the main shield open, the wind did not blast me in the eyes. The helmet looks amazing inside and out.
Switched my ride from a Ruckus (50cc) to a Morphous (250cc)...this was my new highway speed helmet.
My personal downside comments about the helmet:
- hat size 7 3/8 and I bought a large, still fits super tight. I should have tried and XL. Getting on and off was sometimes a struggle.
- I installed a Chatterbox X2 Slim P com-unit. There are "pockets" speakers, but they are not recessed. My ears don't stick out, but every time I put it on, my ears folded over (annoying). Kinda sucked having to squeeze my index finger in & try to flip them back up.
- Not sure why, but top air vents changed after a couple uses & now hardly any air flows through them when open. I need to have it looked at to make sure the vents are functioning correctly.
- This helmet is loud. Even with the pin-lock visor and plugs, wind noise was abrasive and a challenge.
- Chin skirt not included. I had to make my own by modifying the one on my Sparx Demonica helmet. Once added, talking on the comm was a breeze.
- Lastly, the inner liner is great for wicking away sweat.... but it's a light color and begins to look dirty really quick. I'm a super clean person and it made me question my hygiene. They should make it black instead of white.
Despite the things that I consider to be issues, the overall style and cost made them tolerable. Excellent choice if you size right, ride at low speeds, and wear white gloves when handling the liner.
I'm critical, but recommend it as a good buy.

brain bucket for a noob
I've had this thing for about six months now and about 8600 miles later, here's what I've found:

1) The dropdown visor does exactly what it says it does. It drops down and helps block sun. And you get to look kinda like Master Chief. Be weary though, the anti-fogness this helmet touts does NOT apply to the dropdown visor. Just open the chin vent and it won't matter. Besides you don't have to lug around a different visor for day/night so what are you complaining about?

2) It has a whopping three! (3) air vents to keep your noodle cool. The chin vent works decently. For a while I thought the top vents were useless and then it got cold out. Felt like someone had jammed ice cubes inside the helmet. Luckily opening/closing all vents works spectacularly.

3) Certainly not the quietest helmet in the world, but I also commute about 80 miles a day on highways going 70-80mph so I'm probably not the best person to ask. Luckily, ear plugs are a thing that exist, so it doesn't really matter to me.

4) Believe everyone that tells you this is a long oval helmet. It is. I should have probably gone for a intermediate oval, but I tried on an XL and got the Alliance GT anyway. My cheeks are a little squished when I ride, but even after a few hours of riding, it's not that uncomfortable.

5) Removing the comfort liner is simple and easy and since it's a very light gray color, it'll blacken with your face crust in no time flat! Which on one hand is pretty gross, on the other hand, it's a decent reminder to wash the liner often. Which brings me to an important question: Do you like the smell of baby shampoo? Yes? Then purchase this helmet immediately. If following the cleaning instructions properly, you hand wash the comfort liner in warm water with baby shampoo. After a nice thorough wash, you can rinse as much as you want, it doesn't matter, the next few rides Johnson & Johnson are going to be having a party in your helmet.

6) Did you say comfort liner? Yes, but I didn't say chin curtain. Chin curtains are extra. $7 extra. Which would have changed the price of the helmet WAY too much to include it. Don't worry, I ended up buying that too and it does help reduce airflow inside the helmet for colder weather, although it makes putting on/taking off the helmet SLIGHTLY trickier. And it's a huge pain to install.

7) The Alliance GT doesn't play well in the rain. But it's cool, just look to the left or the right and watch the water droplets glide off the visor! (Seriously, it works). Unfortunately, I can't say I'd recommend the Alliance GT for scuba diving or rainy riding.

8) This is a $200 DOT/ECE rated helmet. For the price and features (even the ones that don't work that well), you really can't beat it.

Good value for $200
Fit seems slightly small, but fitting better as it gets worn. Like the coating; doesn't show fingerprints and still cleans easily. Visor drops easily with gloved hand. Good value for a sub-200 helmet. I have a lot of Icon gear, and it's all well made...solid stuff.

Great Value
Just finished a 4000 mile road trip and really enjoyed the helmet. There is a glare from the reflective dropdown sun visor which can be eliminated by replacing it with a non reflective visor (an additional purchase). Hence, I used the non reflective visor during the road trip. The helmet kept me dry during the rain, cool during hot weather, warm when it was cold, and prevented wind and sun burns. It can fog up a bit during extremely humid weather but this goes away if you open the shield slightly. I wear my bulky prescription glasses with the helmet and the dropdown sun visor clears them easily. You may experience difficulty putting wire-frame glasses on while wearing the helmet. My preference is for more airflow than what the vents allow (this is my first full face helmet), so I typically have the proshield open a bit. Noises in front of the helmet are dramatically reduced (e.g., radio); however, noises from below are still quite loud (e.g., exhaust). Earplugs are recommended at higher speeds. Communication with other riders/passengers is challenging without the use of comms - and tends to result in rude gesturing or yelling (which will come back to bite you in the butt if you aren't wearing earplugs). I believe there is room for comms but haven't tried any out yet. The exterior is easy enough to clean. The interior pads claim to be hand washable... This is a good helmet overall and I would recommend it to others enthusiastically.

