I should of bought these sooner!
I decided to go with the smx3 non-vented and haven't regretted my decision at all. I live in California and so far have used my boots in summer, fall, and now transitioning to winter. Overall the boot runs slightly large (which is a good thing). It is with great ease that I say, I wish i bought these boots sooner. If you are tempted to buy them and are just taking a couple days to think it over, I can already tell you that you should have bought them yesterday, these boots are just good. The style as far as looks is a bit boring in my opinion, but as far as functionality they are not lacking whatsoever. They are definitely comfortable, and allow for a good range of movement.
If you are a student riding to school, I wouldn't recommend walking around in them all day as i did once, just get a collapsable duffle bag, bring an extra pair of shoes and then carry your boots around in the duffle. I hope this helps anyone that is on the fence.

At a little over 5000 miles on these boots...

A good around-town boot
This is a very comfortable boot for use around town. I've walked around in them for hours at a time and they don't feel massively unwieldy and clunky like a lot of motorcycle boots do when you aren't riding.

There is obviously a bit of a trade-off between comfort and protection, but for around-town riding I find them to be adequate. For fast riding, though I would recommend upgrading to a more protective boot. This is a boot for someone who wants to have fun under the speed limit and then wants to walk around without changing shoes.

The boots feel well built and are holding up well construction-wise. The zippers are smooth and the velcro straps are ultra-solid. I haven't had cause to test out the toe sliders yet, but they look pretty cool in my opinion.

Revzilla's sizing advice is pretty spot-on. I normally wear a size 10-10.5 shoe and a size 44 boot fits me perfectly once I get the ratchets and straps adjusted.

If you're looking for a good around-town boot with more protection than a riding shoe, but more comfort than than a full-length boot, I'd definitely recommend the SMX 3s.

Great boot for the Non-Track crowd
These badboys are a great option for those who are safety conscious, weekend warriors and commuters. I was able to wear these to school, go to a kids party, extended riding, walking and standing all in the same day for over twelve hours without major fatigue. The boots are comfortable especially with riding socks, but traditional socks will work just fine. These boots go over a standard pair of jeans with no problem too. The non-perf black version which I purchased make it under the radar without the Cinderella look and almost appear like any average shoe. The ratchet fastening system doesn't seem to do much since the boot is already sized & form-fitted to the foot, but you can snug down the top if you like and its simple to use. About the only thing that needs breaking in is maybe the top section of the boot where your lower leg/shin make contact and you're good to go.

I am a true size 9.5 US and the 43 EUR fit me just fine with a slight amount of room for the big toe. I tried my son's foot who is a size 9.0 US and checked his big toe clearance and the 43 EUR still works fine with just a bit more room. The most solid part on the boot is the heel cockpit and the lower back half of the sole. The toebox (phalanges# and topside #metatarsals) are NOT reinforced or bulletproof so don't expect a crushproof ability like steel-toed shoes. The tradeoff is the comfort factor and flexing which make the shoe tolerable off-the-bike. So if the crush factor and/or lateral support are things you worry about, I'd recommend you step up in the Alpinestar's boot food chain. Gear shifting feels great and inner sole is nice. Boots grip great to the pegs and asphalt. If you have mesh gloves though, keep them away from the Velcro area where you secure the side flaps.

Overall, I would buy again if I needed to for general safety. Like I said for better safety, to with maybe the SMX-Plus. For everything else, consider these in your option line-up.

Very good purchase!
These boots are very comfortable on and off the bike, with a good feel at the pegs & shifter and very planted at stops. The soles seem like they're non-slip and have good flex, yet have a solid feel for support. The uppers have good flex as well, again, with a supportive yet comfortable structure. The protection and fit of this boot is very good, having exactly what you need where you need it without being restrictive or confining. I'm trying not to gush here, but these are the most comfortable boots that I've worn. I've been riding since '79 and wear boots all day as a construction worker, so I've been through some boots. There is nothing about this boot that I don't like. The style of this boot is very good as well. Mine are black and the white a-star, combined with the shape and look of the heel area, along with the strap and design of the top of the foot, all make this a very stylish boot. I wear size 15 D, though I can seldom fit in a 14 depending on the manufacturer, so I avoid styles that make my foot look longer than it already is, another reason I like these boots. I ordered the largest size, the 50 EUR or 14 US, and hoped for the best. They fit perfectly, both in length and width!!! I am very glad that I bought these boots!

