Good product, poor installation instructions, & a gotcha!
I’ve installed other Givi parts before and Givi has a well-deserved reputation for being high-quality, well-designed products. Also the motorcycle-specific mounting hardware is first rate. That’s the good news.

The bad news is that the installation instructions are obtuse to be point of being cryptic. They try to tell you how to do the installation with exploded diagrams and nothing more. This isn’t too bad if you happen to work in a motorcycle shop or you have lots of experience installing after-market add-ons. On the other hand, if you are an average guy trying to do this the first time, expect to have trouble understanding the installation instructions.

Before you install this mounting bracket, you must relocate the rear turn signal lights. Givi provides a bracket for this and a diagram of where the bracket goes, but the is absolutely no information about how to actually relocate the lights or how to re-route the wiring. This is not hard to do, but if you don’t happen have a BMW R nine T service manual, figuring this out on your own will be daunting.

Once you’ve managed to relocate the turn signals, the installation is fairly straight-forward and easy except for one great big gotcha.

Givi’s bracket only fits the right side of the R nine T … there is no left-side bracket available even though you can buy the Multilock Metro-T saddlebags in pairs. (Revzilla’s web description has now been modified to show this, earlier it did not explicitly make this point.)

Not to fear, there is a way to mount both saddlebags if you have, or know somebody with a grinder and welder. The heart of the Givi saddle bag mounting bracket is basically a 6mm mild steel rod formed into a loop with two mushroom shaped buttons on the bottom. If you are handy in the shop you can fabricate this yourself, or if you have a extra 80 bucks, just by a second bracket and modify it. This can be done in an average shop in about two hours or less with another day or so of sanding and repainting.

Now the caveat. The reason Givi doesn’t provide a left-side bracket is that the standard exhaust on the R nine T is too close to the bag which is possibly be a fire hazard. The fix here is to either install an after-market low exhaust or to modify the rack to carry the bags slightly higher. The first option is expensive unless you want to improve the exhaust anyway. The second requires modifying the bracket sides to carry the bags about an inch higher.
