The BEST soft armor you can get!
As I am writing this in July 2017, the Isolator 2 is still pretty new in the market. Actually, not much was known about it before I bought it. I had the pleasure of emailing Forcefield Armour's engineering department, and got the low down. In short, they designed the Isolator 2 to be their BEST protection series.
And that was something I wanted; the best protection. Unfortunately, I wasn't exactly sure what I would be getting. I don't know when YOU will be reading this, but when the Isolator 2 came out, there wasn't much information available.
For example, the photos showed it as yellow, but in real life it is orange.
From the preliminary photos, I wasn't sure if the Isolator 2 had a hard shell on the outside; I just couldn't tell!
So, after having their engineering department give me a lot of information, including how much energy the Isolator 2 passes, as well as all of the ratings on their product line, I decided to get it.
I got a full 'set': Elbows, knees, shoulders, hips.
I was very surprised at how comfortable they are to wear. They are much more pliable than I thought they would be.
This saying gets tossed around a lot, but in this case, it's true: Sometimes, I forget I even have these pads on! Seriously, I've got the knee pads in my kevlar riding jeans, and after riding a few minutes, they curve around my knees and are so soft, I have actually panicked a few times because I thought the armor had fallen out!! I literally could NOT tell it was there!
So, how well does the Isolator 2 protect? Well, that's hard to say, because I haven't been in a crash, and hope I never have to test them out... HOWEVER, I did have a chance to test the knee pads on a commute home the other day:
I was riding on an 8-lane freeway, about 70 mph. There was a lot of traffic. Out of nowhere, a HUGE rock got churned up by one of the trucks in front of me. I saw it coming. It was about the size of my fist, looked like a huge chunk of gravel, and I saw it coming for a split second; just long enough to think "Oh $hit, which part of my bike is that going to dent?"
Here's the weird thing: It didn't hit my bike. It hit ME. It hit my left knee. Thank God I had the Isolator 2s in my riding jeans. I felt the rock chunk hit my knee, and it felt... soft. It actually felt sort of soft. Like maybe somebody bumped into me lightly.
Now, I can't go back and find the rock and weigh it, and reconstruct the incident, but I can definitely tell you, without that knee pad, it would have "F'ed" up my knee! It was a BIG rock. I'm guessing it would have messed up my patella, caused some skin damage and bleeding.
But when the rock hit me, all I felt was a little bump on my knee. And it felt.. soft!
Don't forget, this 'rock' was as big as a fist, and I was riding 70mph!
So, that's the closest I've come to 'testing' the armor, and it was good enough to make me a believer! As far as 'soft' armor goes, I do not think there is anything better, from any company, right now on the market.
I would recommend the Isolator 2 to anyone! I am completely upgrading all of my gear with Isolator 2. If I have pants or a jacket with a pocket meant for padding, you better bet I'm changing it out with a Forcefield Isolator 2!
Best protection, very comfortable, just buy it and save your body!!!
Ride safe, everyone!
