What's this?

Bell MX-9 ADV Helmet - Solid

Born from Bell's extensive and legendary experience, the Bell MX-9 Helmet blends the best of their dirt and street knowledge into a feature packed middleweight ADV helmet. Equally at home on the street as it is in the dirt, the MX-9 panders to those riders who are out there pushing boundaries and not stopping when the road ends and the trail begins.

The lightweight polycarbonate shell comes in three different sizes, mitigating bulk and providing a more comfortable fit. Bell's velocity-flow ventilation system keeps air flowing, forcing fresh air in and hot moist air out, while the removable and washable liner and cheek pads ensures you can keep sweat and bacteria build up at bay.

The MX-9 ADV helmet can also transform into a more streetable helmet by removing the peak visor. Included side pods replace the visor where it mounts to the helmet, giving you sleek top-gun styling. When you hit the dirt and need the added protection of a pair of goggles, simply flip up the shield and throw 'em on. The MX-9 is designed to work with any dirt goggle out there.

Truly a go-anywhere, do-anything helmet, the Bell MX-9 Adventure helmet fills a much needed gap in the market and is perfect for pros and beginners alike.

Got put to the test on day one!
Upon receiving this helmet the weather was not quite suitable for riding yet. Within a few days the sun came out, the earth heated up and I was ready to try out the new MX-9 Adventure. On its maiden voyage a storm moved in, and a light rain started. Long story short the knobbie tires on my DRZ, mixed with minutes old rain, and a patch of gravel in a decreasing radius turn brought me down pretty hard. I tried desperately to hold my head up and save the bell from taking any damage, but could not.

The Bell took an impact to the left rear quadrant of the helmet.

I was terribly frustrated with the situation, but at the same time very grateful that the helmet was on, and saved me from any and all head damage in the crash. No concussion, no rattling on impact, no loosening of anything within the helmet itself. It simply absorbed the blow and diffused the energy away from my skull as any decent helmet should.

Unfortunately, I think my new helmet's only purpose in life was to take that one ride with me, as I am terribly skeptical about putting an already crashed helmet back on the road.. But like I said, it did the job it was designed to do, and for that I am quite grateful.

Surprisingly quiet and light - I love it!
I like Bell helmets and have been happy with my Bell Star but for off-road riding, needed something that would flow more air, be quiet on the freeway and be light enough that I could forget it was there. To my surprise, the MX-9 does all that. I used a digital scale and it came out just a hair lighter than my Star. I mounted my Sena 5 and speakers easily. Out on the road, it's actually quieter than the Star. The MX-9 exceeded all my expectations and will be my warm weather helmet with no regrets.

Good points:
* It's both DOT and ECE certified.
* Quiet - VERY quiet
* No buffeting (even at 65+ with the visor on). I do have a tall windscreen though.
* Light - 1.5kg with the Sena unit and speakers
* HUGE view port (but all adventure helmets have that)
* Good value
* Sizing is the same as my Star. I wear an XL and it fit perfectly.

Bad points:
* The shield is simple to remove by unscrewing small screws on each side but as soon as you do that, the small, black ratchet cams fall out and try to escape. I'll order a set of extras before any big trips.
* The D-Ring strap works fine but why not use the easy magnet retainer like other Bell helmets? The MX-9 has a snap retainer.
* There are only two usable ratchet shield positions. Go up one notch and you have a 1/2" opening at the bottom of the visor. Go up another notch and the curved, bottom edge of the shield is directly in your line of site. Go up third notch and the shield is almost all the way open and out of your line of site. Go up the last notch and it's way up there, see description at position 3.

Best for the Money
I've owned two other dirt-oriented helmets before this one: an EVS T5 dirt helmet, & a Speed & Strength SS2500 dual sport helmet. The reason I mention the EVS is because they now have the exact same shell in dual sport form (T5 Venture), so it seems like a valid helmet for comparison.

