What's this?

Bell MX-9 ADV Hi-Viz Helmet

Born from Bell's extensive and legendary experience, the Bell MX-9 Helmet blends the best of their dirt and street knowledge into a feature packed middleweight ADV helmet. Equally at home on the street as it is in the dirt, the MX-9 panders to those riders who are out there pushing boundaries and not stopping when the road ends and the trail begins.

The lightweight polycarbonate shell comes in three different sizes, mitigating bulk and providing a more comfortable fit. Bell's velocity-flow ventilation system keeps air flowing, forcing fresh air in and hot moist air out, while the removable and washable liner and cheek pads ensures you can keep sweat and bacteria build up at bay.

The MX-9 ADV helmet can also transform into a more streetable helmet by removing the peak visor. Included side pods replace the visor where it mounts to the helmet, giving you sleek top-gun styling. When you hit the dirt and need the added protection of a pair of goggles, simply flip up the shield and throw 'em on. The MX-9 is designed to work with any dirt goggle out there.

Truly a go-anywhere, do-anything helmet, the Bell MX-9 Adventure helmet fills a much needed gap in the market and is perfect for pros and beginners alike.

Features:

  • Lightweight polycarbonate shell
  • 3 shell sizes
    • SM: XS and SM Helmets
    • MD: MD and LG Helmets
    • LG: XL and 2XL Helmets

  • Moisture wicking, removable/washable air channeled comfort liner
  • EPS-lined chin bar
  • Adjustable mouth vent
  • Padded chin strap with D-ring closure and strap keeper

Best ADV helmet in this price range
While the Bell mx-9 adventure lacks some features such as closeable brow vents, or an internal sun shield it is a vastly better helmet than competitors in its price bracket such as the AFX 39 / 41, MSR Expedition, or Fly Trekker.

Fit and finish is very good, wind noise is louder than a pure street helmet but really not that bad when compared to other ADV helmets. It flows a ton of air, which really makes a big difference when you're working the bike off-road. I find the fitment to be very close to Shoei's, I wear a large in Shoei and the bell large fits great.

Lastly when riding off road I use this helmet in conjunction with 100% racecraft goggles, and they fit perfectly underneath (though you do have to tilt them slightly to get them through the eyeport), and the visor closes snugly with the goggles in place.

Also despite what Anthony says in the video the peak does have two points of adjustability, it's not much, but you can move it about an inch. In my picture it's in the more forward position.

MX9 great for the money
I've been riding for 40 years,
Road raced for much of that time as well. Although I exclusively wore Shoei, I would say that would set the bar very high in terms of helmets.

This is an incredible helmet for the money. I have not crashed so I cannot speak of protection in those terms, but the construction and fit seem up to those standards. The only complaint would be that I find it slightly loud. This may be due to the Duck bill visor, these arent present in Road Race helmets

Otherwise a tremendous deal, great fit, excellent visibility, and I didn't notice any visual distortion at the edges. Very light, pretty cool styling...Get one, you won't be dissapointed...

Great value
I am very pleased with the purchase . I really like having the visor to deflect the Sun coming through the trees. Additionally I strongly believe in the high visibility clothing. I've been wearing it for around five years and I absolutely notice a huge improvement in my visibility with other motorists.

Wide Viewing Angle
Wow! Coming from a street helmet (HJC IS-17), this helmet has such a wide viewing angle I can barely see the edges when riding. Noise is about the same, maybe slightly better than my previous helmet. No issues with the visor at highway speeds. Also, the pictures make this helmet look yellow, but I was happily surprised that it is the same fluorescent green hi vis as my other gear.

My head measurement is 60 cm.I get large.Fits perfectly.
Nice material and very good finishing. There is no chanel for glass. But sunglass can be fitted easly.Visor screw can be adjusted by hand but loose easy.so ? applied locktite.

Bell mx-9 good:

1-Not loud.Noise is normal level for this kind of helmet
Earplug mus be use on hihgway cruise.

2-Goggle can be fitted quite good.

3-Not heavy helmet.

4-Dot and ECE certified

5-Excellent price & quality balance.

Bell mx-9 bad:

1-Vents cant be closed. But not big issue.

2-Face sield can be positioned only three point.

