What's this?

Icon Airframe Pro Halo Carbon Helmet

The Icon Airframe Pro Halo Carbon Helmet is straight space age insanity. Engineered to be in precise harmony with you, your bike and the environment, the aerodynamically sound handmade 4Tress carbon fiber shell has been designed to promote stability in the sport riding position. Truly a classic in the making, the Airframe Pro is worthy of the top shelf, serving up ultra refined goodness for your dome. The Halo graphic gives you a color pallet to fly your team colors and an included Tracshield means this lid is race ready right out of the box.

The modern riding position of higher rear sets and lower clip-ons has dramatically altered how a rider interacts with the modern motorcycle. Compressed into an ever more compact shape, the rider’s head positioning requires an increased angle to maintain visibility and stability. The Icon Airframe Pro Helmet has been built on this singular design focus which allows Icon to realize opportunities to decrease drag and weight by sculpting the traditional neckline to avoid jacket or suit interference. The Icon Airframe Helmet's aggressive geometry increases the line of sight while improving aerodynamic attitude in a fully-tucked riding posture.

The dramatically reduced shell profile, comprised of aerospace-grade carbon fiber (FRP) features a track-recognized ECE certification. Precision assembly techniques further this dedication to mass reduction, allowing Icon to craft a helmet that is exceptionally light and peerlessly outfitted. Internally, the traditional three-piece liner has been upgraded to a five-piece liner, providing a greater amount of fitment combinations for each unique head shape. Crown, lateral, fore and aft padding components allow for a possibility of 27 fitment combinations in a single shell, double that of the Icon Airframe's competitors.

Both internally and externally, the Icon Airframe Pro Helmet is optimized for the Angle of Attack.

Features:

  • Handmade 4Tress carbon fiber shell
  • Four unique shell sizes for minimized mass and drag
  • Sculpted neck roll reduces jacket/suit interference
  • Five-piece modular liner with moisture-wicking HydraDry
  • Linear ported forehead vents
  • Low-profile vents throughout the shell
  • Fog-free Icon Optics face shield with Rapid-Release release system
  • Tracshield tear-off compatible face shield included
  • Prolock positive shield locking system
  • Removable breath deflector and chin curtain
  • All world standard, meets or exceeds the following: DOT FMVSS 218 (US), ECE 22-05 (EUROPE), SAI AS1698 (Australia) and SG (Japan) safety and testing standards. Does not ship with SAI or SG certification stickers unless purchased from an authorized dealer in that country

Note: Helmet ships with both clear Optics and dark smoke Tracshield face shields.

Top tier helmet, great bargain, but has some caveats
This helmet is without doubt a top tier design, packed with great features and a superb value for what it cost. It is an extremely well designed, highly aerodynamic, incredibly light helmet that is ECE rated for safety. It's impressive in almost every way and I absolutely love it - easily my favorite helmet and I've had a few. Let's review some of the features and go over some of the caveats - most aren't dealbreakers but you should very much be aware of them.

The fit is snug, much like all Icon gear (people in Portland must be smaller) but it breaks in. It's also more true-to-size than other Icon gear. I'm on that awkward line between L and XL in most other helmet designs, and I'm squarely on the XL in this helmet. Head shape is intermediate to longish oval and it is obnoxiously comfortable with zero hot spots. The padding is tight (some call it race fit or whatever) and I recommend giving it time to break in before buying the extra pads for fitments (unless it's really that bad). They break in somewhat and the pads really keep things nice and snug and comfortable. The centerline pad (I call it the mohawk pad) has a tendency to pop out in the front, just behind the visor, when you remove the helmet. It hasn't happened while riding (head pressure probably keeps it in) so it's not a big deal but it should really be more secure. It's nothing a tiny bit of Velcro wouldn't fix.

There's a few accessories, like the breath/nose guard and the chin curtain. The chin curtain is basically useless. The upper nose/fog/breath guard is extremely effective at preventing fogging on the visor. The inner lining is plush and comfortable.

The visor has an antifog coating. After a month in Florida it hasn't fogged. Helmet visibility is outstanding - the design is optimized for various forms of tuck so don't expect 'down' viz to be great if you're sitting up straight. An adv helmet this is not. Aero is also specifically designed for tuck - it reacts badly to a straight up-and-down orientation so you have to at the very least dip your chin. The visor secures with this primitive metal pin that almost requires two hands to operate.

Ventilation is amazing. You can't close out this helmet completely, but you can certainly open it up a lot. Tons of venting options and nooks and crannies, it also has a set of vents that can't be closed so you're always going to deal with the environment. What this means: if it's hot out you're gonna breathe easy and get plenty of airflow... And if it's cold out you're gonna suck cold air. That isn't a positive thing IMHO. I sometimes miss the ability to "close up" when the weather gets funky or when I just don't feel like having fumes forcibly inducted into my lungs at highway speeds. That aside I've never, ever had a sweaty head.

