Icon Alliance GT Rubatone Helmet

Clandestine operations always rely on black to blend them into an unfamiliar darkness, cloaking them from prying eyes and unwitting authorities. Such could be said for the ultra stealthy Icon Alliance GT Rubatone helmet. Equipped Icon's latest Dropshield for easy getaways, imagine how jealous your friends will be when they see you drop the shield and jet for a clean getaway.

The Alliance GT adds a little bit of Top Gun to the classic Icon Alliance Helmet. Anyone who rides every day is familiar with the two-shield two-step. A dark shield to block the glaring sun of the morning commute is swapped out for clear shield on the way back. The Alliance GT kills this do-si-do with one fell swoop; rather one swipe to drop down a tinted inner sun shield. Beyond this clear (tinted) upgrade, the Alliance GT features all of the perks of the proven Alliance ranging from great ventilation coupled with a moisture wicking interior lining to a DOT / ECE safety rating.

Note: The Alliance GT has a fairly narrow internal shape. It is best for people who need more forehead room but conversely it is less suitable for people who need more room in the ear and temple area.

Features:

  • Injection molded polycarbonate shell for strength and durability
  • Includes Gold RST interchangeable internal DropShield
  • Wind tunnel tested and refined
  • Molded twin channel supervent for increased cooling
  • Rear exhaust ports prevent heat buildup
  • Removable molded breath deflector reduces shield fogging
  • Chin venting system reduces shield fogging
  • Fully removable/washable HydraDry interior
  • Quick-change fog-free Proshield with side plates
  • Prolock face shield locking system
  • Long oval headform
  • All world standard, meets or exceeds the following: DOT FMVSS 218 (US), ECE 22-05 (EUROPE), SAI AS1698 (Australia) and SG (Japan) safety and testing standards. Does not ship with SAI or SG certification stickers unless purchased from an authorized dealer in that country

Good starter helmet, but...
This helmet has great features and it got me out on the road feeling safe and stylish for a very reasonable price. The downside is that I only got 2 good years, or about 6000 miles out of it. I'm still confident that in an accident it would have performed as intended, but the components lack overall durability.

The fit and finish quickly started to degrade despite taking great care in maintaining it. Being my first experience with a matte black finish I have nothing to compare it too, but I should mention that after a few buggy rides it was never the same. Any foreign substance or unintentional contact seemed to leave a permanent mark of some kind or another.

I will never go without an internal visor for daytime street riding after using this helmet. I'm glad I chose this feature. But unfortunately, the outside temperature played a role on how smoothly it operated.

I suspect too that the cold temperatures I ride in may have also caused the gaskets around the face shield and the rubber trim around the bottom of the shell to pull away from the glue holding them in place causing an unsightly and irreparable situation . This is ultimately why I decided to retire the helmet after such a short time.

I wish the Icon Alliance GT Rubatone would have had a better lifespan. If nothing else, it introduced me to a number of great features and a style I will be looking for in a more premium level helmet. For the money, I'm glad I gave it a shot.

Good first helmet
Got it as a first helmet had it for a year now and I still love it. My girlfriend liked it so much that she got herself the shaguar for her birthday. Can be alittle loud at freeway speeds but around not too bad. The only complaint I have is the chin vent creeks when I open it and it feels like it’s gonna break.

Nice full face melon protector
The cheek pads were too tight for the size but easily replaced with thinner sizes. I bought a medium helmet based on crown measurement, and had to scale cheek pads to 2XL for a comfortable fit. Love the internal sun visor. The face shield lock can be troublesome to open with one hand.

This helmet can be ROUND
My head is exceptionally round, I've had difficulty with ski, bicycle, and other motorcycle helmets. I tried 3 helmets listed as round oval on Revzilla and no luck so I finally bit the bullet and drove an hour to the closest bike shop with a proper selection. I tried on every helmet in the store before this one as Icon is known for their narrow helmets.

