Bell Star RSD Blast Helmet

The latest generation of a helmet that started a safety revolution in motorsports, the Bell Star Helmet has been reborn to serve the two wheeled masses with even greater comfort, performance and protection. Redesigned with a smaller profile for a more refined fit and tuned specifically for the upright riding position, the Bell Star combines the comfort and riding characteristics of a touring helmet with race-bred aerodynamics and performance.

FIT: The Bell Star has a narrow neck roll opening and snug cheekpads to occlude noise and to mitigate movement at high speeds. These padded elements can make the helmet feel small at first, but will conform to your unique features by a break in margin up to 20% over time as the foam compresses.

STREETVIEW: The Star features two unique profile shapes for two distinctly different types of riding. The Raceview profile used on the Pro Star and Race Star uses an orientation specifically optimized for a tucked, more compact position. Conversely, the Streetview profile used for the Star is designed for a more upright, sport or touring position.

PANOVISION VIEWPORT:  No matter what or how you ride, one factor remains constant: the need for maximum visibility. Whether racing or going on a simple ride in the mountains, the ability to make safe headchecks and see obstacles clearly is critical. The Panovision viewport in the Star offers riders additional vertical and lateral visibility over the previous Star and more traditional viewports. This allows the rider to see better in a tight  or tucked position and make saferlane changes and head-checks.

EYEWEAR COMPATIBLE: Using prescription glasses or a preferred pair of shades is now possible with eyewear arm pockets woven right into the interior liner

X-STATIC LINER: A leader in antimicrobial fabric technology, X-Static material is clinically-proven to provide bacteria and odor protection throughout the life of the liner. X-Static fibers are permanently bonded with a layer of 99.9% pure metallic silver. This silver layer is the key to X-Static’s powerful antimicrobial properties, as it creates an ionic shield that permanently inhibits the growth of bacteria and fungi. Fabrics made with X-Static fibers are flexible, with the natural look and feel of traditional textiles, while offering all the benefits of pure silver.

TRI-MATRIX COMPOSITE SHELL: A proprietary mix of Aramid, carbon fiber, and fiberglass delivers all the strength of carbon fiber in a more budget-protecting package. Woven synthetic fibers have long been proven to be some of the most practical solutions where lightweight strength is required. Bell's Tri-Matrix shell utilizes the combined power and superior characteristics of these race-proven synthetics, offering unmatched strength and durability.

Features:

  • Tri-Matrix Composite Shell
  • X-Static Liner
  • Eyewear compatible
  • Streetview profile
  • 6 EPS and 5 shell sizes
  • Meets or exceeds Snell M2015 and DOT certifications

Bell Steps Into the Elite Realm
Reviewing the new Star after approximately two weeks of near-daily use, replacing an RS-1 I'd worn for 3.5 years. I ordered the base Star in Medium, and found it to be an excellent fit; I am somewhere between an Intermediate and Long Oval shape and the Star fits my head perfectly, one of the few helmets I've ever tried that doesn't put pressure on my forehead. The weight is OK; the RS-1 was a particularly light helmet, and the Star feels approximately similar, maybe a few ounces heavier, but it's well-balanced.

While it doesn't have the whiz-bang jade liner of the Race and Pro Stars, the lining in the helmet is very comfortable and wicks sweat well. The cheek pads were tight when I first got the helmet, but broke in after 5-6 total hours of riding and are still very snug without being uncomfortable. Same for the top lining. The ventilation in this helmet is excellent, with the chin and brow vents flowing a ton of air, and the top vent flowing enough to provide actual cooling to the top of my head at speed.

