Alpinestars Tech Air Street Airbag Vest

The Tech Air Street Airbag System is a state-of-the-art, tether-free airbag protection system designed to be used with Alpinestars Tech Air Street prepared riding gear. The onboard computer system uses Alpinestars' proprietary algorithms to process the information gathered by the vest’s accelerometers and gyroscope. Should the system sense a crash, it will deploy a protective airbag, providing comprehensive protection to the rider's full back, shoulders, kidney area and chest. The Tech Air is ready to go right out of the box—no need to install sensors on the bike or go through a complicated pairing process. Simply install the vest in a compatible jacket and go ride.

The vest's ever-vigilant ACU is able to detect that things are going awry within 30-60 milliseconds, even when hit from behind at a stop light. It then triggers the dual argon inflator charges, fully inflating the system's airbag in 25 milliseconds. After deployment, the Tech-Air compatible jacket can still be worn for the rest of the ride, taking advantage of the built in CE level 2 back protector. Then the Tech Air Street Airbag Vest system can be easily removed from the jacket and sent to Alpinestars for repair.

In the Tech Air Street Vest, you are always protected. Whether you are carving canyons, putting in long miles on the interstates on a Goldwing, railing down a fire road on a GS or commuting to work on your trusty scooter, the Tech Air has your back.

Electronics System:

  • PC compatible software (No current Mac compatibilty) allows for updating of firmware and triggering algorithms
  • Fully enclosed ACU (Airbag Control Unit) is seal-protected within the vest's CE level 2 back protector
  • One gyroscope and one accelerometer housed inside ACU
  • One additional accelerometer on each shoulder
  • Lithium ion battery with approximately 25 hours of use when fully charged
  • One hour of charge time yields four hours of ride time

Airbag System:

  • Comprehensive protection of back, shoulders, kidney area, chest and upper abdomen
  • Argon inflator charges are CE certified to ISO 14451 standard
  • Internal airbag tethers used to control final deployed shape create less bulk than a chambered design and allow for quicker inflation
  • Nylon-6 airbag material is lightweight and breathable
  • Airbag inflates in 25 milliseconds and remains fully inflated for 5 seconds

  • Installs easily in Tech Air Street Vest compatible gear with VELCRO® brand fastener and YKK zippers
  • Once the jacket is zipped, the system checks to ensure you are riding and arms itself within 60 seconds
  • When the system detects a crash, the airbag will be fully deployed within .025 seconds

Special Notes:

The Tech Air System requires registration with Alpinestars. Upon purchase, RevZilla will email you your portal login credentials. If you do not receive an email by the time your order is delivered, please reach out to us for assistance.

Due to the technical nature of the Tech Air System, special care and maintenance is required. Once the airbag has been deployed, the vest must be sent to Alpinestars for maintenance, repacking and cleaning. Please note that if the suit has been serviced or either of the airbags have been deployed, the vest is no longer returnable. Please read the User Manual in detail, and let RevZilla know if you have any additional questions.

Note: The Tech Air Street Vest is ONLY COMPATIBLE with Tech Air Street prepared riding gear. It is not compatible with Tech Air Race gear.

Untested Review
I have not tested this in a crash yet, so I can't comment on that part. What I can say is it is a bit heavy and bulky but considering that it is still quite comfortable. It will block airflow in the torso area where the airbags are.

I did have the rubber micro USB cover break off.

Once I had a big long ride and I had forgotten to charge the vest so I took a portable battery used for charging cell phones & ipads and plugged that into the vest while riding. I was still able to arm the vest even while it was charging which is nice so this seems to mean that you could even have the vest charged off your bike if you were doing some epic trip away from power.

Early on I seemed to have a few issues with it arming (would show a red light) but that hasn't happened much now. I think it's a bit sensitive to making sure you have it velcroed and that you walk around a bit while it turns on. Sounds like more of a pain than it is, I got used it it and figured out some good timing in the routine of putting my gear on that seems to work well.

Unfortunately tested
I figured I should write a review since I've had this vest since it came out and have had the chance to prove if it works or not.

I want to point out that this thing is heavy, the back protector does its jobs but it definitely looks bulkier than just having a standard back protector. Using this vest with the Valparaiso jacket sure adds some extra weight. I wouldn't say it's uncomfortable, but take that into account if you're looking to ride light.

For what it is, there are cheaper options that may fit your needs better. And since this particular vest offers no neck protection, I wouldn't say it's worth the money. However, being cordless is a good feature and supposedly offers better trigger response than other more mechanical options.

I'd say a big con is that this vest won't work without the compatible jackets, so you're pretty much limited to the current two jackets available. Both jackets are okay so it's not a big deal, unless you're like me and want to keep adding jackets and styles to your closet. If you're one of those, look somewhere else. However the vest integration with the jackets is really smart and convenient.

Does it work? I high sided a couple months ago and landed right on my side/shoulder. Unfortunately I still broke my collarbone (and wrist), and in the chaos of it all there's no way to notice if it actually triggered before I hit the ground. But once I was on the ground I can confirm the vest inflated at some point. I don't have footage of how I crashed but I feel the vest prevented me from breaking a rib or two, but can't say for sure. Breaking my collarbone was inevitable, I think.

My biggest issue so far is that there's a $300 dollar service fee (plus shipping). I had to pay close to $400 for shipping + insurance of package, so take that in mind. They suggest you service it every year or so if heavily used. So if you trip and trigger the vest accidentally, you're out of $300+ dollars, so be prepared to spend extra for the extra protection. I also couldn't figure out how to start the servicing process in the website and had to call them to get things started.

Overall, I do feel more protected than just having regular armor. I do believe my crash could've been worse without the vest. It's not cheap, it's bulky, but that's the price to pay for top end technology. I'm in too deep to stop using it, I'd suggest you research all other vests and purchase the one that fits your needs.