The XXLarge fit me perfectly. The size chart has it listed as 63-65 cm but I've measured my head at 60 cm and own a bicycle helmet and a dirtbike helmet that are both 59-60 cm. In most helmets I can size up until my temples arent being squeezed but by then the helmet is rocking back and forth with room in the forehead and back. Not this one, it is one of the best fitting helmets I've owned. Moral being, don't follow the size charts like a law.

If you have an odd shaped head like mine, your best bet is to go in and try on EVERY helmet.

As for the helmet itself, seems aerodynamic, shoulder checks are comfortable. Drop down visor is actually functional and an ideal tint in my opinion (also looks sweet). Noise volume is tolerable, just get some earplugs. I spoke with a revzilla rep who was very helpful, he said you're not going to find true noise reduction in a helmet for less than $400. The helmet certainly doesn't feel heavy, though I haven't worn it for longer than an hour. All in all I'm happy with my purchase.

Ear ringing LOUD
I bought this helmet to replace my 5 year old scorpion exo 500 after the drop down sun visor mechanism broke and the padding started to wear. I chose this one based on its similar features, mainly the drop down visor, along with its price and mostly good reviews. I really want to like this helmet, it fits me great, is comfortable, relatively light, and looks good. However this helmet is LOUD. Anything under 45-50 mph is fine, but once you hit the highway, the wind gets up underneath it and makes a ton of noise. This helmet fits me properly and squeezes my cheeks so that's not the issue. A 15 minute on the highway at 70mph will leave your ears ringing. Again I like everything else about this helmet but the noise is unbearable. If I could return it I would, but I've had it for about a week and have already worn and ridden with it so that's no longer an option. Should have read the reviews more closely and put the $200 towards a better more expensive helmet.

Long Oval Heads Beware
I stopped wearing helmets years ago because I always experienced painful pressure on the front of my forehead. Now that I’m getting a little older (48); I worry about my hearing from all the wind noise of only wearing a ball cap backwards. Figured I would try once again to find a helmet. Wasn't until I came across Revzilla did I realize they made helmets in different shapes, and people with long oval heads experience the pressure on their foreheads like I do from regular helmets. Hallelujah! I thought I finally knew why I've always had issues, and my head wasn't that badly deformed after all. LoL

After watching a ton of videos, I decided on the Icon Alliance GT Rubatone. Since I had a trip coming up, I ordered a size up (just to make sure it wouldn't hurt like previous helmets) and paid the extra $ for next day shipping hoping to get it in time. Sadly it came the day after I left, so I didn't get to try it until I got back. Soon as I put the helmet on I still felt the helmet putting pressure on my forehead. After wearing the helmet for 20 minutes, it feels like it’s starting to cut into my head and leaves a small red mark. How can this be? Yes, my head is a little slimmer and longer, but it’s not freaky or deformed looking. I started to do a little research and noticed the manufactures website says the Alliance GT is intermediate oval, NOT long oval as Revzilla shows. I emailed Icon asking who was correct on the shape, and they said Revzilla has it listed wrong. They said the Alliance GT was an intermediate oval which would explain why I was getting the pressure. Icon suggested the Airmada may be a better fit for me since it was manufactured to be a true long oval helmet. So I ordered the Icon Airmada one size down (my correct size) and it fits like a dream. For the first time I don’t feel the helmet digging into my forehead. I just wish the Airmada had the drop down visor like the Alliance GT.

Revzilla has the Alliance GT listed as Long Oval. Icon and my head say it fits like an intermediate oval. Will the GT fit you if you normally experience pressure with most helmets? Maybe. I just know the GT didn’t work for me, and the Airmada was a better fit.

Good helmet and good price. Fits ok, just slightly tight around the cheeks. Or maybe its just the paddings.

I like it a lot
For a full face helmet it still breathable when moving but when staying still it can get a little hot in helmet. It fits perfectly and is well balanced, the internal sun visor is a definite helping hand I’m the usability of it. Would definitely recommend.

