Garmin VIRB XE Action Camera

The VIRB XE has the ability to shoot stunning high definition video in 1440p30, 1080p60 and 720p120, VIRB XE is ready to capture your experiences in vivid detail. Featuring a custom, all-glass lens, high resolutions, zoom levels and high frame rates up to 240FPS (480p), VIRB XE ensures you get the shots you need. Manual camera controls like white balance and exposure biasing unlock even greater flexibility in your video.

With a dedicated photo button and the ability to shoot wide-angle 12-megapixel photos at speeds up to 30 frames per second, VIRB XE is designed to get capture the most intense moments. You can even capture photos while recording video. VIRB XE can also be set to automatically capture photos over long periods of time at customizable intervals up to 120 seconds. With Extended Timelapse, VIRB XE will sleep between shots, allowing you to maximize your battery life for exceptionally long captures. VIRB XE contains motion sensors to detect camera movements and helps keep your shot steady. Electronic image stabilization reduces camera shake and blur whether you’re bouncing over harsh terrain or gliding through calm waters.

Capture more than just a video of the moment with G-Metrix. VIRB XE contains built-in Garmin GPS, G-force, orientation sensors and the ability to wirelessly connect to external sensors and Garmin devices to capture even more performance data. Play your experience back in higher definition than ever before by using our free mobile or desktop software to automatically overlay gauges, graphs and more, showcasing your speed, acceleration, heart rate (and much more) in real time.

VIRB XE is ready to dive deep (up to 50 meters) without the need for additional equipment or cases. Its tough, compact design is ready to withstand the elements with an exposed microphone that records clean and clear audio that cameras in cases just can’t pick up. Thanks to a hydrophobic, flat, glass lens, underwater shots are crystal clear while transitions in and out of the water stay unobstructed by droplets.

Connect one or more VIRB XE cameras to the Garmin VIRB Mobile App on your compatible smartphone or tablet. This gives you the ability to line up your shot with live video preview, control and view multiple cameras, playback and edit recorded footage, overlay G-Metrix data and push your videos to the cloud. VIRB XE can even be controlled, configured and viewed from a compatible Garmin device.

Equipped with Bluetooth 4.0, VIRB XE can connect directly to wireless Bluetooth headsets or microphones to capture audio in high definition. Whether you’re further away from your camera, or you’d rather capture your motorcycle commentary, VIRB XE ensures your audio needs are covered.

Powered full time, beats GoPro
After years of owning a GoPro 2 and not being able to run it hard wired in its waterproof case and the incredible short battery life and with a remote that also eats batteries within 2 hours, I decided to try the Virb XE.

I bought the rugged power supply and hard wired it and mounted it to the crash bars on my GS. I can run the camera on the bike as long as I want and it's waterproof. And I can switch it to my helmet then back to hard mount when the battery runs out. And the remote uses a little CR type battery that lasts months. Those two features that GoPro can't yet pull off "out of the box" are reason enough to use this Garmin. I can't tell you how many times my batteries on the GoPro camera or the remote were dead and I missed some great footage.

Also, you can pick to take photo or video on the fly from the remote. Awesome feature. GoPro requires you to fiddle with the actual camera and change a setting from video to photo. That's BS.

I'm not making movies for the iMax theater so the video and pic quality is great for my use.

Also, the iPhone app lets me see the footage live via a mini wifi between the camera and phone if I want.

Only one issue is the case lens got really pitted after 2 days riding in the dirt. And that's riding solo and not eating anyone's dirt. Now I ordered a new front lens and replaceable screen protectors.

I'm baffled as to why this didn't take off. GoPro just has better marketing as the user features lag behind this Garmin. I'm waiting for the next price drop on clearance and am going to grab one to mount rear facing so I can get video of my wife on her GS in the dirt!

Buy the Virb Elite Instead
I've used two Garmin Virb Elites for more than a year on my Kawasaki KLR650 (front and rear), and then I bought the Virb XE which is a big disappointment. Comparing the two models the Elite comes out on top in almost every category that is important on a motorcycle. There is too much lens flair and too much contrast on the XE, so the videos are not very useful if you are riding from shade to sun and back; but the rear shocker is the image stabilization which is much better on the Elite. The only advantage I see to the XE is that there are many more options and the maximum memory card size is twice as big; but none of that matters to me because the video quality is too poor. I can't comment on the battery life because I have the cams wired into my bike's electrical.