Noise and aerodynamics are on the quiet side of average; the helmet is very quiet with my head in an upright position, but is somewhat loud when tilted downwards, i.e. in a tuck position. Windscreen turbulence has an effect, but it is surprisingly quiet in clean air. The spoiler on the back has a noticeable effect at speed, with a very centered feeling and noticeable pull towards center when cleaning my head. Visibility is excellent, the Panovision design actually does deliver better sideways visibility relative to Bell's previous models. The visor mechanism feels much more solid than previous Bell models, operates effortlessly, and seals much better than previous models, but does not have any detents between cracked and fully open, a flaw that has been more of an annoyance than I expected in the summer months. The visor release is very quick and easy, but requires a decent sideways push to ensure proper seating; I've had the visor pop out on me twice as a result of this, and this is the only area I felt warranted anything less than 5 stars.

Others on here have mentioned difficulty in installing Bluetooth communicators; I use a Sena 20S, and did encounter minor difficulties installing it; the neck roll fits so tightly into the outer shell that it is impossible to fit a communicator clamp between it and the shell; I used the included Sena sticky mount, which still does not have enough contact area to really be effective. I plan on trying a few different things and updating as I do so. Speaker placement is OK; the helmet does not have dedicated speaker cutouts in the EPS, but the pads do have an open area that makes it possible for speakers to be mounted over the wearer's ears; whether this works for you will depend on your head, but I have to mount my speakers quite far forward to be able to hear them.

Overall, I'm very happy with this purchase; I would put the base Star on the same level as a Shoei RF-1200 or Arai Defiant or RX-Q in terms of quality, and the fit as mentioned earlier is better than any helmet I've yet tried. Bell have put themselves squarely into the high-end realm of helmets with the new Star.

Great helmet for daily riding.
I purchased this helmet with daily riding in mind. It works fantastic! The vision is wide, and true. I do not notice fatigue from weight or design. I wish the helmet was more compatible with my SENA headset speakers, but the clearance for the ear pad snaps is just too small. Overall, a great purchase, worth the price, and definitely stylish!

This helmet is great. NOT EYEWEAR COMPATIBLE!
I really like this helmet. This helmet is really nice; the paint job and styling is great and unique. More importantly the helmet is sturdy, has good ventilation and is comfortable. Unfortunately the helmet is not light and nor is it heavy. It seems slightly heavier than I would like and would pay extra for it to be a little lighter. My biggest critique on the helmet is that Bell claims there is eyeglasses channels and that the helmet is eyewear compatible however the channels if you can call them that are merely a thin straight line gap between the cheep pad and the head pad. This would force the glasses to remain at my forehead rather than resting on my nose and that is only when I manage to force the glasses in. The glasses are nearly impossible to get in. I have to really force my rayban wayfarer slim version in for them to go in at all and have decided to not use my glasses in this helmet in fear that the pressure will break my glasses or cause damage to my temples. I imagine if you have glasses that have just the thin wire for arms that they would slide in easily but would still be restrict the glasses and arm from being too high. This would make have to put the helmet facing more toward the ground in order for the glasses to touch the bridge of my nose. Really unfortunate and sad that I cant wear my glasses when riding in this my only helmet

Great helmet, good looks and quiet. Only problems are vent came loose on back, mostly my fault, and no speaker pockets, but they did not want them so no marks off for that

Sena fitment
Yada yada yada it's a good helmet. I'm here mostly to chime in about the mounting of a Sena or other Bluetooth communicator. A lot of people speak about not being able to fit a comm unit in this helmet. I do understand some people have larger ears than others. Though I have pretty average size ears, this helmet accommodates a Sena pretty well. It's not going to be perfect but it is a lot more possible than most people talk about in most reviews. Only thing I had to actually modify was the wind skirt at the bottom of the helmet. I had to cut a two-inch piece out that doesn't affect performance, safety, or aesthetics of the helmet. It did take me over two hours to mount and get everything perfect for my liking, but I can use this helmet with the Sena for hours on end with no pain or discomfort.