It's light. Crazy light. Lightest helmet on the market and it's pretty significant. I've compared it to an AGV k3sv and an rf1200 and it's bananas how much lighter it is than both of these. The reduced neck strain is something I didn't know was a thing until suddenly I stopped having neck strain because it's really just that light. The difference between the carbon fiber and the regular composite is claimed at only 3oz, so ymmv on this especially with the cost differential.

It isn't an exceptionally quiet helmet. The AGV k3sv and rf1200 are both quieter, especially the rf1200. With the venting open it has noise, and even closed up it has noise. It's not super loud, but it can be much much worse when you attach a Bluetooth unit, which leads to my final point of description.

Bluetooth units do not easily mount to this helmet. Sena units and similar units that utilize a 'clamp' method of attachment will not fit this helmet correctly. This includes the SMH10 and 20 units with the rotary wheel, and probably the Cardo units as well. I've attempted to mount the clamp style units to the side and it's possible but the helmets aerodynamic shape prevents the unit from sitting flat and flush. If you force the issue it will bend and cause the unit to simply not work correctly, and if you don't it'll cause so much air disruption on the left side that the noise levels inside become significantly worse. The airfoil/lip along the bottom also risks damage due to the clamps pressure. There's a stick-on style assembly that comes with these units that also doesn't work because of the shape of the helmet. Simply put, the clamp style Bluetooth units do not fit this helmet. I've ordered the low-profile smh10 unit that sticks to the side without a clamp, hopefully it'll fit.

There are no cutouts for speakers though this isn't a big deal - the speakers can be "placed" just fine. There's room. The padding does, however, cover the speaker/ear area and so I trimmed the padding to expose the speaker. This improved audio volume and quality significantly - otherwise the speakers are inaudible over 75mph, which renders them basically useless.

For $600 it's a great deal on a cf helmet.

Amazing helmet for every day use
I purchased this helmet a few weeks ago and absolutely love it.
Pros:
Weighs nothing
Great fit
Comes with a clear and tinted lens
Aerodynamics, almost no wind pull on this helmet

Cons:
Price
No flip down tinted visor

The only real drawback for me is the lack of flip down visor, but it hasn't really been an issue yet. When it's sunny I toss the tinted visor on, when it's not, I put the clear one on. The process is extremely easy with these, takes ~15 seconds to swap the lens.

The spoiler on the back makes a bigger difference than expected. Compared to my last helmet, this one has almost no wind noise and almost no drag. It is a quieter helmet, but I still recommend wearing ear plugs with it at highway speeds.

Noticibly light and aerodynamic
I bought this helmet to ease the load on my neck as I have a few issues. The weight difference is immediately noticeable when you put it on. You normally don't think about aerodynamics on a street helmet, but this helmet makes you take notice. I have several bikes with small windshields and a naked bike. The bikes with shields direct turbulent, accelerated air to your head and upper body. With this Icon Airframe helmet the buffeting and turbulence was all but gone, thus significantly reducing neck strain. The cutout in the back of the helmet works great to eliminate interference with my ADV type jacket and leathers. The shield is very clear and hardly fogs, but the pin lock is a pain to release in stop and go traffic. It was great on the one track day because of the aforementioned aerodynamics. Ventilation is the best of any helmet I have owned in the last 37 years of street riding. I normally wear a Large in Long oval helmets. I bought a large, and had to order the Large Looser liner set. Negatives are drafty in cold weather and very loud (wear earplugs). I liked it so much I bought my daughter a non-carbon version. As usual, Revzila great customer service and price matching!

Have the Halo CF and it delivers
I want to mention that the red in the photo is a lot deeper red that what you get in real life. It's almost orange when you receive it, doesn't matter to me, just worth bringing up.
I had an old school Icon Manic (2005 model?) and this one is definitely a whole new beast in several of the key areas:
-Weight, noticable differnce between the two helmets, both L.
-Aerodynamics, wind deflection and resonance in gusts is completely gone with this Airframe Pro.
-Fitment, much tighter, race fit, cheek pads are probably half an inch tighter on each side.
-Venting, flows much more air, the chin vent flows a ton of air straight up into the visor.
-Vision, I spend a lot of time in full tuck and the view is noticeably expanded.

Overall a CF helmet that can be had on sale, loaded with all of these features is a steal. If you're okay with the graphic deign you'll love this lid.

If only the padding kits were available...
Like the review video says, you really want to have the padding kit as well. Unfortunately, they aren't available until late December! Sent my helmet back as the cheek pads were wayyyyy too tight, and I'd have to wait 2+ months for the fitment kit.

does this helmet have ece certification sticker?
A shopper on May 10, 2016
BEST ANSWER: If it does I haven't found it. It's probably under the liner somewhere but it is definitely ECE certified, per Icon.
I really want to know the real colour of this helmet! Orange or red? Please tell me the true!
Moon07 on Mar 23, 2016
BEST ANSWER: It's an orangey red. Or a dark dark orange that tints towards red. Looks great.
