Crash tested
This is my 2nd review on this booth (i have the non-vented ones), my first review was mostly on fit and comfort while riding. Unfortunately I low-sided in these boots at the track going about 50 mph. i hit the gravel, flipped and spun a few times and went sliding face down. I was able to confidently stand up moments after the crash, and walked away with absolutely NO PROBLEMS with my legs, shins, ankles, feet, toes. And though i was sore in other places my legs and feet did not suffer any injury or soreness after the crash. Also after wiping them off, they look almost new again haha. highly recommended for protection. hopes this helps.

MAJOR quality control problem with ankle protection - broke instantly on both boots
***PIC OF PROBLEM ATTACHED***
Bought these and used them only about 2 weeks. Before I really even had a chance to use them (not a scratch on the toe slider or anywhere else - nothing but the sole has touched the ground of either boot), I put them on to ride one morning and noticed a washer was peaking out from the plastic ankle brace and the screw that binds it to the body of the boot was completely disconnected.

Thing is, you *can't* reattach this screw without removing the liner of the boot...which of course is permanently sewn in. So sure enough I had to pay $12 out of pocket to mail the left boot back to AlpineStars for a warranty repair.

Well guess what: a couple days later I go to pick up the right boot to put it back in the closet while I await warranty return of my left one, and *clink* a little washer falls on the floor! What the actual !@$%? I'm already out 8 days of riding due to waiting on return of the left boot, which I haven't even gotten back yet, and the right one has the exact same problem!?

I'd have let one boot slide, but having the same problem on both boots is an inexcusable QA issue that I cannot let go un-reviewed. While this boot is otherwise very comfortable and seems like it'd hold up in a crash (except for the ankle!), this major design flaw and the fact that this apparently common issue can't be fixed by the consumer means I have to suggest you keep shopping.

Great boot.. Except it came apart after ONE ride
Have had several pairs of other A* boots. These are typical good fit, nice construction, and I appreciate the new details relative to the SMX5.

That said,
The ankle protector screw came out after ONE ride. Yes, it was maybe 4 hours total.

I'm in contact with A* on warranty work, and I will try to update with my experiences, but they clearly have a QC issue with this boot.

VERY DISAPPOINTED :(
At first i loved them, they were comfortable and look like nice quality boots.
The second time, i had them on almost all day, but by the end of the day the right ankle protection fail, coming loose at the bottom, the screw that holds the piece in place came out.

I'm really dissapointed with the whole buying experience with this brand... Never buying alpinestars products again

Surprisingly comfortable and 'airy'
I live in California and only ride casually so warm weather performance was one key thing. I wanted a white boot to compliment my A* 2-piece race suit but didn't want to spend a fortune on it and so I was really happy to find the SMX 6 vented boots. As usual, Revzilla delivered quickly and the boots fit like I've been wearing them for years. I've had a couple Sidi and other boots in the past but none were this comfortable, even after wearing them for months. I didn't have any of the problems mentioned below but did make sure that the small allen screws are tightened so I don't lose them (will keep on checking on them regularly). It also surprised me how much airflow my feet get during riding. Due to this, I would not recommend this boot below 55-60F temperatures as it does get pretty cold in there. Having said that, it will be amazing on sunny 85-90F days... Also, if you're buying a suit with this boot, the A* Motegi goes really well with it in terms of design and fitment.

Love these boots
After trying a pair or two of riding shoes (that did not fit) I purchased these SMX6's. The shoes would have been fine for a modest amount of foot protection and to keep that tendon of your shifter foot big toe from getting really sore, but they just left me feeling exposed in the ankle and shin. I think having the foot protection really made the ankle and shin exposure stand out.

As soon as I slid my foot into the footbed of the first boot, I knew I was going to be happy. These boots are great. Very comfortable as others have mentioned, and lots of protection. They seem to have some type of foam padding or boot liner that is very comfortable. They feel almost like ski boots, but not nearly as bulky or awkward. I got the vented version and on the highway in the 60 degree temp area I could feel the cool air blowing on my toes, especially if I pointed my toes down exposing the top of the shoe to the slipstream. Even if you are not riding I have to believe that the perforations will at least allow some steam to leave the shoe! The sole if very stiff, but you can still walk in these. I wouldn't want to walk in them all day, or around the mall if your girlfriend makes you go there, but certainly from the pit-side parking lot to the stands and down to the concession stand for a few hotdogs at your local race track.

I've attached a few pics of mine with a pair of jeans on. I am able to snug the top of the boot up on my shin/calf and get a pair of Levi's 505 jeans down over them. In the future I plan to wear a pair of some type of riding pants with knee/shin pads, so I am guessing they won't fit outside the boot at that time. But with a more sport specific pair of pants, I imagine they will look good on the outside of the pants anyway.

I don't know what to tell you about boot size and shape. I did try a few different brands at my bike shop simply trying to find a pair to buy. The Alpinestars fit me the best of the other brands I tried. The Dainese's were very loose on my heel so as a brand, I had to rule them out. I tired at least one other brand but I can't remember which one. The Alpinestars just seemed to feel "normal" to me. I wear a size 12 dress/work shoe, and probably a 12.5 sneaker. I was surprised that in these boots, a size 46 was the right choice. I think that translates to about an 11.5 American if I remember correctly. They are not too tight or too loose. Just right! I'm very happy with my choice.

Great starter boots!
I picked up these boots to get off riding in high top sneakers. I had initially tried riding with my friends Super Tech R boots, but I didnt like them. I couldnt feel my pegs and shifters I felt disconnected from my bike. These SMX 6 on the other hand feel more like regular shoes/boots than a specific riding boots. I can feel where my pegs and shifters are and I feel a better connection with my bike. The venting is great as well once you get up to speed. I have wide feet and the foot bed is nice and accommodating. The zipper velcro system is nice, making getting in and out of the boots a breeze as well as fine tuning them to your fit.

Excellent Riding Boot
I was looking for a intermediate riding boot, something that could have adequate protection, do the occasional track day, but not be horrible to walk around in off the bike, on the weekends. This boot does all that and more. The level of protection at this price point is impressive. The linkage and hard parts are top quality. The boot is light, and while the foot controls might feel slightly muted with them compared to say, a riding shoe, it's not by much. These boots are actually more comfortable to walk around in than some of my riding shoes. Great value, protection and comfort, if you're looking for a good all around boot with protection and comfort this is an excellent option.

First Set of Riding Boots AWSOME.
I wear a 12-1/2 and got size 48 EURO and they fit perfect.
They are extremely light. They are lighter than most of my shoes and fit well.
This is my first set of Street Boots. Ive had Motocross boots before, but these are alot different in a good way.
Also, easy to walk around in and don't feel awkward.

Shockingly Comfortable
This is my first set of race boots. I have had motorcycle boots for the street, but nothing meant for the track. I like the boots all the way around, but the most shocking thing is just how comfortable they are. They are more comfortable that the street boots were when I first bought them. There is basically no break in period as far as comfort.
They ride a lot different than a street boot due to the ridged nature of the safety features and shifting was not as second nature as normal. After an hour or so I adapted and everything was fine after that. Luckily, I wore them on a 125 ride on the street before I wore them on the track so I didn't waste and hour on the track trying to figure out my new gear.
I really like these boots and I can't wait to wear them on the track again in a few weeks.