Bell Star size XL
I've ridden one season with this helmet.
I also have an RS-1 that is several years old, both are XL. The star helmet fits a little more snug than the RS-1, more so than just break-in, but it feels like it has a little better protection.
Pros: Better comfort (once you get it on).
Slots that allow eyeglass bows to comfortably mate
with your ear.
Better air flow.
Cons: It's bigger. The size XL shares the same outer shell
with the size XXL. Now add the aero wings and
channels and mine wouldn't fit in the side pannier
of my 2012 Ducati MTS. I finally found that it fit if I
put it in upside down.
No transition shield.
Shield is either open full or closed.
It's loud, I think a bit louder than the RS-1.
Hope this helps.

Great helmet
This helmet is light, comfortable and great visibility. It has better airflow and is quieter than my previous Bell Star helmet. Just wish Bell would have included the carry bag that came with previous Star helmets. Overall, it's a sharp looking helmet that gets the job done!

Bell RSD Blast Helmet
I like most features of the helmet. It feels a little heavy, but probably a matter of 'not being used to this style helmet.'

Very Dissapointed
Since the new Bell Star was introduced I wanted one and seeing the pics of the RSD Blast it looked beautiful. Some Stars (including the Blast) are on discount so I was really looking to purchase one as a replacement for my Scheubreth C3. I had issues with the Bell 500, I'm supposed to fit in a Medium but I wasn't able to get my head into a M so I bought the large. With this in mind I was hesitant about ordering a Star until I could try one on. I was at a Rally and there were Bells available to try. I actually fit in either a M or L. Looking into details of the RSD Blast the helmet has a Huge width profile. It is also considerably heavier than my C3 and other higher end helmets. My wife has an RS-1 and it has a much better profile and less weight. I'm wondering if Bell had to add material to obtain the Snell rating which the old RS-1 doesn't have. I didn't get to see the higher end Racing Stars to see if paying more would get a lighter and slimmer helmet. I'm disappointed since I really liked the look of the RSD and the price is right for a Star, it's too heavy and looks BIG.

Just recieved
Just recieved my Bell Star RS Blast helmet. Bought on sale at great savings. I have been looking at this helmet for some time. Since I have not ridden with it yet my comments may be incomplete. Finish, graphics, lens, lineing are great. Overall size is large versus my Shuberth. The Bell weighs in at 3lbs 14 oz, the Shuberth at 3lbs 8 oz. I ordered a large which seemed very tight when I first put on but after I removed the cheekpads it felt more than large enough so I feel the cheekpads need to be broken in , otherwise the rest of helmet had no hard spots anywhere else. I'll resubmit my review after I have ridden with it but so far I think it is going to be a great all around helmet. I ride a Buell XB12R on the road.

Bell's website says that all of the helmets in the 2016 Star line are DOT and Snell M2015 rated but Bell also shows them as ECE 22.05. Are these helmets ECE 22.05?
A shopper on Mar 16, 2016
BEST ANSWER: According to the Bell website the New Star's are certified for all (3) ratings.
Will Sena SMH10R speakers fit?
A shopper on Aug 29, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Yes, they fit fine. The pockets aren't as nice as on the Shoei helmets, so you may need the velcro backs to help them stay in place, but I have the SMH10R set up in my helmet and it works great!
Would the bell star rsd be good for Adventure riding positioning (upright) or is it more for a street bike (tuck) riding position?
A shopper on Aug 6, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Yes, it is perfect for all riders. I ride a 2001 Indian Scout. One word of advice though. If you plan to have Bluetooth installed, go a size up to accommodate the speakers.
Is there a place where I can buy a non clear face shield for this?
Joshua A on Oct 3, 2017
BEST ANSWER: You can buy tinted shields right here on RevZilla. They are the Bell Panovision shields and they come in 8 different variations. Expect an upcharge for the iridium (mirrored) shields however.
Is the fit of the RSD Blast helmet similar to the Arai line?
A shopper on Dec 15, 2016
BEST ANSWER: I found the Bell helmets to fit tighter than Aria or Shoei. I wear a Medium. The Bell was tight around the temple area. The Arai Medium felt snug but comfortable all over. The Shoei felt a little snugger than the Arai . I purchased the Shoei RF-1200
Hope this helps