The MX9 is most similar in comfort to the T5, but not quite as plush, & therefore slightly less comfortable. That said, the plushness of the T5 comes from more surface area of padding, which makes it an exceptionally hot helmet, even in dirt form. The SS2500 has a rougher material for the padding, but it seems to wick sweat better, which makes it nice for long summer rides. Where the Bell wins is in weight. It's very close to both other helmets on paper, but the weight seems to be distributed better for a lower center of gravity.

The Bell has WAY better airflow than the T5 or SS2500, especially over the SS2500. This makes it great for sunny warm weather, & not so great for rainy cold weather. Another pitfall of the airflow is it gives the helmet more lift at highway speeds, which is annoying. That said, the MX9 is the best of the bunch for overall highway performance, as the rounder shape of the shell minimizes side-to-side buffeting significantly over the other two. The improvement there far outweighs the lift issue in terms of highway performance.

The vision is also better because of a smaller chinbar, which helps a lot for singletrack when you need as much downward visibility as possible.

The only complaints I have are, as mentioned in the video, the non-closable upper faceshield vent, & the lack of earpockets for a headset. What sets it out above the competition to me are the highway aerodynamics, the easily removable visor (to turn it into a jet pilot style street helmet), the comfort, & the light weight. I do wish that all helmets, dual sport or not, would adopt the 'speed strap' that the SS2500 & some other helmets have started using, as I do miss this about my SS2500, but other than that & what I mentioned above, I would't change a thing about this helmet.

This helmet saved my head
I'm a new rider and after about 7 months of riding I went down on my DRZ. I panic braked too hard going about 10-15 mph during a turn and the rear lost traction. The next thing I know I was going over the handle bars, I landed on the left side of my head and body (mostly left shoulder). The helmet did it's job. My head is 100% okay, and I was able to luckily walk away from the experience with nothing more than a slightly banged up shoulder. I was also wearing eyeglasses inside my helmet when the accident happened and was surprised that they were still intact and didn't hurt my face in some way. I wasn't moving at a very fast speed, but from what I remember I still managed to slam my head on the pavement with a decent amount of force.

Perfect Dual-Sport Helmet
I bought this helmet for the looks, visor, and faceshield/goggle compatibility. I'm completely satisfied.

I upgraded the shield to a tinted version, and adjusted the visor to its lowest setting. Totally changed the look of the helmet.

After removing the visor to see how it looked, I was very happy, but I appreciate the sun-blocking feature that the visor provides. If I were on my street bike and wanted more of a fighter-pilot style of a look to my helmet, I'd wear this one and remove the visor.

Overall, very happy with this helmet and would recommend it to anyone in the market for a DS lid.

overall a great buy
All the pros of a bell helmet for a reasonable price. Ok I love this helmet, the styling is fantastic and the visibility is great. My only real complaint(s) are those raised in the revzilla review video: I wish the shield could crack open and that there were more adjustment points on the peak. With that said, I was surprised how little I feel it on head-checks. I wanted a reasonably priced, good looking, dual sport helmet with DOT/ECE cert and a flip down shield without crazy graphics (note I got the white one) so this helmet was exactly what I was looking for.

Awesome Helmet
High quality, affordable helmet. Offers great protection and is very comfortable. Can be a bit loud at high speeds but otherwise there are no other issues. The only upgrade I made was purchasing the dark smoke shield, which I highly recommend.

Perfect Supermoto helmet
Purchased this helmet for my wife to learn to ride a Supermoto that I recently purchased for her. It is light, gives her a wide range of view and even though the bike is a relatively loud thumper she says it does not echo in helmet at all. Would easily buy it again.

Great product
Bell is a well known brand that's been around for many years. This helmet is definitely a bargain... I would say it's a bit heavy and noisy but sure a good deal for the price. Not the best if you get to go mostly on the highway but very good if riding around the city or at slower speeds.

Excellent value
Moves a lot of air & has excellent visibility. Feels light and did not seem to be excessively noisy. Had no problem with visor causing any lift @ 65 mph. Outstanding helmet for the price.
