Bell Star Specter Helmet

The latest generation of a helmet that started a safety revolution in motorsports, the Bell Star Helmet has been reborn to serve the two wheeled masses with even greater comfort, performance and protection. Redesigned with a smaller profile for a more refined fit and tuned specifically for the upright riding position, the Bell Star combines the comfort and riding characteristics of a touring helmet with race-bred aerodynamics and performance.

FIT: The Bell Star has a narrow neck roll opening and snug cheekpads to occlude noise and to mitigate movement at high speeds. These padded elements will conform to your unique features by a break in margin up to 20% over time as the foam compresses.

STREETVIEW: The Star features two unique profile shapes for two distinctly different types of riding. The Raceview profile used on the Pro Star and Race Star uses an orientation specifically optimized for a tucked, more compact position. Conversely, the Streetview profile used for the Star is designed for a more upright, sport or touring position.

PANOVISION VIEWPORT:  No matter what or how you ride, one factor remains constant: the need for maximum visibility. Whether racing or going on a simple ride in the mountains, the ability to make safe headchecks and see obstacles clearly is critical. The Panovision viewport in the Star offers riders additional vertical and lateral visibility over the previous Star and more traditional viewports. This allows the rider to see better in a tight  or tucked position and make saferlane changes and head-checks.

EYEWEAR COMPATIBLE: Using prescription glasses or a preferred pair of shades is now possible with eyewear arm pockets woven right into the interior liner

X-STATIC LINER: A leader in antimicrobial fabric technology, X-Static material is clinically-proven to provide bacteria and odor protection throughout the life of the liner. X-Static fibers are permanently bonded with a layer of 99.9% pure metallic silver. This silver layer is the key to X-Static’s powerful antimicrobial properties, as it creates an ionic shield that permanently inhibits the growth of bacteria and fungi. Fabrics made with X-Static fibers are flexible, with the natural look and feel of traditional textiles, while offering all the benefits of pure silver.

TRI-MATRIX COMPOSITE SHELL: A proprietary mix of Aramid, carbon fiber, and fiberglass delivers all the strength of carbon fiber in a more budget-protecting package. Woven synthetic fibers have long been proven to be some of the most practical solutions where lightweight strength is required. Bell's Tri-Matrix shell utilizes the combined power and superior characteristics of these race-proven synthetics, offering unmatched strength and durability.

Features:

  • Tri-Matrix Composite Shell
  • X-Static Liner
  • Eyewear compatible
  • Streetview profile
  • 6 EPS and 5 shell sizes
  • Meets or exceeds Snell M2015 and DOT certifications

A quick owner breakdown
I bought this helmet just over a month ago and have put over 1000 miles on it. I was originally drawn to this helmet by its style, and fit. It fits more snug than other hemets and because of that does not wobble around on your head from buffeting or anything else at speed. It has excellent airflow, and the panovison does actually add to your field of vison. I was however disappointed when it came to installing my comms. From a quick look there are pockets where your ears are that seem like they could hold speakers, however that is not the case. Those pockets just fit your ears and not much else. This left me with the choice of do I sell my comms or buy a new helmet.

Airflow, airflow, airflow.
Great airflow. Perfect for warm southern California days.

Great face shield. It's so optically clear that I often try to reach in to adjust my glasses or scratch only to bonk the face shield. I also tend to reach up to put down the face shield only to realize it's already down.

Awesome face shield attach/removal mechanism. Makes removal for cleaning or swapping shields stupid easy. Push the button and it pops off. Positive click sound lets you know you've reattached it properly.

I wear glasses so it's nice to have the little gap above the cheek pads to accommodate them. They're a little higher than I'd like but still works.

Ear pockets aren't very big. My Sena speakers just fit and even without the foam they catch and fold over the top my ears. Every time I put on the helmet I need to squeeze my fingers in to unfurl my ears.

Runs small. I measured exactly in-between small and medium. I bought the medium and it feels snug. I can't imagine I'd be able to squeeze into the small.

Potential Eyeglass Fit Issues!!!
The guides they designed to accommodate eyeglass arms may cause Fitment issues. I have two pair of prescription glasses, one generic and the other Wiley X Gravity's....the guide channels will not allow the arms to rest down far enough and force both pairs to rest at a forward angle on my nose. I tried to slowly push the arms of my standard pair between temple and liner pad and one side or the other always wants to give way and slip up into the guide channel. The Gravity's tips are too spongy and I'm afraid I'm going to break them.

The guide channel seems to be placed rather high in relationship to the top of the visor opening and I can't believe they didn't think to make the channel taller to allow more range??? Either run a 3/4" tall channel or just stick with old design pads that give way?

I'm Seriously Bummed as this is otherwise an Excellent Helmet :(

Great looks it's a little snug
Awesome helmet thought it would breath a little better but it's not bad and don't get hot unless I'm sitting still. Great visibility out the sides and looks great. It's a little snug but doesn't move at all on the highway so that's good but might have to look into different cheek pads.

Not what I hoped for
This helmet almost fits funny, not sure how to explain it. The liner and pads move around when you put it on and dont sit right.
The wind noise is horrendous, it thunders in my ears at only 55. Do I have really high expectations ? Yes. but this is a really "nice" helmet according to the price.
You cant fit glasses in there, way to tight.
It looks nice ! vents and everything seem to function great, aerodynamics of the helmet are perfect.

Looks great but is extremely tight on cheeks.
Very solid and good looking helmet. Visor is incredebly clear and a cinch to take off and put on. I eccho the other comments that there is no way to wear glasses comfortablely or comms. The fitment is very tight to the point of pushing my cheeks into my teeth. I think this might be solved with a smaller cheeck pad but my head measures 22" so I thought this helment in small would fit perfectly.

Couldn't pass up such a great deal!
Fits well depending on the kind glasses you wear. This is my first helmet so I can't really compare it to anything but for the price this is a great deal. For some reason this style Star helmet was the cheapest. About $50 less than the black and white version I was originally going to buy but then I found this one.

Great helmet. I love the visor lift tab being in the center. I always seem to flip it with my right hand at stoplights. (left hand on the clutch)

What's the rear cutaway like? I currently ride the RS1 but notice on track days in the tuck, the back of the RS1 hits the areohump on the Atem jacket and I can't look as far through the corner as I want :( As a result, looking for a new lid.
A shopper on Apr 18, 2016
BEST ANSWER: It's fine. I did a track day with my Star last year, and I didn't have a problem looking through turns in a full tuck. Forward visibility was fine, but the Race Star is probably better in that regard. Probably depends more on the suit than the helmet, though.
Does this helmet come with the transition visor?
A shopper on Jun 26, 2016
BEST ANSWER: All helmets come with a clear visor as the default. The transitions visor would be something you would need to buy seperate. It's not ideal, but it is well worth the extra cost. Carrying a tinted visor for daytime use, and a clear visor for nighttime use does get to be a pain over time. Invest in the convenience so you can focus more on enjoying the ride
Do they make a transition lens for this?
James S on Jul 23, 2017
BEST ANSWER: No ...just clear and full tint
Are tinted shields available?