Great upgrade from the SMX2
Switched to these after riding with the SMX2 for a couple of year. They feel almost the same, maybe a little lighter.
Super comfortable, ride & wear them to work everyday. After a while you forget they're on.

i tried on the SMX2 before and these are much more flexible which I like. Plus it doesn't feel like my foot and ankle are any less protected. It does get warm and stifling on hot days when walking around off the bike.

These things are AMAZING
I bought my Alpinestars SMX-3 boots a couple of weeks ago and I must say that I could not be happier. The comfort, the style, the protection.... If I knew these boots existed when I first started riding motorcycles I would of bought them the second they came out on the market! My only concern is that I have a wider foot so the boots fit kind of snug around my toes, but besides that, these are flawless. I wear a size 11 in US Nike shoes so I bought the EU size 44 boots and they are perfect. Stop wasting time and buy these bad boys, you wont be disappointed!!!

great boots
I recomend these boots to any street rider that wants protection and comfort. These alpinestar boots are well made and are extremely comfortable. i really enjoy the short lenght that allows for ease of shifting. The shift pad also lends for excellent feel of the shifter lever. The sizing was a bit confusing, but use the size chart on revzilla and you should be able to find the size thats right for you.

Solid mid height boot.
I've had these for a few months now. This is my first pair of motorcycle boots, so I don't have much to compare them too.

Comfort: 5/5
These things are more comfortable than my regular reebok running shoes. I met some friends at a park last week and rode by bike there. I was extremely comfortable walking around in these for a few hours.

Style: 4/5
Nothing too special. Just black leather. I got the solid black ones. Throw some jeans over them and you wouldn't really know it's a motorcycle boot. The toe sliders are the only give away, but they are low profile and easy to miss.

Protection: 4/5
These have a solid heel cup. The outside protection for your ankle is decent. I was expecting a little more, but I'm sure it would hold up in a crash. Not a full size race boot, so there is no shin protection. That's why I gave it a 4.

Overall:
I'm very happy with my purchase. These are very comfortable, and offer good protection. I would buy them again, and would recommend to a friend. Much better than riding in work boots or tennis shoes!

Returning this for the TCX X-Move
I am returning this in favor of the TCX X-Move.

I purchased both, looking for maximum protection as a mid-height boot that would fit under my skinny jeans (cuff 15.5 cm), under which I cannot currently wear any of my full height boots.

As Anthony describes the SMX-3, this is a boot not a shoe, extending well above the malleoli and completely covering the Achilles' tendons.

This is an excellent boot, but the TCX is superior in terms of protection. It rises just slightly higher than the SMX3. The TCX is 20% more rigid in the toe box and mid foot, and a full 40% stiffer in the ankle. Most importantly, the TCX provides hard (rigid) protection over both the lateral AND medial malleoli (outside and inside angle bones). Unfortunately the SMX3 has only soft support over the medial malleolus (the inside angle bone that would be crushed by a bike in the event of a low side).

Also, the Alpinestar hasn't quite perfected the ratchet system. The teeth slip and will not engage the ratchet for the last 25% to 30% of the length of the adjustable tongue. Also, the ratchet system strap lies a bit too low down on the foot, such that it irritates that prominent bone on the top of the foot towards the inside of the foot (the medial cuneiform, I think). Ideally, that strap should go just a bit higher where the ankle flexes.

In terms of fit, the lacing system of the TCX is more adjustable. The only real adjustment in the SMX3 is the ratcheted strap. Again, this only adjusts tightness at the level of the upper foot just past the ankle. Although there is a velcro strip over the inside part of the boot, this is really just to access and cover the zipper mechanism; it really provides no or little means of adjustment of fit. As a result, the upper part of the boot is too loose for my liking, though I am sure the ratcheted strap would keep the boot on in the event of a fall.