Icon Alliance GT
Overall, very nice helmet especially for the price! Only issues were that my cheeks were smushed with the size small but everywhere else in the helmet felt fine. So I ordered the size medium cheek pads and now it is just a hair to loose in the cheek area(still doable and how I plan on keeping it). Another thing is the pin lock is difficult to open with one hand while riding. Majority of the time I have to stop, us one hand to open the visor and the other hand on the chin of the helmet to resist. It could be due to the fact that the helmet doesn’t fit completely snug around the cheek area on me. I can tell that the pin lock prevents the visor from fogging up though, so it is a good feature. Lastly, I wanted a helmet that I could swap shields quick and easy. This helmet isn’t bad but I’m definitely not a fan of how you have to pry the side covers off of the shield(it feels like you’re going to break them every time). Nonetheless, I’m pretty satisfied with this purchase!

I tired it on at a shop, and it's the most comfortable fitting helmet I've tried on. It's a bit elongated, so I bought one size up from my current helmet, and it fits nicely around the neck and under my head (feels good and secure), but it doesn't feel tight and constrained around the sides of my head like it usually does in other helmets. That fit, combined with the drop shield, and the sleek matte black helmet, sold the helmet for me.
Hunter W on Jun 3, 2016
Economically priced helmet with good reviews. The inner drop sun shield should negate needing to routinely swap the shield, or so I'm hoping. Matte black is a great canvas to put my own designs on.

I was between this and the Airmada. I tried one of these on locally and it seemed to fit well. My only concern is the ventillation. I would actually love to talk to someone who has tried both, but haven't been able to find one or any comparisons.

BEST ANSWER: No, this helmet is not snell rated. You can check smf_dot_org/cert
my head measured 22", should i buy the SM or MD??????????
Stephen M on Nov 6, 2016
BEST ANSWER: i would go for a size up. I was the same but between a large and xl. I went with the large and wished I had gone a size up.
Is this helmet compatible with Bluetooth communication systems? Is there a place to put earphone, microphone, etc?
Andrew P on Mar 8, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Using a Chatterbox X2 Slim-P set..everything goes in w/o any issues. However, speakers go behind cheek pad liner and there is no cut-out. This puts them right against your ears, which is great for hearing. But this sucks for catching your ears and pinching them over.
Does the drop down shield interfere with glasses?
A shopper on Apr 9, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Sorry it took so long to answer. I rode today with full size framed prescription glasses that I use mostly for night. I dropped the shade and no problem. Great helmet it. Love it and my airmada.
Does a black face shield come with this helmet?
A C on Nov 28, 2016
BEST ANSWER: The helmet comes with a clear shield and a gold internal sun visor. It looks very slick.
Can you have the dropshield down while the main shield is up? Let's sat you get hot and want to get some air in but still want eye protection.
A C on May 30, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Yes you can, but it's not necessary. The helmet has two vents on the top and another near your month. As soon as you begin moving, there is plenty of are displacement within the helmet. So it's not worth the risk of riding with the main shield up. This past weekend it was in the 80's and I was very comfortable wearing the helmet as long as I was moving. It's a great helmet for the cost. I would highly recommend it to anyone.
Does the drop down shield interfere with glasses?
Will L on Apr 9, 2016
BEST ANSWER: The drop down shield does not interfere with my glasses. This might vary a bit depending on the shape of your face and style of your glasses. For me, there is just over an inch between my glasses and the shield.
Looking through the drop-down sun visor, is it gray-ish or is it amber in color? (I'd love to see an amber sun visor someday--especially on a modular.)
A S on Mar 9, 2016
BEST ANSWER: It's gray-ish (standard sunglass like tint) and not at all amberish like the exterior mirror
Would this be good in an upright ridding style (i.e. Cruiser)?
A shopper on Dec 4, 2017
BEST ANSWER: I am using it on my KLR and it works well. I wouldn't hesitate to use it for a cruiser.
