What's this?

Arai Corsair X Rea Helmet

In true Arai fashion, the Corsair-X Helmet has taken helmet technology and rider protection one step further by engineering a helmet that not only guards against direct impacts, but is specifically designed to minimize the effect of "glancing off" impacts as well. Arai has created a stronger shell and smoother shape that is more likely to redirect impact energy than absorb it (therefore decreasing the amount of force transferred to the body). To increase this potential to glance off impact energy, the VAS (Variable Axis System) side pod, pivot cover is smaller in size and its position on the shell is lower.

The Arai Corsair X Motorcycle Helmet features a chin curtain that helps to block air intrusion from the turbulent air underneath the helmet, as well as increases negative pressure to enhance the exhaust ventilation performance. The interior lining includes Arai's signature 5mm peel away ear pocket padding and ear pocket recess to accommodate communicator speakers.

VAS Shield System:

Normally the shield mounting position must remain relatively high, because a lower shield pivot will not allow the shield to open or close. The VAS (Variable Axis System) has a variable axis (moving pivot point). This allows shield opening and closing even with the 24mm lower shield mount position, compared to the Corsair V.

VAS Shield Latch System:

VAS shield latch system captures and holds the shield closed more securely to help prevent unexpected opening. In addition to a de-mist position, the larger latch design allows for an intuitive and seamless operation of the shield.

PB SNC2 Shell:

The Corsair X helmet shell is constructed from Super Fiber and other special synthetic fibers developed for F-1 helmet visor panels, assembled and bonded by Arai experts. A specially-developed resin creates stronger bonds between shell materials with less weight.

Diffuser Type 12:

The Corsair X Type 12 air diffusers are longer than the Corsair V and are straightened for improved aerodynamics, working together with the AirWing to improve stability, and creating a 19% gain in efficiency. The air intake vents are extremely adjustable and have three positions (closed, half open and fully open) and create a tight seal to decrease wind noise and water intrusion.

Eco Pure Liner:

The fully removable interior liner system is made from Eco Pure material, which helps maintain neutral acidity levels close to human skin and antibacterial consumption, as well as a softer liner material and adjustable temple padding to allow for a customized fit.

VAS V MV Shield:

The VAS MAX Vision shield is standard to provide better visibility in all seasons and for all types of riding and comes standard with a clear anti-fog Pinlock insert.

Additional Features:

  • VAS (Variable Axis System) shield and side pods are exclusive to the Arai Corsair X Helmet
  • Dual function lever releases both the side pod and the face shield for quick and simple face shield removal
  • VAS shield latch system captures and holds the face shield closed and provides a de-mist position to slightly crack the shield open
  • VAS MAX Vision face shield provides excellent visibility in all seasons thanks to the included Pinlock insert
  • Neckroll is removable and has additional exhaust channels to remove interior heat
  • Cheek pads have the Emergency Release Tab feature
  • IC Duct5 forehead vent provides 11% more airflow than the Corsair V, features 3 positions and is overall large and easy to operate with gloves
  • PB SNC2 Shell has superb tensile strength due to a variety of carefully-positioned materials and light weight resin
  • Arai's R75 shell shape creates a rounder, smoother helmet to enhance energy and impact dispersion
  • Includes clear Pinlock insert
  • Snell 2015 and DOT approved

kept up with Arai standards!
What can I say, Arai is one of the top helmet brands and you just can't expect any less. I can only compare this to my old Astral X and Profile. To tell you honestly, I can't really feel a big difference on the street besides the view being significantly larger. Noise wise, I sort of expected it to be a lot quieter but not a big difference from the other styles mentioned above.

Is it the best bang for your buck? functionality wise, for street use, I would be satisfied with the corsair V especially because the X is few hundred dollars more. I feel like you're just paying bigger bucks for next "new thing", the brand, and the special graphics. However, I can't complain, it does feel like I'm wearing nike vs payless or a Rolls Royce vs a Nissan Versa, around my noggin. I'm loving the Rea graphics.

Worth the extra cost??? You decide.
This is the first helmet that I have bought that cost more than $200. I wanted to buy a Snell certified helmet with what I thought was going to be added features that justify the price. On the positive side this helmet fits great with even snug-ness all around, the quality of the finish is first rate and it is quieter than a modest cost helmet. Unfortunately, the visor release mechanism is small and difficult to work with gloves, same with the various vents and spoiler. Definitely make all your adjustments before you put on your gloves. Of the moveable parts on the helmet, the visor release is most disappointing. Lifting the visor is a two step process of pushing upward on a lever that releases the visor and then lifting the visor with the far too small molded in tab. Closing and securing the visor requires pushing it inward at the release lever to get it to re-engage. Despite the assumed added security of the release lever, the visor can be forced open (and thats exactly what you will do if you don't read the instructions first). I count something like eight different vents none of which are easy to operate with gloves on.

I use this as a track day helmet and if that's what you're looking for, the inconvenience of the vents is overcome by the fact that you might only wear it for 30 minute stints before you stop and can re-adjust if necessary. I readily admit, my noggin "feels" safer in this shell.

I actually spent time researching this purchase instead of just buying the cheapest helmet that fit. I focused only on the premium helmets. While I don't regret this purchase and I can SEE where the extra money spent goes, I am not totally convinced it's worth it. My perfect helmet would look and feel like this one but ditch some of the superfluous features and come at a mid price point.

Fantastic Top-Shelf Helmet with Great Features
I was replacing an older Arai RX-7 and tried a number of helmets on, but once you're used to a very light helmet, it's hard to go to anything heavier. The Corsair X is very light, and after getting the 35mm cheek inserts, the helmet was instantly as comfortable as my RX-7 was. I love the styling, but of course that's subjective.

Overall: Top shelf fit-n-finish, great ventilation, great features, light weight, and looks awesome.

A couple of notes: it took me a little while to get used to the visor's double latch system, which does a better job holding the visor in place than my RX-7, but did take some getting used to. Essentially, once your visor is down, you have to trigger the latch with your thumb to crack it, then move your thumb to the visor itself, to open it. It's kind of like going from a single click to two clicks in a software application, so that takes a little getting used to.

Other note: When removing the chin curtain, the cheek pads were now too narrow to grip my face (I like a tight feel), and I had to buy the 35mm cheek pads. It makes me wonder if I'll have to put the thinner pads back in when I use the curtain in the winter.

Nice upgrade, getting used to the visibility
It was time to replace my Corsair V, so getting the Corsair X was a no-brainer. The overall fit of the X is the same, though I do notice it's a tighter squeeze to get the helmet over my ears. All of my minor complaints with the V have been fixed; the visor lock and vents are easier to operate while the helmet is on, and with the pinlock visor I haven't noticed any fogging at all. I am still getting used to the visibility--you can see the brow vents and the border around the pinlock insert in your peripheral vision, which can be a little disorienting especially when looking back for lane changes. It's not a deal-breaker, but I'd say that aspect isn't as good as the Corsair V.