The SMX3 is also $30 more expensive than the TCX X-Move.

A shame because I am a big fan of Alpinestars (already owning 3 pairs of their excellent boots). But this one just doesn't cut it.

Needed a boot to wear to work and school. I don't have a locker to put clothes and boots in any more. Also it looks like it has a better protection level than the SMX2s. I don't really need toe sliders to get to work or school, but hey this boot sounds comfortable enough to make it thru the day. Now if only there were some way to get them resoled.

I chose the SMX3 for protection, style, versatility, and comfort based on Anthony's video presentation and rider's reviews. I've been wearing mid-height boots when I hike, at work, and when I ride, each boot specific to the task of course, so my choice was fairly simple, but not easy as I bounced between the Sierra Gore-Tex, Fastback, SP-1, and even the SMX5. I ride aggressive within reason, not really seeking a performance award, with no track days, so I think I chose well. Thanks everyone.

How tall are these boots?
Brett H on Oct 1, 2015
BEST ANSWER: On a size 44 they end about 2 inches above the top of my ankle bone. It's worth noting that I usually wear a 10.5 but in these a 44 fit me just right.
Can you tuck in race pants/suit into these? Are they high and wide enough? Thanks!
Aleksei on Jan 7, 2015
BEST ANSWER: I don't have any race pants but I have jeans, but yeah I can stuff my jeans inside the boot.
Sizing is a little off. I wanted size 41 thinking its going to be 8.5US. It fits with dress socks but I think its going to be a tad tight on sports socks. Do they break in comfortably and is it supposed to be tight like snowboarding/ski boots?
Allen R on Feb 19, 2015
BEST ANSWER: Allen,

I wear a size 8 and the 42s fit perfect.
They will break in a little. But if your an
8.5 I think the 43 would be the right choice.
I like these so much I also ordered the
Touring Gor TeX as well.
Would these boots be good in cooler weather, say down to 50 degrees? Is this model vented?
A shopper on Nov 29, 2016
BEST ANSWER: hi,

The boot is not vented.

I was already out last week when the temp was around 43, legs and hands was cold but foot and everything else was OK.

Hope that help answer your question.
Do these boots squeak after a while when walking around in them ?
A shopper on Feb 10, 2015
BEST ANSWER: Yes they do squeak when walking in them. The trick I do is just to loosen up the synches once you get to your destination to prevent the noise from occurring, then resynch when your going to ride again.
Will a normal pair of slim or straight leg jeans fit over these nicely?
Brent C on Jan 23, 2016
BEST ANSWER: My Wrangler and Levis straight leg jeans fit nicely over these boots. No tugging to fit. Anything less may need some pulling to make fit.
Confused about the sizing, I wear a 10.5 shoe (US) and reviews seem to conflict between 44 and 45 ?

BEST ANSWER: I wear a 10.5 as well, i ordered the size 45 and they fit perfectly. I think for me the 44 would be too tight. Hope this helps
Are these narrow in the toe box at all? Looking at these boots but I have fairly wide feet.

BEST ANSWER: My feet are medium wide and have no crowding in the toe box. I have a size 42 and wear a size 8 in shoes - but feel my feet are actually 8-1/4 (half way between 8 and 8-1/2).
After zipping them up you can adjust the Velcro to stretch to close tighter around the ankle for cool weather or leave them slightly loose.

As a plus, you can unzip them all the way down, stick the zipper pull to the Velcro, then close them up with Velcro for when you are walking around town.

I usually wear a thicker sock when wearing these.
Would these shoes get ruined if I wore them in rain?

BEST ANSWER: They're leather and plastic. I wouldn't think so unless it was heavy enough rain to get inside through the top. They should be fine.
Hi this will be still confortable during hot weather like 85f ? Between smx 3 and tcx-x move what you suggest? Thanks

BEST ANSWER: I bought this in an attempt to not have to walk around in "boots" all day at school. If I had to do it all over again I'd just buy a regular pair of "vented" summer boots.
