Worth every penny
And that's not very many pennies compared to the competition. I bought this specifically to use with phone based navigation (WAZE) so I could keep my non-waterproof phone safely inside my jacket while getting voice directions and warnings through the radio. It has worked flawlessly for the last couple of months of commutes, although the same cannot always be said of Waze on my phone. I ride a very upright D-P bike with only a small deflector, so wind noise can be significant, but the drivers in the helmet are clearly understandable through a light balaclava. I seem to have discovered that they have a battery saving auto-off if you leave range without turning it off. I haven't tried the radio for a phone call and I don't listen to music while I ride, so this is a bit of a one-dimensional review!

Overall great product
Saw all the other reviews and settled on the freecom 1. First sound quality is great, could have a slightly more bass but still very good even at high volume. Installation on my alliance gt was a little finicky but scala made there end super simple. Setup was a breeze, literally took 2 seconds couldn't be any easier. If your thinking sena give scala rider a serious consideration

Solo
My Chinese knock off unit finally kicked the bucket and I came across this. I don't normally ride with others so I was on the fence about buying a $300 bluetooth unit. In comes the Freecom 1. It's the perfect solution for someone in my position. Saved about $150 by getting this instead of a unit with all the bells and whistles. The speakers lose a bit of range at max volume but it does the job for music and calls just fine. The clamp for the helmet is very secure and the unit itself is unobtrusive when mounted. Not to mention fully water and dust proof! The big gripe I have is that they didn't include a wired mic, only the boom. While this isn't a big deal, a wired mic couldn't have cost much more to include with the kit. If you rarely ride with others, get this and save the cash!

Solid Value
I’m not a big pack rider so I only needed something to listen to music, answer a call and be easy to use/durable. Works very well for my purposes. Pairing app is a cakewalk, takes a few minutes to learn how to control your phone with the 4 buttons. Have gotten it dusty and wet and all works fine still. Understand if you need a microphone that is not a “boom style” this kit doesn’t come with a remote wired microphone, only the more robust boom option. I have a full face helmet and could make the boom fit and work, but it takes up real estate in my already snug fitting Shoei helmet. Also know the speakers didn’t fit my Shoei helmet perfectly, so look at the pictures closely.

Makes Commuting Better
I mostly ride to commute to work, and I decided to try a bluetooth unit to listen to podcasts and music. The weather's finally been warm enough to try the Freecom 1 a few times, and I'm impressed. The sound is great for podcasts, but only okay for music. I haven't tried to adjust EQ settings on my phone to see if that would help with music, but it might help to boost the low end a little. I can still hear traffic around me, which I like - I tried earbuds years ago, but I didn't like that I couldn't hear anything else.

I installed this on an HJC IS-Max 2, which was pretty easy once I figured out the best way to route wires. The speakers are a little large for the space in that helmet, but it works. I didn't install the microphone since I have no intention of talking on the phone or using voice commands. The unit still works fine without the microphone, and I think the volume still adjusts to ambient noise (at least, I've never had to adjust the volume while riding up to highway speeds).

I haven't tried the Cardo app because everything has worked fine without it.

Overall, this is exactly what I was looking for, and it's made commuting on a motorcycle even more enjoyable.

Trip Tested
Handle desert, sand, very hot weather, very cold weather. Rain and mud... I crossed from brazil to chile and this communicator worked really nice for gps. There are some issues if someone calls you when on gps... not sure if it is a phone issue or a cardo issue. Otherwise a very good unit.

Limited choice for a 2016 BMW R1200RT sound system
I hooked up my Freecom 1 yesterday, and after a bit of the usual farting around with pairing, I was eventually able to pair with both a Nav V GPS and the radio. I never usually make use of the voices on GPS units, so I nixed the voice prompts and just went with the radio. The speakers are not great, kind of tinny, and there's a bit of static when listening to SiriusXM, but better than listening from the speakers at freeway speeds. I hope the speakers can be replaced with better sounding units. If you decide on GPS and radio, the radio cuts out and the GPS gives directions, there is quite a long pause before the radio kicks in again. There's an app if you want to use your phone, but I ride to get away from phones. Pros: cheapest there is, lightweight works. Cons: Tinny speakers, only comes with a boom mic, needs to be re-paired occasionally to my RT (that is quick).

Very disappointed
After 15 minutes of install - pairs quickly with iPhone. However, the advertised apps that they recommend you download (Cardo SmartSet and /or FreeCom Smartset) do not pair with the Bluetooth unit. The phone and playing music work as advertised - however, the sound is filled with static even at low volume levels which getting very unpleasant at higher volume levels.
I will be returning this unit and be going to a different Bluetooth unit company.
