Looks, lower noise levels than 1/2 helmet I currently use and I like the new lower shape of the 500.

I wanted an open face helmet, so I chose Bell for their reputation and legacy.
Joseph K on Jul 9, 2017
Full face is too hot for me in the summer and reduces vision to the sides. I've always liked the simplicity and retro look of an open face helmet. The lack of moving parts means less things to break.
Jon C on Jul 6, 2017
Purchased my first Bell in 1967. Great helmet then, hope it's just as good or better now.

Not as good as the LS2 helmet I also bought from Revzilla. The LS2 Helmet is a better fit for an oval head.

Wanted an inexpensive 3/4 helmet for my Harley.
Brian S on May 4, 2017
Classic retro look. Originally struck out on the full face version, smaller size. Decided to go open face and one size up. But overall, like the timelessness of the Bell Custom 500.

Mike P on Apr 1, 2017
Good style and value. I used the snap shield to protect my eyes but after two years of only occasional riding the snaps have really loosened up and are no longer effective. I can't figure out how to tighten them without tearing up the liner either.

Diego M on Feb 17, 2017
Just about all of my riding friends said I should get a closed face helmet or a modular for my ride, but I want to keep the vintage look alive. Cruiser bikes all the way for me. I've got the style down pat and will probably buy a half-helmet later for the warmer weather days.
Andrew S on Feb 12, 2017
Bought this helmet mostly for passenger riders. Primary is Bell Bullet. I have a Triumph Street Twin and if you have a retro bike this helmet is a "no-brainer purchase". Can't beat the price.
Jonathan L on Jan 22, 2017
DOT compliant, trusted Bell name, but most importantly, six shell sizes, so I won't have "mushroom head".

Awesome 3/4 helmet. Fits perfect looks great (for a DOT approved helmet). Very comfortable.
Phil C on Sep 22, 2016
Bell is synonymous with quality. First ever motorcycle helmet was a Bell and it's still a part of the collection. The Custom 500 simply didn't fit my round head well.

My head size is a 22 in inches that's a small do I go to the next size bigger which would be a medium ?
A shopper on Mar 9, 2016
BEST ANSWER: I am a female with what I believe is a fairly oval shaped head that measures 22 inches. I first bought the small and it was tight. Then bought the medium, and it is perfect. It pulls down lower on and around my head, accepts sunglasses easier, and is more comfortable out of the box.
Is this helmet ECE certified?
Michael J on Jul 10, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Yes
can this be used with a visor and a shield together?
A shopper on Aug 11, 2015
BEST ANSWER: No it can not. It is set up for one or the other but not in conjunction.
can comunication devices be installed in these helmets?if so which ones would work?
Darrell U on May 19, 2015
BEST ANSWER: Super simple. I clamped a Sena 20S mount to it and used the boom mike. The black covering over the boom is wearing off from rubbing against the chin strap. That could be my installation location and fat face. Install into the helmet was less than half hour.
Is this helmet CEC certified?
Michael J on Jul 10, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Yes
Does the bell custom fit anything like the bell rouge? We can't find bell custom 500's locally to try on but the bell rouge fit me perfect, only thing is we want 3/4 not 1/2 helmets
A C on Aug 6, 2016
BEST ANSWER: So I can't say about the bell rouge but I have both the bell 500 and a bell vortex and both are large, the vortex is a full face, it's a little snug on the cheeks but besides that they feel about the same on the brain, hopefully that helps
How much does the liner adjust after break in? I'm measuring a 56CM, but trying on the small made my ears get pinched. I'm wondering how much give the liner had after some use.
A shopper on Oct 1, 2015
BEST ANSWER: It gives a little after a few weeks. My medium felt quite tight front-to-back when I first bought it, but is now comfortable.
How accurate is size chart?
A shopper on Mar 7, 2017
BEST ANSWER: I found the size to be very accurate. And more importantly, as described in the video, it is shaped for my roundish American head. I wear it with a very thin liner/balaclava and as long as I keep the seams flat, I can ride for hours without hot spots or pressure points..
Are Biltwell bubble shields compatible with this helmet? Thanks :)
Shannon K on Mar 30, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Yes, I have a biltwell bubble and it works great.
Is it snell or dot approved?
A shopper on Mar 13, 2017
BEST ANSWER: It is DOT approved

What's old is new again. This is the new Custom 500 new for 2014.

They've changed a few things but they're big things. You've seen us do a
few previous versions of this video. The Custom 500's accessories moving
into 2014, the big change is fitment. This helmet is now is a low profile
design which is really different compared to any other DOT open face
helmets on the market.

Now you see to my left, this is the pre-2014 design I have right here. It's
DOT and very similar in its shape. In the center I have the new version.
You can see it's very simple. There's not a lot of external changes other
than they've added the fist snap for a flat shield. So some of the
accessories might be different. But you're still going to get a multitude
of colors: metalics, graphics, custom artists. They still use it as a
canvas because this is the helmet that started it all.

But what you are getting from Bell is now a helmet that sits dramatically
lower on your head. And they've accomplished this by updating the actual
outer shell with a new style of composite fiberglass.

They've also updated the EPS and they're now using five different EPS and
shell shapes for six different sizes of helmet. So extra small and small
are the only ones that are sharing a shell. So what that's allowed it to do
is, it literally sits inches lower on the head. You can see it from the
front. You can see it from the side.

It's going to have the exact same fitment as the latest and greatest shape
that we've seen on the RS1, on the New Star. It's that new shell shape from
Bell. Their new internal fitment shape so it's going to fit lower, more
snug, and much more contoured to the head. Where the original Custom Bell
500 from last year is going to be a little bit more round.

Now keep in mind when you're thinking about fitment too, if you're still
concerned we do share for free. And I'd love to hear your gut reaction.
Click here and subscribe to us at Revzilla TV.

But again the big story is the fit. If we dive back into the helmet though.
If you're new to the Custom Bell 500, remember that it is the canvas. Bell
started in 1954 with Roy Richter. This is the original helmet that
everybody's is riding right now. It's singlehandedly the most popular open
faced helmet we've seen in the last three to four years.

Fiberglass composite shells as I told you. They're really lightweight. The
new version now shaves an ounce off. So 2.5 pounds. Five snaps on this
outside design. Bubble shields, flat shields. You have different visor
configurations and options. Depending on the color of the helmet or the
graphic, the trim's going to change. So on this helmet, it's rubberized. On
this older version, it's chrome but there are chrome versions of the new
Custom 500 for 2014. And you still see the nonremoveable quilted diamond
interior.

Now if you're still in this market and you want to go even further retro,
check out the new Bell Bullitt helmet. It's a big step up in cost. This bad
boy is just over that $100 mark. The new Bell Bullitt is going to be
dramatically more expensive, but that's a piece of art. Where this is
really a blank canvas that Bell's just done a ton of creative stuff with.

Remember it is going to be DOT in its design. You even when I turn them
backwards, this guy feels a little bit more long and narrow where this
guy's a little squattier. And again that rounded shape allows it to sit
lower but still give you the same amount if not upgraded protection with
this EPS outer shell combo.

One last thing to call out is that the new 2XL which is the top of the food
chain from a size standpoint on the 2014. Moving on Custom 500 is now 64
centimeter where previously it was 63 and some folks ran into some issues.
So again, the size range has been refined as well.

Remember we love this helmet: bang for the buck factor, style factor. From
Bell again... You can't ignore the vintage inspiration that goes into the
helmet that started it all. Really when they used to call these crash
helmets back in the motorcycle era, the classic old days in the 1950s and
1960s.