Nice for the price
Put 3,000 miles on this helmet in 4 weeks this summer. Bought it due to styling and price. Wanted a Nexx XD but stock was depleted. Only feature i wanted but this helmet does not provide is a drop down sun visor. Fit and finish are very good. Easy to remove visor for road use. Haven't tried with goggles yet. Is noisy at road speed but ear plugs solve that. Rode in pouring rain a lot, non-closable vents did not soak me inside.
Will be getting the tinted shield for next year.

decent helmet at a decent price
This is a decent helmet at a good price. While it lacks the features of more expensive models, It felt like an upgrade over the old, dirt oriented helmet I had before. It was much better and more stable on the highway especially with the peak removed. The shield is good optically and it forms a good seal with the mouth bar, directing more air into the vent or around the helmet. I also like how I can remove the peak and the shield for cleaning with no tools.

Exactly what I was looking for
I'm a new rider and I wanted a good dual sport helmet in hi-vis color. This one checked all the boxes, so I placed my order. Previous reviews said the helmet tended to run small. My size is on the border of L & XL, so I went with XL based on the reviews. The fit was nearly perfect. If anything, the cheek pads are a bit tight, but they do not cause discomfort. It's a nice looking helmet, and the price point is great.

Hopeful, but disappointed
Let me start by saying that I REALLY wanted to like this helmet. However there are just too many reasons it won't work for me.

It is a good looking helmet (Hi-Viz model), but that is where the happiness ended for me. I'm 6'4", 240 lbs. and my head measured 24" around. I typically wear a 17 1/2 longish oval hat. So, I ordered an "XL" in this helmet, as per the size chart.
In reading other reviews, I was concerned with the top of the helmet being too small, but the top is fine. My problem is the cheek pads are crushing my face! The XL and 2XL are the same shell size, the difference is the XL comes with 40mm cheek pads and the 2XL comes with 35mm.
I have ordered the 30mm pads (the thinnest available) from Revzilla and will see if that helps. However, I don't think it will be enough because this is a very narrow shell.

It is not just the fit that I'm unhappy with. The "Peak" is useless due to the high angle. In fact, I can't even see the peak when I wearing this helmet, so it will not help keep sun, or anything else, out of my eyes. Since it is not adjustable, it seems to be purely for looks and to catch wind.

Next is the lack of control on the vents. Only the chin vent can be closed. The two jaw vents and the two brow vents (or chimneys) cannot be closed. This is great for warm weather, but I'm thinking I will freeze in the winter. Not to mention get wet in the rain.

Okay, This is a sub-$200 helmet and it certainly has the bare bones features of one. It's no secret that Bell took their MX-9 Motocross helmet and slapped a shield on it to pass as an "ADV" helmet. I knew that going into it, and hoped for the best.
If you are wanting to only wear it for short rides, in warm weather, it may be a great choice for you. However, I was hoping for a comfortable helmet with good features for adventure touring. Unfortunately this is not it.
I think I will return it and prepare to spend twice as much on one that I will be happy with for my type of riding.

I was looking for a second helmet to use for commuting and wanted something hi-viz and with a peak to block the low sun on the ride home during the winter months. Several helmets fit the bill, but the MX-9 Adventure had the best combination of positive reviews and price.

Hi-Viz, right price. Can use it for both street and dirt
Joe R on Jun 24, 2016
I bought this and the AFX FX-39 to see which I preferred. Ended up sticking with the Bell. The construction is so much more obviously superior for only a small increase in cost. The paint is also actually high viz, rather than yellow spray paint, and the vent and visor are both solid. The helmet is decently quiet - I don't need earplugs, although some riders might want them.

Does this helmet come with the tinted visor?
Robert G on Oct 1, 2017
BEST ANSWER: No, but it can be obtained separately and change the original
What visible stickers/inner tags showing helmet certifications does the hi viz yellow helmet have? Victoria/Australia need clear EC 22.05 or AS1698 tags and the Hi VIZ yellow isnt available in any shops here
Damien S on Jul 6, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Mine has an ECE 22.05 label on the outside rear.
Is a pinlock shield (clear) available for this helmet?
A shopper on Apr 8, 2015
BEST ANSWER: No, I asked that exact question to a Bell rep and she said that pinlock isn't an option on any of their helmets.

That said, I bought it anyway and haven't had any issues with fog. It builds up a little moisture on the visor, but no fogging. It's a very comfortable and well-made lid; miles above anything I've tried on in the sub-$200 range.
