What's this?

Bell MX-9 ADV Barricade Helmet

Born from Bell's extensive and legendary experience, the Bell MX-9 Helmet blends the best of their dirt and street knowledge into a feature packed middleweight ADV helmet. Equally at home on the street as it is in the dirt, the MX-9 panders to those riders who are out there pushing boundaries and not stopping when the road ends and the trail begins.

The lightweight polycarbonate shell comes in three different sizes, mitigating bulk and providing a more comfortable fit. Bell's velocity-flow ventilation system keeps air flowing, forcing fresh air in and hot moist air out, while the removable and washable liner and cheek pads ensures you can keep sweat and bacteria build up at bay.

The MX-9 ADV helmet can also transform into a more streetable helmet by removing the peak visor. Included side pods replace the visor where it mounts to the helmet, giving you sleek top-gun styling. When you hit the dirt and need the added protection of a pair of goggles, simply flip up the shield and throw 'em on. The MX-9 is designed to work with any dirt goggle out there.

Truly a go-anywhere, do-anything helmet, the Bell MX-9 Adventure helmet fills a much needed gap in the market and is perfect for pros and beginners alike.

Very surprised!
Have a few hundred miles in the new Bell helmet and I have to say I am somewhat surprised considering the price. I replaced an Arai XD-4 with it. I really wasn't expecting much from it considering it being 1/3rd the price of a new Arai. Its a keeper.
I wear a XXL in Arai, and after reading the sizing chart for this , it said I need a XL. I can not stand a helmet that is too snug or tight. It fit great. Just ever so slightly smaller than my Arai. I did order some 5mm smaller cheek pads to fine tune it.
Seems well made. Nice finish and craftsmanship. Has large ear openings. I wear fitted ear buds alot on long trips and this worked great. Would be good for a Scala intercom headset too.
The shield had a rather odd lip on it. Instead of curving out at the edge so you can lift the visor, it curves into meet the helmet wear it seals. This actually allows you to lift the visor from any edge and not have to feel for a lift tab in one spot. Visor has a great field of view and is optically correct. When in the up position it is high enough to wear goggles, something I could not comfortably do in my Arai.
Ventilation seems very good. Hard to tell as its been windy here, but it seems like it takes in a lot of air from under the helmet. Maybe be too much in the cold.

Cons-??? Well, I wish the sun visor was adjustable up and down a little, but it seems to be in a happy medium spot. I am happy enough with it to be trusting this lid for a trip to Prudhoe Bay and back in a few months.
I would, and probably will, buy this helmet again. Don't let the $199 price tag scare you.
The reason I only gave it 4 stars is I believe every product can improve, not because of something I disliked on it.

Great helmet for Adv or DS riding
I picked this helmet up to replace my AFX FX-41. The AFX due to the internal visor was a bit heavier (RevZilla lists the 41 at Weight: 4.02 lbs) the MX-9 at 3.58 lbs. The weight difference was noticeable to me when I switched helmets back-to-back in my house.

I put on a new set of Roko Sports Quick Straps for my 100% goggles and mounted up my SENA SMH-10 earbud and boom mic intercom clamp with no real issues.

The helmet was then tested in Tellico Plains at March Moto Madness. I utilize the S-Plugs with my SENA so helmet noise isn't really a factor. I also mounted my camera to the top flat part of the visor (Sony HDR-AS100V) - I was a bit worried the visor would creak over bumps with the weight of the camera, but it did not. My brother-in-law also has the MX-9 and he mounted a GoPro 3 up there in the same spot. I used the GoPro mount on my camera.

The helmet works GREAT! I had no issues with the visor down over the goggles. I also loved the wide view port and ability to ride with goggles in the slow stuff for tremendous airflow.

I also have a Bell Qualifier DLX and they both fit me the exact same. The fit is better for me than the AFX-41 on my noggin.

I do love the ability to run in "street" mode without the visor. I probably won't do that much since I have the Qualifier for the street.

I wish the visor tilt could be changed - but it was in a good spot to help block the sun when needed. I did not notice any undue wind noise from the peak, but we were not riding on the highway.

I also utilized this helmet with the Pro RS4 neck brace and it worked very well with it. I didn't notice the brace at all with the helmet until I tried to look "up" and the back of the helmet hit the brace (as it should). Side to side I was worried about the SENA mount interfering, but for me it did not.

Great Helmet For Little Money
I vacation in the Rocky Mountains and ride 6-8 hour a day. The ability to see the scenery I am riding in is very important to me. This helmet is perfect for the slower trails as well as moderate speed riding. The use of a shield instead of goggles improves visibility and comfort on long rides.
I highly recommend this helmet!