Great helmet
I've owned many helmets and this has been one of the best, despite being only $200. Looks good, fits good, seems to be made of good quality materials. I've never crashed with it so I can't say how it holds up, but like I said it feels like a solid, good quality helmet that will protect you if you go down. Noise isn't too bad even at highways speeds. My only complaints are that the paint chips easy if you drop it and the air vents on the top open up by themselves at high speeds. 9/10 would recommend.

Feature loaded lid
This is my first helmet of my own as when I rode as a teenager I used someone else's Harley helmet. I had never used a full face helmet prior so it took some getting used to. Once I got over the claustrophobic feeling I really enjoyed all the features this helmet has to offer.

Ventilation- to me there seems to be lots of air moving through the helmet. The from vent by the mouth does a great job at keeping the visors from fogging up, but I still end up opening the visor for more airflow at stops. The top vents work I'm sure, but I can't really feel it as much as the front vent.

Visor- locks well, but will shut on its own at speed which i am not crazy about. The built in visor is where this helmet shines though! Besides the fighter pilot vibe it puts off it is just an awesome feature. I will never by a helmet without this from now on. Not only does it dim light, but it allows you increased ventilation without risking bugs and debris hitting your eyes at speed!

Fit- My head size was right between large and x-large. I went with large, and it was really tight. so much so my ears get bent down overtime i put it on. Not sure if that is a full face thing or not, but from the research i did prior to purchasing it seemed like a tighter fit was better than a looser one. It is starting to break in now and is easier to get on and off, but still snug. I want to install a Sena, but am not sure it will fit with my previously stated ear issues, and i don't want to spend the money and not be able to return it if it doesn't fit with this helmet.

Aesthetics- I went with the Rubatone and it is great quality. Easy to clean bugs off, and it doesn't show fingerprints easy like a glossy helmet would.

Noise- Its pretty darn noisy, but they sell a chin curtain you can add which will hopefully cut down on the noise. I think it should have been included though (more useful than the helmet storage bag it comes with).

Comfort- Once its on its very comfortable albeit a little heavy. Not sure if its just the newness of riding and wearing a helmet or what, but after some 45 minute rides my neck hurts a bit. Could be from my bikes windscreen not offering enough protection, but add the buffeting and the weight together and its tiring. For the price though it is worth the extra weight.

Safety- DOT certified, hopefully I never have to experience how well it holds up. It does feel high quality.

Very good helmet
The cheekpads were a little tight at fist but they do break in and you can buy different size ones from Icon. The helmet is quite loud but this is the only helmet I've ever worn so I don't know how it really compares to others. The drop down sun shield is a must! I love the ability so drop it down when the sun gets in my eyes and pop it back up when it isn't for better visibility. Nice soft block texture on the outside of the helmet.

I tired it on at a shop, and it's the most comfortable fitting helmet I've tried on. It's a bit elongated, so I bought one size up from my current helmet, and it fits nicely around the neck and under my head (feels good and secure), but it doesn't feel tight and constrained around the sides of my head like it usually does in other helmets. That fit, combined with the drop shield, and the sleek matte black helmet, sold the helmet for me.
Hunter W on Jun 3, 2016
Economically priced helmet with good reviews. The inner drop sun shield should negate needing to routinely swap the shield, or so I'm hoping. Matte black is a great canvas to put my own designs on.

my head measured 22", should i buy the SM or MD??????????

Is this helmet compatible with Bluetooth communication systems? Is there a place to put earphone, microphone, etc?
Andrew P on Mar 8, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Using a Chatterbox X2 Slim-P set..everything goes in w/o any issues. However, speakers go behind cheek pad liner and there is no cut-out. This puts them right against your ears, which is great for hearing. But this sucks for catching your ears and pinching them over.
Does the drop down shield interfere with glasses?
A shopper on Apr 9, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Sorry it took so long to answer. I rode today with full size framed prescription glasses that I use mostly for night. I dropped the shade and no problem. Great helmet it. Love it and my airmada.
Does a black face shield come with this helmet?
A C on Nov 28, 2016
BEST ANSWER: The helmet comes with a clear shield and a gold internal sun visor. It looks very slick.
Can you have the dropshield down while the main shield is up? Let's sat you get hot and want to get some air in but still want eye protection.
A C on May 30, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Yes you can, but it's not necessary. The helmet has two vents on the top and another near your month. As soon as you begin moving, there is plenty of are displacement within the helmet. So it's not worth the risk of riding with the main shield up. This past weekend it was in the 80's and I was very comfortable wearing the helmet as long as I was moving. It's a great helmet for the cost. I would highly recommend it to anyone.
Does the drop down shield interfere with glasses?
Will L on Apr 9, 2016
BEST ANSWER: The drop down shield does not interfere with my glasses. This might vary a bit depending on the shape of your face and style of your glasses. For me, there is just over an inch between my glasses and the shield.
Looking through the drop-down sun visor, is it gray-ish or is it amber in color? (I'd love to see an amber sun visor someday--especially on a modular.)
A S on Mar 9, 2016
BEST ANSWER: It's gray-ish (standard sunglass like tint) and not at all amberish like the exterior mirror
Would this be good in an upright ridding style (i.e. Cruiser)?
A shopper on Dec 4, 2017
BEST ANSWER: I am using it on my KLR and it works well. I wouldn't hesitate to use it for a cruiser.