Very good helmet for the price
I love the fit of all of the Bell helmets. Bought this one for short rides, (5 hours or less), and for the off road trips on my BMW R1200GS. The visor does have 2 adjustments, despite Revzillas review which states only 1, and at speed, (85-95mph), it doesn't catch air and yank your head. Great wide field of view and very good flow thru venting on super hot days. I do wonder if it would let water inside the vents on a rainy day since they don't have shutoffs on top. I had an Arai helmet and the fit for my head was terrible. Squished cheeks and pressure points on the forehead with bad headaches after 30 minutes. Had to sell it. Like the Bell much better!! Overall an excellent helmet for dual sport riding at a reasonable price and it's made in America.

Good helmet at a GREAT price!
I was very surprised that a helmet priced this low could be so good. The only issues I have come across are airflow within the helmet and the aerodynamics at speed. The helmet is larger than most when it comes to outer diameter which increases buffeting at speed. The airflow through the vents is lacking but not the worst I have ever experienced. All in all I cant really argue those points because of the price! I highly recommend this helmet to the entry level rider or anyone looking for a good helmet at a great price!

Another quality Bell product
Love this helmet for my DR650SE. Very quiet!!! Previously had AFX but was very loud, especially at highway speeds. MX-9 is quiet as a mouse at 70mph. One warning is the sizing. With the helmet sizing chart I should've ordered a Large (23inch). I ended up ordering an XL and it was too tight. Had to order XXL cheek pads and then it fit fine. Bill is not adjustable, but didn't bother me at highway speeds when looking side to side.

Purchased this helmet for my supermoto now that winter has arrived and my mx helmet is too cold to wear. Extremely pleased, may even get another for the motocross track as ithe season gets colder. The cushions are very plush and the fit was perfect for me. With the mouth vents closed its handled the cold flawlessly(40 minute ride in 25 degree weather), the upper vents do let in air but it was not enough to be troublesome. What I like most about this helmet though is the field of view, it was like I hadn't had a helmet on. I've never had a helmet offer anywhere near the line of sight this helmet offers, I feel so much safer on the street compared to a traditional helmet because I can see everything going on around me without blind spots normally created by the shell of a helmet. It is a little heavier than I'm used too, but that is nitpicking, this was not a problem wearing the helmet. It's also nice to just simply take 30 seconds to remove the duckbill when I ride my fathers sportbike, and the helmet looks great with it off as well. At the current price this is a phenomenal deal

A Good Contender
This helmet is Very comfortable to wear, and has excellent ventilation through the mouth vent , but could also do with a Chin protector to minimise air flow up under jaw. Being an Adventure helmet , it would have been nice to have an incorporated Sun visor that could be activated with a slide button.Air vents could also do with a shut off system, because when it rains, you will get wet! Other than that , it is a very good helmet, that is very comfortable to wear with minimal wind noise in the Ear department, certainly a Contender before going up into the high end helmet range

Really good, narrow cheek pads
I really like the new Bell MX9. I have a Scorpion street helmet and a Fox dirtbike helmet with no faceshield. I really wanted a Dual Purpose Helmet with good airflow, a large field of view, and a good faceshield. I got all of this with the new Bell. The helmet fit me well at XL size. However, as many pointed out, the cheekpads are really thick. I ended up ordering the 30mm pads (40mm is std for the XL size) and now it is perfect.

The helmet is remarkably quiet for me as a helmet with this much airflow.

Only remaining issue, even after rotating the visor forward, there is quite a bit more sideways drag on my head in the airstream at highway speeds than my Fox. It is manageable, but I wish I could tilt the visor down even a bit further. They probably limited this travel due to potential interference with the visor when open.

All in all I am very satisfied and would highly recommend this helmet.

BEST ANSWER: DArk grey with hi viz yellow with black accents on visor and from jaw/ear up and around the back.
Hi guys!

I just bought these helmet and i didnt quite like the mesh area on the cheekpads. Do any of you know what other full fabric cheekpads that can be used on this set of helmet?
Sherman K on Feb 13, 2017
Small medium large. Is the helmet physically diffrent sizes? Or the same size just padding is diffrent?
Ron C on Sep 3, 2015
BEST ANSWER: As you'll notice in the description, there are actually 3 shell sizes to cover 9 different helmet sizes. So yes, they use the same size shell for 3 helmet sizes and accomplish this by adjusting the padding size.
in the product details it doesnt say if it comes with a smoke or clear shield. in the picture it shows it with a dark smoke shield. if i order one will it come with a smoke shield?
Carlo Z on May 19, 2015
BEST ANSWER: Carlo Z, this Helmet comes with the clear shield only ! And from what i can tell, Bell hasn't released any of the smoked ones to fit this lid just yet. Hope this helps because i am waiting on Revzilla to email me when the smoked ones are available.
